I had horrible customer experience at this restaurant. I called in and made a simple take out order. I arrived 2 minutes later and I asked if we could sit while we were waiting and then eat the food in the restaurant instead, they said yes. We waited abd 15 minutes after we ordered the food did it finally arrive. The item I got was barely Luke warm. I told my server who informed another server who came over and told me it was basically my fault that the food was Luke warm as they made the food super quic. the server begrudgingly had the cooks remake the food after taking it back the first time and saying they were to busy so we were shit out of luck. Then after bringing us the food the server told us to never call in food again and just come into the restaurant and order food only. Extremely disappointed with this situation and restaurant. We just moved to Nanaimo from the Lower Mainland a few months ago. We love pho and had our few favorite places in Coquitlam. Tried this place a few days ago for lunch. Very good service. But the pho is nondescript. Blah. Tasteless broth. Tough, chewy beef, even though I ordered rare flank. And compared to what we're used to, expensive: a large bowl of soup for $14.50 reminded us of what we used to see as a medium size bowl for $9.99. We'll be trying out other pho places in our new city, not in a hurry to return here. read more

Came to check it out because it was highly rated and the food itself didn't disappoint, though I was a bit nervous because there were no other Asians eating there. We got the pho dac biet and bun bo hue - both tasty, but missing a few of the traditional ingredients (like tripe, tendon for the pho and blood cubes for the bun bo hue). After reading all the rave reviews, we decided to stop by here for lunch on our way over to Ucluelet. This place was packed! I've never really had to wait for a table for Pho! Anyway, as per norm, I ordered my Bun Bo Hue. The description said there would be "deep fried prawns" and that made me think twice about ordering. I was scared my BBH would come with something resembling a prawn tempura but, thankfully, that wasn't the case. But my theory is that they were referring to the tiny little bits of shrimp that were sprinkled on top. It wasn't bad but the broth definitely had a more sweeter taste compared to the other BBH's I've had. My bf had the rare beef pho with tripe and found very little tripe. This restaurant wins hands down for wor wonton soup...an addictive perfect broth (tai basil infused) with so-tasty wontons, big & sweet prawns , crunchy broccoli , crisp bean sprouts, green onions sprinkled over top. The Prawn Rolls and Sprig Rolls were superb (#1 & #3). #48, Seafood Chow Mien, was disappointingly bland. Adding a spicy curry would have made this dish awsesome. Service was a tad slow, but nonetheless terrific...the place was jammed. The waitress made sure we had boostet seats for the youngsters, and showed their appreciation for family diners. In my never ending search for the best Pho I can slurp down my gob, ventured to Huong Lan as it was highly recommended by a Vietnamese family in another Nanaimo Pho joint. Sweet Mother of God this is the best Pho I think I have had in BC, Why oh Why noodle gods did you make this place across 22 Kms of water. Still I would suffer any BC Ferries death march to eat here again and often. Here are the delicious bullet points or maybe I should call them Beef Ball points. * Broth- Rich and flavourful, little MSG and piping hot, It tastes like a good broth which is cooked for a long time should. * Noodles- Full and not over cooked, not too skinny not to fat, I shall declare them the Kate Winslet of Pho Noodles! *Rare Beef- Pure Cow Porn!!! Beautiful meat enough fat to beef ratio so to keep with it's Food Porn theme I shall call it Ron Jeremy minus the fur. *Tendons- Perfect, not too cut up and well cooked. *Tripe----- Nice portions of stomachy goodness (seriously folks do not be afraid of Tripe. *Beef Balls- Mmmm Smokey Balls of mystery meat This resto is clean and not stuck in the 80's like most Pho joints and the service is very very goo. I heard about this restaurant through the grapevine. The best asian food I ate in Nanaimo so far. Of course it was not as good as the ones I got in San Jose, but I should not compare this restaurant with restaurants where the asian majority in the area is Vietnamese. As an appetizer we had fried wonton. My lovely hubby had pho, and I had rice plate with spring roll, lemon grass chicken, and grill pork (#54 if I remembered correctly). They are all good. Their portion is generous. Our bill come to CAD $29.30. One complain though, they charged 50 cents for the extra (probably 2 table spoon of) fish sauce. I was so tempted to take the 50 cents from the tips that we were going to give them. Good thing my husband keep me grounded. read more

Have enjoyed each of my visits to this restaurant, which is generally busy even at off-peak eating times. The spring rolls are good, but the prawn salad rolls have an accompanying satay sauce which is purely addictive - easily the best satay I have ever had. The Pho is excellent, and one day I may stray from it to sample other dishes. Judging by comments around me, most dishes are appreciated. Definitely a destination restaurant. read more

Great spring rolls Pho is good & huge portions I'm not so sure about consistency though I've been here a few times & ordered the same thing (pho) but it will often be missing some of the meats or today's was missing shrimp. On our way back from Tofino we were very much in the mood for some Asian food and based on the reviews decided to stop here. The Pho is quite good and along with the summer roll was the tastiest of the dishes we tried. The serving size is more than ample...and if you haven't eaten for a week you can order a large which comes in a truly enormous bowl. The beef chow mein was OK. We knew it would be something of a risk but one of our party really, really wasn't in the mood for soup. However, the biggest disappointment was the well promoted Banh Mi which lacked any of the bright flavors, pungent veggies, or rich umami meat normally associated with the sandwich. I've only been here for lunch, but it has been consistently delicious everytime. Salad rolls are great, and you get 2 big ones for $5.95, nice to share. The wonton soup and hot and sour soup are delicious. Excellent serving sizes, too. The prawn chow mein was very fresh and flavorful with many fresh vegetables. It is centrally located, and usually very busy at lunch, as it is a popular choice due to its good quality and reasonable price. As expected, it's not fancy, unless you consider strip-mall locations as high-end, but I'm not there for the decor. Give me the hot and sour soup. I want to give this place a 3.5. I've had the vegetarian hot and sour soup made with water here a few years ago and that seemed to be one of the only vegan options; it was good but not something i'd come back for. However, they recently updated their vegetarian menu and most of the menu CAN be made vegan. My parents (non vegan) love this place and so I decided to join them for a meal here to try the vegan options. The servers were all so kind but they don't have their own set of tables so we got asked if we were ready to order 3 times by 3 different people in 5 minutes, which was pretty annoying since we weren't ready any of those times. I ordered the vegetarian salad rolls to start and I was quite disappointed. I make salad rolls at home quite often with a lot of vegetables but the ones I was served at Huong Lan was just lettuce, vermicelli and plain tofu. The peanut sauce was good but for $7.95 for two salad rolls you'd think they'd put a bit more effort into making them. For my meal I ordered the 32-V and requested it to be made vegan. It was lemongrass tofu and grilled veggie skewers over vermicelli. It came with fish sauce, I didn't put it on my dish but knew right away that was a mistake. The meal was very good the tofu could've been marinated a bit better but the vegetables were so delicious with the noodles! I devoured my entire bowl and was stuffed and satisfied leaving the restaurant. Despite being satisfied I do think it's a pretty pricey meal. Essentially $17 for noodles and vegetables with a few chunks of tofu. But it appeared the entire menu was about the same price range. I'd probably come back again to try the other vegan options. In conclusion: the vegetarian salad rolls are a rip off! but the main dishes are plentiful and delicious. read more
