Came here yesterday for a nice birthday Bbq party. Very pretty. Good weather not too hot. Large screened pavilion. Fairly priced.

This is probably one of the most beautiful parks in the area. It's easy to access, clean , well maintained, safe. I've been here more times than I can count. Being a photographer, I'm always looking for a nice place to bring my clients that they feel safe, restrooms are available & the scenery is beautiful almost any time you go there. I give a 5 Star review because of the well maintained park, restrooms, safety , scenery. I've attached several photos of some of my photo shoots I have taken at this beautiful park.

Coming here was like finding $200 in the pocket of a pair of pants I hadn't worn in a year! It was so much more than I was expecting that I felt like a child visiting an amusement park for the first time. THE EXPERIENCE I plan just about everything I do, especially when it comes to day trips. Now, don't get me wrong! I enjoy being completely spontaneous too. But today I was on a mission to seek out a collection of covered bridges that I've been meaning to visit for over a year. So I jumped online, mapped out my coordinates for maximum gas efficiency and set off on my adventure. When I arrived @ Hurricane Shoals Park, the very first thing I noticed was the Heritage Village. This is a collection of historic buildings from all around the county grouped in a gorgeous open field that had been freshly cut for an annual event they'd just hosted over the weekend (more on that later). This magnificent collection included the following: * Freeman Log Cabin (1840) * Blacksmith Shed (late 1800's) * Corn Crib / Tool Shed (late 1800's) * Smokehouse/Wagon Shelter (early 1900's) * Privy (1948 style outhouse) * Miles Wilson Matthews Chapel (1892) NOTE: You can also rent the chapel for weddings. * Wood Caretaker's House (early 1800's) * Harrisburg Courthouse (late 1800's) * Water Well * Elijah Veal Log Cabin (1830's) TIP: Excellent backdrop for family photos * James Wood Cabin and Palmer Corn Crib (late 1700's or early 1800's) * Johnson Log Barn (late 1800's) * Cross Roads School (1870's) FACTOID: One of three African-American school in the Newtown Militia District (Nicholson). It closed in 1948 and its earliest known teacher was Mr. Cicero Buffington from 1879-1882. THE COVERED BRIDGE Are you ready for a wonderful sight? This bridge is perfect in almost every way. Town lattice design, steel supports to keep it sturdy, and it's painted (which is unusual). Unfortunately, this bridge is a replica of the original bridge ordered by the Jackson County Court on 9/16/1869. The original bridge was 127 feet long before it burned in 1972. A new bridge and commemorative park were dedicated in 2002 after years of land acquisitions and funding issues. This bridge is simply one of the most beautiful covered bridges I've ever seen and easily my favorite in Georgia. But what is even more amazing are all the other wonderful things to do within the parks 100 acres. Original bridge photo - http://www.gadoodles.com/images/History/HurricaneShoalsBridge/OldPhoto.JPG THINGS TO DO There are picnic tables, basketball hoops, multiple playgrounds, walking trails and a gorgeous river to cool off in the summer months. There is also an old (and functional) 1870's Grist Mill/Cotton Gin, Amphitheater and yes, even a put-put golf course. The course itself has plaques loaded with historical information @ every hole. Kids and adults alike will learn a great deal about the history of the park while playing. BRILLIANT! ANNUAL FESTIVAL If all that weren't enough, once a year on the third weekend of September The Tumbling Waters Society hosts ART IN THE PARK - A bluegrass & BBQ festival with handmade crafts, homemade ice cream & pies, kids activities, music and yes... BBQ!!! There is even a "Duck Dash" for cash prizes and a 5k race. Admission is free. Festival info - http://hurricaneshoalspark.net/ FINAL THOUGHTS I missed this year's event, but you can best believe I will have my family at next year's festival. Everything about this place is wonderful. This is Southern outdoor living at its finest, and to think I was just coming to see some old covered bridge. I'm so grateful for life's unexpected and pleasant surprises. I would give this place 10 stars if I could. If you live in the Northeast Metro Atlanta area, you owe it to yourself to come here. 5+++ STARS

Raging rivers and history Hurricane Shoals Park is one amazing place. Just so much about it to like and a place that you can never get tired of because the park changes with the seasons. The fascinating Heritage Village is near the parking lot and is a bunch of buildings moved in from other places to form a glimpse of history as it was in the past. All kinds of different structures that would have be found in a 19th century village. They are open to the public during day light hours and filled with information and facts about what went on back then. Once you move past the village you see a lovely covered bridge, a playground for kids and all kinds of trails and places to explore. Plenty of places to have a picnic or just hang out. And then of course there is the river. Most of the times the river is a peaceful and pleasant place to get your feet wet but we were there right after two weeks of heavy rains and the river was an angry monster that would sweep away anything foolish enough to get in it's way. Something to respect and fear or you will die. A pretty amazing place made even more amazing because it's all free. Just so much to do and see, this is one of those incredible places that deserves far more than just five Yelp stars.

There are also a few side trails that climb up the mountain if you're looking for a bit more of a challenge (including dodging Joro spiders!). The small waterfalls are beautiful, and the cool creek water is perfect for dipping your feet in on a warm day.

It was semi difficult hike just because we live in Florida and use to live in Illinois (AKA Flatland), but we did it. The easiest way to this is from the parking lot, walk to the left and walk down the stairs. Keep walking on the boardwalk and watch for holes in the boardwalk. When the boardwalk is done, keep walking and then you will come to trees, the trees have steps made from the trees, & carefully watch your step and go down. I actually scooted my butt down and then climbed the tree steps. It was not bad, just something I'm not accustomed to. You will see the water and rocks moving and it is just so beautiful. People walk through and sit in the water and take pics. Be careful when you walk through it can be slippery. We had water shoes. Water is so refreshing. We actually walked the long way, which is walking to the right of the parking lot to the start of the boardwalk. We didn't want to walk down the stairs bc they looked pretty steep. It really is amazing. I'd say you will be here about an hour or two. Parking is free and there are a bunch of signs you need a fishing license. Which we don't have. We just parked And walked!

No one was camping or fishing or wandering the grounds (though I did see one park ranger pickup truck on patrol), which meant I had time with the real centerpiece of the park, the Watson Mill Covered Bridge, and the soft sound of the river underneath it carried farther than usual in the damp air. The bridge was built in 1885 by W. W. King, one of Georgia's most skilled nineteenth century bridge builders, and it remains the longest existing covered bridge in the state at 236 feet. It uses the Town lattice truss system, a design patented in 1820 that relies on a crisscross pattern of planks secured with wooden pegs, and Watson Mill is one of the best surviving examples of that method in the Southeast. The bridge once served the workers of the grist mill and sawmill that stood nearby, and it doubled as a community gathering place where people held picnics and even square dances. The Georgia Department of Transportation restored it in 1973, and the bridge became the anchor for the surrounding state park, which preserves both the structure and the landscape that supported it. The posted clearance was too low for my Sprinter van so I walked the length of the bridge instead, letting the boards creak underfoot and taking in the smell of wet timber that always feels older than the structure itself. There is no dedicated pedestrian lane, but the interior is wide enough that I could step to the side when a car approached, and the drivers moved slowly enough that it never felt unsafe. The combination of the rain, the quiet, and the long wooden tunnel made the whole experience feel like stepping back into the late nineteenth century for a few minutes.
