How can I visit Australia and not eat Aussie BBQ? A popular summer pastime, it is often referred to as a "barbie". In my research, one of the places that keeps coming up was Hurricane's Grill. So I headed there after a rainy day at the museums around 3 pm, but I learned my first foodie experience in Sydney - a lot of restaurants are closed between 3 pm and 5 pm. So if you are looking for a meal around that time, you better have a snack. So, I went back to my hotel and then return later on that evening! Hurricane's Grill was established in 1994 in Sydney's famous Bondi Beach. It is styled in similar concept of a South African steakhouse by co-founder and owner of Craig Goldberg. I ordered: a half slab of beef ribs (gluten free). garlic bread and a salad because I need balance. The meat was mouth-watering, tender, and tasty. The basting sauce, which was developed by Craig's father, was delicious. The garlic bread.. had just the right about of garlicky goodness. The salad had the freshest tomatoes. U.S Reviewer here. Just a heads up. Location (5/5): Inside the Harbourside Mall which is really close to Darling Harbour. The location is right next to the Pyrmont Bridge so it has great views and the restaurant is pretty big. No complaints here. Service (3/5): From my usual service in the U.S. which includes tips, I would say the service is better in the US. However, since there is no tip included in Australia, they took my order and delivered my food without issue. So I guess no complaints there. Didn't really get checked on during the meal until I flagged my waiter down for my bill. Food (2/5): I can't believe this place is on a lot of "must-try's" or "top-10" lists for Sydney NSW. The portions might be good but the quality of food is definitely not up to par. I'm pretty sure I've had better home-made garlic bread and ribs that I heated up in my own oven than the food here unfortunately. I highly recommend coming to the US and trying out our steakhouses and ribs in order to understand the rating. 1.) Garlic Bread - I ordered the garlic bread because who doesn't like garlic bread? Big mistake. Barely any garlic spread inside the bread and the bread itself wasn't very good. I took two bites and left the rest of the loaf unfinished. 2.) Pork Ribs / Steak Combo - I wanted to try out both the ribs and steaks in one go and was sadly disappointed in both sides. The steak was cooked okay at medium-rare but was very bland in taste. The highly recommended Pork Ribs came out sort of with a burnt taste and the sauce not super flavorful. The meat does not fall off the bone and requires you to really cut it off the bone and use your mouth to "rip" off the meat. If you guys are in the US, definitely try out Henry's Hi-Life in San Jose,CA or the award winning Phil's BBQ in San Diego,CA to really taste what good ribs/steaks are. Overall a bad food experience compared to what you can get in the US. Service/Location is definitely nice though and I could see why people would come here as its a nice establishment for a business meal/date. I would not come here for the food though. read more

Wonderful views - extensive menu - pricey. This is my first restaurant in Sydney so take my pricing comment with a grain of salt. The best one we had was the teriyaki chicken wings. The rest were above average but not great they are the fish and Chips, Wygu beef burger, and the scallops. The borewors (South African beef sausage) is a good value for $25 because it came with 4 sausage. The taste has very distinctive beef flavor. read more

Hurricanes is a bar and grill famous for their succulent ribs and BBQ meat. The Hurricanes menu is that popular, they have a number of venues around Sydney. You can guarantee a good protein fix there! We visited the Darling Harbour location and you can find it in the Harbourside shopping centre overlooking the harbour with a view of the Sydney skyline. It is a spacious venue with floor to ceiling glass to take advantage of the views. It is extremely large with plenty of tables, a bar and open plan so you could easily host a large party. We arrived at 12 noon and within 15 minutes the place was packed! It clearly is very popular and for good reason. We were promptly taken to our table by lovely staff and seated right at the windows with a lovely outlook. We perused the menu and began with some drinks. The passionfruit mojito was excellent, and you can also get a number of other cocktails, beers and wines from their bar. Food wise, we obviously ordered some ribs!Hurricanes are famous for their ribs and steaks and they use a unique basting sauce to provide a lovely flavour to their meats. Meat cuts are all halal certified from their suppliers and can have no sauce upon request. Since we wanted a try of all of them, we opted for the meat platter with pork, lamb and beef ribs. Whilst they were all good, pork was our favourite. They came with some tasty fries and it was a generous serving. Whilst hurricanes may not be known first and foremost as a seafood restaurant, but there's plenty of seafood options too and we found it to be of excellent quality. Perfectly cooked, the scallops and mussels were served in the open shell, and the platter came with split prawns, half a lobster, salmon fillet, tempura prawns and salt and pepper squid. Served atop a plate of rice, all items were delicious. Whilst we didn't have a steak on this visit, Hurricanes are notorious for their steak. There's numerous meats and cuts to select from. Whether it be the rump, strip stirloin, fillet tenderloin or T bone, you will find your perfect match. Wagyu, dry aged or long fed beef, Meats come with your choice of fries, salad or baked potato and you can order a sauce to accompany it. Hurricanes also serve other main menu items like beef cheeks, lamb cutlets, pork knuckle, grilled chicken, burgers and more. If you are super hungry or a couple wanting to share a meal Hurricanes have a number of combo deals. There's desserts to top off your dining experience. We stopped by during our tour of Sydney and we were very lucky to find the place only half full. I've heard this place gets quite packed most times, most days. We were immediately seated outside with a beautiful view of Darling Harbour on a clear sunny day! That view alone already voted a positive two thirds for the place... Our orders were taken quickly and arrived not too long after. And to compliment the view...the food was indeed a mouthwatering sight...with a taste to match the presentation! This place gives HUGE portions of food so you will definitely get your money worth. However, the food is just ok. We had a variety of food for the table so I will start with the ribs. The beef ribs had great flavor but the meat I wish was more tender. The chicken was great! We got the Portuguese spicy flavor and it was amazing! The garlic mushrooms were not good at all. I love mushrooms so I was so disappointed when I ate them. I got the steak and I ordered it medium and it was still tough. So if you like tender meat I would say rare. We actually didn't have to wait too long for a table considering it was the Aussie summer, it was a weekend and there were tons of people. Yes and thumbs up on their bbq (pork ribs). The steak was decent but something you'd find at an Outback steak house in the US. Full bar and beers available. Our lunch experience was top off with our cute young American waitress. The food here is probably good, I'm not sure yet. I've been here 40 min, seated properly by a waiter. it took 30 minutes to order even though I ask to order right away when I took my seat. after 40 minutes I got my water that I was told I would get as soon as I sat down and once again when I ordered. I wouldn't normally write and review for long waits but there are at least 3 tables that arrived after me with drinks and appetizers. We have a tradition of ribs the day after Boxing Day! Got here just before 12pm and there already a line out the door! Got the half rack of pork ribs $39.50 with chips and a side of mushroom sauce. Service was ok but the place was pretty packed for a public holiday. Ribs were huge for a half serve! Nicely glazed in that original hurricanes sauce! This restaurant was insanely bustling on a Wednesday night, even after 8pm. Despite this, we put our names on the wait list and the hostess said it would be about 10 minutes for our party of 2. We waited right by the front/bar area and started to notice that couples coming in after us were being seated. They didn't appear to have reservations and walked in just like us. We had to check-in with the hostess and I think she realized we should have already been seated because she grabbed the next waitress and directly asked her to seat us then. We ordered the Salt & Pepper Calamari as well as the ribs, a combo of the beef, pork and lamb. Having relocated to Sydney from North America, I had longed for good ribs. I was always recommended Hurricanes to fill that void. We went there during the Christmas season and might I add, be prepared to wait. There was a massive queue that crowded the entire restaurant front and the mall hall way. During the wait, you can order drinks from the bar, however they are rather pricey for the typical stuff. Nonetheless we were seated roughly 30 minutes later. I knew exactly what I wanted and ordered the full rack of pork ribs with sweet potato fries, although it was quite pricey. When the meal arrived, I was initially very pleased as the full rack looked quite large, although it ended up being mainly bones.. The sauce on the ribs was a delicious sweet bbq. I still couldn't finish the full rack in one sitting but as part of my initial plan, it became my left overs for tomorrows dinner. Was looking forward to this dinner having enjoyed the food at their Surfers Paradise restaurant in the past. Unfortunately their Harbourside restaurant was no comparison in the quality of their food. As we later discovered they are not owned by the same people and it showed. We enjoyed the Burrata entree but that's were it ended. The lamb cutlets for main were overcooked in a sickly sweet sauce that could have done with some caramelising. The salad was not fresh and the bread was stale. The manager apologized but wasn't really interested and made no offer to correct or compensate for the poor meals. The restaurant was very busy and was to be expected on a Saturday night and in a high tourist zone. Doesn't excuse the poor showing from the kitchen and the impression was that the focus is on high turnover rather than providing a quality meal. Its overrated. Worst pork ribs i have ever had. It's even worst than my homemade recipe! Terrible. The service was slow and we were seated right next to toilets. I booked Hurricanes at Darling Harbour for my 27th Birthday Party in June. I had 25 guests and we ordered from the set menu which was $65 per person. The menu was pretty good. For $65 per person we were able to get salad and bread for the table, and then choose a main. For the main you could choose from steak, salmon, a vegetarian platter, and the famous ribs - either half or full. Even if you ordered a full rack of ribs, it was still the same price - AWESOME value! The food came out quickly, and there was great service. It was a bit hectic with 25 people and 25 different orders but it all worked out well. The restaurant is loud and noisy, and on Saturday night there is always fireworks at 9pm at Darling Harbour which was nice. I like Hurricane's! Hurricane of flavors ! Three of us went to Harborside mall for dinner on a Sunday evening. Luckily, there was no queue and we got a table within ten minutes. Our server Chaya was really sweet. We chatted a bitgirl and promptly took our order. For starters we had Fried calamari and garlic bread. Calamari was accompanied with scented rice and a sour dip. Garlic bread was crispy from outside and soft inside. It was served on an interesting wooden tray. My partner and I ordered Steak and Half rack (Pork) with Chips. It was drool-worthy ! Succulent ribs loaded with delicious sauces made a mean dinner :). We opted for Pepper gravy which I dont think was a wise choice. Should have gone with something somber. My friend had a steak with jacket potato and a sour gravy ( I don't remember the name). We gulped down the food with bear and diet coke. Very hard to review this place; being a tourist spot you typically do not start off with high expectations; however I was pleasantly surprised by what at first glance appeared would be a typical ribs place. To start with the service was above average and efficient, service came quickly and accurately yet you could still discuss options without being huffed at always a goof sign. Next the food came cooked perfectly, I eat rare and indeed that is what I got, the colleague next to me got his well done satisfactory too! All served together for a table of ten - terrific job. And considering the views if darling harbour the prices seemed okay, at least to someone used to Perth pricing. Located in Harbourside Shopping Centre, Hurricane's is known for 1 thing and 1 thing only....RIBS! They do ribs right and come in beef, lamb and pork which all taste pretty good. I've also heard that the burger was pretty good. Though like most places in Darling Harbour, this place isn't too cheap. The portions are quite large, but still on the pricey side for what you actually get. I would have given this place a 4 star if it weren't for the massive queue that occurs almost every night. If you're thinking about going here for dinner on the weekend...good luck. The ribs are good but not good enough to wait forever. We decided to come here last night during the epic torrential down pour because we seem to love seeing if we can, contrary to popular belief, walk in the rain and enjoy it. We ordered a bottle of wine for the lasses, the boys had some beers and we settled in for quite a bit of meat. There were ribs, ribs and steaks, combinations, salads and bibs. Mostly I think they bring out the bibs because it makes me giggle watching grown men have bibs tied around their necks by wait staff. I know, I have a funny tickle bone... Just be aware that this place is pricey. I ordered their regular steak sirloin. I got a flat bit of meat that was a bit tasteless to be honest and for nearly $30 I was expecting more meat and a bit more flavour. The guys loved their ribs though and were happily munching through their racks which was a good thing. Service was spot on if not a bit constant. We had 3 or 4 different wait staff interrupt our dinner to ask us if the food was ok, the first being our waitress, who I thought should be the only one asking. Came for the ribs, was very disappointed. The meat tasted like it was done with very little spice, or herb, or care prior to being cooked with the sauce. An Australian friend recommended it saying they were the best ribs ever which made me hungry and curious. I should have followed my instinct when I realize it was located in a "mall" which means they're probably a chain..... not my thing, but sometimes I can be wrong. I ordered the ribs and they were disgusting. The first bite was gross but thought I was just over thinking it but the 2nd bite confirmed it, disgusting. I told my waitress politely that I didn't like it and after she talked with her manager they wouldn't knock anything off my bill or offer me anything else. My boyfriend and I waited maybe 40 minutes to get a table here, so we put our names down and walked around the neighborhood in the meantime. Food & Drinks: 5 stars. The wait for the ribs was short relative to other places, probably because they're so popular for that they're likely always making them before orders are officially placed. A local friend brought me here as this is supposed to be one of the "must try" barbecue places in Sydney. I have to say, I was not disappointed. We both ordered a slab of bbq ribs and bbq chicken. The bbq basting sauce is a perfect blend of sweet with a hint of spicy. Not overwhelming, just right. The chicken was a hearty serving as well with two large breasts if I recall correctly. Beverage-wise we had two of their cocktails. I had the ginger spicito, anything ginger I love. This came with Captain Morgan as the liquor with a ginger liqueur, fresh ginger slices, mint leaves, lime wedges and sugar syrup. A very refreshing drink, kind of reminded me of a mojito, but not as minty. My friend had an "ohayo" which I liked more than the ginger spicito. This came with watermelon liqueur, fresh lychee, lime slices, a candied delicious hibiscus flower over crushed ice. Highly recommend this one. The food and drinks were great. The only good reason to come here are the ribs. But be prepared to wait forever. I waited on hold for 20 minutes just to try to get a reservation. At 11 AM. It took us a good 2-2 1/2 hours to get a table, so we'd worked up quite the appetite. The wine selection was decent enough, and we enjoyed the waiter's recommendations. The service was excellent, considering how packed the place was, which came as a very pleasant surprise. Note: As appealing as the lamb ribs sound, just get the pork ribs. They're far superior. It was a "hurricane" in that there was a ton of people of people waiting to eat at this restaurant which was next to Darling Harbour. The BBQ Ribs that they were famous for was not that good in that it was a little bland and char...I had better in California and at a cheaper price. I was expecting something of a higher quality, but nothing surprising. The server was nice and attentive at times, but I find it weird that she asked us if we want bread and butter when it complimentary of the restaurant...thought they would just bring it. Nice to try out and come since I know people rave about this place and perfect to see the firework after dinner, which was beautiful! read more
