The moment you step through the door, it's as if you've been transported back in time to a simpler era where life moved a little slower and everything was made with care. Side note: I completely regret not getting the names of the two young ladies working in the Tea House and the gentleman operating the Gritsmill. Rookie mistake on my part. But I digress. While chatting with the young ladies, they shared some fascinating history about the mill. They told me the gristmill itself was transported all the way from New Jersey to its current home. Even more impressive, the millstone still being used today to grind wheat into flour is over 200 years old and came from France. Talk about a piece of living history! The store itself is spotless, neatly organized, and exceptionally well maintained. The two young ladies were friendly, welcoming, and eager to answer questions and help however they could. Now for the important stuff--the goodies. They make their own cookies, including oatmeal and chocolate chip, along with fresh scones and pastries. Naturally, I exercised great self-control and bought one of each to enjoy later with a cup of coffee. It seemed like the responsible thing to do. From the Gritsmill, we picked up two bags of grits, some scone flour, and a small jar of peanut butter. Unfortunately, we were still stuffed from lunch and couldn't do the Tea House justice by enjoying a cup of tea. Sometimes life presents difficult challenges. Needless to say, we'll be returning, and I can hardly wait. If you find yourself at Heritage Homestead, be sure to stop by the Tea House and Gritsmill. Who knows, maybe I'll see you there.

The gristmill at Homestead Heritage is really interesting. There is a small store attached, which has various baking mixes (regular and gluten-free pancake mix, bread mix, muffin mix, etc), jams, honey, and fruit butters. Most are made on the premises, but a few are from other local farms.

Well if you get the time, you should stop and check them out. The Brazos Valley Cheese store is located at the Homestead Craft Village. It's a cute little place with all kinds of shops and BBQ. The ladies at the cheese shop were very helpful and had all kinds of insights into the cheeses. We had some absolutely amazing sandwiches (enough for two meals) and spent way too much money on sweets, preserves, bread (we took home jalapeno bread - not hihomemade noodles, fresh vegetables (amazing flavored bell peppers and tomatoes), along with other cooking ingredients, and much more. They sell Key Lime Pie feeling in a squeeze bag. I wanted to turn that thing on end and squeeze into my mouth. Reminded me of the old I Love Lucy show.
