I'm so glad The Village Bakery in West, Texas has reopened. It was every bit as good as I remember from years ago. The kolaches were absolutely fantastic, and the dough tasted exactly the way I remember it as a kid growing up eating kolaches. It's great to see this local favorite back in business. All four years of driving between Dallas and Austin in the 70's, we would stop at the Village Bakery anytime they were open. If they were closed, we tried other kolache places and they were okay, just not anywhere near the quality, the soft and tender rolls with such delicious and varied fillings. Not worth the calories! For 55+ years, we stop when we are near, and planning to go this Saturday. SO SAD to hear they are closed. Does anyone know of a kolache bakery as good as the Village Bakery? I've always been a huge fan of Czech Stop so I decided to try this place. The kolaches were pretty good but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's alot better than czech stop though. Honestly I thought these had a bit too much bread and too little filling. However I think this place deserves 4 stars because of the Texas twists. Those were really good. Soft, moist and just the right amount of filling. The filling was spread all throughout the bread. Also got pecan roll and that was okay.. basically it was just bread with some glaze and nuts on top. Slightly disappointed with this because it was supposed to be one of their best sellers and we even got the last one they had left! I think I'll be coming back for their twists when I'm ever headed this way but their hours aren't very convenient so who knows when that'll be ! read more

The Village Bakery is the Czech bakery to go to when stopping by West. This is where the Czech locals go for their kolaches and pecan rolls (if they aren't baking them at home themselves). And this was the first Czech bakery in the U.S. to sell kolaches. This bakery is a short one-minute drive from I-35 -- just go east on Broadway St to downtown West at the exit you might normally take to go to the Czech Stop. The friendly counter staff will describe all of the different things they make and offer to heat up your kolache order. My brother and I stopped here planning to buy just 4 kolaches, but after getting some education from the staff, we ended up buying 20 of them so we could taste the traditional flavors and the ones invented for American tastes. This is a family run establishment that is in the main part of town, which is slightly off the freeway, but not by much. If you want the non-toursity down home feeling, this is it. That said, we were greeted and served by some teenagers that were clearly brothers the whole time we were there. We had some kolaches and some of their pastries while we were there and then bought some frozen kolaches to go. The kolaches here are just okay. I would avoid the sausage ones as I was expecting sausage links and instead, got ground sausage inside when I got home a reheated my first one. It was not that great. However their cookies are soy free, except for the ones that have chocolate chips, (possible soy lecithin,) and the were unsure if the peanut butter had soy or not, Other occasional items are soy, or nut free, but ask if you are unsure or worried. On my first visit, I had their Sandtart, and it was very good, but I prefer their Macadamia Nut cookie that I had on my second visit.. The cookie was mostly soft and sweet, (almost too sweet,) with a mild yielding crunch from the nuts. I think I prefer this cookie over the drier Sandtart. My wife also enjoyed an Apricot Kolache, but since their kolaches are not soy-free, my search for soy-free kolaches continues. We travel between San Antonio and Dallas only occasionally, but if we can come through during business hours, I look forward to stopping in to try more of their other cookies. This is the ONLY bakery in West I'll go to - and it's been that way since I was in college in San Marcos in the 80's. I've tried the "other one" on the highway once about 15 years ago...it was a Sunday and I was desperate for a sausage kolache....it was ok but not even close.... and never again. It's the Village Bakery or no kolaches for me! I always get the spicy sausage and the poppy seed. They're perfect to me. Occasionally I'll get some cookies or a cake or something else to go along with the two flavors, but always those two. Prices are decent, the baked goods are the best, and the staff is always wonderful. I always feel like I'm transported back in time a bit when I come in here. Too bad they don't have a soda fountain too. Over two decades and I think there has been two occasions while driving down south when I didn't stop there on the way. We were on a road trip from Fort Worth Texas and decided to stop in. The kolaches are very good. I had a peach kolache. This is an older bakery that looks like it has been around for years. They have lots of awards for their famous kolaches displayed in the front of the business. I didn't realize that there were competitions for kolaches. Maybe it's that my family has a Czech heritage, but for some reason every time I find myself venturing through West, TX I have to stop and get some kolaches. Like others have mentioned, I usually stop at the gas station bakery on the highway. Not this time, and thanks to Yelp, I ventured in to The Village Bakery and loaded up. A dozen of the meat kolaches and a dozen of the fruit kolaches....oh yeah, go ahead and throw in a few cinnamon sticks. How many kolaches do you think one person can eat between West, TX and Dallas? I stopped at five, even though I'm sure I could have kept going...but I promised myself I'd save some for my wife. These were so good, and I have to say better than the other place I usually go. It's the bread. Something about the bread just keeps you eating. Perfect sweetness, soft...yum. Tried all the sausage ones and the ham and cheese, all fantastic. Had a pineapple kolache, delicious. Most people who stop in West go to the Czech Stop right off Interstate 35. But the 30-second drive into downtown West is totally worth it for hardcore kolache fans. Most kolaches taste like bland white dinner rolls with a squirt of jelly, but the pastries made at the Village are fat and buttery with a generous dollop of fruit filling and a sprinkling of popsika (crumbles made of sugar, flour, cinnamon and butter). The friendly counter staff will describe all of the different things they make and offer to heat up your kolache order. For less than $10, you can get a dozen (either fresh or frozen). The bakery also makes buchte (which is like a giant kolache in the form of a log-shaped cake), pies, gingerbread and cookies. If you make the trek, be sure to sign the guestbook. Though the Village doesn't advertise widely, people come from all over the world to try it -- it just goes to show you the power of positive word-of-mouth. read more

My family makes fun of me because I find different kolache (really pigs in a blanket) places along my route and will make it a point to go by those places even if there is another route that might be more common. This is my favorite kolache shop, followed by one in Clute, TX and then one in Ellinger, TX. As such if I am heading NW out of Houston, I am going through West. If I am heading west then I am hitting Ellinger. And if I am going south to fish then Clute is my destination. It should come as no surprise that all of these places have a Czech background. If they bring nothing else to the table I am grateful so many decided to immigrate to Texas. There is another Czech bakery on the main freeway that is very popular and good, but I had wanted to try something different and saw an billboard for the Village Bakery and decided to give it a try. I am glad I did. I enjoyed these kolaches more so than the other store. The only problem is that they are not open 24 hours and my travel doesn't always allow me to stop by. This is very much a local store in the middle of town. Coming from Houston it is taking a step into another realm to get off I-35, cross the railroad tracks, and enter a small town world and feel. The staff are friendly. The clientele appears to predominantly be local. It is genuinely Czech and in my opinion the best that central Texas has to offer. If you like the small town experience; if you like kolaches; if you don't want the lines and wait of the other stop on the freeway, then this is the place for you. I had read about the famous West, TX kolaches in countless magazines, so when I visited family in Waco I had to take the chance to try them. I bought a prune kolache, an apricot one, and a pecan roll. I know! Only three! Which may be the reason why the counter lady seemed a little put off. What can I say? It was just the two of us and I'm trying to eat better. They were so, so worth the calories. Light, fluffy, and with flavorful, fruity and not too sweet filling. The pecan roll was fantastic. It had a hint o f maple flavor, and the most delicious pecans. Pecans in Texas are better than anywhere else! Beware though: I tried to save half of one for later in the day but it dried out. Do yourself a favor and drive a few blocks into the cute little town of West. It's much more charming than the Czech Stop, and just may be better! read more

Based on the recommendation from the folks at Nors, we headed to the Village Bakery. We were instantly greeted by a very friendly woman - we didn't get her name. She told us about all of the various kolaches, twists and turnovers she was selling. We had a sample of her jalapeno sausage kolache. The bread was SO soft and the sausage was very flavorful. I ended up getting an apple kolache and the Big Guy got a cinnamon twist and a sausage kolache. He loved the cinnamon twist so much that he bought the rest of them. I had a taste and it was a little too sweet for me. He also loved his sausage kolache. My apple kolache was good. In our conversations with the woman, she told us about a man who made sausage in the next town over, in Tours, TX. I don't think he's the kind of operation that would want to be put on the interwebs, but her recommendation certainly kicks this review up to 5 stars. read more

On the road trip to Dallas decided to try something different. Beef and cheese ( hamburger meat and cheese) kolache was great, prefect balance of beef and cheese, not over seasoned, you can taste both flavors. Prune was great as well, prune flavor comes out and the sugar on top crystallized prefect, dough was soft, flavorful, and not chewy like most, the only disappointment was eating the prune, bit into. Hot damn this place is delicious! I love the Czech stop bakery and have been a customer there for years, but today I decided to try the village bakery after seeing s billboard advertising it was the oldest bakery. MAN I am glad I did try this place. The kolaches are so much better, with much fresher and more delicious dough. They also have a crap ton of pies and since pie is basically my favorite food group of all times, this greatly increases my love of the place. The shop is adorable and like a step back into time. The entire staff was warm, friendly and helpful. There was also ZERO like or wait and parking right out front! Finally, there was a $30 for $15 coupon through Yelp, so I was able to get TWO PIES for the price of one. Oh happy day. I will always come back to Village Bakery when I come through West, TX. I used the yelp deal 15 for 30 dollars worth of food. They make authentic strudels and Buchta unlike the other Czech bakeries in town. They still use (water packed) canned fruit (which they cook down with sweetner and spices into the filling) so they aren't as good as my moms Kolache made with fresh fruit from the garden but these are way better than all of the Gas Station shops! read more

Absolutely THE BEST Kolache in the World. Unfortunately many reveiwers are used to the commercialized products which have jelly or jam instead of cooked fruit. And most of the time the dough that they use is regular bread dough. At the Village Bakery not only is the filling real fruit cooked on site, the dough is mixed and cooked daily from a special recipe. I have only been eating the kolache and klobasniky (which was first created by the father of the owner) at The Village Bakery since the early 60's. And even though I am in my mid seventies I travel to West from Burleson at least twice a month (sometimes more) to taste those wonderful sausage Klobasniky and the heavenly apricot Kolaches. read more

Read about this place on the internet as it was the place the locals patronized. Stopped in at the Czech Shop and found the line to be stupidly long, the people standing in it; rude, and the offerings in the case didn't look like they were worth the wait. Then trekked across the interstate to Slovacek's, which is a mini version of Buc-ee's. Kolaches were overpriced (as was everything else), pretty unremarkable, but fresh. The Village Bakery topped these two places with delightful Kolaches with REAL cream cheese filling, delicious fruit fillings and the staff was very nice (which I expect from Texans). Bypass the other two, they are for the tourists only.....you won't regret spending LESS money, for better quality baked goods at this place.....and NO lines. read more

Back before I was diagnosed with a gluten allergy, I would come here as a little girl and eat my fill of delicious kolaches -- so many different flavors my little eight year old mind could not comprehend all the deliciousness. The ladies that work behind the counter are the picture of southern hospitality and indulged my eight year old self licking my fingers and asking for "More!". 18 years later, I still visit this place and buy a little meat kolache for my dog -- he's the only one that can eat gluten these days, but I want to support this little bakery for forever! :) read more

I'm not sure if this is the same Village Bakery from the 1950s & 1960s or not. I have not been to West since my Grandmother died in 1965. Her name was Francis Demek. Her husband was Ambrose Demek and my father was Arnold Demek. My uncle, Joe Vitek and his wife lived in West until their passing as well as my Aunt and Uncle Lillian and Raymond Janek. Grandma Demek lived next to the old Alamo Garage gas station parallel to the train tracks. I think Main Street.??? I liked the bakery Kolaches but my grandmothers' were the best. As a kid I would sneak in the back kitchen door and grab whatever just came out of the oven, prune, cherry, apricot, peach or poppy seed. Eh. The twists were AMAZING but to be honest I was a bit thrown off going in here after having visited the czech shop so many times. They really didn't have much out and the place was empty. The kolache was OK but I agree, too much bread. I am glad I tried to try but I think I will stick with the czech shop down the road. We used to always stop at the little czech bakery that is right off 35, but decided to stop in here and purchase the Yelp deal. We ended up leaving with 2 dozen kolaches and 1 pecan pie.
