I really wanted to go to this place. in fact, I planned my entire NYC trip (I flew in from Athens) around my reservation. They ask for a credit card to reserve the table and have a very strict cancellation policy or you are charged. Which is fairly standard for restaurants with Michelin stars, but this place doesn't have one. About two weeks before my dinner they emailed me and said they cancelled my reservation because they were holding a publicity week with another chef + Chef Buddha. They said I could come but would have to pay over $300 up front to attend. I emailed back and said I was disappointed. They eventually responded and said I could come at two specific times/dates. I agreed but they never even gave me the common courtesy of responding. I got to NYC and called to see what was going on, but they did not have the reservation and I had to fight to get them not to charge my credit card. Not the way to treat a customer, and certainly not up to Michelin Star levels of service. I feel this place is just a publicity stunt and nothing more. read more

HŪSO was definitely an experience but I'm not sure I'd go back. The concept is very cool - you walk into a small shop and are led behind a curtain into the back room which is a very well decorated. It's bit small back there, and it has the feel (in my opinion) that you have to whisper because it's such an upscale place. I definitely felt like I was being watched the whole time, which is probably a mixture of the atmosphere and my social anxiety. We ordered the potato leek soup, HŪSO dog, and oysters. The oysters were such a cool experience especially with the addition of lemon. The HŪSO dog was delicious and the perfect portion in my opinion to split with someone. The soup was huge! We got one each and it was way too much - it's a very rich soup, so I'd ask if you can split it if it's between two people next time. The presentation (specifically the bowl they use) is great. Overall, HŪSO was delicious. But, the atmosphere was a little over the top and it just didn't have a very warm/welcoming vibe. The total bill was just under $300 with (included) gratuity. We will not go back until they graduate to their real restaurant, opening in Tribeca later this year. The food was very very good, with some excellent courses and some that were ok. But the space and ambiance were very much lacking. The space is claustrophobic, the banquette seating is incredibly uncomfortable, you sit staring at a blank wall that is about six feet away, and there are a total of ten diners doing basically the same thing. The music was a very odd mix and annoyingly loud, including a lot of rap and hip hop (which doesn't seem to be a good fit for fine dining). No fault of the servers; the service was excellent. read more

So our recent trip to NYC was pretty much centered around the reservation we made at Huso in order to experience the Buddha Lo Top Chef tasting menu which they extended past its initial run. With only one seating a night and only space for about 20 people i can see why this was such a hard reservation to get. We were hoping to see Buddha that evening but unfortunately, he was vacationing in Europe for some much-deserved R&R. Overall we were extremely happy with the menu and although the plating wasnt exactly the same as on the show, it was definitely a fantastic meal. The staff was very friendly and very patient with everyone and all their questions about Buddha which seemed to be the norm each night as everyone there seems to be a big fan and supporter of the show. Also the shop carriers Nick's 26 spice mix so we picked up a couple of bottles, its a little bit more expensive than ordering directly though his website but when you factor in the shipping its really only a couple dollars more. read more

Buddha a genius and also super nice which is such a rare combination today. Great cooking and great care is what matters most and this will give you all of that. The narrow 10-15 seat spot feels always cozy and never cramped, though he deserves to show off in a larger space. Worth every penny. Highlights are tuna with tonnato sauce and avocado, awesome vin Jaune sauce with white asparagus and egg yolk, and a peanut butter and jelly dessert you'll try to sneak into your pocket before you realize you just finished the whole thing and probably would've made a mess of your pocket anyway. This is actually the second time in the last 12 months that my husband and I have returned to Huso for their 8-course caviar tasting menu. We loved our first experience dining there in May 2021 and this time we decided to come back again because we're also big fans of Top Chef and big fan of HUSO's executive chef, Buddha Lo. If you're a huge fan of fine dining/tasting menu and Top Chef, I STRONGLY URGE you to go to Huso while Chef Lo is still there. In terms of the food, even though it is a caviar tasting, the caviar only serves as a wonderful highlight/complement to the multitude of inventive and exceptionally tasty fish, meat, and dessert courses that Chef Lo concocts in his kitchen. And each course is not just beautiful to behold but absolutely delicious. Even though HUSO doesn't (currently) have any Michelin stars, I thought their tasting menu is easily comparable to the Chef's tasting menu I had at Daniel and Le Bernadin. And for a tasting menu with caviar, the $225 price tag for the 8-courses is actually a great deal (I've seen caviar add on for one course easily be in the $50 - $100 range). Also a note on what to expect - the whole restaurant is very small (there's only 4-5 tables in total so the maximum capacity seems to be around 14). There's only one table turn every night so all guests have their meals start at 7PM for their reservation and each course is served at the same time (so don't come late!) and the meal usually ends around 10. Also this time, we arrived a little early and we saw Chef Lo prepping the dishes and chatting with his staff in the front. We totally broke out into fan mode and he was so gracious and spoke to us for a good 10 minutes about his Top Chef experience and even took photos with us after our meal concluded. I've never gotten so much face time with a chef in any other restaurants I've been to. And the service throughout the meal, in terms of there always being someone (sometimes Chef Lo) always explaining each dish as well as the wine that came with each course (we did the wine pairing), was impeccable. I also highly recommend the wine pairing. They gave us very generous pours both time we were there (we shared one pairing between us both times). Each pairing was the perfect compliment to our dishes and our waitress who also acted as our sommelier were so knowledgeable and gave such great intros to our wine that really allowed us to appreciate it more Now on each of the courses (note that these will change depending on the season but there are a few that stays the same): 1. Steamed Egg Custard with Guanciale, peas, and Kaluga Amber - the egg is so fluffy and the veggies provide a nice crunch and contrast of texture. The caviar and bacon add that sharp burst of saltiness. We literally scraped the dish clean. One of our favorite courses of the night. 2. Seaweed butter with sourdough bread - the top layer is caviar followed by butter and seaweed butter on the bottom but everything spreads so smoothly and just melts in your mouth. The butter spread and caviar were pretty generous so we actually asked for additional bread which smelled amazing and was so fluffy and soft. 3. Tuna tartare with osetra gold - I LOVED this course - the richness of the tuna was held together by this sharp fragrant sesame dressing that's savory and a bit acidic. The radish also adds a refreshing crunch to it. There was caviar but it was the tuna tartare that was truly the star of the dish. 4. Green asparagus with duck egg yok and white sturgeon sauce - I still dream about this white sturgeon sauce (so silky, so much unami) - I can eat this every day with anything. 5. Black Cod and prawn with crevette sauce and keta roe - the cod was perfectly cooked (so moist and tender) and the zucchini provided an acidic burst of lemon lime that really brightened the whole dish. 6. Lamb sirloin with fennel jus and special reserve caviar - the sirloin cut is def gamey but it's cooked to a perfect temperature and you must combine it with the sauce and caviar. 7. Sheep's milk curd, marinated beets with trout roe - we had this course twice and honestly it's one of our favorite courses. It's presented like a picnic blanket with cheese (milk curd), bread, veggie spread (beets) and the trout roe really balance out the whole thing with a tangy hit of savoriness. There's even a delicious green juice. One of my favorite courses both times we were there. 8.Tres Leches cake with Kaluga Gold - One of the best desserts ever. Honestly I might have blacked out at how good it was and forgot to take notes other than I love it more than ever any other desserts I've ever tasted. Spectacular end to an amazing meal! read more

My favorites were the scrambled eggs and the potato leek soup. The brioche that came with the eggs were also divine. Outstanding 8-course caviar tasting menu by Eleven Madison Park alum Buddha Lo. Reasonably priced at $200 pp (wine tasting at $90). Tasting menu available only for dinner at 7 pm, but they have an all-day caviar bar with a la carte menu. They carry many of the premium caviar. I was the only person tonight. We are big fans of Top Chef, so when Season 19 Winner Buddha Lo announced that he would be doing a limited-time tasting menu filled with his best dishes from the season, we knew that we had to go. After joining a long waiting list due to popular demand, we were pleased that Buddha decided to extend the menu for an extra month, and we were finally able to snag one of the coveted slots. The verdict: 1000% worth the hype. We unfortunately arrived 30 minutes late due to a delayed flight, but the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating, and Buddha even greeted us at the door. The front of the restaurant is Marky's Caviar Shop. Huso is located in the back behind a curtain. With just 6 tables, we were immediately impressed by the intimate atmosphere for our tasting. We each started with a glass of wine from their robust selection, and then proceeded to dive into the food. Before diving into our ranking, a small disclaimer: everything was OUTSTANDING. Although we preferred certain dishes, the flow of the dinner was excellent, we left full, and we would order every single item again. Mains: 1. Parker House Rolls with Country Ham Butter: It takes extreme confidence to make bread on Top Chef, but Buddha took the risk and Tom Colicchio called them the best rolls of his life. He is not wrong. These were outstanding. Buttery, flaky, warm, perfectly complimented by the freshly churned butter with salty and tender chunks of ham. I could eat 100 of these 2. Lobster, Carrot, Laksa with Lobster Crouton: The star of this plate was the rich and creamy curry; the heat really crept up on me, but it enhanced the flavor of the perfectly poached lobster 3. Everything but The Bagel: This dish tasted as good as it looked. The smoke from the salmon. The everything seasoned crips. The juicy tomatoes. The rich cream cheese. Everything came together for a perfect bagel bite 4. BBQ Beef Bourguignon with Burnt Ends Gritz: The sauce was so rich and delicious and the beef short rib melted in my mouth. The pieces of burnt ends buried in the grits were also a fun surprise 5. Hamachi, Caviar, Squash, Sauce vin Jaune: I could drink a glass of the Sauce vin Jaune. It was buttery smooth. I am finally getting comfortable with seafood and the hamachi crudo was expertly prepared and the caviar made for explosive pops of flavor 6. Black Cod, Shrimp, Seaweed, Ginger & Scallion: The last in our mains but another outstanding dish. The black cod was so tender and the broth was rich and tasted like the sea Desserts: 1. Pumpkin Pie Millefeuille: The leaves literally changed color as we ate it. This may be the prettiest thing I have ever eaten. The pumpkin pie crumbs and pumpkin cream were also great 2. Strawberries & Cream: Macerated strawberries and frozen strawberries mixed with a delicious and light white chocolate cream. While I normally do not care for white chocolate, it was perfect here. My biggest takeaway from Chef Buddha's meal is that he is a MASTER of balance. The Huso Dog is a must have - their Alaskan King Crab stick is so tender and marry well with the Beluga di Venezia Caviar. Their dishes really bring out the purity of the caviar. Hidden behind the Marky's Caviar store front is a secret restaurant with very limited seating. Every dish has something to do with caviar. The most memorable dishes for me are: the Beef Tartare, topped with caviar. The combination of flavors is like no other beef tartare that I have ever tried. I could eat ten of this. The HUSO Dog, which looks like a hot dog, but it is actually a king crab leg prepared like a lobster roll style, topped with caviar. I also could eat ten of this. And the desert Coffe&Chocolate is also very memorable. It is actually NOT caviar, but tiny cocoa pops on top of a coffee panna cotta, served in a caviar can. Ingenious! WOW, WOW and WOW! I had dinner here last week after rave reviews from my friend and I was blown away. I was a wondering if I had found the right location when I arrived at a gourmet food store only to be enchanted by the fact that indeed we were eating behind a curtain located at the back of the store. This opened up to a secret and intimate dining space which reminded me of a speak easy. I was not well versed in caviar and a little apprehensive thinking I would be out of my depth but the approach to the whole experience was so well informed and approachable at the same time. It was like a show in the sense that we all sat down at the same time ( as they do one seating only) and enjoyed 8 courses of pure genius. Usually at a tasting menu there are a couple of standouts, a few "meh" dishes and a couple you don't like but after every course at Huso the bar was raised in terms of flavour and presentation. I was also pleasantly surprised with the fact that there was caviar included with the dessert course, which worked so effortlessly. After our meal the chef came and chatted to all the tables and made us feel even more special and appreciative of the evening and really restored my faith in hospitality. I have eaten in many Michelin restaurants in New York City and around the world and I truly believe that this hidden gem deserves to be recognised and up there with the greats. This place is tiny but so worth it. Working with minimal equipment (just 4 induction burners and a tiny oven) they're able to turn out refined, delicious dishes.
