A first time experience (on a Monday night) allowed me to have mixed feelings about Zizi Wine Bar based on my expectations. Fairly new to the area (almost a year), Zizi Wine Bar seems to be a good addition to Fidi. We were warmly greeted by the staff upon our arrival which was around 6:30. It was obviously quieter than it would be if it were later in the week. The space was a bit small with tables in the front half while the back section included sofa seating for a more casual setting. We chose to sit at a high top round table as we got settled. I felt the seating wasn't too comfortable and the lighting was a bit bright considering it was a wine bar. Our server was hospitable and knowledgeable offering opinions of the various wines. I was offered a tiny tasting of two red wines and ultimately went for the smooth Pinot Noir. Since it's a Wine Bar, there was a good variety of wines including flights. Two of my friends enjoyed the flight from the Middle East while another bragged about the Rose. As far as food, I believe Zizi Wine Bar's selections are meant to be shared, including the larger plates. The portions are very small so if you're hungry, you'll need to select many plates especially if there's more than 2 in the party. We selected three appetizers: Crazy Baba (an eggplant pesto dip accompanied by pita), Halloumi, and Oyster Mushroom. All were pretty good. The larger mains are by no means a full meal or dinner. All of our selections were served solo without sides. I chose the Chicken Skewer --3 pieces of white meat chicken on a skewer flavored very nicely. The other selections were Branzino, Chicken Shawarma and the Lamb pita. Overall, my friends and I were satisfied with our first time experience at Zizi. The menu selections were tapas style meant for sharing. I think Zizi has 3 locations of which one is an actual restaurant. I can see Zizi being a good spot for a pre dinner drink before dining elsewhere or grabbing a few appetizers with wine. Remember to order enough if a large, hungry group since the portions are small. I don't hold bars in FiDi in very high regards so I can safely Zizi is far by the nicest place I have been to in that neighborhood. It's truly a hidden gem. It's a great spot to hang out after work. We sat in the back lounge, which felt more like someone's stylish living room making it the perfect place to unwind. Now, the wine menu wasn't great specially if you're like me and love a dry, medium-bodied red. The options were pretty limited, which was a bit of a letdown. But honestly, the food more than made up for it. 1. The Jerusalem bagel was hands down my favorite; fresh, crisp and perfect for dipping. 2. The halloumi was good too, though a little on the sweeter side. 3. The charred eggplant dish called Crazy baba was ridiculously good, smoky, and packed with flavor, 4. While the eggplant carpaccio was so light and delicious that I could eat it all day. Our server was super warm, welcoming, and more than happy to offer recommendations. My friends and I were meeting downtown for a bit and were planning to go to dinner afterwards. I suggested Zizi to one of the group members, and she agreed, neither of us realizing that we had been to their Chelsea location together several years ago. We had loved that experience (see review: https://www.yelp.com/biz/zizi-new-york-3?hrid=9PwbdPd4XcG5qToN-R60eg), but the place had also offered a complete bar, while the FiDi one only served wine. Since some of the group members were not as into that form of alcohol, we decided to limit our Zizi experience to appetizers and a single glass before moving to another dinner spot. When we arrived, I was very impressed by the romantic atmosphere of the restaurant. There were dim lighting, candles everywhere, and seductive decor like velvet chairs. We were seated at a high-top table near the main bar, and the space was rather tight between our table and the neighboring one, but we managed to make it work. I saw that other folks were engaging in a wine flight with four different tasting glasses, though I did not see that option noted on their vast wine list. When I asked the server about it, she stated that they did not offer flights (the pictures on Yelp also say otherwise). I pointed to one of the flight trays and asked what that was then. She stated that those diners were just having some samples. How that would be different than a flight was beyond me, but I just accepted her stance and decided to get a single glass. The menu contained mainly Mediterranean wines, and I opted for the 2022 Alexakis, which was from Crete and used the Assyrtiko varietal. The white was from their "Light and Earthy" section, and I agreed that the crisp white was minerally and contained notes of lemon and passion fruit. It was very versatile and enjoyable. As I mentioned earlier, we decided to treat our time at Zizi as more of a happy hour experience, so we ordered a few small plates to share. The sweet, Grilled Halloumi had been cooked in butter and topped with a delicious, nut-free basil pesto and a sprinkling of zesty sumac. The Hummus was extremely smooth, creamy, and flavorful with tahini sesame notes and a topping of zhug spices. It came with soft, fluffy pita points. The Baked Brie was gooey and served alongside two slices of sourdough toast, rather than being encased in the traditional puff pastry. It was plated with a sweet, tart date and lemon jam that was excellent. Lastly, continuing on our cheese-filled adventure, we got the Brioche Grilled Cheese, which was a decadent sandwich composed of buttery brioche, gruyere, feta, Kalamata olive tapenade, za'atar, and zhug. The briny olives added a uniqueness that really complimented the rich cheese. Given its heaviness, splitting the thick, grilled monstrosity into four pieces wound up being a wise decision. I should also note that we had tried to break up the dairy fest with an order of the Cauliflower Lima, but we realized that it had never been delivered to our table. At that point, we just let it go, but we had been eager to try it. Otherwise, everything we did taste was delicious. Zizi Wine Bar provided a nice atmosphere for our group to enjoy some snacks and beverages, but there were certain service-related aspects that could have been improved. It was a cozy hideaway in a corporate area, but I would be more likely to return to their Chelsea location for a more elaborate beverage selection. read more

The eggplant was out of this world insanely delicious. I will dream of this dish for a long time coming. The other dishes again we're good just nothing to "write home about". Solid spot to grab a glass or bottle of wine and light bites. There's another location in midtown but finally tried this one. Shared a bottle of wine after choosing between the Or Haganuz and Apla. We enjoyed the Cabernet Sauvignon more than the Xinomavro blend. Also ordered the Grilled Halloumi (basically just grilled cheese but the basil pesto added a nice touch to it) and the Jerusalem Bagel (a mix between a pretzel and bagel with a side of olive oil) to share. We sat in the back which was way quieter than the front, but the front was more lively and intimate. The staff was very helpful in choosing which wine to pick and always checked on us. We did miss the happy hour since it ended at 6pm but was still enjoyable otherwise. Recommend as a place to grab a glass of wine or as a date spot. read more

Went here on Sunday night and got a cheese board, the chicken skewer, and a few glasses of wine. The service was fantastic, like seriously the bartender who served us could not have been nicer, the food was yummy, the two white wines that I tried were good (not incredibly exciting but tasted very good) and a dark intimate wine bar is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Such an amazing addition to the neighborhood! FiDi was in major need of a good wine bar and Zizi is the absolute best. The service and attentiveness of the staff is always above and beyond, even when they're super busy. There is a super fun wine list and the way the wine menu is structured (with tasting notes included!) is great for helping direct you to the kind of wine you're looking for. The food is also SO GOOD! Some fave menu items for me so far have been the crazy baba, halloumi, chicken shawarma, and the branzino. The vibe of this place is cozy, lively, and bustling.
