We came here using credit (thankfully), because this ended up being one of the most expensive and least worth-it meals I've had -- even though a couple things did shine. Food:3/5 The best thing we had was the mango sticky rice -- really balanced, not overly sweet, and a portion. But the rest didn't land: - The rice was way too salty, which shocked me because I grew up eating dim sum rice and it's never like that. - The steak with beef and broccoli was also super salty -- the sauce, the meat, everything -- and the vegetables were a bit overcooked. Two special wine pours alone were about $50, and the total ended up around $300, which was wild for the quality. Honestly, I'm just really glad we had credit, because paying full price would've hurt. Service: 4/5 The service was actually great -- our server (Ken) was incredibly kind and attentive. Came here with Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit. We got the Water Spinach, Rice Noodles, Sweet and Sour Fish, and the Vegetable Mala Dry Pot. The dishes were all quite expensive, and nothing really stood out to me, except for the Sweet and Sour Fish. (It reminded me of a really elevated Fish Stick dipped Sweet and Sour sauce, which I actually enjoyed) The Vegetable Mala Dry Pot was too strong spice-wise, making each vegetable in the dish taste the same. The Rice Noodles and Water Spinach weren't anything too special either. The ambiance of the restaurant was quite cozy and dimly lit, which gave a romantic feel (though the seats were pretty close to one another). The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive - I was running 30 minutes late because of a subway cancellation and they were extremely generous with not canceling my reservation or pressuring me to hurry up, which I really appreciated. Cost of everything with tip was ~150, which was the exact amount of the Dining Credit. At 915 we went up again and said it had been an hour-- they apologized and let us go without paying anything. Such a disappointing experience. Really tried to give them the benefit of doubt but after an hour and they didn't even give us fries or THREE oysters we ordered AND didn't even bring us something and apologize was very very upsetting. This is easily, easily, the best food I've had in my entire life. We got the salt & pepper tofu- soft and crunchy at the same time with the best coating of salt&pepper and a spicy sauce to dip into. We got the shake shake fries- the perfect little "snack" to have in between every bite of food- there were so many in the bag and it was like fancy fries. The XO noodle werr a complete hit- I really enjoyed the unique texture with the delicious sauce it was coated in. Hands down my favorite dish was the crispy fish in sweet and sour sauce- it is more tomatoey than sweet and sour but it was the best version of sweet and sour and the fish was perfectly crispy and soft. Lastly we had the duck noodles. I'm going to be honest, I was stuffed at that point so we took it to go and ate later but it was an interesting taste. I could go without it but I didn't have it for real since it was the day after. we had a dessert with matcha ice cream and this red bean Japanese milk cake- oh my gosh it was the best thing ever. We arrived at opening without a reservation and were seated as the 2nd party, and soon after the restaurant filled up. I thought the dishes are quite unique compared to other Chinese restaurants in the city - particularly the rice noodles in XO sauce & the sweet and sour crispy fish. The rice noodles were extremely pillowy, and the crispy fish was cut into diamond pieces which made it really easy to eat. The string beans with minced pork were also cooked perfectly. The only thing we really didn't like was the dessert. Of the 2 options we got the milk tea bread pudding that came with grapefruit and black sesame ice cream. The waitress recommended trying a bunch of starters, so we got the mouthwatering chicken, cucumber and wood ear salad, rice noodles, the bean curd with shishito peppers, and the seared scallop for our "main." The size of the main was more or less the size of the starters. Everything was just okay. Nothing particularly interesting with the flavors. I think back when it opened and everything on the menu was $30 or less, maybe it would've been a smidge more excusable, but now nearly half the mains are over $40 and that seems ridiculous Ambiance is... interesting. Kind of industrial linoleum dungeon-core? Intimate East Asian restaurant. Snug seating with most of the tables seating two. There's a bar counter plus one large corner table. The aesthetic is dark and simple which fits in with retro feel of this corner of Canal Street. I believe they only had wines and a rice beer. The wines listed by the glass were pricey but interesting. I think there were eight options by the glass. We started with salt and pepper tofu. They had a light crispy too them. Just a mild crunch. It came with a chili oil aioli which had a sort of cheesiness to it. My favorite part was the seasoning on the tofu. The waitress kindly accommodated us with a sweet chili sauce too. We greatly appreciated that. Next we had the rice noodles with XO sauce. These were short and thick rice noodles similar to ttoekbokki. Quite cakey and doughy. I enjoyed the pillowy texture. I love umami so the XO sauce was perfect for me. It a sauce based on dried shrimp and scallops. It mends caramelized and briny flavors into potent blend. I suspect it's a love it or hate it sauce; fortunately, I was on the love side. We shared the string beans with minced pork as a second appetizer. I think we could have skipped this one as we ordered an entree too. I was starting to get full as we finished up this item. It was similar concept to the previous starter too with oily caramelized sauce. We opted for the duck leg confit zhajiang noodles. I don't recall having this style of noodle before. These were long and slightly thick with a textured perimeter. It was sort of like a long and thin lasagna. I guess the lasagna of Chinese noodles. They were served in a bowl with pulled duck bits, Lima beans, cucumber, and diced tofu. Everything was served partioned, so we medleyed it together. Not sure if that was the right call or night. It eat like a noodle salad. My wife snuck in an order of dessert when I stepped aside for the restroom. We had a mixed dessert plate with espresso ice cream, a pudding cake, and a couple slices of citrus. Fun balance of flavors a texture. Ice cream was expectedly creamy and earthy. This small and sort of hidden restaurant is a few steps away from the subway (F) at the end, or beginning, of Canal Street. The inside is pretty small, and the tables even smaller. Manipulating the tableware when food arrives is a task for Magnus Carlsen....sort of. They do have a coat rack, but you might be better off using your chair. The hostess was bubbly and our server was quite helpful. On his suggestion we ordered 3 apps, Salt & Pepper Tofu/Hong Kong Prawn Toast/Rice Noodles w/XO sauce, and 2 mains. Typhoon Shelter Style Fried Chicken, which might be better in a hurricane, and Beef & Broccoli (everyone's go-to, Chicken & Broccoli was not an option). Out of the 5, the Rice Noodles was the best. Something that "Xi'an Famous Foods" wish they could make. Their version of Beef & Broccoli used high end meat and was not drenched in thick sauce. Winner !!!!! The space is small with limited seating, a small outdoor patio, and an open kitchen with bar seating. A reservation is a must because of the small space but they do have limited walk in bar seating if you are okay with a wait. It's worth it! We started with the duck confit spring rolls, little rice noodles with XO sauce, shake shake fries, cucumber & wood ear, and string beans with minced pork. The spring rolls, XO noodles, and shake shake fries are all a MUST order! The spring rolls are amazing and are served with a sweet, umami sauce that I could bathe in. Perfectly crispy and flavorful. Get them! The rice noodles and XO sauce were also mouthwateringly delightful and let me wishing I had ordered another. The shake shake fries omg. So good! I could have made a meal with just the apps. If I were local I would be here for happy hour every week. The sweet and sour crispy fish was good but I found the breading to be a bit too thick. I literally walked in off the street. Never heard of Tolo before. Didn't even know what kind of food was on the menu. A complete blank slate. But I was hungry and the other nearby restaurant only took cash. The street was mostly empty but Tolo was near capacity. A few people were seated outside. I managed to get a seat at the bar - and I'm so glad I did. The food literally arrived directly from the kitchen - crispy and piping hot. I watched as they prepared each meal. This was one time I made a rare exception for something deep fried - the S&P Tofu with chili aioli. Probably one of the best tofu dishes I've ever had. Definitely memorable & unique. The staff was super polite, pleasant and very welcoming and attentive. They accept reservations via Resy; they also accommodate walk-ins if possible. It feels very comfortable yet professional & streamlined. I later learned Tolo is Michelin guide rated - and received a prestigious Bib Gourmand designation. A Bib Gourmand is awarded to restaurants that serve delicious simple, comfort foods at reasonable prices. Pricing is actually a key component of the award - it must cost less than a set specific amount, averaged over a three course meal. That's what distinguishes the Bib Gourmand from Michelin star culinary awards - where the sky is the limit as far as prices go. Where is the most expensive Michelin star restaurant? Not in New York. It's in Tokyo, Japan - Ginza Kitafuku - the tasting menu costs over 2 thousand dollars. That makes New York's Masa look cheap at an average cost of 950$ Well, sadly it looks like I'll have to win the lottery to be able to afford either Ginza K or Masa. If you like Parcelle, you'll love Tolo. Here were the dishes we got as a group of 6: Salt & Pepper Tofu: There were maybe 6 tiny squares of fried tofu in this dish. Was not worth $10. Would not recommend! An entire block of tofu at the supermarket costs $2. Tuna Tartare: Also tiny bite sized portion. The amount of fish could've fit in one soup spoon. Sticky Rice: Loved the Chinese sausage in this, but again, small for the price. Little Rice Noodles: This was my favorite! Fried rice rolls in XO sauce had nice texture and chewiness along with some charred bits. Bean Curd Skin: This is a pretty standard Chinese dish. It was a tad dry. Seaweed Shake Shake Fries: Their take on Hong Kong McD's shake shake fries. Fun for those who know it, but does not compare to the OG! String Beans: Second favorite of the night, you can't go wrong with string beans and minced pork! Duck Breast: The black garlic really made this dish. The duck was cooked well and the endives elevated it. However, it felt a bit out of place with the rest of the dishes we got and the group did not love it. Fried Rice: Standard, solid fried rice. Nothing special. Sweet & Sour Fish: Tender fish fillets and a tart sauce to cut through the deep fried oiliness. No complaints on this one! We loved it. Wine: What I loved about the wines is that after your dinner, they send you an email with the wines you had for the night. I usually always forget or have to take a photo, so this is so smart! The food was decent but I didn't think it was worth the hype and the dishes were expensive given the portion size/what they were. The best dishes of the night were the fried chicken (it had a juicy interior) and the rice noodles. Other decent dishes were the bean curd with shishito (though my husband was disappointed in this one), the sticky rice with Chinese sausage, the water spinach. Definitely skip the dong po rou - it wasn't tender at all and had a really bad tasting sauce. They looked like they had a decent wine menu, which was a plus. The interior wasn't great. Fun music and vibes but there wasn't sufficient insulation from the door during the winter so we were cold the entire meal (and my husband is never cold). It's also really small and cramped inside. Some friends and I came to Tolo a few weeks ago, I guess it was the first weekend they opened. It was so new that they didn't even have a sign yet, so we had a bit of trouble finding it when we got there. Once inside, it was super cozy though. We were a group of 5 and had a reservation for 7:30PM. I'm a bit conflicted on how to rate the service as the sign said we had 90 minutes to dine, but we were basically rushed out by 8:30PM. Literally, they kept coming back to the table to clean up and asking us if they could start removing things. Definitely didn't make us feel too great, so we paid quickly and left to find another spot to get more food/drinks. Onto the food. We ordered a bunch of small plates and couple mains: - Smashed cucumber - Raw tuna - String beans - Little rice noodles - Sticky rice - Shake shake fries - Bean curd - Scallops - Crispy fish The raw tuna was probably the best thing here. The portions are tiny, so we had to order 2 of these and a few of the other dishes too. We liked the rice noodles and sticky rice as well, there was a lot of flavor. We were not a fan of the bean curd, cucumber, or the fries. The rest were just ok. My friends really liked the drinks though, they tried 2 different drinks each, so would probably recommend coming here for drinks over the food. A newer restaurant in the lower east side, and boy am I glad I made the trek from Hells Kitchen where we were staying to eat here on my visit over Memorial Day Weekend. I saw an IG Reel about this place, and I never trust those but once I saw it on Eater, I knew I had to go. It's a fusion asian - hong kong style dishes with an AMAZING wine menu. It's a smaller restaurant, and the table for two was SO small we had to squeeze everything in. I did love that you could see the chef and kitchen, and the bar seats looked comfortable. The two of us did some negotiations and shared everything, we got: Duck Confit spring rolls - the black bean sauce on here was so good we asked for more; cucumber and wood ear wasabi - lovely kick from wasabi and a cooling dish for the hot day - I love the crunch of the wood ear; little rice noodles with XO sauce (as a rule I ALWAYS order anything with XO sauce, it's always going to be good - and I loved this dish); seaweed "shake shake" fries - when I fell you this $10 order of fries was crack, it was so good I got it to go even though I didn't end up eating it later that night, I wanted to. The fries are so so good, I can still taste it as I write this. Now I've not been to Hong Kong for their shake shake fries, but these were hands down the best fries I've ever had. The string beans with minced pork was fine, I think honestly string beans at asian places are never the right thing to order, I'm always disappointed. For the entree, we got the Crab Fried Rice and the Sweet & Sour Fish. I wanted to like the fish so much but for me the breading was WAY too thick, I loved the sauce. I also liked the Crab Fried Rice with the sweet and sour sauce on it. I think the apps were so good and those fries, maybe the entrees were lackluster. I got one glass of the GL Jean-Pierre Robinot, Chenin Blanc, and they do an amazing natural wine curation here. I want to eat the oysters and get a bottle of wine next time I come! The F train dropped me off so close to this little gem on Canal, I was so happy to be out of the cold so quickly and into this intimate teeny tiny restaurant for a dinner reservation. We hung our coats and got right to it, going over each menu item and settled on: salt & pepper tofu with chili aioli, Hong Kong prawn toast, little rice noodles with xo sauce, and for our mains--typhoon shelter style fried chicken and beef & broccoli. Everything was delicious except the fried chicken was a little too shake-and-bake for me. I did enjoy dipping the rice noodles into the crispy crumb bits for a fun crunch but I'll skip the chicken and try the duck next time. The tables are pretty tiny and cramped and after 2 glasses of Meinklang I was orating Greek tragedies about my work week with my hands and knocking things around. We found ourselves moving the little candle all over the table to make room for the next dish but that's nyc dining! I chose a perfectly bright Austrian orange wine to go with all the yummy fried and saucy dishes and found myself not caring to venture into the extensive wine menu to pick something new to try. For dessert we had the sago pudding and the bread pudding. The sago was souuurrrr and was a little weird with a scoop of matcha ice cream. It was too drafty and cold for something so refreshing, it's definitely better suited for a summer menu. On the other hand, the warm sweet bread pudding was perfect and a nice end to the meal. Service - we had a reservation for 6pm on a Thursday night. The tables outside and inside were almost empty except for about 2-3 tables. There were still plenty of tables open. But yet, they chose to seat us at the bar. Upon request of getting seated on a table instead, he looked at all the open seats and then proceeded to tell me that there were no tables open. Hmmmm ok maybe they're already reserved? But we also had reservations. But ok we didn't argue. A few min later we were offered a table that was in between 2 parties that were already seated despite all the other open tables. We ate and left, the tables were still open. I went to Tolo recently and had a good experience. To start, we ordered the Little Rice Noodles w XO Sauce. I really enjoyed the noodles; they were so chewy and bouncy. The sauce was good (tasted like XO sauce haha) except the dish was overall a little greasy. For the main, we ordered the Duck Breast, Endive & Black Garlic. I really enjoyed this dish as well. The black garlic sauce was very flavorful. The endives were well cooked (slightly mushy texture but in a good way??) and the duck breast was very juicy/melt in your mouth. But I will say, I found this dish to be a bit too fatty for my liking. We were also celebrating a birthday so we ordered the Matcha Ice Cream with Peach Sago and Dragonfruit. This dessert was very skippable. The only flavor was from the matcha ice cream; I couldn't taste any peach flavor in the sago. The service at the restaurant was very good!! I loved our meal here!! The service was super friendly and attentive -- and it's not a super big restaurant but also didn't feel loud or too crowded. Here is what we ate: MUST ORDER: Crispy Fish -- unreal. Perfectly cooked and cut and battered in a way that makes every bite even and delish!! I am not usually a fan of sweet and sour but this was perfectly balanced!! Crab Fried Rice -- you have to get this to go with the fish I don't make the rules! Also it has big chunks of crab! GOOD: Duck spring rolls -- very good and a perfect was to start the meal, but didn't blow me away. XO noodles -- I thought I was going to LOVE this dish but I felt like it didn't have enough sauce which was the really delicious part! I did love the chewiness of the noodles though. Such a fun new Chinese restaurant with wine list curated by Parcelle! This spot was so cute and cozy inside -- super ideal for a date night or 1:1 with a good friend. The menu has tons of dishes that look delicious, so it's hard to narrow it down, to be honest. Some of the stand outs for me on my first visit were the rice noodles, string beans with minced pork, seaweed shake shake fries, and the fried chicken. (Though I would've loved some sort of sauce with the chicken!) The vibe is amazing and the service was attentive. We got good recommendations on both food and wines and I'm super excited to go back again to try out more dishes! read more

It's taken me a week to figure out how to write this review. I had a horrible experience here. The waiter (Jake) wrongfully accused my table of stealing silverware and then actually refused to apologize when we expressed how inappropriate the accusation was and how upset we were by it. A very weird vibe all around after that and super disappointing because the food was actually good. Won't be going back and recommend no one else does either!! Can find just as good of food somewhere that doesn't make you feel extremely uncomfortable! Try Bonnie's in Greenpoint! Not a fan and would not recommend. Every dish I got was extremely salty and the flavors seemed all over the place. Following is a break down of eat dish I got. I started the whit the seaweed fries and they were EXTREMELY salty, the texture was good but it's hard to focus on texture when it feels like you're shoveling salt in your mouth. The other starter I got were the OX rice rolls. They tasted good, good texture a bit salty but nowhere close to how salty the other dishes were. However, I did not think it was worth the price with the portions being on the small side and it was not an especially inventive dish as this can be found a quite a few Cantonese spots in the city. For mains I had the confit noodles and the sweet and sour fish. The noodles were very disappointing, the noodles themselves were bland and clumped into one solid form that was hard to break apart and mix with the sauce. The duck confit was incredibly salty and actually quite tough to chew, I could not have imagined this at all for a confit. As for the sweet and sour fish, parts of our fish was burnt with a bitter taste from the burnt batter. The batter was very thick and over cooked making the fish very hard. Overall, I would say safe your money and go elsewhere. There are so many better Asian style restaurants in that area for far cheaper and monumentally better taste, quality & portions. Came the week they opened, and it was pretty good but think they were understandably still working out some opening kinks. They didn't have the pork, which I really wanted to try. The other dishes were pretty good. I liked how chewy the rice noodles were, and the fries were surprisingly one of my favorites of the night. The tables can be a bit cramped. We went with a party of 4, but I felt it was difficult to squeeze all the dishes on the table and it might have been better for a party of 2. A new, funky place in Chinatown. I like how small the restaurant is, BUT it's not true Chinese food. More of a fusion place. Definitely recommend the salt & pepper tofu as well as the bean curd. Both delicious! Don't get the raw tuna. It's disgusting. read more
