Expensive ahhhh place, get ready to spend a dollar more on basic good you can purchase at walmart that cost a quarter

I always forget about this Hy-Vee for some reason.. But why it's really nice! Great health food section, great large produce section.. The Beer Fridge is big enough to live in, and they have a Starbucks too! The store is laid out well, and stocked to the max with all those things you have come to expect about Hy-Vee. The pharmacy at this location is frustrating to say the least. I have had to do more work myself to get my meds filled with this pharmacy than any other pharmacy I've used. I've been waiting on meds for several days and am now out of them because their staff can't communicate with each other or their patients. I am switching to a new pharmacy. read more

Definitely love this hyvee. It has a variety of health aisles. Even a whole gluten free aisle. Makes me happy because I just developed Celiac and finding a whole aisle blew my mind! I got some cereal and gluten-free snacks that are hard to find elsewhere. The people working in the aisles are always friendly and willing to help. The cashiers always in a good mood which makes it a great experience. They have a reward system too which is awesome. The floral store needs improvement on customer service but I wrote a review on that already today. Overall they have a wide variety of food and drink selection. I found all types of kombucha here that I love. Their fruit and vegetable selection is alway nice and fresh looking. I always enjoy grocery shopping here for all my needs. read more

Love the Chinese here ! I wish the customer service was more helpful and friendly at the Chinese station! I usually go with a 2 entree combination meal with white rice and egg roll! This time I got five spice chicken and sesame chicken! I love the sesame chicken ! Sweet and tender pieces of yummy glazed breaded chicken. The five spice was hottttttt! It's not my favorite Hy-Vee location but it's A-OK. Service is good and the people are friendly. They have a great health food section. Their produce section could use some work with someone checking for freshness. There was a lot of stuff on the verge of going bad or already not in good shape. It's happened a few times at this location, but with the volume of items that they carry it's easy to see how it could happen. There is a Starbucks and a big beer fridge. Really just a Hy-Vee that's a bit smaller than other locations, but has what you need. read more

This location has hired security and after trying to enter the store with the security guard stopping people twice in front of the doors and after being told there was a mistake both times with the registers (Maybe fix the registers) I have to think this policy is on the same level as Hyvee market grills. I am all for stopping crime but as rarely as I go to this old store I find it a bit concerning that store security was confronting people both times and both times were the result of a malfunction with registers. Hyvee should be charged with a crime for the prices they charge for their terrible baked goods and their cookies are hard enough for criminals to use to tunnel out of prison (Do not send Hyvee baked goods to prisons people will escape with them)! I hope we get a Kroger or Publix to compete with these guys. Maybe you missed the market grills that are all now Whalburgers because Hyvee cant cook food worth a flip but this was a huge loss and being as the Whalburgers in other states are much better than Hyvee run ones I would say they need a CEO from another grocery store chain. read more

I've always seemed to have good experiences at Hyvee stores but not this one.I had some Pepsi that i bought and when i got to the car I noticed it was leaking. so i went in to exchange it and the customer service lady was very condescending about it but i did end up getting a new one. Not very welcoming for the smile in every aisle. read more

Even though liquor sales stop at 2am, they close their section at 11pm regardless. And they don't care. No reason to not let someone go get what they want. They lose my business for this now & moving forward I'll go to Fareway. Also, poorly stocked, low selection of foods. Honestly I go here for the double Redbox & mailbox :) read more

This is my favorite des moines hyvee location. The way the store is set up is nice and easy to find anything you could need. My wife and I shop this location at least once a week. Usually even if we are closer to another location we will drive to get to this hyvee instead. The people are always friendly and the bakery section is always stocked up full of goodies. We have never had a bad experience with any employees. The pharmacy is always full of smiling people when we pick up prescriptions. This is a great hyvee that I am sure we will shop for years to come. I recommend this hyvee to anyone looking for fast friendly service with a smile. read more

No place to self serve eat cafeteria line food, nor to get your own drinks. To get a seat, must hold plates at Market Place Cafe doorway waiting for a seat, and pay the waiter separately and leave a tip to bring beverages, or eat in your vehicle. Menu items in the cafe start at about $9.00. Not cost friendly to workers, families with kids, Seniors. The quality of the cafeteria-line, pizza, and oriental food-line is very, very good. However it would be more convenient to self-serve your own drinks and have a place to sit to eat without having to pay extra. Employees can take their cafeteria-line food to their own sit-down employees-only break room. read more

The music in the market grill is way too load! Very hard to carry a conversation. The staff was unable to turn it down due to corporate policy....I was a regular visitor but no more....I need a place to relax and have a pleasant meal....not be bombarded with load music. read more

They get a one star from me because they are the home of rotten fruits and vegetables. I don't say this from merely one or two visits. I am talking hundreds of visits. I can pick up a bag of radishes or turnips and 99 times out of a 100 they will be rotten or "woody" as they used to be called decades ago by farmers that grew them locally. Potatoes often look good from the outside only to get them home and find a few rotten, smelley ones hidden among the good ones. Canalope is seldom rotten but is poor in taste and has a matching pale light orange color inside instead of a deep orange color and hearty flavor. It's like eating cardboard. They also sell mini cucumbers for literally twice the price of walmarts mini cucumbers. But more than crappy fruits and vegetables, what really ticks me off about Hy-Vee is their weekly "sales." Next time you are there and you see some of their red tag sale items, look at the normal price tag underneath the red tag "sale" sticker. You will most often find the EXACT SAME EVERYDAY PRICE ! What a scam. But don't take my word for it. Look for yourself. You'll see that MOST of the time the item is actually not on sale. I am NO fan of Walmart but they usually can beat Hy-Vee's prices and often the quality is much better. Bread is another good example. Cottage Bread is half the price at Pajama-mart....... I mean Walmart. I could give an entire list of items that are cheaper at Wallyworld than at Hy-Vee, but you get my point. Now the good things about this particular Hy-Vee : the staff is friendly and helpful. The store is very clean. Most items are locted where you would expect them to be. But I can't overlook the rotten fruits and vegetables. Even more so I can't accept the phony "sale" items. There is a new Fareway store opening soon at 4th and grand in west des moines and the day it opens is my last day shopping at a Hy-Vee. Now you'll have to excuse me while I go throw away yet another bag of ROTTEN RADISHES. read more

Went to the deli counter for a sandwich/meal combo after work. The rye bread was tough as nails and the meat was rubbery at best - as if it had been sitting for days. It was a "meal" deal which included a drink. I was told that their 2% & skim milk were unavailable since the machine wasn't filled and the clerk I was ordering from "didn't have time to do it." Not a pop drinker, and unable to substitute anything else for the drink (besides WHOLE milk...who actually drinks whole milk anyway? Isn't that for butter-making?), I left with just the sandwich. I should've gone without and had a big breakfast the next day. Horrible. read more
