"The drummers and jugglers in Montreal Don't even exist at all" (Rufus Wainwright) One of Nelligan's greatest attributes is its location. This grand hotel is squarely located between the Old Port and Old Montreal neighborhoods, so you literally have hundreds of cool places to visit or dine at within minutes. The Nelligan is an old hotel in an old city, so if you're expecting something like a Marriott in a suburban location, you'll be greatly disappointed. In the mid 1800's, the current Nelligan hotel was once four separate historic buildings that over the years contained a warehouse, grocery store, paper company and pharmaceutical store. In 2002, these various structures were rebuilt, refined, updated, and joined together to launch the new Hotel Nelligan. Walking around the hotel and trying to find your room number can be adventurous because we encountered numerous small staircases in the corridors. To go from our room to the elevator, we had to go up one small staircase, make a few lefts and rights in a hallway, and then down a second small staircase to the hallway with the elevators. And since I mentioned the subject of room numbers, that turned out to be a real thorny issue, because on check-in day, the signs directing us to room 323 brought us nowhere near room 323. The signs were wrong. We found a chambermaid who told us "the signs are wrong" and escorted us on a long circuitous walk to our room. The next day printed "corrections" to the room number signs had been tacked up. Another issue we encountered (although it sure wasn't the hotel's fault) was the construction on St. Paul West that effectively closed the street and vehicle access to the hotel. The street was totally torn up from curb to curb by heavy equipment and there were plywood walls defining the very narrow sidewalks up and down lower St. Paul West including the hotel entrances. There were also plywood sheets atop the torn-up sidewalks. Walking down the narrow sidewalk with suitcases was nearly impossible. When we drove up to check in, of course the street was closed, but there are some very helpful valets who have cones and markers set up on the corner of St. Paul and St. Sulpice. They were fantastic and let us park there while we walked to the hotel with our luggage and checked in with the front desk and the hotel valet station. Truth is, every hotel employee we interacted with was FIVE STAR FANTASTIC to deal with. Our room was pretty big with a cool stone wall. The satellite reception and WIFI worked well, the bed was comfy, and the big bathroom was great, with a huge rainfall shower and good pressure and temperature. So, as long as you can anticipate the traffic and access problems, and take everything else with a grain of salt, you can really enjoy your stay here at a very cool old-school hotel.. read more

This place is poppin'. With 2 connecting restaurants, a reception area, a lobby bar and a rooftop bar, there were always people in the area and something going on. This is a popular area of the city in Old Town. This was in my Top 3 nicest of hotels that I've ever stayed. You can see that the entire building was recently renovated and updated. I even took a bath in the clawfoot tub (I haven't taken a bath in a tub since around 2011). When I return to Montreal, I'll be staying here again. read more

Am I going off-kilter compared to all the other glowing reviews here? I hate to say it- but I will: this hotel has lost its luster for us. We actually stayed here on our last Dec '19 trip before the pandemic and I had to come to terms recently with some of our room's idiosyncrasies. Hôtel Nelligan thrives on excellent front-desk assistance as well as valet service- and I can't take that away from them. Can I also mention that our bed was crisp and comfortable and that even when breakfast began at 7am downstairs, we never had any food smells creeping up our room- which clearly tells me they must have a great ventilation system. Unfortunately, this bigger room we stayed in had a (1) smaller bathroom and only equipped with an outdated bathtub (same like our '19 visit) with a wall that was almost 3' high. 2) The outdated shower curtain was visibly wrinkled, (3)the bathroom sink had poor drainage (same issue from last visit) and took forever for the water to go down- so every time I washed my makeup off, I'd see unclear water clinging to the sink's inside wall. Just no. (4) Handheld shower head only. When I'm vacationing, I like my old school shower head mounted on the wall- not detachable. (5) Lighting was horrible- with almost a fluorescent tinge. And besides those 2 small ceiling lights, putting on my makeup was even more horrendous. (6) the tall wooden caddy used for towels and toiletries was retrofitted to have one leg on the floor and the other to fit strategically on the heater baseboard. Come on. And (7), I know Nelligan is going for that raw brick style- but the thick, almost 2" corner cement patched-up job is unappealing. I'll happily say, their Le Labo guest soaps/ shampoo/conditioner are very nice touches. But, sadly, I'll branch out to other stays. read more

Before I took this trip to Montreal, I researched many hotels in the Old Montreal area and from the pics and reviews- this one stood out then all the rest. I loved how the hotel kept its a mix of old Montreal charm and its updated a new structure. I think it was the brick walls that really caught my attention. The staff was really friendly and let me know I was early and my room wasn't ready yet until 4pm so, they put my luggage in storage and I decided to go wandering around town. This hotel is so centrally located. The Notre-Dame Basillica is right up the street. Place D'Arms is in front of it. The old port is one block from the hotel. From there you can take a walk along the st.lawrence river, take the Ferris wheel, or zip line. There are so many restaurants for different tastes. I finally checked in and loved the room but when I looked out the window, I saw. View of the alley way and construction. Not what I was hoping for. The desk clerk and the manager of concierge switched up my room to another more modern room as an upgrade with no extra charges. Very kind of them, I wasn't mad that I didn't have the nostalgic brick wall features. In the lobby waiting area, they provide different beverages and some light snack while waiting in the area. Another great feature with this hotel is the terrace on the top floor. It's a great vibe with good music, good food, and great drinks. The staff at the rooftop bar are very attentive and friendly. Staying with Hotel Nelligan was a relaxing and amazing experience. The Superior Room with a king bed was so spacious and charming with its brick walls. The staff turned over the rooms twice daily, ensuring we always had a made bed, clean towels, and new soap/shampoo. The location was perfect- right by amazing restaurants and the port, and a couple-minute walk away from bars, close enough for convenience but far enough to not be noisy. The rooftop terrace overlooks the Notre Dame Basilica and always has catchy ambient music playing. Overall, I would recommend this hotel to anyone! read more

Do not stay at this hotel or any nearby until the construction project is completed on Rue Saint-Paul which starts at the door of this hotel and continues for 4-5 blocks plus the associated side streets. Nelligan's door is at the being of the project. Giant dump trucks crawl backwards starting as early as 7:15 am with thundering 130 decibel beeps every other second. Some have to drive in reverse for blocks - and not the annoying beeps of a delivery truck in reverse- this is industrial land moving equipment. This goes on all day- along with screaming cement and stone cutters and other massive industrial vehicles. I tried to take a 45 minute nap on day one- forget it. After a long fun night out in Montreal, what's not fun is being absolutely blasted with this racket jolting a person awake and having it last all damn day. We opened the windows Tuesday afternoon as it was so nice out- forget it. Closed them all immediately. For this price point, it's complete bs. There are plenty of like-hotels all over the city without these issues. Another problem- you can't reach the front of the hotel to remove luggage from a car without going the wrong way on a one-way street. Did we get a notice that the door of the hotel was completely inaccessible other than illegally driving up this road? Did we get even a crude hand-drawn map with two simple red arrows versus relying on our GPS which took us in circles after a 6.5 hour drive? Nope- had to call the hotel and got passed around until a very helpful gent told us what to do. That's pretty weak-we can't be the only people dumfounded on how to reach the hotel entrance. This is a very expensive place- and we wanted to celebrate landing a new job and splurge. I'd ask for real-time photos right and left of entrance along with the side streets at their corner to make sure this construction is absolutely completed. Maybe it's already done- as we were these 9/23/24-9/26/24 but man, it seriously sucked and cast a very negative pallor on what should have been a wonderful (and very expensive) getaway. read more

A suite costs $500/night US. I stayed in a room below their Terrace restaurant. The music boomed all night: impossible to sleep even with ear plugs. OTHER: bath towels like sandpaper (seriously) and TP single layer, Motel 6 quality. (NB: This is at $500/night US!). Their main floor restaurant has servers who only respond when flagged down eg coffee refills, empty plate removal, check backs after meal delivery, check delivery, etc. In short, the staff is simple not trained. A rather frustrating experience. I wrote a letter of explanation to the GM, the response was by a concierge. All typical word salad: "We're SO sorry for your experience." Etc. Etc. The company I work for had their sales conference the last two days in Montreal. I spent the last two nights at the Hôtel Nelligan in old Montreal. My room was huge! The bed was big and comfy! My room had a mini fridge, a safe in the closet, bathrobes and slippers, and a coffee maker. WIFI was complimentary and was speedy at times and barely existent at other times. I couldn't figure out how to turn the fireplace off so left it on the first night when I went to sleep. My room was cold so I turned the thermostat up to 85F and it didn't make a difference. The bathroom was especially cold. I was talking to some of my colleagues last night about how cold my room was and they said the fireplace also threw heat if you turned that part on. I mentioned it to someone at the front desk about my room being cold and the thermostat not working and she offered to send someone up to check it out. But I told her I would try to get the heat going in fireplace so should be fine. I figured out how to turn the fireplace off but not how to turn the heat on ... the blankets kept me warm. This morning it was chilly and I was determined to figure it out ... and I did. It didn't throw a lot of heat but it helped. The water pressure in the shower was strong. The bath tub was awesome and I did take advantage of it. My room faced the street and it was noisy early in the morning with garbage trucks stopping and picking things up. After a lot of research by hubby (yes, I made him do all the homework - it can be pretty exhausting checking on all the online reviews), we ended up selecting Hotel Nelligan for our first visit to Montreal. This was our stop for one night enroute to Quebec and then one night on return. It's a very quaint property, right in the old town and close to a lot of the historic "must see's". We were able to walk down to the waterfront one our first day and then spent a good 3-4 hours walking from the hotel to the art district, the little Chinatown area and then through the newer downtown shopping district areas pretty much discovering a lot of what Montreal town has to offer. There are a lot of great restaurants and shops close by. The room was beautiful, we upgraded to get a few of the St. Lawrence River and liked the ambiance and cozy setting. Upon our return, our room wasn't ready so they "upgraded" us to a suite which was bigger and had a fireplace but the view was right at the street in front of the hotel. I can see why some of my fellow yelpers said it was noisy. I preferred the orientation of our first room and would recommend paying for the upgrade to get the view with less noise. The bar/restaurant on the upper floor where we were is extremely popular and there were a lot of people up and down the elevators and in the hallway when it was open. Not a plus if want a more quiet atmosphere. We loved our stay and the staff was friendly and helpful. read more

I loved loved loved staying at the Nelligan! Came here to celebrate my anniversary with my fiance over this past weekend; arrived Friday night from NYC and left today, Monday noon. We like to consider ourselves low maintenance so our only true interactions with staff outside "bonjour"/"au revoir" when coming and going were checking in and checking out. And that's fine, dandy, and enough with us. Arriving on Friday night around midnight, our concierge greeter was very warm and welcoming and asked us what we had planned, if we needed help on what to do if we had nothing, and offered us assistance if anything! He asked if we had dinner and even apologized that it was so late as the only thing available for us to eat was pizza lol. Checking out at noon, a female assisted us and offered to hold our bags since our flight was for 5 pm and we still wanted to do some gallivanting. When we came back, they offered us their taxi services to the airport and tipped us off that it was rush hour and it might be more expensive to uber. But all is good, uber was still cheap. Still! 10/10 kind people. Only thing that was kind of weird was that our toiletries were only restocked 2/3 of the nights by housekeeping, and the second night we didn't get a new body gel, but it was alright, we used the bar soap lol. Also, I see that some people really love that brand of lotion/shampoo/conditioner.. I loved the smell but I'm dry everywhere! Haha hotel things. Word of advice: please be prepared to bring your own bottled water and your own toothpaste because we did not have any of our own on night 1. We're low maintenance and I'm just shy so we waited until Saturday morning to purchase our own lmao. When we came back from exploring around the evening time, I saw that there were two pieces of chocolate and two bottled waters on the desk but too late and we didn't want to be charged so we left those untouched. Now our room. It was lovely, pictures actually really don't do it justice. I was confused before; is the brick/stone the old Montreal aesthetic or are they trying to modernize or what? It has both feels. Even when I booked via expedia, I was only thinking of location and hot tub. I wasn't super in love with the look, but I was pleasantly surprised. Room 304, petite suite. Another yelper actually uploaded pictures of it, if it's the same room, but here are mine too. It was clean, the bed is spacious, and the TV has chromecast. Downside.. the wifi is probably straight trash. It works well, then it doesn't (noticed the mornings are a better time to browse social media and do anything internet related), the local channel on the TV is also lagging, and ugh! That I wish they could do better on. Anyway.. only thing wrong with our hotel room visually was the crack on the floor by the toilet but who cares! If you want quiet, this hotel might not be it, because nightlife over the weekend was pretty poppin' and you can hear the chatter below you. I'm not sure how to rate our experience. Location was great in the heart of Old Montreal, close to very good restaurants and galleries. If you have mobility issues, the major construction outside the hotel and down the street can make it difficult to access (Uber dropped us off a block away, no access at the door). Staff was friendly and we were "upgraded " to a large room that was mostly comfortable. Pillows were horribly HARD and I had neck issues after the first night. Toilet made a slamming noise they couldn't (didn't?) deal with and eventually clogged. Staff entered room even with a do not disturb notice on the door.... Weird stuff. When checking out, we found out we would have had free transport to train station, but no one told us in time to take advantage of it! It was very pricy to have issues not dealt with. A message from management would have been appropriate, too. read more

I wish I could give this hotel 10 stars! My friend and I were on a girls trip and stayed a few nights here. It was the perfect location, great shopping and places to eat all around! The staff were so nice, the hotel was quaint yet updated where it should be updated. Our room wasn't ready when we got there so we went to the rooftop bar and honestly forgot that we were just wasting time until our room was ready- we had fabulous wine and snacks and was the perfect sunny day! The room itself was amazing too- I always have to sleep with a noise machine or earplugs with sound being a light sleeper, but the fans in the bathroom were sufficient and I didn't hear a peep from the busy streets right outside the windows. We even slept with them open one night, the weather was amazing! The bed was perfect - I wish I would have looked to see what brand it was. I'm always amazed at how the magnificent stone buildings in Old Montreal with all their outward character can then be rehabilitated inside into gorgeous, well appointed, and up-to-date accommodations. The Nelligan certainly fits that criteria, especially with preserving a bit of the stone and brick walls in the rooms. Arriving by car on the cobblestone street the valet will take care of storing your car and have it available within ten minutes should you need it. And you probably won't with so much within walking distance. The staff are very friendly, welcoming, and of course, bi-lingual. The hotel has a dining area on the ground floor for breakfast through dinner, and a full bar. The breakfast dining area is within an impressive five-story atrium-like area with balcony areas looking down from above. There is also a rooftop dining and drinking terrace open for lunch and dinner hours. A warm and inviting sitting area off the lobby by the reception desk is perfect for relaxing or a casual conversation. Our room for two was very spacious with a comfortable king size bed, at least five king sized, down filled pillows of varying firmness, and independently controlled LED reading lights on each side of the bed. In addition to the flat screen TV, a radio with CD/DVD capabilities is also provided. USB connections are available in the room for charging electronic devices. The in-room service bar has wine, liquor, water, snacks, and even condoms. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. The bathroom has a whirlpool tub large enough for two and a separate, large, glass enclosed shower offering both hand controlled and overhead rain showering. Two terry-cotton robs are provided along with an iron, a hair drier, an adjustable, lighted make-up mirror, and appropriate body lotion, soap, shampoo, and beauty & shoe shine kits. Overall, this is a wonderful and luxurious place to stay while visiting Montreal. read more

We bought a package that included breakfast -- there were two breakfast options, and both were generously portioned and delicious. More like 4.8 rating but will give them a 5. Room was just as advertised and was very comfy. I slept well and I even enjoyed the little nespresso machine that came with the room. All amenities were there and staff was always nice and helpful from check in and out to restaurant recommendations. They ordered a taxi for me to take me to the airport which arrived on time and I had a smooth trip home. They did forget my 3:30am wake up call that I requested but I was awake early anyways so no harm done. Good location and a very cozy hotel. Excellent hotel in a special part of the city. My wife and I enjoyed our 5 nights there. Really nice charming rooms with rather generous spaces. Great shower( more later) nice bed and plenty of bits and bobs. Few minor issues with shower door , sink drain and housekeeping not replenishing mini bar. But. The friendly and extra helpful front of house were special. Nothing was trouble. Flowers for my wife, getting us into Damas ( try it) when I couldn't, recommending restaurants and booking them etc etc part of a long list. We would return. No question 4.5 stars. read more

I finally got to stay here because the dead zone after Christmas made this hotel finally affordable. The location can only be beat by the Saint Sulpice. I had heard that there is no gym in the St. Sulpice so Nelligan probably gives you the most full offering of a hotel in this class. Check-In had a surprisingly nice delight with a pair of free cocktail coupons at the bar - only that the cocktails are not for cocktails but for juice or house wine. The gym itself is in a small room with a TV that barely works but the equipment is in workable shape - lots of free weights and a universal machine, but the bench gets stuck easily when you're trying to adjust it. Someone should look into that... The room itself is great - nice and big with a nice touch from the brick. It got quite cold in the mornings even with the heat turned all the way up. The desk is big and heavy with lots of drawers -- only that I discovered that inside the drawers were minibar stuff, so if you touch it, $$$. Wifi was free but I had to unplug some of the lamps in order to find an outlet to charge my computer, not to mention all my other peripherals that needed charging. The bathroom was cool - the bathtub had jets, but my toilet never flushed properly. Also, there was a window right next to the toilet that faced into another building and housekeeping kept on re-raising the blinds for some unknown reason. The soaps and shampoos were from Gilbert & Soames and they were top notch - salon level shampoos, which is quite generous of them! Best smelling hotel soap ever. So all in all, I would say it's a nice hotel but at the same time it's a mixed bag - anything that is great came with a catch. read more

My husband and I attended a wedding at this lovely boutique hotel over the weekend and thought the entire experience was excellent....so though I usually stick to reviewing eateries we are adding one here even though we have not stayed at the hotel (but we were there for 9 hrs for the wedding and reception...) I should start by saying that a lot of the details we loved were hand picked by the bride and groom, who love this hotel and have excellent taste, and probably organized by the wedding planner in conjunction with the hotel, which we are guessing hosts a lot of weddings. That said, cocktails, canapes, and wedding food were all absolutely top notch. High quality ingredients, beautiful presentation, attention to flavor and detail - I would definitely go back just to eat! Service was awesome. Not only were the servers efficient, professional and attentive, but they had personality and actually made you feel like they were taking special care of you, and you alone. Our table of 8 people was served by guy named Julio who kept our drinks filled, our table cleared and our questions answered. Julio is the man! The decor of the ballroom felt like a roaring 20's speakeasy - great vibe, romantic and classy; the bar (where we had cocktails before and after the ceremony but before moving to the ballroom) was clean and modern; the bathrooms all nicely appointed and clean, and in general, the whole hotel has a really nice feel. Really we felt transported and not at all like we were 'just in a hotel'. We have 3 small criticisms but they do not take away from our rating: 1. Wedding favors included cigars, but the front desk had no cigar cutters... 2. Our table was close to the doorway were you entered off the hall, which was also close to a side exit door that led to the outside, so every time guests would exit to smoke cigars, a flood of cold air rushed in to the ballroom. We didn't realize the source of the cold air til the end of the night...and didn't complain - but take note if you are seated in a similar spot... 3. The bride and groom splurged on open bar for the entire event - but the bar package did not include the one alcohol I prefer: tequila. I talked to the bartenders about this and learned it was a deliberate omission based on past bad experiences with guests causing damage to the hotel after excessive tequila shots... I'm sure planning an event here would be easy as it definitely appeared to be a well-oiled machine, but it can't be cheap ... Then again, you get what you pay for and I would say it felt worth every penny. And I was just a guest! read more

We came here for their Cabane a Sucre on the rooftop terrace. The food was really good, considering at these things it can be really hit and miss, but they got it perfect. The way the staff was dressed and the live music sets a really cool atmosphere for the tourist visiting Montreal looking for a little taste of a Quebec Cabane a Sucre. Even for a local Montrealer it was nice, and it gave me a to see what the terrace looks like for the summer months, when I expect it to be overflowing with people. After reading the reviews on hotels in Montreal, we chose Hotel Nelligan for our 3 night stay. From my pre trip communication with Maude at the concierge desk and all through our trip, it is her excellent recommendations that made this hotel and our trip so amazing. She exemplifies what a concierge position is all about and greets you with a warm and wonderful smile each and every time you see her! The hotel is situated on rue St Paul and is perfectly located near Notre Dame and in the center of Old Montreal. The metro is a very short walk and offers great access to the entire city. The lobby is beautiful as was the king superior that my wife and I stayed in. Brick walls surround the hotel providing a very old world European feel. Cocktails in the lounge area is a wonderful way to start your evening before venturing out to one if Montreals many wonderful restaurants. I can't say enough about the incredible staff here and the comfort of this world class hotel. I can not wait to return! read more

This was a super cool hotel very historic feel very interesting interior with a very historic feel and taste to it. The real beauty of this location is the rooftop bar which oversees oldetown the area and on a beautiful night is absolutely incredible place to spend time having a cocktail and visiting with friends. Nice hotel, very historic. Rooms clean and tidy. This hotel is in a great spot close to Notre Dame. Both nights were sleepless because of the street noise with loud partying. Second night the last of the noise was at 2:30am. Next morning front desk said they had finally called police because all the guests were complaining. I don't think there is much the hotel can do to stop the noise but I will choose a different location next time. read more

Rooms are nice but breakfast took over an hour to arrive (continental breakfast). Worst feature is ghastly loud blaring "music" (just LOUD noise) from the roof deck, which ruins the experience. Very stressful and spoils the view. There is similar noise at breakfast. Hard to fathom why management doesn't fix this - everyone around us was complaining. read more

Sexy, stylish- exposed brick, leather... Best location in old Montreal. Very friendly staff. Absolutely heavenly, sumptuous bedding and pillows. Delicious espresso and coffee in the lobby upon waking- or use the nespresso machine in your room. We have recently stayed here- and at a nearby hotel, the Hotel St Sulpice, on the same visit to this amazing city. (And previousy stayed here on a visit for Jazz Festival a couple of summers ago.) Each has their positives- but you cannot go wrong with the Hotel Nelligan. Did I mention how comfortable the beds are? The only comment from me- there should be a couple of bottles of water in the room each day. This they did at the St Sulpice, and little touches like that make a big difference. When the U.S. Dollar outweighs the CAD, it means extra shopping and better than average hotels for this American traveler. Hotel Nelligan was a lovely home away from home for three nights while visiting Montreal. Location, location, location. Two blocks from the river and a short walk to the Cathedral, plus close to cafes and restaurants. It's ideal for a first time visitor. Just like everyone else in the city, staff spoke perfect English and even humored my sad attempts to parler Francais. Guests get a free drink at the hotel bar- and though we didn't use our vouchers, it was a nice touch upon check in. Rooms were pretty large and king bed super comfy, which explained why I was able to sleep in until almost 11 am. Rarely happens, even on vacation. Our room had an interior view, which stayed extra dark. Again, perfect conditions for those who want an extra hour or two of snooze time. Kudos to the giant tub in the bathroom, which was put to use on the last evening. Yes, there was TV in the room. Most of the channels were French or sports, but we made do with TLC and French Simpsons. Frankly, it's more fun to watch certain shows in another language. Case and point? Family Feud. Three nights averaged out to $600, which was pretty reasonable given the proximity to local attractions and level of service. A nice hotel for sure. read more

The Hotel Nelligan is right in the heart of Old Montreal, with old world charm and service. The 6 story building is brick with a nice facade, and the interior has been remodeled with washed brick and wood accents. The rooms are decent sized and furnished handsomely with understated luxury. There is a small bar and dining, and most room rates come with breakfast included. You'll pay about $175 to $250 depending on room and season. You can step outside and walk the quaint narrow streets with their shops, bistros and drinking establishments. read more
