Saw this on the way to Ocala and decided this would be my lunch on the way back to Orlando. The chopped pork was delicious with just the right amount of smoky flavor and very tender. My husband is the BBQ fan, I typically just tolerate it. However, the chopped brisket, Mac and cheese and cole slaw was SO good! I wasn't able to eat all my food! Best bbq in the area. No doubt a local secret. The staff was super friendly and food arrived hot and quick. The brisket was excellent, very tender. I've had bbq in well known places around the United States and this place is a descent competitor. I went on a Saturday and a little disappointed to see they were not too busy while the chain restaurants were. Keep the chains, I prefer the local restaurants where the food is better. I came back to see if anything changed since my last review last year. We bought 3 lunches. Ribs tasted good and the sizes on my lunch were fine. Unfortunately the second and third lunch meals the ribs were smaller ( they still love to slip in the smaller ribs, I even mentioned that I was reviewing them, go figure )! The prices went up which was no surprise but they should reprint the menus because the dinner and lunch are showing the old prices. The sides are still tasty ( collard greens and black eyed peas, Mac and cheese, cinnamon apple, baked beans and corn. They weren't as much liquid! Cornbread always good but they should level up the pan before they cook it ( some pieces are smaller and hard and flat. The sweet potato pie was delicious! Went here yesterday for the first time. I'm a brisket snob, and this is the best brisket I've had. Very moist and very tasty. Hubby had the chopped pork and he loved it. Sides of green beans, baked beans, and fries were great. Neither of us is a big fan of cornbread, but we both ate every bite of the generous complementary piece that came with our meals. The food portions were very generous. Wait staff were pleasant and attentive. Smoke master even stopped by our table to make sure everything was good. You could tell he was proud of his food. Pretty good, but not the best I've had in Florida. The ribs were well cooked so they fell off the bone but still had some chew to them. The brisket was unfortunately a little dry, and I don't like slathering on heaps of sauce for moisture because that takes away from the smokey meaty flavor. On the other hand, the sliced pork was very moist and cooked perfectly. The collards were a bit lacking in flavor, but the green beans were on point. And the onion rings are HUGE and cooked right so the onion doesn't slide out of the batter after one bite. Also big thumbs up on the fried okra for not being overly seasoned or have a batter that slips off. Tea was also delicious and the waitress was friendly and helpful. My wife and I went out with friends yesterday evening and thought we would try some place new. Based on the reviews that I read in Yelp! we went to, "I Barbeque Express" on 27/441 in Fruitland Park. In full disclosure, we are big fans of the, "Oakwood Express" in Wildwood. We were seated at 6:30 PM, Saturday and the place was somewhat busy. Our server was a very nice gal by the name of Brandy and she took our orders for drinks shortly after we were seated. My reason for choosing to go to this place was the reviews of their beef brisket and what looked like great fried green tomatoes. First, service was very slow taking almost 25 minutes from the time we gave Brandy our order to the time we were served. Each of us ordered the 2-meat combo dinner plates. All of the online menus for this restaurant have never had their pricing updated so Yelp! lists this dinner as $13.99 while other sites list it as $15.99. Last evening the cost was $21.99. That would have been ok but what we were finally served was 2 ribs, 2 slices of beef brisket, one small cole slaw, one piece of corn bread and our second side was fried green tomatoes (which the menu listed as $1.50 upcharge but was charged was $2.00). As I mentioned earlier, I am a fan of the Oakwood Express and their ribs are lean baby back ribs served somewhat wet with bbq sauce on them. I knew that the ribs at, "I Barbeque Express" were center cut pork ribs and they would be different. The 2 ribs I got although tasty were very fatty, the 2 slices of brisket were dry, I suspect due to reheating, and the fried green tomatoes had so much breading on them you couldn't really taste that tanginess associated with green tomatoes. I rate this restaurant as a 2 primarily due to Brandy our waitress and how nice and attentive she was during the course of our meal. Please be aware that there is also a 3.95% charge for use of a credit card. read more
