I'm not one to ever leave reviews but I had to come on here with my personal experience. I'll be honest--I wasn't initially on board with homeschooling, and it was hard for me to wrap my brain around taking this path. But I am SO thankful we did. Our son has gained so much confidence, and it has been amazing to watch his personal growth. Even more importantly, his health has improved in his time here. He was diagnosed with a rare form of childhood epilepsy, and in the short time he has been at I Can Academy, we have seen his seizure activity cut in half. I believe this is due to a few factors including the positive environment and less stress. We are incredibly grateful for the support, understanding, and positive environment he has received. The teachers are amazing. A few of them are teachers my children have had in the past which made for an easy transition for my son. I hope our experience helps another mom who may be on the fence about homeschooling, just like I was, because for our family, the benefits have by far outweighed any of the negative ideas I had in my head. read more

We registered our 5-year-old daughter for a reading class when she expressed interest in learning how to read, and we couldn't be happier with the experience. The office staff was so warm and welcoming, and our daughter loved picking out her supplies to create her own I Can Academy bag. Her teacher was incredibly kind and created such a positive, engaging learning atmosphere. During the class, I even heard my daughter shout, "I can read!" When it ended, she was smiling and excited to bring home new flash cards to practice blending sounds. A few days later, she had an assessment at a private school for kindergarten, which included sounding out letters and blending them. Hello, This is a fellow 7th grader at I Can Academy. I have to say, the staff are extremely nice and caring! Most of them are parents, so they have proper experience with this kind of stuff. The best part about the staff is that they don't just focus on teaching, they focus on YOU. The teachers have less students which means they can focus on students individually. Other schools have teachers which focus on the class as a student body. The teachers want to know YOU and what YOU need help on and what YOU like. It may be smaller than your average school, but makes up for it for the indivual care the teachers put into the students. It's a great cross between homeschool and school, where you have less stress and all the kids are chill and you get all the knowledge you need. I would give ICA 10 stars if I could, highly recommend!! I've been a homeschooling mama for the past 5 years, with two rambunctious boys, now in 4th and 6th grade. It's our second semester at ICA focusing on math and language arts, and I am truly blown away by the progress that's been made! Not only are my sons having fun, gaining skills in a friendly environment among their peers, they are standing taller everyday ready to tackle their next lesson with me. My youngest used to break down in tears when writing, it became torture for both of us, and I was feeling very defeated. After just a couple months of going 2 days a week for 1 hour (consistency is key), he now writes on his OWN at home and is proud to show me what he has written! My favorite is getting to listen to him present his writing in class during 'authors chair!' I am one grateful mama with one happy, confident writer! Who knew? Hearing my oldest talk about all the FUN he has in math 2 days a week, is music to my ears. He has always loved math, but as he was getting older, I was noticing gaps in his skills from the curriculum we had been using. I switched curriculum, but needed help filling in all those gaps while at the same time, keeping up with his grade level standards. It was becoming overwhelming, he felt lost with some of the grade level material, and his once favorite subject, started chipping away his confidence, which was heartbreaking to watch. Now, after consistently going, I am so grateful ICA has been able to reinforce past concepts so he can do his best now with grade level curriculum! He is getting caught up and loving math again. Yay! It all started with setting up a free evaluation online that worked with my schedule, where I got to tour the beautiful space and see how ICA could help my boys GROW. If you are in the market for a tutoring service that really cares for your child as whole, and improvement over a period of time in ELA and math? This is a GEM of a place!! The biggest selling point is that Shaina and her team are listening and responding appropriately to each child, and engaging them to learn. My son had tried other services where it is just repetition of busy work and sheets, but it is less about the 1:1 connection. Most of the time as parents, we realize our kids need help outside of us. Sometimes they need a different perspective to explain the concept to them. I Can Academy does such a great job here, and my son enjoys coming every week. The atmosphere is welcoming, and the tutors are encouraging. Last year, my son has really struggled with math fluency and reading comprehension. Over the course of the last 6 months, I have seen his confidence build. He went from getting a 1-2 out of 5 in reading comprehension to a 4-5 out of 5, and retraining what he read. Where do I begin? My son LOVES I Can Academy. We are a homeschool family that is utilizing Cabrillo Academy funds. ICA helps enrich our at-home curriculum in a very intimate classroom setting, and he is thriving there! I have Kinder, 3rd and 5th grade homeschoolers that all attend I Can Academy. Our journey to find them simply started with me (mom) realizing that teaching the full spectrum of language arts passed learning how to read was not something I enjoyed and wanted to find a fun way for my 3rd and 5th graders to learn and enjoy. Enter Shaina and her team at I Can Academy. My older 2 came in for an assessment to see where they were at on their learning journey and we signed up to start classes the next week. From day 1, I was hearing things like "mom, we learned everything for math and language arts in the most fun way possible". By week 3 my reluctant writers were happily writing (and learning grammar, spelling, etc without even realizing it)! Every morning when they wake up they ask if it's I Can day! My older 2 made it sound so fun that my kindergartener asked if she can go. So now all 3 look forward to I Can day. They have all grown immensely in both language arts and math skills and have started forming friendships with the other children in their groups. We have even started walking to the park nearby after class for lunch and playtime with our new friends. All 3 of my kids want to return next year both for the friends and their teachers. Where do you start when something has made such a profound impact in your child's life? This year has been a difficult year for my 6th grade daughter concerning math. Worse still, as a parent you realize that the methods taught to you decades ago just don't transcribe over all that well. What we learned as seniors in 1990 they are mastering in late elementary grades. Struggling as a parent trying to teach an already confused child is as disheartening for you as it is for the child. Oh I was able to come up with the correct answer, but only after trial and error at failing at it with incorrect answers. All the while your child is looking at you, they're not saying it but they know you are dog paddling in the deep end of the pool and your arms are so very tired. That was when her teacher referred us to "I Can Academy", in Mission Viejo. Located just a short walk away from Mission Viejo Mall, this place has been both of our saviors. Employing teachers that are actively teaching currently in the local district or have decades of experience, they have guided my daughter to first comprehending the math material (in her case) to now being able to confidently take tests in class and scoring high marks. Just 3 short months ago my daughter would cry with the stress level when she would come home, not fully understanding the material being taught. This is a common occurrence these days with over attended schools, class sizes that were unheard of in our time and a teacher that can only provide so much attention individually when the class is 30+ kids strong, all with differing needs to learn. Don't get me wrong, our teacher at the school is phenomenal. It's just that our daughter needs more indepth teaching with skills that I truthfully don't possess. Now she is in a tutoring class that has 3 children in it, that's 3 kids that actually want to learn, fully dialed in to the instructor and the course work in a private and quiet room with whiteboards, books and other learning materials.. This was our biggest deciding factor when it came to choosing a tutor. Some may be one on one that you find, but they are teaching at a table in the library. Full of sounds and distractions that hamper the lesson at every turn. We know this because we went through this with our oldest daughter. You can also try one of the cookie cutter tutoring schools out there. They are 10+ kids in the class and they are following a structured plan that was designed nationally. I'm sure that for a select group of kids this might work, but I wasn't willing to subscribe to what I feel is again an overloaded group (10 kids for an hour will not yield personalized results) when I feel that a more private approach, with a lower kid to teacher ratio would work better. How right I was, from the initial meeting we realized that Shaina and her teachers were the tailored team that would give our daughter the best possible outcome. Her tutor is a teacher that she knows at her school, teaching exactly what was needed in a way that a normal school would struggle to attain in this day and age. We just crested 10 one hour sessions and the impact is seen not only in test scores that have risen steadily, but in my child's demeanor. Gone is the stress, the tears, the look of terror on her face the morning of the test. She exudes a confidence of someone that not only grasps the lesson, but one that has found joy in the learning process. What more can you ask for from your child/student. The desire to learn more because the fundamentals are no longer floating in the ether, always just out of reach because the class has to move on to the next subject, they have become attainable. I couldn't recommend I Can Academy enough and we as a family are in debt to them for this gift of learning. read more

I am so excited that I Can Academy is open in Mission Viejo. I had the pleasure of working with the owner Shaina for 5 years at a full-inclusion charter school in Los Angeles. She was the lead kindergarten teacher and her role went way beyond that. I can't say enough great things about I Can Academy! I was lucky enough to have both of our kids join in August, and we plan on having them continue on for years to come.
