Concerning Experience at Imperial Beach Grocery Outlet - Disability and Racist Owner Awareness…read moreNeeded I want to share an experience my family had at the Imperial Beach Grocery Outlet (Store #0288) so other families -- especially those with disabilities -- are aware. On February 3, 2026, during checkout, the cashier (David) reprimanded my minor autistic daughter directly, telling her that the store headband she was wearing "did not belong there" after she briefly set it on the candy rack. I was standing right in front of him, using a walking cane, with our disability‑related support animal beside us. Our disability needs were clearly visible, yet he chose to address my child sharply instead of speaking to me. I asked for the manager and insisted on an apology, which he eventually gave. Unfortunately, while we were still in the store managing our paid groceries without assistance, the manager, the same cashier, and a nearby customer openly mocked the situation at the manager's register. When I raised this, the manager dismissed it, saying she had "no control over customers." Families with disabilities deserve respect, patience, and professionalism -- not reprimands directed at children or mocking behavior from staff and customers. I did receive a brief response from the franchise owners, but it did not address the specific concerns or the seriousness of what occurred. I hope this store takes disability awareness and customer treatment seriously moving forward. Complaint filed with BBB. Update: Complaint filed with Department of Justice . I understand this is from the massive theft problem. However when you ring the bell to get help, you're waiting 15+ minutes for an employee with a negative attitude to help you. The store manager can work to make sure someone is readily stationed to help with a positive attitude. Seems like a simple solution that this store manager unfortunately refuses to make happen. I agree with the multiple reviews mentioning a lack of carts. Again, this is a store management issue. No one is assigning their team to collect carts from the parking lot. Employees at this store sadly just aren't trained and don't know where things are or how to offer good customer service. I'd imagine that's because the expectations aren't getting laid out by management. The Walmart in the same shopping center actually offers a far superior shopping experience. The threat prevention at Walmart does not feel as invasive, and carts are always available there. Vons is obviously capable of running successful stores given its nationwide footprint. This location specifically seems to not care about our community in San Diego and has checked out of even trying to offer a positive grocery shopping experience. I encourage all of you to try Sun Coast Market in Imperial Beach. It's a family owned business who actually values their customers

I wasn't sure we could find a water store that would compare and I was delighted to find Aunt Ellen's Water. They sell both purified and alkaline water. Others have reviewed and said that the water has a "taste," I have never experienced that. Christopher is a ray of sunshine!! Every time I go in I get so much more than just water. He is a healer and so knowledgeable about spirituality and alternative treatments. I usually get alkaline water so I always make it a point to slow down, sit and have a chat with him....I always feel so much better after leaving the store. In addition to water, the store carries all kinds of interesting books, Himalayan Salt Lamps and wellness supplements. This little shop is a treasure in the area, support local and check it out!!

I just moved to imperial beach 3 weeks ago and came across this store thru a referral from a friend. They have a big selection of Craft beer which i was pleased to see since i love my craft beer. Also talked to the owner Danny about getting a beer that i'm used to from the east coast and he had it in for me within 3 days. Nice and clean establishment, great selection of liquor and beer. Will be coming here for my beer from now on. read more

However, today I walked there to get one single Smirnoff & a white guy at the front refused to sell it to me because he "couldn't read my ID" his own words. It says on there " 08 FEB 2005" This man thought that 08 meant August so I wasn't old enough to purchase it. I explained several times that I was born on the 8th of February but he simply couldn't comprehend how to read the order of it & just laughed. This annoyed me so much because this is literally a federal state ID that clearly says my information & shows a photo of me. It's concerning that some of the staff doesn't know how to read ID's & they probably should NOT be working there if they don't know how to tell if one is real or how to read the date of birth on it. I regret not asking what days a manager is there so I could personally complain to them because this guy made it seem like I was using a fake when I am literally of age. I am also a small person so I don't know if he was laughing at me because I don't look like someone that could buy alcohol ? I'm a grown ass woman so that really pissed me off. I went to the store next door to purchase the liquor instead & got it with no problem. That guy is gonna make yall lose business cause he's slow & an absolute idiot.

It's a little known secret that Imperial Beach houses two liquor stores that easily send BevMo running for the cellar. The first being South Bay Drug and Liquor, an easy find as it's placed right off Palm Avenue where you can find a wide selection of local micros and limited edition domestic runs. The second is Ashur Liquor, a little more hidden but what South Bay Drug is to locals, Ashur is to the Euro/Belgian variety. Nestled behind a Carls Jr. on the South side of Palm Ave, Ashur carries it's share of glassware, T-shirts, the above mentioned Belgiums, Trappists, and they even sport their own humidor chock full of cigars. From Micro to Macro brews you'll be sure to find it at Ashur (or SBD). Just don't come in hoping to ask for advice, the guys behind the counter seem to better educated in the realm of spirits than in beer. None the less, you can't help but appreciate the full wall fridge + 2nd refrigerated aisle of craft bombers and an additional corner for macros that Ashur dedicates to their beer loving patrons.
