I've been going to IBX Fitness for about two years now, and it's easily one of the best decisions I've made for my health and well-being. What I love most about the workouts is how adaptable they are--you can control the intensity simply by choosing the weights that work for you. So while everyone is following the same structure, each person can challenge themselves at their own level, which makes it approachable for all fitness backgrounds. I'm in my mid-40s and have spent my whole career sitting at a desk. For years, I struggled with lower back pain and was regularly seeing a chiropractor. But since building strength through the IBX workouts, my back pain has almost completely gone away. I still go in for the occasional chiro session for maintenance, but I rely on it less and less, which is huge. I haven't noticed any weight loss--if anything, I've gained weight--but I'm pretty sure that's all muscle, because I certainly don't look heavier. I feel stronger, more stable, and more energized overall. The instructors are all fantastic--motivating, knowledgeable, and genuinely good people. I was sad when one of my favorite coaches moved on to pursue something else, but I totally respect that, and thankfully, the rest of the team is just as great. I'm not a particularly social person, so I tend to keep to myself, but the community at IBX is welcoming and friendly. I really wanted to like IBX fitness. I went for a solid 10 months to classes. I thought their classes were fine, they weren't amazing but they got the job done. What struck me immediately about this gym was how anti-social everyone was. Even though we were in a small class with a lot of the same people, nobody really talked to each other or even said hello. I tried to make an effort every time to at least say hi to one person, but it was always awkward. I thought maybe if I just kept coming things would change. They never did. I finally brought this up to the coaches after a few months and offered some possible suggestions of how to foster some more connection, but nothing changed. I don't need my gymmates to be my best friends, but it's just more fun when people know each other or just even say "hi" or "good job" at the end of a class. The gym hosts social functions occasionally but being a busy mom I never had the luxury of attending these (though it didn't seem to matter during class as people still didn't talk). There were other frustrating things about the studio as well, such as how difficult it was to book a class. The owners were so focused on increasing their membership that classes filled up 2 weeks in advance, and unless you didn't work and could go to a class at any time during the day, it was impossible to get in otherwise. In addition, they have extremely strict policies about being on time, (which I totally appreciate as a on-time type of person), but things happen, and sometimes even I might be a couple minutes late. If you are even a couple minutes late, they don't let you into class. As a busy full-time working mom of 2 kids, I just found these aspects to be really frustrating, as I needed some sort of flexibility. Overall, it always felt like they were more concerned about marketing and getting new members than they were about their actual members' experience. Not once were we offered any kind of way to give feedback anonymously, such as a survey (aside from adding new class times). There was no way I could provide feedback aside from going to the coaches directly. I've been a member of several other gyms and never felt this way before. They really get me moving, and I love it! I joined IBX two years ago attend 8 classes a month, roughly two per week. Classes are equal parts Iron Flow, strength training, and cardio movement, and the workouts are fun, challenging, build muscle, and get the heart rate up! The coaches pay attention, get to know an individuals goals, and give encouragement without pressure. They help me to stay motivated and intentional, which helps me reconnect with my body and getting out of my head. Even though it's a group class, you have your own little section with painted boundaries so you don't have that stress that often comes with group classes of worrying that won't have enough room or that you'll run into the person next to you. Ian and Sisi will always show you a modification if a movement is uncomfortable for you. Somehow the classes go really fast, which I appreciate. Everyone is there to get stronger- no one is looking around to check out the other people in the class, so there is no competitive vibe. You can adjust the weights to whatever is comfortable for you. Have you ever signed up for a group fitness class that made you actually miss it when you can't attend due to other obligations? I'm pleased to say working out is no longer a chore, and that is thanks to IBX! I have been attending IBX for almost 6 months, 3 times a week to build strength and help manage my stress with exercise. It is so conveniently located on San Pablo street with plenty of parking. Inside, the equipment --comprising of weights (called "torpedoes", you'll never look at dumbbells the same again), mats, resistance bands, jump ropes, and exercise boxes -- is easily accessible, clean, and offers a range for all strength levels. I never have to think about what my workout is going to be because IBX changes the themes and movements each week. No "Upper body Wednesdays" or "Lower body Fridays", you can still get a well-rounded and heart-pumping workout even if you miss a day. The 50 mins of class go by quickly, and there is a routine flow: warm up, Iron Flow, strength training, cardio, and cooldown / stretching. The other members are friendly and thanks to the small class size (up to 16 people), the coaches are able to give you some personal training tips too like form corrections and helping you choose weights. I think the membership price is fair and competitive to other gyms, plus it's cheaper than therapy! And you're supporting a locally-owned small business! Win-win! IBX Fitness is a great gym for strength training. I like the fact that a wide variety of people go there - men, women, and all age ranges and fitness levels so no one need feel out of place. I have been impressed with all the trainers they have had. The main trainer, Sisi, is very good about watching people and suggesting exercise modifications as needed for their particular physical condition - in my case the knees. We found IBX during Covid and it's been a breath of fresh air (pun intended). It forces me to get out of the house and get the heart rate going. I think the best part of IBX is the community and the culture. You walk in and all the instructors are super friendly yet knowledgable about physical fitness. Your peers also come from all walks of life and so you can be your authentic self when working out. You want to use the 20lb weight? go ahead. no one is judging you. that's the best part. I'm having a great experience working out at IBX. I've gained a lot of strength quickly. Joining was the best thing I did for myself this year. I had never lifted weights before but felt it was time I did. The instructors are super friendly and great at explaining things. I like the free weights and the class atmosphere. I joined IBX in Feb 2022 taking 8 classes a month and, not too much after, upgraded to 12 classes a month. I have enjoyed every single one of the 275 classes I've taken to date initially with Ian, mostly with Evee and most recently with Sisi. When I first joined I was recovering from diastasis recti. Over the years I have built strength and confidence. In July 2022 I also started my running journey and, very much with the help of IBX's strength training, I have completed 3 half marathon races. This place is fantastic!!! I decided to try them out since they are local and easily accessible from Berkeley/Albany/ElCerrito/Kensington. I am 45+ and was a little apprehensive to join a place like this.....until I did!!! The workouts are easily modified on days I might be feeling my age. Otherwise, I saw my strength, agility, core, body shape all improve significantly. The staff are really amazing and super friendly. Class sizes are smaller so they pay attention to everyone and really guide members through the excercises. There is also a wonderful, diverse mix of members of all ages and backgrounds. Love that!! I highly recommend IBX! I've been going regularly for about a year now, and it's something I look forward to in my day. The workouts are effective -- I feel challenged and am getting stronger and more fit. The class size is perfect -- it's not overwhelmingly big and so you get the individual attention necessary to make sure you are doing the workouts correctly. And the overall atmosphere is very warm and welcoming -- the coaches are really nice and they put on events outside the regular workout classes to build community among the members and the larger community. I also want to highlight how the IBX coaches helped me remain active during my pregnancy. They were very accommodating, providing me with pregnancy-safe workouts during class and tips/advice on what to do outside of class to maintain a healthy pregnancy. Each class I was provided with modifications that were appropriate for whatever stage of pregnancy I was in, and I appreciated the time they spent in educating themselves and creating individual workouts for me. Overall, I'm so glad I continued working out at IBX throughout my pregnancy (and that they were so helpful about it!) -- it resulted in me having a healthier pregnancy, quicker labor and delivery, and easier postpartum recovery. I've tried multiple gyms in the area but this is the only one that I've been consistent with. I even got my partner to join when I told him "it's not like the other gyms!" haha. The coaches are genuine and knowledgable, and the workouts are great. You can scale things up or down depending on your day. I love IBX for the great workouts, small classes, and welcoming atmosphere. I was not in great shape and have been thinking for years that any day now I'd start an exercise routine, but never found the right time or program. I knew I do best with group fitness classes, but have been intimidated in the past by feeling like the new kid in class when everyone else already knows what they're doing. IBX gives tons of guidance and makes me feel so comfortable, especially since the whole studio is somewhat new, and classes are so small (and bonus that the workout spaces are marked out on the floor so you have a designated spot and don't risk someone deciding to be all up in your bubble). If you want a great workout with a fun-loving community but none of the the hassles that come with big box gyms, then this is the spot for you. The HIIT workouts kick your butt without taking forever, and you feel like a rockstar for days afterwards. Plus, every week you get to learn new fitness subjects...barbell work, proper form, workout structuring, the list goes on.
