Review Visit: September 29th, 2013 "Do you want to go to The Ice Cream Shack?" "Sure! Which one?" "THE Ice Cream Shack." "Right, but which one? Peoria has a ton of them." "It's a place called THE ICE CREAM SHACK." "Ohhhhhh..." I imagine that is a common conversation among people when they are talking about coming here. I know there was some slight confusion between my cousin and I when we made plans to check this place out. After spending the afternoon hiking at Forest Park Nature Center with my friend Tim and my cousin's family, we needed some sugary treats to recharge our batteries. The kids were vocally loud in their agreement on getting ice cream. So, we hopped in our cars and headed over. I had been by this area quite a few times and never realized there was an ice cream place. The building itself is a bit recessed from the road and doesn't really have an outlandish look that some ice cream shacks have. So, you can end up driving by without noticing it (as I have). It was a slow when we pulled up so there was plenty of parking for our two vehicles. We hopped out and walked on up to the window to figure out what we wanted. Luckily this place doesn't have a million different options to pick from like a lot of places. Their menu is simplistic and focused on ice cream with a small selection of non-frozen desserts to pick from. On this day, I snagged a Peanut Butter Cup-flavored wizard. As we waited for our snacks, I eagerly anticipated getting a peanut butter cup-themed wizard staff and hat to go with my delectable. When they called my name, I sprinted up to the window to get my goodies. What they gave me was just the wizard that I ordered and no garments or anything else. Dream crushed. I'm kidding. We all got our orders in a fairly quick time as there weren't many people there. I don't recall what everyone else got but we took some funny photos while scarfing down our sugary dairy products. Everyone seemed to enjoy what they ordered and after goofing around a bit more, we parted ways. Not only did the kids get to be kids jacked up on ice cream and hiking, us adults got to be kids at heart while being goof balls loaded up on sugar. read more

I don't understand for the life of me why a business can't accept credit cards. It's 2025 not 1910, are the owners that cheap? It's not like their prices are low enough to justify it. They actually cost more than Dairy Queen. Once I saw that and there prices I just turned around. I just can't support a business that can't support itself read more

Great ice cream! I was looking for a replacement for Sonic's Blast when I stumbled upon this little gem. The ice cream is even better here and they have 10x as many selections as other places. The ice cream is real and so are the toppings. I got a peanut butter cup wizard in a med and it was huge! Great out door sitting for that all American ambiance. Definitely, takes one back to that small home town burger and ice cream joint feel. The staff was friendly and fast. I will be back. read more

The ice cream shack is one of my favorite places in Peoria because they are the only ones that have a puppy chow wizard. It's very unique and super tasty. Prices are very fair and portion sizes are huge. I wish they had a smaller size for the wizard. You can only eat outside and you order at the counter outside. There is plenty of seating. read more

Food is always good, but very pricey now....over $6 for 2 small cones......almost $20 to take 2 small children and 2 adults for a treat!

This place was ok. It tastes like ice cream mix from a bag. Not our favorite. They have lots of mix in flavors. My husband said most of his were in the bottom of the cup though. My daughter got a fruit punch slush and it's like they doubled the amount of flavoring because it was super strong. She didn't drink it. We definitely wouldn't go out of our way to go back. They do have a nice little area to sit in with shade outside. read more

Ice Cream Shack is a favorite ice cream spot that my sorority and I like to go to. It is located in a rougher part of Peoria, but do not let that stop you from going! They have "wizards" which is the DQ equivalent of a blizzard. They have many different ingredients that you can put in. You can also substitute vanilla ice cream for another like chocolate or lemon. They also have sundaes, cones, and other items to eat such as hot dogs and hot sandwiches. The service is pretty fast considering the times when 50 girls show up and order. The wait staff is very friendly and helpful to everyone. One of my favorites there is the puppy chow wizard! It has bits and pieces of puppy chow swirled into vanilla ice cream. They have about 6 stone tables that you can sit at which gives Ice Cream Shack a nice ambience. There is also a small courtyard in the parking lot with some tables that you can sit at. Scurry on over to the Shack and you won't be disappointed. read more

After our long drive out from Dover, NH a few day prior to Peoria to visit the future in-laws for the first time Fiancé wanted to show me all the places he misses being away from home. Since he grew up a few block down the road when he was younger he wanted to come back and visit what he affectionately called just "The Shack!" My first impression were this place is a converted crack house! They serve ice cream out of that!? The "Shack" is in a pretty sketchy neighborhood. Man, Mid-West ghetto is a whole other ballpark isn't it! DAMN! After having to leave to get cash and coming back we ordered food first. I tried the "Tenderloin" which is region classic, I soon would learn. EVERY restaurant touted to have the "BEST." which was surprisingly delish! Even if the fiancé and his sister said they were "premade, frozen shit." After eating we ate I was growing increasingly excited thinking of ice cream, but I guess they serve cold creamy concoctions. I ordered a bubble gum wizard that I think had mint mixed in and tasted as if were medicine. I didn't finish. Truthfully my tummy got a bit upset. Fiancé and his sis gobbled theirs down and we hung out a bit just talking. For a split second thought staff was going to come out and jump a girl that was causing trouble. The Fiancé said it had changed a bit since he was last here and the ice cream may have been different. I would be more inclined to give it another shot if my tummy would permit. read more

Not a whole lot of flash or appeal to this place, but they have just about any sort of topping you can think of for cones, "Wizards" (their version of Blizzards" sundaes, splits, shakes. You name it, they probably got it. They've also got awesome chili dogs and fries. Typical state fair style dogs. Open seasonally, like 10:30-10:30 or something like that. read more

As someone who prefers supporting local businesses over chains, The Ice Cream Shack is a good alternative to Dairy Queen. I had a banana soft serve + Reese's PB Cup "blizzard", which was plenty tasty. Just note that you're either eating on a picnic table or in your car, because it's walk-up only. read more

A staple favorite of mine. Perfect late night sweet tooth. Went for a shake last night and had the sweetest middle aged woman take my order, to whom I tipped generously. However today was a different story, there were only teenage girls working --one was on her phone in the back, despite there being a small crowd. I was with a friend and her little sister, we wanted to know what was on the brownie sundae, but upon asking the girl, she gave attitude and told us the contents as if we were dumb for asking. I wanted a chocolate ice cream cone, dipped in fudge, and was given a styrofoam cup of ice cream with hard chocolate slathered over the top, no cone in sight, I don't know what happened and I didn't ask as we were in a hurry. I am very disappointed in my visit today, and am reluctant to come back if there are solely teenage girls working. A cone should be a cone, not a cup with the hard dip coating just slabbed on top. If a customer has a question it should be answered with a smile. read more

Just go. Fun atmosphere in the summer. Great soft serve. You will develop a craving and have to go back again and again. Staff isn't always the friendliest, but I really don't mind that when I am wanting ice cream and it's a grab and go sort of setting. read more

i used to love this place. the food and ice cream are great but the service this year was horrible. I asked for a icecream sundae in a styro foam cup but they put it in a clear cup that was over filled. I said i asked for a styro foam cup and the lady said that costs more, i said i told her when i ordered it and she yelled at me saying it cost 10 more cents. not a way to talk to a customer/ ice cream lover. read more

This place is now the only place we'll get ice cream in town. The portion sizes are large enough that you could easily eat half and still have another full dessert to take home. The wizard comes in a ton of different flavors and its all really cheap. There's outside seating and its cash only so be prepared. Sad we didn't find it sooner! read more

if there was more stars above, the ice cream shake would get them. first off, its super affordable and better than dairy queen. and having it be a family owned business, makes the experience even better. Great view of motorcycles riding by provides entertainment for your kids. the cost is cheaper than the other places, and the sizes are twice as big. super delicious! :) theres even enough to take home and save for later....take that dairy queen! read more

I love this place...I've cream is so good, and the atmosphere is so great. Outdoor atmosphere, of course, but it brings one of the broadest groups together imaginable, and everyone is happy. I love being able to take our dog for ice cream (strawberry is his favorite). Can't wait for the weather to cooperate and for them to open once again. read more
