I booked this tour online to find something fun to do with my boyfriend while visiting Durango. It was my bf first time riding a snowmobiling. The drive up during a storm was also an adventure we were nervous about not making our time slot with the roads being bad. We were able to make it during our slot time and luckily still had time to get ready. I will note to leave a lot earlier during a storm. Once we arrived our guide made sure to provide us instructions and made sure we all had proper gear for riding. They also offered us some hot drinks before, half time and after our ride back at the trail head base camp. During breaks my boyfriend and I were able to take turns driving and enjoy the views. The back seat was very comfortable. Our guide took us on some loops in the area and we came back to camp to warm up and use the restroom during breaks. My boyfriend did go off the track by accident and our guide with a few other men helped get it out easily. We had a lot of fun with our guide who was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. We did run into a few other groups on the trails which caused some bottlenecking. Our guide was able to coordinate to go around or let the other groups pass by us. I highly recommend going with ice pirates and also wish they had more merchandise to buy to remember our trip. read more

SO SO FUN! I've lived in Durango, Colorado for almost 7 years and this is something I never thought to do but boy was I missing out! There is not a single thing I would have changed or can critique. From start to finish, our group was taken care of. The tour was 3 hours but it felt like an all-day experience (in the best way). The machines were brand new and the handlebars were heated. You also had a ton of heat on your legs and so I never got cold. We had a snowmobile get stuck a couple of times and never once were we made to feel bad. The guide, Derrick, laughed and joked the whole time while we got them unstuck. He also did a great job of finding the balance of making us feel safe, supported, and checked on while also letting us feel like we had a level of independence and weren't just in a slow single file line for 3 hours. The views were also impeccable! The whole time it was hard not to stop and just stare at the views around us. It seems like they took their time picking the huge course you ride on. 10/10! read more

Man, what can I say about this place? I called the day before to check on the status of the tours and a nice lady told me they had "plenty of snow." I booked online and it was super easy. The drive from Cascade Village was very easy. We got to the place and we're greeted promptly. Very quickly we had our helmets and had signed our consents. We met out guide, Tyler, and he put us through the basics. I could not have asked for a better guide than Tyler. My wife was very apprehensive about riding snowmobiles and he put our minds at ease. He was patient, knowledgeable, and very fun! We had a GREAT time and will be going back as soon as possible. Highly recommend this outfit. The vehicles were very new and easy to drive. We are here staying in purgatory and was looking for some new adventures after skiing for a few days. The phone reservation process was super easy and we had to change our day because of heavy snow and it was no problem. We did a 2 hour tour and James was our guide. During the three hour ride we were never uncomfortable (cold), sleds have heated grips and foot holes keep you nice and comfy! We wanted to go snowmobiling at a specific time and the staff of Ice Pirates graciously accommodated us. Fresh snow was so thick on the drive from Durango that the last ten miles took over a half-hour, coming down so fast we weren't sure we'd even make it! Tom reassured us the conditions were awesome, and he was so right! White out conditions made it challenging to see the trail at times but Tom kept us safe while also making sure we had an amazing ride! (There was so much fresh snow that the trails had only been 'broken' by another snowmobile, they weren't groomed.) We can't say enough positive things about Ice Pirates! So glad we chose ice pirates for our snowmobiling trip! We usually don't like guided trips because it feels corralled and super regulated, but this was not like that! We were placed in a group, so a total of 7 people including my husband and I. They took us all through the mountains to see beautiful views not accessible by car. They allotted some time for free play in a snowy pasture where you could just go mess around on the snowmobiles however fast or slow you wanted. Driving over the frozen lake as fast as you wanted was super fun too! Guides were friendly and knowledgeable and the snowmobiles looked brand new! Highly recommend! read more

We absolutely had a blast with the Ice Pirates! The experience was a total 5-star... gorgeous scenery, good guides, and a lot of time to get used to the snowmobiles and make the most of the day! Unlike a lot of tours like this, we got a full 3 hours plus - and that didn't count the instruction, debrief and suiting up. Our guides were very friendly, gave a comprehensive overview of the how-tos, and gave us a lot of reigns to have fun on the trails. We all had to single-file, but they let us spread out enough so that we didn't feel like a line cattle sniffing each others' exhaust. We were really able to get up to speed and feel some independence. That came with occasionally feeling like you may have lost the group when you came to a turn and hadn't seen which way the group went, but the guides kept an eye out for their "ducklings" and always doubled back to find the stragglers if necessary. There is a huge network of trails on Molas, and though I got the feeling we were doubling over our tracks at times, it was varied enough to be interesting the whole way through. What to wear - waterproof boots, snow pants/suit, good heave winter jacket, water and wind proof gloves, and a balaclava/muff/scarf you can put up over your nose since the wind will be hitting you! They can supply all of that except the latter if you're missing any of it or want to keep light on the plane. They also supply helmets and ski goggles! Don't get too excited about the promised hot cocoa and snack... on ours it was just hot cocoa, and after 3+ hours and a return back to the depot well after the promised dinner time, I wished they had made good on the snack! No big deal, though. The real reason this isn't a five-star rating, though, is because we weren't well informed about how far away it was. We did the train and snowmobile adventure package, and had no idea that we'd get off the train to get into a packed van for 30 minutes, and then have over an hour to drive back to the train station after our ride. We were dropped off almost an hour after the booking agent had told us we'd be back. Had I known all of that I would have booked separately and enjoyed the train one day and the snowmobiles the next as I was on my way to Ouray. But, the snowmobiling was A++++ It was our first time and we loved it! And couldn't believe our eyes at how beautiful this location was!! It was totally worth the drive - just wish they had been more upfront about it. read more

Erick and Lizzie are awesome guides and hosts. This is THE place to do your snow mobile tour in Durango or Silverton. We did the Durango Silverton Train up to Cascade Canyon and then were picked up in a nice Ice Pirates van and shuttled to Molas pass. We were then outfitted with helmets and went over a few pointers. We rode doubles - our 8yr old behind me and our 9yr old with my husband. The machines are well maintained and easy to use. Erick was patient with our slow pace. My 8yr old was uncomfortable for a bit and he stopped a few times to check on him. Halfway through he was having a blast. The scenery is stunning and breathtaking. When we returned Lizzie had a fire going and a goodies bag for each of us with a canteen, hot chocolate, pocket warmers and a snack! They warmed up the van and drove us back into Durango. It was definitely the highlight of our trip this year. read more

We were a bit hesitant to book a snow-mobiling trip but were encouraged to book a trip with Ice Pirates from some locals. Best part of our trip! Tom was fantastic. It was snowing the day of our trip and Tom picked us up promptly from Purgatory where we were staying. Upon arrival to the location of the snow mobiles we found out that our family was the only trip on the books that day! We had such a good time! We cannot thank Tom enough for taking us out although it was just us and the visibility was poor. We had seen the pass earlier in the week but the storm kept us com seeing the mountains. Guides were amazing, scenery is breathtaking, and lunch was delicious. The overall experience was well timed so that we got to see everything (including the top of the mountain which was one of the best parts ) and paced comfortably for lunch and short breaks where our guide gave us a ton of info about the area. People were great, except for owners. We came on Jan 31st after another tour canceled due to no snow in Durango. I call ice pirates to see if there was more snow in Silverton. They told me yes no problem we would have a great adventure, so I booked. They only wanted my money and lied!!!!! The other place in Purgatory was honest when they said no snow and gave me back my money and canceled the trip. Ice Pirates said they would take me on a tour so I booked them after the others canceled. When we showed up and they told us no snow but they could take us to see a waterfall and ice climbers or we can reschedule. We could not reschedule due to leaving the next day so we went in the shit tour. I know the snow fall is not there issue but do the right thing and cancel your tour like the other snowmobile outfit at Purgatory. The Tour they took us in was about 3 miles down the same road we just drove there on to a camp ground where there was a frozen waterfall the we turned around and came back. 90% of the travel was on gravel with the guide having to pull the snow mobile back into the road because they are not suppose to be driven in gravel. There was cars passing us and we had to pull off road for them. We could have driven in our car down the road and seen everything they took us in. We never got off the road onto any trails. It was obvious they just wanted to take our money and did not provide us with what the paid for. We got a totally discounted tour and not a discounted price. They are other snow mobile tour companies who are more honest than this place. read more
