I recently was on a two week tour of Iceland as part of a family trip for 8 people. (I did not book…read morethe tour.) I am posting this because I was very disappointed in the trip planned by and the service provided by Robert (Bob) Felch of Iceland Saga Travel and I hope that this review may help others who are considering using his services in the future. The tour was a very expensive trip that included air fare and hotels as well as a tour guide and van almost the entire time we were in Iceland. If you are not already aware, everything in Iceland is expensive, but this trip was excessively so. It seemed as though Mr. Felch's self-proclaimed contacts with Icelandic airlines, hotels and travel services led to being charged top dollar for everything. I got the sense that there was something amiss with Mr. Felch when I first had contact with him. He had booked all the flights (at much higher costs than I could find the same tickets by booking them by myself online), so I asked him, via email, to make sure I got an aisle seat. He responded by writing me: "You should call the airlines". Hmmm, I thought, why would someone pay a travel agent who tells you to do his job for him? Then we arrived in Iceland and met Óli Schram, our guide, who Mr. Felch described as: "one of the top guides in Iceland and our favorite". While Mr. Schram could be engaging, he had some very significant flaws as a guide and as a person. For instance, he repeatedly used his cell phone to talk and text while driving which is both illegal in Iceland and extremely dangerous. I asked him to stop doing it and he made a joke of my request and then ignored me. He also refused to ever lock the van where all our possessions (including some valuable electronics) were despite my requests that he lock it. He told me there was no crime in Iceland. I explained that I understood that, but would still be more comfortable if he locked the van. But he wouldn't. I don't really know why other than the fact that he was ornery. He also spent much of his time making disparaging comments about the annoying American tourists he regularly had to drive around his country - though he made sure to tell our group that we were much better than the average American. Even more troubling, the trip that Mr. Felch planned for our group called for us traveling (mostly in a van) for 6-12 hours per day. One day we literally spent 12 hours traveling. Each and every day we would wake up early to get in a van and drive. That is not my idea of a vacation. The only place Mr. Felch planned a day without driving was the ugliest city in Iceland (Isafjordour) which has nothing to do. It's in the Western Fjords of Iceland that took us 12 hours to drive to, including a 3 hour ferry ride. (By the way if you are planning a trip to Iceland, skip the Western Fjords or just fly in. There are other parts of the country that are much nicer.) I can't imagine planning a trip for people that involved an average of 8 hours in a van each and every day. It seemed as though Mr. Felch, in planning the itinerary had no idea how long it took to get from one place to another in Iceland. He also seemed to have no idea what was really worth seeing and what was a waste of time. He put numerous tourist spots on the itinerary that were well worth missing. Nor did he seem to have any idea which hotels were really nice and which were just average or not really worth staying in. As a coda to his poor work, on the flight back to the US he booked the 2 hosts of this expensive trip the 2 worst seats on the airplane (in the last row next to the toilets where the seats don't recline). Iceland is a beautiful country. There are a lot of fun things to see and do. The best things, in my opinion, are the hiking in beautiful locations and soaking in their natural hot springs. If you do book a trip to Iceland you may be far better off booking it yourself online and making your own judgments of what to do based on reading some good guide books. But if you do want to use a travel agent, I would strongly recommend finding someone besides Mr. Felch and Iceland Saga Travel.

Pretty bad experience at The Nantucket Hotel. The room, while nicely furnished, was next to the…read moredumpster which might have been ok, but it was also the loading zone for the hotel. Constant trucks in and out - most backing in with their beeper on. We had ants in the bathroom, two rounds of toxic chemicals and they were still there. We were near the maids closet - tons of traffic and noise there. Floorboards squeaking, so anytime you went to the ant infested bathroom, you would wake the other person up. Staff was friendly and only reason it's not one star review.

Paid for two of us for trip from Hyannis to Nantucket. Trip was cancelled due to mechanical issues…read more Ok that can happen, I get it. But the handling of it was bad. When we first arrived we were greeted by a salty sailor type guy who grumbled "it's not running today. Hasn't been running all day..." then rattled off a confusing list of options as if it was our problem, and "go to the ticket booth". We went to the ticket booth where the guy - who clearly hates tourists - rattled off options, each one with an attitude like it was just our problem and we had to know the area and options and if we didn't we were just stupid. "well you could take the freighter... well you could try that other boat over there... well..." We asked, "any idea when it could be back running again"? "nope." 2 stars because they gave us a free ride back. But even that wasn't clear. Return boat was canceled. Went to ticket building before the return trip... got another ticket person who was very unclear. "We can't give refunds here." (WTH, this is a large ticket building, not just a booth and they can't rectify there?!). Now we knew about the freighter and passenger "slow boats" (2 hours instead of 1) and were lower cost so we were just looking for the difference refunded. "can't do that here". then "just hop on, and it will be free back, then go to the ticket counter and talk to them". Of course when we got back nothing was open. So we got online the next morning. Managed to get a full refund so the return ride was free. Turned out ok. Slow boats took 2 hours off our day but whole trip ended up costing 1/4 of what it would have it the boat was working.

I honestly don't know what's taken me so long to write a review? I really like staying at Millpond because I get the authentic Nantucket island experience. The décor at Millpond is charming, a contemporary nautical theme, and the actual set up in the apartment is super cozy. There's a master bedroom and the guest bedroom can accommodate up to three, great for a friends getaway or a family trip. I have a full kitchen, fridge and television in my apartment so it really feels like home for the week! It also doesn't hurt that it's one of the most economical options in terms of vacation rentals on the island. Millpond is also conveniently located, just 1 mile from the beach and a five-minute stroll to downtown. Pretty much everything is within walking distance, but if you don't feel like exploring on foot they also have bikes that you can borrow for free on a first come first serve basis! The Saad family owns the complex, and they are extremely warm and gracious! Any time I need anything they are quick to accommodate and happy to do so. They are also true natives so don't hesitate to pick their brains for local insight. They know the best restaurants, which beaches are too crowded, best grocery stores etc. I also adore the fact that each time I stay at Millpond there's a complimentary bottle of champagne and Nantucket chocolate covered cranberries waiting for me in my apartment...so amazing! If you mention this when you are booking they will be sure to offer you the same VIP treatment. So if you're planning a vacation to the Grey Lady in the near future Millpond Inn is definitely the way to go hands down, both value and comfort wise. It's a hidden gem!

Martha's Vineyard, MA (as Amity Island)…read more When I hear of Martha's Vineyard I only know to associate it to Presidential vacations and retreats but there's so much more charm to it and I want to go back! Edgartown was the first town we visited at Martha's Vineyard. Located on the eastern side of the Island, Edgartown is a quiet, lovely village with a deep history of its New England whaling past... we enjoyed some shopping at local souvenir shops. We had lunch at the Seafood Shanty and stopped by the Ice Cream and Candy Bazaar for some ice cream and chocolates. This is the town where they filmed some of the scenes from Steven Spielberg's 1975 blockbuster "Jaws." The original sign used for Amity National Bank was displayed inside the Edgartown Nat'l Bank. We hopped on the VTA Bus #5 that took us to the Town of Aquinnah. It is the least populous town on the island. Here we were able to view the the multicolored clay cliffs of the Gay Head Cliffs and its surroundings including the Gay Head Lighthouse. That lighthouse was featured in Jaws too. Lastly, we got off the VTA Bus #13 at the Town of Oak Bluffs located at the northeastern shore of the island. This town is contrast to the old world charm of Edgartown and the vast fields at Aquinnah. Oak Bluffs is a vibrant and happening town. We saw the the Flying Horses Carousel but we totally missed the Gingerbread Houses! ... now I want to go back to MV again and see those pastel-colored cottages. Btw, there are no actual vineyards on Martha's Vineyard and the island is only accessible from the mainland via ferry. Review #3034

This was ABSOLUTELY LOVELY and NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT IT!!!!!…read more We stayed in Vineyard Haven, but went to Sheriff's Meadow 2 times and both times were beautiful. It's about a 1/2 mile trail and I had found it from a hiking book, and the book had provided information about the various stopping points, but I believe there were brochures at the beginning of the trail that probably had similar information. At the first stop there's benches that over look a pond and the ocean. On our 2nd visit the Regatta was going on so we sat in the most peaceful place imaginable watching the beautiful ships sailing by without a soul around. Truly memorable : )
