Top notch zoo for a city that is the size of Idaho Falls. It is almost entirely in the shade. A solid majority of the animals are outside. Laid out such that it is easy to do the whole thing without much backtracking or just selected parts. Good variety of animals. Has a petting/feeding zoo area. Designed so strollers go through easily. There's only one lunch place - just open on weekends. Animal enclosures are well maintained. They've been improving over the years. Things have gotten modernized. We saw the entire zoo and spent just over an hour and a half. We did get to see a couple of baby animals. read more

Checked out Idaho Falls Zoo while visiting this summer with some of the family. At 8 bucks a tickets you honestly cannot beat it and is a fun way to spend the afternoon. It's definitely a smaller zoo, as the town itself is not huge, but they have some cool exhibits interactive elements throughout the zoo and can definitely spend an hour or two their with the family easily. The monkeys were definitely a hit and of course can't forget the penguins. They also have a petting zoo my niece loved. They had a variety of food offerings as well, though we did no try any of them during this visit. The entire visit took about an hour in a half with a four year old, It's not the most amazing zoo I have been to, but with easy parking, affordable prices its a solid activity while in the area. read more

I dont know how to rate this. I've never lefta zoo feeling depressed before so this is a strange experience. While the zoo was clean and the staff friendly it was shocking how small the enclosures were. I have had bigger back yards than the lions current enclosure. Many other animals seem very distressed. I imagine the intentions are good but it just doesn't seem humane. read more

Visited this zoo today and left feeling a little meh. Right at the entrance, they've got $15 face paint stations, which feels pretty wild when the admission is only $8. It immediately puts parents in a tough spot. But the biggest gripe? The exit. You're forced to walk through their gift shop to leave. It totally ruins the end of your visit. It's either an overpriced $20 stuffy or a disappointed kiddo, and that's just not how you want to finish a nice stroll. They really need an alternative exit that doesn't route you through the shop, or at least label it properly so you know what you're getting into. It just feels like a money grab at the end of the day. read more

Ok so we debated the trip to go to this zoo but we decided to make the journey north. It is a bit short but the animals are up close and the littler kids had a great time. If you wanting to add a stop to your Idaho falls this is a good hour and a half hanging with the family. We were able to get a Groupon deal as well so definitely check that out. Delightful, smaller sized zoo! It took our family about 90 minutes to explore the zoo. Admission is very reasonable, with military and senior citizen discounts. What I really liked the lost about this zoo is the wonderful heavy foliage and shade. Walking through the zoo is very relaxing. The zoo is well maintained and clean. There is a nice assortment of animals, including a small petting zoo. The zoo has a small concession stand, but no restaurant. The zoo has a small gift shop. Parking is free. I absolutely love going to the zoo...but this one made me a little sad. I've been to countless zoos across the country. Unfortunately, the Idaho Falls Zoo is probably my least favorite. The zoo itself is small; way too small for animals to be kept, in my opinion. The enclosures don't give the animals much room to roam. In fact, a lot of the animals looked like juveniles. Maybe that's what makes the small enclosures somewhat acceptable. I would like to know what happens when they are fully grown. The alligator enclosure, for example, would not be able to house a fully grown animal. Many of the animals also looked very lethargic. You can walk around the entire zoo in less than an hour. I really wish I had better things to say, but seeing the animals here in such small and somewhat dirty enclosures made me really sad to be here. I obviously don't expect to come back and really wish the best for all the animal residents. read more

Great staff who were polite, professional and friendly. The zoo itself is on the smaller side but is clearly really well maintained and the exhibits are great. We went shortly after it opened and after about 2 hours saw everything just as it was starting to get busy. We witnessed the staff handle an incident with a lost child while we were there and I was impressed with how calmly and professionally it was taken care of. Kudos! read more

It's a small zoo that can be seen in under 2 hours. Great for little kids as they have a petting zoo, a playground and face painting. The tiger had recently passed when we visited and were on wait list for another. Once again, it is a small zoo so they don't have large animals like elephants, giraffes, rhinos, bears or hippos. The selection of primates are limited as well with no orangutans, gorillas or baboons. With the lack of larger and exotic animals, I was tempted to give only 3 stars but I gave it a 4 because of the reasonably low price of admission. read more

What a great spot to see all kinds of animals. It looks small but it's actually pretty big and clean. The animals were all active and out playing. The only animal we didn't get to see was the red panda but other than that, we saw a sloth bear, snow leopard, lions, zebras, parrots, monkeys, flamingos, camels as well as other cool animals. Definitely make a pit stop here to enjoy all the animals they have to offer. You are also able to feed the ducks/fish and there's a small petting zoo as well. I tend not to be a huge fan of zoos... I like seeing the animals, but I have a hard time not seeing the enclosures and cages they spend most of their time in. Birds gotta fly, fish gotta swim kinda thing. And as someone who has harvested his fair share of finned, furred, and feathered critters for the table over the years, I'm not some dauntless granola boy attributing anthropomorphic gobbledegook to a few dozen critters in cages. Three hots and a cot is probably a better deal for a tegu than for a gibbon or a hornbill or a snow leopard, I suppose... so maybe it's just wishing I could see these critters in their natural habitats instead of a small zoo... at least the ones with something more than a reptilian eat-sleep-make babies brains. All that said, this is a pretty good zoo for its size! The animals are well cared for, the enclosures seem to have proper open space, shelter/cover, and enrichment stuff like climbing and play equipment, and a team of volunteers are constantly doing stuff-- providing treats, answering visitor questions, and cleaning up. There is a petting zoo area, a talented face painter (only $5!!!), a snack area, and a small gift shop. A surprising variety of animals were here, including some endangered critters. The zoo is geared for kids, and you can get much closer to the animals than in a larger zoo like, say, San Diego or Los Angeles. Also, it was inexpensive to get in and not crowded. I couldn't help but notice that a lot of the animals were creatures featured in cartoons-- the volunteer staff even pointed out that the Sloth Bear from India was the basis of Baloo from Jungle Book, and the red crowned crane, red panda, tiger, snow leopard, monkeys, and albino white peacock definitely had a Kung Fu panda thing happening. Kids had a great time, and we were in and out in 2 hours. The large park in which the zoo is located has ample free parking, tennis courts, softball fields, picnic areas, and a huge skate park. This is quite an awesome zoo. I thought that it would be small but I was pleasantly surprised by how big it was! My 4yr old had a TON of fun at the petting zoo area! We're new to the area and we're happy to find a local zoo in walking distance. We came for opening day & we weren't expecting a whole lot from the size. It's well maintained, seemed like a lot of the animals were not out and about, the long winter took its toll on the exhibits and animals. My kids along with myself, all mentioned how small the enclosures are.. especially for the big cats! It was sad and they all seemed a bit confined and stressed. The lion kept his mouth partially opened walking the same 6 ft by the fence unaware of all the visitors. Coming from the Bay Area, California and experiencing the zoos there, it's hard to make a FAIR comparison. This is a great zoo but it's definitely for the younger kids. I have ages 13, 10, 5 & 3. The younger ones were interested in everything, but the two older ones got bored quick due to the size and variety of animals available to see. The primate exhibit probably was the best as far as variety, again. It was sad to see them in such tiny exhibits similar to jail with plexiglas & fake plants on there vs real foliage. Overall, I'll return because we have a membership. I'm hoping as the season opens and the animals continue to "wake up" .. hopefully it will get better with each visit. If not, it's still a good hour to kill time if you walk slow enough! read more

A fun place to kill some time especially with kids but is a good date spot too. The animals are fun to see and is a cute place to get some energy out. I do think the prices are too expensive for what it is and what you're getting especially when the prices posted outside are not updated. But I do think it's worth a nice stop. read more

Lions and tigers and bears ohh my! This is a very Nice zoo. Very well kept and clean. They have stroller rentals and water facuets throughout park. I really enjoyed the red panda and the childrens petting zoo. This kept my 4 year old daughter busy for more than 15 minutes. She was able to groom a baby goat and sheep. You can also feed them for the low price of $.25 Prices for admission are outrageously low. I'd love to go again next time we are here. read more

Nice little zoo. Not very expensive. $7 or 8 a person. Small but very interesting animals I have not seen in other zoos. Such as singing dogs of New Zealand,sloth bear and Bactrian Camel. We made a day trip to Idaho Falls to see the elcipse in totality. We decided to stop by and check the zoo out. It's the perfect size, shaded all the way, lots of animals, insanely clean! Their enclosures were cleaner than any restaurant kitchen. Plus all the animals were active. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the eclipse an hour or so before, but all the animals were making sounds, playing, walking around and eating. You never see this at Hogle. They seemed like happy little critters. I'm not sure how long it took us to go through, but it was perfect. The price is low, like $7. We got an "eclipse traveller discount" with took it down to $4.50 per person and our daughter (3 years old) was free! I know I should enjoy spending time with my family, but I really do hate having to make going to the zoo an all day event. Everyone is tired, hungry, and hot. There are no good food options, so you have to drag a huge wagon around with a cooler full of food and your kid that won't walk. Your kids won't eat any of it because they're cranky or just want you to buy something fom the gift shop.....anywho...small rant. This zoo is the perfect size! It's great for filling PART of your day with some fun, and not the entire day, like I dread. No crying, no coolers, no tantrums. This is a happy little place. I loved every minute. The park that it's in is massive. They have a small area with scary rusty carnival rides, called Funland. People seemed to be enjoying it. They have a nice big playground, lots of grass, baseball diamond, skate park, tennis courts...it's like a more enjoyable Liberty Park. Go! I recommend it! read more

This is a small but really nice and shady zoo. Very laid back, lots of places to stop and relax along the way. The staff are very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. We didn't see any huge animals like elephants or hippos etc, but they have a great mix of animals, a petting zoo, a face painter (who did a great job), and a couple places to grab a snack. It was under $10 a person to get in, well worth the couple hours we spent here. We had four adults, three kids and rented a stroller and it was less than $50. read more

Lots of variety of animals, good prices and super cute. Only complaint is that the strollers/wagons for rent were very dirty and most of the ones for smaller babies were missing straps therefore unusable, but thankfully they were very understanding we were refunded for the stroller. read more

I was super impressed by this zoo! I was not expecting all the amazing animals I was able to see for just $7.50 regular admission. The animals seemed content enough - I have been to zoos where the animals nervously pace or appear distraught or bored and Tautphaus, though small, gives the impression that the animals are well cared for. For a small zoo, there really are a great variety of animals and you are able to get pretty close to them. They have a tiger, lions, wallabies, emus, flamingos, zebras, a sloth bear, lots of birds and primates among others. The lemurs were so cute to watch - I could have spent all day looking at them, I think. I am in my thirties but the Children's zoo is always a highlight for me because who doesn't like to pet a goat? In standard petting zoo fashion, you can pay a quarter and get some food to share with the farm animals who will knock each other out of the way to lick your hand. If I lived in the area I would for sure go to their events like Brew at the Zoo and would probably become a member so I could ooooh and ahhhh at the animals on a regular basis. read more

My 2.5 year old can walk the whole zoo without a complaint, so 5 stars lol. The tickets are affordable and staff are always friendly. We go when it opens, spend 1-2 hours, then leave as it starts getting busy. More of an enjoyable experience than busy zoo's like San Diego and LA. So this zoo may not have elephants or giraffes, but it does have lions, tigers, bears, monkeys and flamingos. In fact, they claim to have over 400 animals which is apparently the largest collection in all of Idaho (bigger than Boise's zoo? That's crazy!). The prices are reasonable (adults: $6, children: $3), and becoming a member is a great deal! For just $30, you can buy an individual membership, and for $65 a family of 6 can purchase a general membership. As a single mother of three, I think this is a great option for summer entertainment. My kids especially love the petting zoo where they can pet, feed and brush the goats (.25 for a handful of pellets) to their hearts' content. We always visit all the animals, but the monkey and lion exhibits seem to be a favorite (we have never once been able to spot the snow leopard, a great disappointment to my oldest each time we go). They also host a number of other events, although the only one we've been to is Boo at the Zoo where the kids go through the week before Halloween to trick or treat at different booths; it's a safe and fun environment, and the thing I loved about it most was that my kids didn't walk away with a lot of candy--their bags were full of little toys and other sugar-free goodies. For a little local zoo, it's a lot of fun and can keep patrons busy for a number of hours. We always go a handful of times every year. read more

This is a nice little zoo. They have lots of differnt birds, some penguins, even Snow Leopards, Lions, and a Tiger. A great place to take children. My only complaint is their hours. I bought a season pass, because I like the Tiger, but I was never able to see her because they are closed in the evenings. read more

Glancing over the other reviews, I am surprised that it is only getting 4 stars. While I understand that this isn't the most amazing zoo but considering we are in A small town in Idaho and that it is the largest zoo in Idaho, it deserves 5 stars. I was amazed at the quality of the enclosures and the prestige of some of the animals (what small zoo's has lion, tiger and bear?? Oh my this one!) The zoo features many animals that are typically seen at larger zoos: lions, tigers, sun bears, penguins, red panda, primates, variety of exotic birds, and an albino peacock. I have left out some other amazing animals but you get the point. Awesome zoo for a small Idaho town. read more
