We came here a few times as it was steps from our rented beach house. The atmosphere is really nice, just wish it was bigger. They had live music which we sat on our front steps and listened to and clapped after every song. We ate here a few times and had drinks serveral times. The staff is really super nice and accomodating. The drinks were all great and the food was good too! I woud definitely recommend going here if you are in town. First time visitor to Atlantic Beach, and my girlfriend and I came here for a quick lunch on our last day - and the Biergarten did not disappoint. We sat at the bar and ordered a beer and several dishes - the fried pickles, while not what I expected, were quite tasty, and the dipping sauce was delicious. The chicken wing lollipops were divine, with just the right amount of heat. Lastly, the shrimp tacos were delicious - the shrimp was perfectly grilled, and all of the flavors balanced out beautifully. Everyone is super friendly here! Looks like a very cute place for the summer, with fire pits outside and lots of tables and chairs. We went here in the winter, so we could not partake of that. I loved the shrimp tacos- super fresh and great flavor/texture combinations. Perfect fresh beach meal in walking distance from the sand. Friendly service. Went back a year later....the place is a train wreck. The employees don't know the meaning of team work. The bar tender and another guy sitting around, while one waiter is trying to keep up. Wife & I went here for lunch to explore what Atlantic Beach has to offer. We started with the pickle chips & were underwhelmed. The pickles were very very thinly sliced to the point of where the breading overtook the taste to where we couldn't even taste the pickles. The sauce that came with the pickles however was very tasteful, almost like a tangy ranch (however the container the sauce came in was not big enough for all the pickles so we had to order a 2nd container which was an up charge). The wife got Baja chicken tacos & I got the carne asada tacos and both loved the two tacos that came with the order along with the homemade chips/salsa (once again the salsa came in the same container as the pickle chip sauce, so you need two of them for your chips). Lastly we got the lollipop wings to go & those were delicious as they were covered in Harissa sauce and came with what appeared to be a house made ranch. The flies! The flies! The flies! We didn't get our drinks until we asked for them after we got our food. We ended up eating in our car once we got our food bc the flies were in the 100s. The fish tacos were not great. They had two different sauces and just fish. No other type of topping. Lettuce or cabbage would be better. Not sure that they can help it but something needs to be done about the flies. read more

I will start by saying the food we did get was great. After waiting two hours for our food with the only explanation being "we are having a little kitchen issue" they brought us our "loaded fries" and they were tortilla chips instead of fries. They then brought us our food with side salads instead of onion straws and fries. They didn't tell us any of this ahead of time and they didn't offer us alternatives or compensation until we complained. I would say this is a great place to go for drinks and to just sit outside and listen to music but I wouldn't go for food. read more

Excellent sausage, well-selected beers, and outdoor seating that takes full advantage of the sand, the sun, and yes, palm trees. Not sure if those last ones are native to Atlantic Beach, but they sure pump up the "island style." My wife and I have eaten here twice to date. Both times we crushed the pretzel with mustard and beer cheese dips. You can't go wrong with Hefeweizen and a pretzel, I always say. I enjoyed the crab cake sandwich; the second time I ate the bratwurst. Bier selection: they have authentic imported German bier as well as American-brewed beer in Belgian, German, and local styles. Mother Earth and real Kölsch are two examples. We plan to visit das Garten every time we go to Atlantic Beach. See you there! read more

They have a limited menu because of COVID-19, but they made a burger for my son even though it wasn't on the limited menu. My food was delicious - the French fries were fantastic. My husband's meal was not prepared properly, but the owner was very gracious and apologetic and refunded his meal. He explained that he was training new employees (as a result of having been closed because of the pandemic). read more

So this is just the the service and website because we can't eat here because they're always closed. First we came on Monday after seeing they had Nutella chocolate cake on the menu. When we got there 30 minutes before closing they said the kitchen was closed and that they didn't have desert. Strange, but whatever we shrugged it off. We came back a second time and we checked the website which said "open on Tuesday" surprise it's closed. We had driven from Havelock so we weren't pleased. The female server has the personality of a piece of drift wood, but I didn't care I wasn't there to make conversation, I came to eat and be on my way. I love the small space and simplicity of everything. It's not a place you come to with a group of more than 4 and expect 5 star service. Ordered 'The cure burger' medium rare w/ O rings in the side. Unfortunately, the patty and the egg were overcooked and the rings too thin and salty for my taste. I sent it back, the bartender didn't seem to be too happy when I told her about my burger but she ordered me a new one. After trying the second one, this time with fries, the egg was good (a little over but good), the patty, straight up medium- well and very BLAND! Fries were ok. We've been coming to Atlantic Beach for over ten years now and always lamented there wasn't a place like Idle Hour. Now there is and it's great. Relaxed, unfussy, fun and yummy. Excellent burgers and tacos. Great draft beer selection, picnic tables in the sand and fresh air. What more could you ask for? Live music? Yeah, they've got that too. Highly recommend! In a city of lots of tourists and an over abundance of gaudy beach shops selling everything from towels to shot glasses to hermit crabs, this place is an absolute gem in Atlantic Beach!! We decided to check out Idle Hour while visiting my brother. Fairly small interior with a very nice outdoor seating section (lots of hammocks, swings, seating outside). They also had 2 tvs inside. The place already won in my book as they let us put the NC State game on....which in Eastern NC, everyone knows ECU is king. They had about 8 beers or so on top. A few German beers, a few IPAs/localish beers, a cider, an a domestic (to satisfy those beer drinkers that like drinking basically water). The bartender gave us a few tastes and I ended up with a fantastic German beer! For food, we got the pretzal (came with 2) and my bro got the crab BLT. Do yourself a favor and order the crab BLT....this thing was absolutely delicious!! So glad we stopped by this place and we will absolutely be returning next time we are in town!! read more

I walked in, and the greeter/waiter was super amazing. Food was terrific best nachos in town, and I ordered a burger with the house sauce. The burger was super juicy and filled with flavor. The house fries are similar to The In-Out Burger but are very flavor-filled and are seasoned to perfection. The house sauce is delicious.
