Idle Isle candy store is a step back in time mixed with a little bit of modern day candy for those that want something familiar. They have an assortment of chocolates under the case and a variety of brightly colored candy on shelves in the middle of the store-right at eye level of the children. Smart placement. There's not a huge variety, but a modest selection of candies. Notable assortment of cotton candy flavors as well as a variety of flavored pretzels. Service is friendly, although kind of passive. It doesn't really have that old fashioned feel with the shopkeeper providing customer service directly, but instead a pleasant enough teenager that is happy to ring you up, but won't likely make a recommendation on which chocolates will get you out of trouble with the wife.

Nut balls....Filled with maple cream, rolled in chocolate and chopped almonds. Yum!

Giving Idle Isle nutballs as gifts is one of my mom's traditions and since I've lived out of state most of my adult life, it's a gift I look forward to every year. Their toffee and fudge is also incredible. A Christmas treat I love!

When traveling near anywhere, my first order of business is to locate any chocolatiers at my destination, or along the way. Seriously, I will research this prior to booking a hotel or car or planning any other activities...I have my priorities in order! On a recent trip from SLC to West Yellowstone, my candy options were limited, but I was going to at least one chocolate shop, so Idle Isle made the cut. Our visit required only a 5-minute detour from I-15 to downtown Brigham City. I had never been to BC previously, and the area is perhaps a little run down and small, but also sweet and kind of charming in the way many slightly dated main streets tend to be. One could happily spend an hour or few meandering through other shops and settling in for a meal at one of the neighboring cafes. On a Friday morning, we easily secured parking right along the street. The bricked exterior of Idle Isle is cute, displaying a fantastic antique-y neon sign, and even offering a bench should you desire to enjoy your selections outdoors. Inside, it is not so attractive, with plain walls, scant decor, and old office-style carpeting, but you're also not hanging out here for the ambiance, so no big deal. Glass cases display a variety of colorful Boden stick candy, fudge, nostalgic sweets, cotton candy, and some bagged treats not made in house, but come on, chocolates are where it's at (I would have tried the fudge, but it looked a little dry, and paled in comparison to my selections). They have a variety of sugar free options, too! One thing I found very smart, was their use of a container to gather up everything you have chosen, which is then placed in the appropriate size box and weighed. Often, I go to a chocolate shop and have to determine ahead of time how many pieces or what size package I'll want, only to invariably select more than I'd intended! Of note, the chocolates are not placed in traditional paper cups, instead rather unceremoniously dumped into the box. This did not bother me as I was purchasing for myself, in fact I appreciate that it is less waste, but is something to consider if you are intending to give them as a gift. I did not feel the presentation suffered much, especially as I found the proclamation of "SUPERLATIVELY fine candies" in old-fashioned script running across the top of the box adorable. I tried a variety of treats, and noted that both their toffee and caramel are well made. The toffee, especially, was wonderful, nearing burnt, and I wish the caramel had that same characteristic, but it was still excellent (particularly when paired with salt). Many of the fillings are fondant based, and while this is not something I necessarily love, theirs was smooth and luscious. A few had noticeably artificial flavors, but the majority tasted natural. I particularly enjoyed the penuche, opera, and tangy huckleberry. Their square of soft and moist marshmallow was definitely housemade, and delicious in dark chocolate. My overall favorite was the nougat: not too sugary, with a fantastic chewy-crunchy, but non teeth-breaking texture, plus generous nuts. The other favorite was a total surprise: their strawberry macaroon. I ate it chilled, so it was perhaps harder than would be at room temperature, but man, the filling was this fantastic toothsome texture, all fruity coconut perfection. Their house specialty are Almond Crèmes: a soft almond flavored filling coated in milk chocolate and rolled in thin flakes of almond. Compared to most of what I tried, this was not THAT wonderful, but I certainly would have enjoyed them more in dark chocolate. Other than these and the English Toffee, they offer almost everything in either milk or dark, and, though it is always my preference, I think dark is especially appropriate here as all fillings ran quite sweet. Prices are excellent at $19 a pound (a few dollars more for the two goodies above). Boden candy is $12.50 lb, everything else was just as reasonable. Idle Isle offers true old-fashioned and well-made goodies, and is worth going out of your way for. I admit I finished my near-pound box within just a few days, and hope to make my way back up to Brigham City for a restock soon!

At $25 per pound, the price is right up there, however the candies are good and the selection is huge.

This was absolutely the worst business I have ever been to. We went for my Mother's 80th birthday…read moreas a group of 14, on a Friday night. The night started off poorly when myself and others tried ordering a baked potato as a side and were informed that was not available because it had not been prepared that night by the staff. My sister tried ordering 3 different menu options, all were "not available". I ordered a rib eye steak medium. Twenty minutes after everyone else had their food, my steak finally came, medium well. I notified the waitress and she said she'd let them know. Out walks a man, who then proceeds to tell me my steak is cooked exactly as I ordered it and he'll show me a picture of how a steak cooked medium should look. My family member sitting next to me also ordered her steak medium, hers was actually pink, mine was not. He then started to pull his phone out to prove to me, I was wrong. My brother told him to put his phone away, my steak was overcooked, period! He left, but was not done with me yet! As we were all gathering to take a family picture he returned and pulled me aside to again show me a picture of what my steak should look like. Yet even his picture showed pink, of my steak had any pink, it was the tiniest bit of pink you've ever seen. In all this commotion I also found out that my sister did not have any cheese on her Malibu chicken. Yet this cook proceeded to tell me that they take great pride in their food and he was showing me that my steak was cooked to the standard it should have been. My brother in law told this man to leave me alone and drop it. My sister told him she tried ordering 3 different things and they didn't have them. His reply was there will always be shortages. My sister then told him it was done and over, leave us alone. I'm a very understanding person. I don't like to complain if my food isn't up to par. But this was bad even for me. The waitress we had was so nice! Yet this man ruined everything about this experience for everyone! When you're paying a lot of money for food it should be prepared in a way that you're like. Really it should just be prepared like it states on the menu. To order a simple Malibu chicken and not have a slice of cheese is ridiculous! To see that this place has this high of a rating is appalling! Clearly it's because there's not a lot of places to eat in Brigham City! Because of this place was in a bigger city, it would be black listed instantly! Especially with a cook who comes out and argues with customers who aren't satisfied with his cooking. Do better!!

The service is wayyyy better and so is most foods. Some are still not as good as they used to be, like the French onion soup and apparently most soups, but the rest we tried were very good. Good for them and us. Now we have another place to dine out again here in Brigham.

But that's another story... This is a cute drive in that also has tables and counter service inside- so you can enjoy your dining experience in a variety of ways. My partner and I visited and had lunch at the counter-a massive hot dog and a cheeseburger between the two of us. Respectable food. I didn't much care for the fries, I felt like they lacked any real flavor (should have ordered fry sauce, I think that would have helped.) The shake and ice cream were good-definitely the star of the show. Service was ok-I don't think any of the staff was over the age of twenty and there was always a group gathered in the kitchen area chatting. Of course, they are kids, so that's bound to happen. They could be doing much worse.
