In the 1950's there was only one Catholic church in the entire south Broward area. St. Stephen's was created when 250 people from the Hollywood and Miramar areas came together to worship in a humble space created out of wood crates and cement blocks on September 6, 1953. A need for Catholic services was filled and by 1954 a church building was completed. The building was enlarged as more people attended the church and on August 12, 1956, Fr. Robert Schleffen was commissioned to become the first Pastor of St. Stephen the Protomartyr Church. In 1991 the church was refurbished to celebrate its 35th anniversary. The Creation stained glass windows were commissioned from renowned artist, Sister Diane Couture, SSJ. Today the church body is made up mainly of Hispanics and African Caribbean Islanders who worship under the motto "ONE LORD, ONE FAITH, ONE BAPTISM" The church is a multi-ethnic and multi-language Catholic community. The church offers a daily weekday and weekend mass with a schedule provided on the church website. I love learning about the history of different churches in the community and St. Stephen has a long legacy of helping those who are hungry with the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry. They are currently accepting donations.

The priest also was in a rush while he prayed for our family and he wouldn't stay to answer our questions and bushed us off. They also missed my sisters name for a misa that my mom payed for and refused to give a refund. This is the worst experience I've ever had in a place of worship!! Despite it all, a lady named Vicky was attentive to our needs and she showed compassion. If only everyone that we dealt with was more like her.

For this priest to disrespect mom by not only being 25 minutes late to her funeral which we paid him for, he referred to mom as "he" Repeatedly and when he did attempt to use her name, it was not her name! Instead of apologizing for being late, he actually said he forgot he had a funeral, although we had emailed the night before. He had been to our home twice. He gave mom the last rights. Because he was so beyond disrespectful I will never set foot in a Catholic church again. There is something fundamentally wrong with the catholic church if this is acceptable

They were all very compassionate and sympathetic for the funeral, offered magnificent spiritual insights to everyone. Some angry and understandably grieving people have left horrible reviews attacking the pastors for not being atheistic and agnostic enough during funeral services, but I suspect those are coming from people again understandably going through a tough time because the sermon, messaging, and interactions were all very compassionate and in line with Catholic teaching, whether or not you align with the ever-increasing atheism of the Church under socialist Pope Francis

The worship is always powerful and moving, the message is consistently incredible, and I walk away feeling both challenged and encouraged every single time. What I love most is the variety they offer--multiple service times throughout the week, including a Thursday evening service, which makes it so easy to stay connected no matter how busy life gets. They also provide fill-in-the-blank notes to follow along during the message, which I think is awesome--it keeps you engaged and gives you something to take home so you can study and reflect on it later. It truly feels like a church family and a place where faith comes alive.

Construction on a 600 seat church began in 1979 and a school was completed in 1987. The church's ministry is the HOPE Outreach Center which provides financial assistance, food for the hungry, and after school activities. To fund their charities the church hosts different fund raisers through out the year. I attended one, a parking lot rummage sale. They also host a huge carnival twice a year. The most recent one ran October 24 through the 27.

Whenever I visit them we go, usually on Saturday night 5 pm mass. I really enjoy the country and rustic feel that they offer. They have high vaulted ceilings that make it seem more open. However, the lighting is really bad, it's the harsh yellow lights and the sound system is horrible. Depending on where you sit, it is so hard to hear the priest. I really feel bad for saying anything negative about a church but it is simple steps that they could change to make all the difference. They also have a school and doing different activities such as, they have a carnival once a year. The music is usually the same people but very lovely. If it is close to your home, Davie or Cooper City, I would say definitely check it out.

They have a whole section…read moreof authentic food from different countries...Argentina, Philippines, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Spain, USA, etc. The food is awesome!!! We never miss going to this carnival because of all the great food. We always have the Chori pan and alfajores from the Argentina booth and the corn on the cob from another booth. This year they had a booth that was selling ribs with fries and it was oh so yummy!!!
