This place is clearly a neighborhood favorite. Huge tables of families out for Sunday dinner. Totally packed, with extra (heated in cold weather) seating out back. Family friendly (lots of kids) in spite of the fact that the menu is really high quality. Incredibly friendly service. The menu looks a little small at first; a few antipast, a few main courses, literally 3 basic pasta dishes. To me this is always a good sign; a small menu tells me this check wants to do a limited number of dishes really well. And oh boy were these good. We had a simple linguini in a cream sauce with lardons, mushrooms and onions. Not too much dairy, not too salty, perfect flavor and texture, perfect al dente fresh pasta. Just heaven. 99% of cream sauces make a dish too heavy to enjoy and this one was so easy to eat. My wife had a gnocci packed full of roasted veg (beats, broccoli) with pesto and almonds and it was so fresh and warm and nourishing. The pizza was unlike any I've ever had - more sauce than i'm used to and it came UNCUT! I've never had a pizza delivered whole which honestly suprised and delighted me (though I did have them take it back and cut it for me, I was gonna butcher that thing.) The crust was delicious and perfect, simple margarita ingredients were perfect. We were too full to try their tiramisu but I bet it's perfection. My SO and I are in Montreal on vacation. He is a foodie and love finding good neighborhood restaurants to try. We are so happy we found this place. The ambiance is so charming and the service was so amazing. We remarked that they felt like family friends. We shared part of a Margarita Pizza for an app and the split the spinach ravioli and linguini bolognese. We both agreed: the ravioli was out of this world. The flavor was both rich and light. We also agreed that the linguini was cooked to perfection but that the sauce needed more meat given the amount of pasta served. This aside, we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience and appreciate being able to sip our wine and enjoy each other's company and that of the staff. read more

We just don't understand the reviews. I had the bolognese - bland and the pasta was chewy and stiff. My son had a pizza and you could easily tell it was cheap cheese, crust was not fresh. It looked like a frozen pizza. It just had the vibe of a place that cuts corners and isn't putting quality first. So frustrating we wasted an evening eating here. read more

Disappointing experience on a Sunday night at this restaurant. I came here about two month ago for a friend's birthday. We made a reservation for 7 people and although the restaurant was virtually empty, they seated us at a tiny squishy table on the terrasse. It was so small that it became a whole to do for anyone to get up to go use the bathroom. Before the birthday girl arrived, my friend told the waitress that we were here for a birthday. The waitress just said "ok" in a completely disinterested way.. She was very indifferent, bordering on rude for the next 3.5 hours (yes you read that right, three and a half hours!!) of our meal. On sundays, they have an option to get the set menu for 40$. I wasn't that hungry so I opted to just get a main but about half the table got the menu prix fixe. I expected the meal to go longer than usual because there were more courses but after 3.5 hours, I realized it was quite excessive. Even once we were done our last course, we waited over 30 minutes for a waitress to come see us so we could ask for our bills. I eventually got up and went into the restaurant because I just wanted to leave. I ordered a ravioli dish which I found one dimensional and too buttery. Some people enjoyed their meals and some were indifferent. The prix fixe deal is actually really good as the portions of each course are big. Those who ordered it were happier than those who didn't. Overall, I found the unfriendly pretentious service to be their biggest problem and for that reason, I don't think I'd be back. read more

I really wish these guys these best but I have to keep it real and bump this down a star based on my last experience. I ordered the fish and pasta main and it was quite expensive and I found it fine, but not mind blowing or delicious. Not a big deal. When the owner asked how I was enjoying it I said it was fine and instead asking any follow up questions he was shocked not to receive pure praise and made fun of the use of the word fine. Just a small moment but a bummer and it came back to me when I walked by recently and asked myself why I had stopped frequenting the establishment. I think the last thing people want or deserve when they are spending their hard earned moolah is to feel mocked or like their tastes don't matter or their business is unappreciated. Wow! This place is simply fantastic! The service is wonderful in this small intimate restaurant and has both a fixed price menu for five courses or a standard selection as well. We got there late, just a half hour before they closed so we couldn't do the full five courses, but they happily seated and served us some of the most amazing Italian food I've had. We got the mushroom risotto which was cooked perfectly and so flavorful. We also had the cod which was served on a bed of spaghetti squash with marinated tomatoes and honey mushrooms and this incredible spiced oil over everything. The fish was tender and flaky with a crisp crust on one side. I seriously have never had cod that was as good as what they were serving. And finally we had the seafood gnocchi with a delicious tomato sauce ladled over soft gnocchi and a mix of calamari, clams and shrimp. Sounds good right? Well not as good as the chef who most nights also sings some amazing tenor opera in kitchen and out in the restaurant itself. Wow. Did I say that already? Where do I begin? Il Bazzali serves up an Italian/french hybrid with a charming and aesthetically chic atmosphere- a real hidden gem nestled right near Beaubien metro. Davide, chef and owner, is always there with his team making the freshest and most exquisite dishes, whether you're there for brunch or supper (which says a lot here in Montreal.) The ravioli and pasta are handmade every day, and if you're lucky you can catch Davide serenading patrons with the dulcet tones of his opera singing (really!). The staff are attentive, kind, and truly care about your experience with the food and your time spent there. They take care of you. Most recently I went for brunch with my brunch gang and had The Classic- the typical eggs-sausage-bacon-and-patato-fare...but frankly, it put other restaurants' breakfasty attempts to shame. The eggs and baguette were nestled up to a gorgeous sausage- all cooked perfectly, and the potatoes were all that potatoes wish they could be, in thanks to the crisping magic of duck fat. The chefs have been whipping up smoothies lately; mine tasted like the edible manifestation of a pineapple cloud. All in all, this is the place to take your friends/clients to for that wow effect, for the ideal date, or to catch up with your ladies or fam. BYO wine too! read more

My girlfriend and I happened upon this place, and we were so pleasantly surprised. Davide and his team really put effort into what they do. The place is quaint, homey, and filled with love and hospitality. I ordered the Ravioli alla Parmiagana and it was rich but not heavy, with herbal aromas and sage-infused butter. My girlfriend ordered the Gnocchi with Seafood and the dish was a hearty portion of shrimp, mussels and other seafood gems with a delectable white and red sauce. I am a big fan of this restaurant. My husband and I are so glad there is a quaint yet very good Italian restaurant in our neighborhood that is not over-priced and has the sweet charm and decor of Bazzali. We have come for lunch on several occasions while we have had only had dinner here once and sadly, we have yet to attend Davide Bazzali's singing dinner theatre, but we plan to try it at least once in the near future. My recommendation: come and discover the lunch menu... it changes all of the time and each day it boasts something new, fresh and delicious! Cute little place, bring your own wine is always fun. The waitress gave decent service but she seemed new and/or rushed. $40 for five courses is quite the bargain, and the presentation was nice. The problem was just the food: tastes bland, reheated from frozen (seemed to be one young hipster guy in the kitchen doing just that). They drown everything in either olive oil, sage butter or Kraft pseudo-parmesan to at least give it richness and cover up the blandness/lack of fresh ingredients. My beef ravioli were like sloppy joe's, pasta was overcooked. Honestly, for what you're paying it's an OK value. When I was a college student I loved going to these types of places on a Friday night. But if you like good Italian, this is a neighbourhood where you can pay a bit more and get a lot, lot more for it. read more
