Zio Pesce means "uncle fish" and the decor is hip with fishing related objects on the walls, white table clothes and at least one waiter who translated the menu for us, answered all questions and ensured that not just the meal, but the evening was terrific. We started with a fabulous fish ceviche. Very fresh. Lovely flavor. Next we shared an order of bauletti. Bauletti means little trunks (think suitcases, not swimming). They are little squares filled, in this case, with cod. The bauletti are then cooked in a tomato sauce and bechamel sauce like you'd bake lasagna. It was great. The secondo was crispy octopus (polpo croccante). The octopus wasn't crispy but was grilled and coated with toasted bread crumbs and served on potatoes and greens. What great combination. All of the this was accompanied by cold, crisp lovely vermentino from Sardinia. For dessert we had super fresh strawberries with a lovely sauce I can no longer recall except to say that my mouth is watering thinking about it. This was a great meal and a great evening in a lovely ambience. Zio Pesce is the kind of restaurant you'd drive across town for in Washington or Atlanta or Toronto -- if you could get a reservation . Which brings me to the final point: you need to make reservation if you want to eat at Zio Pesce. The gentleman who answered the phone switched to English as soon as he heard my bad Italian.

I usually try the yellowfin tuna here, it's super delicious. The fish is seared which means it's heated only at the surface. So, if you don't like raw fish, this is not for you. The fish I comes with potatoes and some green leaves, so quite filling. Zio Pesce has become one of my favorite restaurants in Milan because of the quality of food as well as the dining experience itself. The staff are very kind and attentive, and do what they can to keep you satisfied. Once, they gave us a free bottle of wine just because we had to wait for about 15 minutes (with a reservation). This was far from my expectation considering what I see in some places in Italy. Yes, they care about customers!

You can study restaurant reviews all you want, but sometimes you just have the good fortune to wander into a wonderful restaurant. And that was exactly our experiences at Al Mercante. We ate on the beautiful terrace which faces the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana art museum. The small piazza where Al Mercante is located was very quiet at night. The interior of Al Mercante is quite elegant. While the majority of the clientele were foreigners, there was small wedding party a couple of tables over. We had the very good fortune to be waited on by Angelo, a professional waiter who loves his job (23 years at Al Mercante!) and who ensured that we had a fine dining experience. Angelo speaks beautiful Spanish and we were able to have a more complete discussion than usual about the menu. I've managed to forget the details of the wonderful food we ate so I hope I. don't commit any serious omissions as I reconstruct our meal. We had an appetizer which I cannot recall. I think it was some sort of raw fish (crudo sounds better) with just a hint of citrus almost like an Italian version of ceviche. Our primo (shared) was wonderful: porcini mushrooms on roasted potatoes. What great taste from two simple ingredients. The secondo (also shared) was salmon coated in sliced almonds and a wonderful lemony sauce. Quite simply it was perfect. We had a terrific white wine that might have been a vermentino. Angelo didn't have biscotti with vino santo so he suggested sbrisolona -- another kind of dessert biscuit. -- that seemed to be homemade -- and a digestivo. In between all of this were wonderful amuse bouche. Here's what I'd like you to know: this was a wonderful, elegant meal served by a very professional waiter in beautiful surroundings. The restaurant is not very big and it was full to the last seat. Luckily I didn't had to wait long. For lunch they have a different menu with first dish, second dish and desert. That is normal in Italy. Every Joyce has 3-4 dishes to choose from. The stuff is very friendly and speaks english so I tried with my Italien-english to order. Everything worked fine for me, i had risotto and vitello tonato. Both was very nice and tastefull. For lunch you pay only 10€ and an espresso and a water is included. A very good price.
