Pros: No over the top obnoxious perkiness typical in salons No attempt to sell me hair products Local art on display (you can sell your stuff there too) Phenomenal view of the neighborhood Exceptional conversationalist Particular attention to bangs (and anyone with fringe knows how important that is) Cons: The only one I could think of was that he used his hands a lot instead of a tool during hair drying, causing a lot of tugging. I've always wondered about this place! I live in the neighborhood & my stylist recently moved away. I have had massive hair loss during the plague, and used to have long luscious locks, but they've broken off & look awful. I managed to knot myself a little dread lock in the back after I tied it up for a formal event. It was a "hair emergency" , so I made a same day (7pm Friday evening!) appointment with Vlad and I feel like I not only got a great much shorter & healthier haircut, but I'm looking forward to picking up our conversation where we left off. Booked a cut out of desperation to keep myself from hacking my own hair. Haven't had a professional touch my head in over six years so I was a bit terrified. Chose this spot based on name, location, convenience, some reviews and some pics but wasn't sure what to expect. What did I get? A fun experience, good conversation, and a great cut that I am very happy with! I didn't know what I wanted and just knew a couple of things I didn't want, so I let Vlad decide what to do, and he did a terrific job of taming my hair, giving it movement and a shape that flatters my face. It suits my lazy lifestyle but with a little effort will look quite glamorous. I couldn't be more pleased! let me start off by saying that Vlad is very nice, and i hate writing this negative review. But...i don't want anyone else to end up in my situation going off all of the previous wonderful reviews as i did. He may very well give great cuts, but i'm too depressed over my tangerine/lemon hair to consider his cutting skills. After almost 6 hours, my naturally level 7, but kind of ombre hair turned out exactly opposite of what i asked for. What i asked for should have been EASY to achieve, i've done it myself. I simply wanted to have my hair done for me, which i hoped would save time and give better results. The only bad thing about Vlad is that in celebrating his countless victories in hairstyle competitions throughout the years his memory has been decimated. A veteran Vladian who gets cut here trusts that Vlad knows what's best for his/her hair anyway, in the long run he does. Vlad rules! This place is great for both guys and women. His haircuts are priced very fairly and he can usually get you in within a day. He will do your hair up right, and you can hear all about his trips to Cambodia, Ibiza, and beyond. I always learn something new when I go there, and have a good time while I'm being improved. I gotta get a picture of this new haircut up here, it's too good to hide away from the world. My girlfriend pays less for her hair then any other girl in Chicago, and when her bangs start to grow out, she can go in and get them re-done for free. Also, Vlad is just an interesting guy. This is a great alternative to getting your hair cut in a fancy salon. Vlad delivers big-city style for small-town prices. Make sure to tell him if you're a student to get the discount. Normally, I hate every haircut I get because the stylists never listen to what I want and then they over charge for a style that's super complicated to take care of. Vlad is a totally different story. He can even cut hair that looks good air-dried with no styling, a feat that seems beyond most other stylists I've encountered. His location in the Flat Iron building off the Damon blue line stop is really easy to get to, and I love his decor (he decorates with art done by his neighbors in the building). But the real attraction is Vlad himself. A lot of the small-talk at hair salons comes off as kind of awkward and forced, but Vlad is very easy to talk to about almost anything. He has very interesting opinions, and his stories of trips to the developing world are fascinating. Also, he seems genuinely interested in his clients; only the second time I went in for an appointment, he remembered me and some of the things we'd talked about on my first visit. The whole experience felt really personal, and was helped by the fact that only one customer is usually in the salon at once. He even lets you play your own i-tunes. First of all, Vlad has the BEST location for a hair studio in the City! He's located in the Flatiron Arts Building http://www.flatiron.tv/aboutus.html (ha! "flatiron") a historic structure devoted to promoting the ARTS. First friday of every month is open studio where you can tour the entire building and watch the artists at play (er... work). I followed Vlad from Milio's (no longer owned by Milio) because he is the very BEST. And... he's an all-around-easy-to-talk-to-really-nice-guy. He's quite the host offering you a choice of fresh espresso, beer or wine. How cool is that? And he just always knows exactly what to do with my mane. If I could I would put 10 stars! I was a little worried about such a dramatic change - cutting my hair from long to short, but Vlad did an amazing job, it came out beautiful, I couldn't be happier! I've had so many bad hair salon experiences in the past, when the stylist says "yes, yes, I understand what you want" and then cut it completely different and trying to convince you that you just don't understand what looks good, and you leave upset and never come back.. He listens to you and makes sure he fully understands what you want! He even said that he understands that it's a complete change of my style and if after I go home and feel like I would like to change something I can always call him and he will adjust. But it's already perfect as it is! I have never in my life had such a great experience with someone cutting my hair. For so many years I had to do my own hair because nearly every time I went I would spend so much money and then had to go home and fix everything they did myself because they didn't listen to what I asked. I was coming off of more than a year's worth of quarantine hair growth and decided it was time to change things up. I had just moved to town with my first pixie and was worried that I wouldn't be able to find a stylist that I liked and that could keep up with how short I like my hair without having done my hair before. I have gone to him about 4 times now and each time my hair has come out fantastic! He is even working with my on growing my hair out to more of a bob. Shaping it so that I don't end up with a mullet in the meantime. I have never had Vlad cut my hair when it was long, but in my experience with him, he truly understands how to shape and cut your hair to make it do exactly what you want it to. He will even show you how to style it and teach you the tricks of the trade! His studio is quirky and fun, so if you are looking for some posh spot with fluffy chairs and the latest magazine, this isn't it. I can't believe I haven't written a review about I'll Cut You and Vlad. After moving back from San Diego, I tried about 4 or 5 different places before I was referred to Vlad. The man knows how to cut some hair!!! Located within the art galleries of the Flat Iron Building, Vlad and his shop definitely fit right into the artistic atmosphere. His shop has character, unlike you'll find at most of the salons in the area. He'll let you choose the music and always strikes up some great conversation pieces. While I've only gotten my hair cut here (no coloring), I'm always happy with what he produces. I have longer hair for a guy, and definitely trust Vlad to keep it up to par. As long as I live in Chicago, I'll be going to I'll Cut You for all my hair needs. He even has his own shampoo!!! You really need to get your hair cut here!! I have been going to Vlad for about 5 years now, and could not be happier he opened his own shop! There are three reasons that spring to mind: 1. Vlad has superb technical skills. Ask the man about his training--Vidal Sassoon in the 80's, working in high-end hair shops since. The man knows his chops, and it shows. EVERY time I have gone to Vlad I have gotten a haircut better than I could have wanted. 2. Vlad is a heck of a fun guy to have a conversation with. Considering you will be having this conversation over a shop-brewed espresso it's a good time in addition to a good hair cut. 3. Price. The price seriously can't be beat. It's so darn reasonable I still use Vlad even though I have moved to Boston. Better still, you're supporting an independent shop rather than a big-ol' salon! I've been going to Vlad for years. First at Milio's and now at his own shop, I'll Cut You. Bucktown is incredibly inconvenient for me (I live in Rogers Park), so that is the only down side to Vlad's move to this part of town. Vlad really listens to what I want, and always gives me an outstanding cut. They grow out beautifully. He always considers my hair texture and my need to have a cut that allows for many styles (I am an actor) every visit - and the hilarious stories he tells are worth the entire trip! I haven't seen him in a while because I am growing my hair longer - but will probably schedule a trim sometime soon. He only takes cash - but is very affordable for the attention and precision you get with him. What a FUN cliche-Wicker Park (that's a good thing) stylist. I felt like I was in a movie. Or like I was in t/ Wicker Park of 5 years ago. You can take t/ old-school gated elevator (how fun!) or walk up to the third floor of the Flatiron Building (above Bank of America, sort of). Knock on door of 303. You enter what looks like an artist's studio w/ distressed, very romantic, vintage vanities. It has that cluttered look that Inner Town Pub has...not in a messy way. In the "a creative mind lives here" way. Small: maybe 10' x 25'.? Paintings from his artist friends who share t/ building are on t/ wall in random fashion. You can play your iPod, but it's so much more fun to let him introduce you to amazing bands, by letting him play his music. Not much in way of mag's. He really listens to you and what you want done. Very high quality dyes from Italy that won't freak out your hair. Very knowledgeable about hair chemicals, etc. Fascinating conversationalist (I usually hate that part about getting hair cut. I really don't care how many bros/sis's my stylist has.) b/c he travels, is into music/movies/books, etc. I paid $125 for cut and a very difficult dye job that had to be done 3 times.
