The Illinois Beach Hotel can be best described as I left hungry after my three day stay. The hotel is quite beautiful and I can see why it would be a good place to get married. The common areas are tailored to big events because they are large and give off a Summer beach resort vibe everywhere you look. But the rooms are dated and need to be modernized. The gym was surprisingly massive (bigger than all gyms that I have seen before) but I quickly realized that this might be a gym local community uses. They have personal trainers, gym classes, and more equipment you might see at any other hotel. I got in a few good workouts over my stay. The pool looks like it is in the center of the Amazon. It us surrounded by a mix of big and small plants. The pool area was massive which you can imagine looks beautiful with all the plants that surrounded the pool. But let's get to why I left hungry after having three meals a day. Every meal worst than the next. I am unsure if they are trying to save on food prices but I was disappointed with the quality that came out the kitchen. I had to give up on the meals and snacks when the popcorn they served was beyond stale. It tasted like they had let it sit out for days and made extreme attempts not to let salt touch the popcorn. I would only visit this hotel again if I brought my own food for the weekend.

Lobby, gift shop, restaurant, bar, pool under construction (done soon they say).

We were pleasantly surprised. We were here pre pandemic and don't remember much so it must have been lackluster. But now it's sharp and clean. The rooms have been remodeled with new mattresses and a fridge and microwave, none of the latter two mentioned on the website. The pool is being redone and we were told it should be done soon, so we're thinking of returning in the fall or winter when we can take advantage of it. There are fire pits for burning wood on the lawn and there is a patio with propane powered fire pits for sitting around in the evening. One of our group got a lake view room which has a small balcony with two chairs....very nice. She complained about the mattress being too soft so maybe some rooms have older mattresses. The restaurant looks nice, we plan on going tonight when the special is prime rib. They serve lunch and dinner and Saturday and Sunday they serve breakfast ...a buffet (that also wasn't mentioned on the website). Nice tv in the rooms with lots of kiddy channels and really odd programs like "car repairs with Jenny" or something. Bathtub/shower. Not enough hangers in the closets. Little coffee maker that makes a single cup...pods. Great experience...coming back. N the

This is a really wonderful, relaxing place to stay located right on Lake Michigan about halfway between Chicago and Milwaukee. It is a very affordable "beach" place if you want to just chill out and relax. It's located in a state park/nature reserve kind of in the middle of nowhere. There are trails and free bikes which is really nice. There are lounge chairs for sunning but no umbrellas. The resort itself is a 3 story hotel that has been completely renovated so ignore previous posts about it being dirty and dated. The rooms are very nice, very clean, and attractive. The receptionist upgraded us to a lake view room when we checked in and gave us a 10% discount on the first night for joining the Best Western rewards club. Also gave us free bottled water and granola bars. It is pet-friendly. The room had 2 queen beds, fridge, microwave and coffee maker. Beautiful view of the lake. They have Direct TV and HBO. Internet reception is slow but eventually comes through. There is a rather middle of the road restaurant which we are at only once because food was bland. There are several small restaurants nearby that were good. (One, El Rey Del Pollo Asada, was incredible for grilled chicken!) There's a bar in the resort and 24/7 coffee that is quite good. We drove up to Milwaukee for a day to see the art museum and a Brewer's game. Another day went to Racine to see the famous Johnson Wax HQ designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. So it's a great location for day trips. And of course there's Chicago. Staff SUPER FRIENDLY and always greeting with a friendly hello. There's an amazing gym, hot tub and Olympic sized pool included. A serious fitness place unlike most hotels. We ended up extending our stay from 3 nights to 4 because we enjoyed it so much. It has a heavy weekend wedding business and I hear it gets noisy so recommend doing weekdays like we did.

Beautiful atmosphere and view. Customer service is awesome and I get to wake up to this beautiful view Bartenders are sweet as pie Can't wait to watch the sunrise

What a gem we found when I decided to book this place for me and my moms stay for my nephews Navy Bootcamp Graduation. Showed up late on a Thursday night and the bar/restaurant were closed but Letty the sweet lady working that night talked the chefs and we were able to get food and drinks. Gina and Joey are awesome as well behind the bar and all food we ate was delicious. This place has a huge indoor pool that is heated at 80* and the jacuzzi was hot. They have a sauna and big gym that I didn't use. Lots of parking and everyone and I mean everyone was very nice/friendly and helpful. The room was a nice size with comfy beds. Our only disappointment was the time of year we had to come. Only because it was -6 and covered with snow all over the patio and beach. But very beautiful. Would love to come back in spring or summer or even winter again. Thank you all who made me and especially my mom feel welcomed.

Wow! Came across…read morethis hotel and thought it'd be worth trying something different. This is not your normal, cookie cutter hotel! The details in decor, the warmth and ambiance really creates an enjoyable experience. Other hotels are very sterile feeling, but this has small details that just make you say, wow! A kitchenette, stocked with dishes, bowls, pots & pans, a Keurig, 2 K-Cups. A dishwasher, microwave, 2 top Electric stove, sink with a small table and 2 chairs. Apartment size fridge too. Working fireplace, bookshelf with a small collection of books, huge closet, large daybed/couch and queen size bed. Bathroom is huge too. Very clean, stocked with toiletries and fresh towels. Two things I'd suggest; add more lighting, and a bedside table or two with capabilities to plug in cell phone or other items. Otherwise, definitely need to visit this Inn in Zion! Check out the pictures. Happy travels!

It is completely offensive this place so proudly proclaims itself a women run hotel…read more Why? Because it is the worst run hotel for a hundred miles in any direction. Without getting into all the small things like only having two towels in a double occupancy when we all know someone's going to need to wrap their hair, like entertainment equipment so poorly cared for you're jiggling HDMI cables like it's a set of rabbit ears from 1978... They make you sign a form indicating quiet hours begin at 10p & then host private parties in the ball room which run until 11p with amplified music you can hear three floors away. Never mind the women they hire are precisely the sort which make it impossible for other women to be taken seriously in the work place because they're under trained, apprehensive, poorly spoken, surly, unable to make decisions, speak in a full voice with confidence in the knowledge of what they're saying... We've put up with the place for a few years now because they landed the Bristol Fair package deal & we really want shuttle service to & from an event involving alcohol, but at this point, I'd rather walk the two and a half miles from the fair to the Double Tree than put up with this place one more night.

We originally visited in early November 2015 and were blown away with the natural beauty of this place. We had looked at a couple of banquet hall/hotel like places before that I had not liked at all. I knew this was THE place the minute we stepped into the rustic restaurant for our meeting! Some highlights: 1. Location: Thunderhawk is rustic and beautiful! The patio is green and well kept and reception hall is equally beautiful with high ceilings and wood beams. They have a double sided fireplace at the entrance to the reception hall which makes for a perfectly cozy spot for a fall wedding and a great blank canvas for welcome decor during the warmer months. They keep Christmas lights outside which makes the outside beautiful once the sun goes down. The lighting in the reception hall is beautiful and warm! No need for purchasing or renting string lights or other lighting! It felt like we needed to do very little to make the space look great and provided the perfect casual elegance we were looking for. We ended up with our ceremony outside, but honestly I would have been equally happy with the ceremony inside, if the weather required it! 2. Planning: Planning with Jody was by far the easiest and most enjoyable thing about wedding planning. She was laid back, extremely helpful, and always prompt with estimates, answers to questions, etc. She was so incredibly accommodating at every point of the planning (food tasting, linens, coordinating decor pickup). We left every meeting raving to each other about how wonderfully easy and fun the process was! She is truly talented and a joy to work with! 3. Service: Thunderhawk was no less attentive and accommodating on the day of our ceremony. While other places allot you about 2 hours before the ceremony for set up, Thunderhawk let us come a few hours the day before to set up, because they did not have another event on that Friday. They had the linens and other included decor beautifully done. This made the day of the wedding so much more relaxing. They used my aisle decor to decorate outside after the ceremony and made my husband and I a plate of appetizers and put it at our table so that we could have a taste of everything! We were able to pick up all of our items the day after, so no worries about packing up the car on the wedding night! ...just a few examples of so many thoughtful, little details!!! If there were hiccups throughout the night, I was completely unaware! I only heard raving reviews from the guests. I LOVED EVERY BIT OF IT! 4. Pricing: The pricing per plate is very reasonable and there are no hidden prices, like many other venues. They have basic options with available upgrades. You are able to pick and choose add ons/upgrades quite easily. NO pressure to upgrade. When we got our final bill, there were no surprises. 5. Food: We got so many compliments about the food at our wedding! Chef Ann is truly talented! We were able to taste several entree options at a private tasting and tasted all of the appetizer options at a tasting open house. Everything was delicious! We particularly loved the Parisian salad, pecan chicken, and spinach lasagna! The gnocchi and carved sirloin were also very good! Several of our guests had allergies and they were more than happy to accommodate these! Everything was so easy and fun! The servers were incredibly attentive and kind. Simply wonderful people. I could go on and on, but I will end with saying that this is truly a hidden gem of Lake County! I can not more strongly recommend researching this place for your wedding, shower or corporate event! Thank you, Thunderthawk team for making my wedding day so beautiful and carefree! I truly got to enjoy and savor the day because of your hard work! Tips: The bathroom baskets were totally worth the cost and, in my opinion, would be more expensive if you DIY. Again, several compliments about these from guests! The fall dates seemed to fill up faster than summer dates, so make sure to contact them relatively early if you have your heart set on a fall wedding.
