Cute little restaurants (outside, NO AC) with a small patio, a small menu, and small prices! We loved the fish tacos the most. We are planning on coming back for breakfast. The owners are very sweet (women owned small business). The portions of sides (rice, beans, avo) are small, but the fish tacos came with 4 tacos full of fried fish- yum! You can take it to go too. Not sure if you can drive all the way there, pass all the security and stuff without paying to go pick it up, though I might try and will report back. The area is very very touristy and not at all where I could go to swim, but I will suck it up and come back to eat at Imelda's! read more

When my wife and I travel to Mexico, we are somewhat obsessed with finding the cheapest, friendliest, best plate of food that we can find. We typically look for loncherías and when we find one we like, keep going back to it. Imelda's was a great find. Like the typical lonchería, she is open for late breakfast and lunch, but once a week, on Fridays, she stays open for dinner. Lunch was great. Our friends ordered the fish tacos - unlike all the other plates that were good for one person, I think two people could split the fish tacos. They were huge. The breading was light and the fish delicious. Our other friend ordered the fajitas and enjoyed her meal. My wife had the mole enchiladas, the mole was a bit runny but had good flavor. I ordered the filete de pescado al mojo de ajo. My plate was a bit on the small side for me. I enjoyed the food but ordered a second plate of grilled pork with onions to finish. The service was very friendly and the atmosphere was typical lonchería - plastic tables and chairs in the gravel. We decided to come back for dinner Friday because they had a local delicacy, cochinita pibil, on the menu. This is similar to Kailua pork, it is cooked underground overnight. It was delicious, it comes in a super cute little crock with rice, beans, tortillas and homemade hot sauce. If you are looking for an authentic, local eating experience, I would recommend this place to try. read more

With all the choices around the area, this authentic spot was wonderful for breakfast. 4 of us went twice! We tasted the fruit plate, chorizo and eggs, pancakes, eggs ranchero, eggs Mexicana..fresh orange juice and coffee. All of it was fantastic. Takes a minute to get your food so you Americans take a moment to relax and have some more chips and salsa/pepper sauce. everything is made fresh and there is a single cook. The salsa/pepper sauce is wonderful! Someone helped her bottle it and that person was very smart! I bought 4 bottles. It's just yummy! read more

This is a charming little outdoor restaurant in Akumal hosted by Ms. Imelda. She provides simple but excellent food. We had breakfast here and came back the next day for more. We enjoyed the chorizo and eggs, yogurt and fruit. The tostada's are excellent and so are the pancakes. Imelda also puts together a great huevos rancheros. Everything we had was really good. Imelda's speaks excellent English and is very friendly. We picked up some of her bottled hot sauce for gifts. Delicious. read more

It's been two years since I've been to Imelda's and my boyfriend and I still talk of her mole, empanadas, and most memorable- her stories and her kindness. We went 3 days in a row. Quaint, homey little restaurant off the beaten path. They really put you in the Caribbean state of mind. Food is cooked to order and brought to your table when it's done. We ate four meals here in 8 days and no one had a complaint. The fruit plate is even spectacular. The waffles are uniquely good. But, for me, I could eat that Mayan sandwich every single day. Omg. Do you want simple but amazing home cooked Mexican food? This is the place to go. We visited for lunch. It's a super small and quaint little restaurant but oh so worth it. The staff speaks Spanish only, but the menu is in both English and Spanish and you can easily order. I highly recommend the enchiladas as it's easily the best enchilada sauce I've ever had ever. This is a little gem tucked on a side street is fantastic. The food is top notch and super cheap. We had the chorizo and cheese omelette and huevos rancheros. Both were fantastic. We had a couple of coffees as well. Imelda was kind enough to give us a couple of fruits for our baby as well and didn't charge us the whole amount for a fruit plate. Our entire meal was 200 pesos. This place is amazing!!!! Imelda is so kind and generous and a damn fine cook! The location is a bit off the beaten path, but not by much. Amazing juices! Beets that were so good that I had to ask for the recipe, which she gave me. :) Meat was always juicy and flavorful. Salsa very spicy so you only need to use a little to get a good kick. Sweet, simple cakes for dessert. The last night that we were in Akumal, she even had her family come and perform traditional dances during dinner. What a lovely little gem! I highly recommend a visit if you want a break from the touristy restaurants. read more

This restaurant is amazing if you want authentic home cooked Mexico cuisine at very reasonable prices. We went today for breakfast and had wonderful tostadas as well as scrambled eggs Mexicano. We were so pleased with the food quality and the friendly welcoming feel from the family run establishment. This restaurant is a major find! Where else can you get delicious, authentic local cuisine at the same prices you would expect in the Pueblo? The enchiladas de pollo (with a mole sauce) are amazing! The fajitas de res are good too. The idea of a great lunch with rice and beans for 95 pesos blows me away. So walk behind the basketball court and look for Imelda's. The service is wonderful and the food terrific. There is a reason they have been in business here in Akumal for 23 years: it is great value! read more

We asked the locals for a good lunch place and they directed us here. They have a number of fajitas and tacos. We had the beef fajitas, which was great. It's also run by a cute mother-daughter who helped us greatly with our broken Spanish. The daughter also speaks English. It's pretty cheap but cash only. Definitely worth a try if you're in Akumal. read more
