I absolutely love this store and the staff is exceptionally helpful and friendly! I don't get to the store often enough, but when I do I am always amazed by their selection to choose from. A pretty good board game store in the Valley. Their general selection of games is their biggest strength--if you're looking for a specific title in the last five years or so, they'll likely have it. Otherwise, I've found that the staff isn't terribly knowledgeable about new releases, and they don't often stock new releases immediately (it seems like it can take a few weeks to get copies in). Perhaps the staff is more knowledgeable about MTG or miniatures? (Both seem well stocked here, but they really aren't my thing.) Either way, it's a minor quibble. The very late hours on Friday and Saturday make this a great place to stop by if you need something last minute! read more

I have a hard time believing there is a better board game store in existence. If there is I certainly haven't found it. What I feel sets this place apart *for me* is the huge gaming area for your group to play in for free. Choose a game from their very extensive game library, or bring in a game of your own. The staff is VERY knowledgeable and personable. Great people working there. The clientele is also a friendly bunch of board game and RPG enthusiasts. Solo gamers shouldn't have a hard time finding a game to join on the family game nights at Imperial Outpost Games. The selection of games to buy is top notch, and if they don't have it they will work to get it for you. Again, they are great people, and know service is what sells at brick and mortar game stores these days. I can't think of anyway this store could be better. I decided to hit up some game shops while I was on vacation and I'm glad I stopped in! The guy behind the counter was super nice and helpful even though they didn't carry what I was initially looking for. I found a couple of other things to purchase though, so I was happy! I really liked the atmosphere. I never felt like i was being watched or pressured like i have at some game shops. It was laid back and there was a large separate gaming area. They had a great selection of board games, deck building/ living card games, miniatures and pen and paper stuff like Pathfinder and DnD. I wish I would have found this place sooner. It's three parts in one. It's one part game store, one part table top playing area and one part miniature painting center. I was introduced to this place by Jamie from Do Better Gaming. A group of women were given a closed off area to learn how to plan Dungeons and Dragons. It was a great first exposure to Imperial Outpost Games. They have great snacks available for purchase, and two bathrooms. They have a huge game library to borrow, and play any time you want. Just received the most unprofessional customer service I have ever received in my life--far exceeding the time a cashier in West Virginia told me he wouldn't serve a person of my ethnicity (because he thought I was a Muslim). This from the store owner himself. I attempted to return a product I bought with a 20% off discount. The product was an impulse purchase I had grabbed specifically for receiving more initials toward my next card but when told I couldn't receive initials on the purchase I decided to return the product. For some reason, the store owner took this as me never intending to shop there again, and made two passive-aggressive remarks. When I pointed out that the passive-aggressive and smug attitude is something me and my friends have received on several occasions in the store when we asked for information about a product, I was met with an even worse attitude to the point he continued to make comments as I was leaving the store. I had every intention of just picking up the product at full price another time to get the initials on my second card when I walked into the store today. Yet, even if I had said I wasn't coming back, there was no conceivable reason for the owner to go out of his way to ensure that it remained true. I am truly disappointed as my entire tabletop gaming collection (modest as it is) has come from this store but for whatever reason, this owner himself decided to ensure I would never come back. I realized that I haven't reviewed this place, and I am amazed that it does not have a perfect 5-star rating. 4.X/5.0 does not do this store justice. I have been a patron of Darren's since the Waterloo days, and remember him opening the first Imperial Outpost Games location off Cactus next to Sardellas. Seems like a lifetime ago. What makes the store so great is the selection of events, the crowd that frequents the store, and the selection. They don't order only the stuff that will sell quickly, they order things for the depth and breadth of selection. Some games might fly off the shelf, and other's might sit there untouched for years.....either way, they probably have it in stock. There is so much to do and absorb in this store that it just couldn't be contained within four walls, luckily I think it's now contained withing 12 walls. read more

This is a specialist store: they do tabletop, role playing, and painting (And more, but this is the bulk). I have had interactions now on several occasions and have always found that the staff are incredibly knowledgeable about these games, they're players themselves, and they are more than willing to explain things. While I'm looking at different products, I'll listen to what other people are asking of staff to see if they make any good points and I felt that they handled non gamers really well. If a parent/significant other was coming in for their loved one and wanted to pick out something for a special occasion, the staff was able to draw out the information they needed without "geeky terminology" and narrow down what to purchase. They also honor veterans by giving a 10% discount if you have any sort of ID. They have a card system to get someone 10% off of a purchase, but I'm not sure how that one works, I've not used it. read more

My wife and I stopped in here to find a new game while traveling in the area. Imperial has a great diverse selection to appeal to a wide-range of tabletop players. We are primarily board gamers so we spent all of our time checking out the board game selection. The staff walked us through their board game library and helped us pick out some games to try based on our preferences. We went back to our hotel with a great game after having a really fun time. Overall, great selection and knowledgeable staff makes this place a win. read more

The selection is excellent, the diversity of games is very broad (as long as you are looking for board, roleplaying or miniatures games, they leave card games to the magic store down the road), and their open gaming space is one of the best I have seen anywhere. This store has everything a tabletop gamer could wish for, except other females. The patrons stared when I walked in, but the owner was the nicest, most helpful store owner I have ever met. Not only did he help me look for the mini I wanted (halfling), but he gave us advice on convincing our gaming group to switch from AD&D to Pathfinder, talked Munchkin with us, and was all around a fantastic guy! They are friendly to both new and old customers. The shop caters to all levels of Table Top gamers. Most of the staff of expert level painters able and willing to give advice on painting techniques. There are monthly and weekly gaming events that go on, along with open tables to gather together for a weekly DnD (or other game) dungeon run. I have played many different games on and off here for the past few years. Recently I decided to get in to painting miniatures.I started by exploring the miniature painting area of the store. That was a huge mistake. As I asked questions the man behind the counter informed me that I was in the advanced area and should go to the other side of the store. I have never felt so unwelcome. I have driven to this store every Wednesday for over a year now ... Why? Because it is awesome! Love the atmosphere and always have a table for playing Shadowrun which has turned into quite the event and grown into a role playing game that supports over 10 for every Wednesday. This place is very much a nerd store for nerds. Not that that's a bad thing. But either by nerd lore or nerd culture if they think you are noob they're not very welcoming. Jeff in the painting room was awesome. Telling me about klasa different paints and features of miniature painting that was quite helpful for someone starting out to paint miniatures. Adam on the other hand was a dingus. Apparently only interacting with other perceived nerds that could crack jokes about the strength of a thousand babies on tranquilizers. You know real original stuff. And then like I'm the registered completely self-absorbed completely not helpful or polite. I know about the stores punch card, and Adam and share the information about the punch card with the previous customer but after I spent nearly $70 with this local game store I did not even get a thank-you or have a nice day. Simply a receipt handed to me. I have no doubt this guy is definitely hurting return business in what would otherwise be a phenomenal store. Stores has a great game selection, large playing area with a tremendous selection demo copies, and a separate snack bar and painting area. So be sure to wear your taped glasses and Pocket protectors in hopes of some sort of customer service. read more

This place is perfect. I've been going for over 10 years and it's only improved. I visit once a week for Dnd night and love their variety of 28mm mini's. I highly recommend coming in on a game night just to watch people play or reserve a table. The patrons are usually really friendly and will sometimes let you join in right then and there. read more

Just started playing D&D a few months ago and I have been trying to find a steady group to play with. I've been to this store a few times before to get some supplies and the experience HAD been great till today. My last two trips there ago were awesome. One of the employees there, Adam, was really great and helpful and suggested that I show up on a Sunday when they have their D&D day to check things out which sounded like a good idea to me. I went back about two days ago cause my fiancee has been really getting into the idea of playing D&D too so we were there to check out some stuff for her and pick up one of the event calendars to see when the next D&D day was. Sure enough there was one on this Sunday for 10:30. So, I show up today at around 10:50 to check things out and get some of the D&D books for me and my fiancee ( these books are $49.99 a pop cover price in this store), I walk through the door (that was unlocked), and get greeted with a nasty look and a nasty "can I help you" from a gentleman (never got his name) walking around the store. I stood there for a moment then asked him if today was the day for D&D starting at 10:30 and he just give me another nasty look and says they aren't open and that isn't till later. I tried to apologize ( even though I had no reason to. I wasn't the one that printed out the wrong info on the store calendar) and say that I will be back later then. This gentleman in a very rude manner just grunts "well you're already here anyways so just stay" and walks away. Long story short I get to listen to him bitch to someone else about how busy he is and how he tries to come in early to get work done and cant for the next 5 minutes while I try to figure out what to do next cause at this point I have no urge to be there any longer but I also don't want this to be a complete waste of my time either. I picked out a few minis for my fiancees bard shes thinking of creating and take them up to the register to check out. I try to apologize one more time to this man (while also pointing out that on the store calendar that is right in front of him does clearly say 10:30) just to get rebuffed again. I went home and then bought all the other items I had planned on buying at the store from Amazon.com for less than half the price ( I went from planning to spend around $180ish in store to only $80 on Amazon). I don't get how some of these small shops think at times. They are already at a disadvantage cause they are selling a very niche product to a very small overall population of people that are interested in it. Then add in the Amazon (and really the overall internet) factor with the ease of use, the not having to find small places like this and the fact that 9 times out of 10 they just can't match the low prices found online. Why drive away customers that are looking to spend money in your store? Well, this one customer this gentleman will not have to worry about coming to his store to spend money in again. read more

Hands down this is the best game store in the Valley. I guarantee you will not find a better store with a better experience. The layout of the store is very large and open with tables set up in the middle and all the games along the outside. They also have books/magazines/comic books under all the games and a pretty impressive (to me) collection of all the little figurines people play games with. The selection of games is very nice. There is a little of everything and practically every expansion pack known to man can be found here. The owner is so incredibly friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable that he just makes me want to spend more and more money here (over $200 spent already!) Quite possibly the greatest thing about this store is that if they don't have a game you want, the owner will look it up and order it for you on the spot. I just love this place, but it is dangerous for us. I could never say enough positive things about it. read more

Very poor customer service. Upon opening, the person working the store unlocked the door then walked away without greeting me. I walked in he did not reply to my hello and proceeded to ignore me. I was the first and only customer for a bit. Then when I did ask a question about a game, I was spoken to rather rudely and with indifference. I really like this game store. I usually try to spend my dollars locally, no matter how tempting the Amazonian deals are out there because I truly believe it impacts our neighborhoods. This store exemplifies that. The owner is helpful and friendly. He also stayed open all New Years Eve night so young gamer nerds would have a cool, and safe, fun thing to do for the evening. For free. It was kind of like a free mini-gaming convention and it kept a lot of kids out of trouble in my hometown. Big website can't do that.
