They sell "hand raised" birds but their shop is full of "mascots" who aren't handled. They don't handle their parrots properly to keep them tame. But don't worry they'll charge you hand raised and tame prices! They sold us a disabled bird I don't think they knew was struggling because they said she was just timid. She couldn't properly use her feet. She was terrified. It took months of cage and perch changes and constant handling and exercises to get her to almost normalcy. She's an African ringneck. She needs lots of space but her tail was a nub because she was kept in a tiny cage there and when we got her home she needed perches everywhere to handle moving in a small cage. She's in a proper cage now with tons of room and has a glorious tail. She would have fallen and hurt herself constantly if we'd put her in it before. She's still very clumsy but hey...we all have drawbacks. But the fact is they either didn't know she was disabled or looked over it to charge us full price AND not tell and show us she needed extra help. I've done rescue. I've been in tons of exotic pet stores. None of them would do this. They have an amazing toy selection and there aren't a lot of pet stores in this area but don't expect a properly hand raised parrot here. Expect hand raised prices though. Because where are you going to go? Find a private breeder. There are plenty on pet adoption sites. You could do worse than this but not by much. read more

If you believe that a pet shop, or parrot shop are selling healthy birds, you need to think again. You are better off getting a bird from a bird rescue. The very first bird that I bought from In a Pickle Parrot Shop had a very bad throat infection, which I found out, as I have taken all of my birds to an avian veterinarian the same day that I get them. When I got the third bird from them, I was told several times that he wasn't weaned yet. Instead of bringing him home in November, I was finally able to bring him home in December. He had a problem with his feathers, and his back had feathers missing. My second bird, should have lived a lot longer than he did. He had several health episodes where he wouldn't eat; he was seen by a veterinarian each time. He died, after only living one third of his lifespan. Also when we bought this bird, he was afraid of many things. I don't believe that their birds are properly socialized. If they were, fear wouldn't be a factor. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS. THE PLACE IS INFESTED WITH BORNAVIRUS!!! I have purchased 5 birds at this store. 4 of them died of bornavirus (all diagnosed by my vet). The 5th one would have also died at my home, but I made sure to schedule an appointment with a vet within a day of being able to bring her home. I spent over $600 on a black capped conure all to end up with another sick bird. When I approached Paul the owner he mentioned many different things. Said he gets all babies he sells tested then said he tested the parents too. All to then say he doesn't test the parents when I arrived at the store seeking to enact my health guarantee. He doubted the report too that diagnosed her saying my avian vet was not the best and offered to have me take her to Northview Animal Hospital as if that would change the diagnoses when they had processed the results and generated a report sent directly by a laboratory. Ultimately, we decided to return the conure. Paul did return almost all my money with the exception of the sales tax I paid on her. After going back and forth (calls and visits) I was never given that money I spent. We made the decision to return the conure after having lost 4 other birds to this terrible disease. The disease attacks the digestive system of the bird, is extremely contagious and makes your bird waste away until euthanasia is the only option. Be careful! I would get the baby tested for bornavirus if you still decide to buy here. Otherwise avoid at all costs. The babies are not tested and they must be doing something shady with paperwork for them to want you to go to Northview and not accept the results run by an actual lab. read more

A lovely parrot shop with a variety of birds from small to large. They have quite a selection of baby birds - if you're in the market, there's plenty to choose from! They also have wait lists if you don't see what you want. The nursery room had babies that were still being handfed - so adorable! I loved this place. My daughter researched getting a bird for over a year. We visited this place and she picked out a baby she fell in love with. We then visited her baby pineapple conure for the next 6 weeks in the store until Riko was totally done being hand fed. In the mean time, I fell in love with a Caique there. So now we have two birds at home and they are so friendly and easy to train because In a Pickle did a great job raising them. Great Bird Store! I bought my beautiful Macaw here almost eight years ago. The owner, Paul is an avid bird lover and incredibly knowledgeable. The nursery is exceptional, and customers can watch the babies thru the glass. The birds are raised on site. If you don't see what you want, you can be put on a waiting list. In addition, they offer boarding services so my big boy can go to "bird camp" whenever I'm out of town. He loves seeing everyone again and I have great comfort in knowing he is well cared for. I moved from Southern California back to Cleveland and was concerned I wouldn't be able to find a place I could take my senior Cherry Headed Conure for a beak and nail trim and get quality toys and food for my "baby" (I raised him and weaned him 30 years ago and I'm quite attached to him!) I searched the internet and found this shop. . . I saw some mixed reviews but needed to get my bird in for a beak trim. THIS PLACE IS AWESOME! This review is coming from a parrot owner who's had Amazons, Toucans, and Timneh African Grays, and who had an abundance of exotic bird store at my disposal in Southern California!!! This place is wonderful and I felt welcomed the minute I walked in the door!! The shop is spotless, the selection of Parrots ample, their cages are immaculate and the customer service, exceptional! I had a 2:00 pm appointment to get my bird's beak trimmed and toenails clipped. As a senior bird, his beak grows kinda weird and he needs special attention and knowledge about how to trim his beak. The gentleman that did the work did a super job on the beak and feet. I'm very satisfied! The women that worked on the floor were super helpful and friendly. I so enjoyed chatting with them about birds! One of them also has a conure so we had that in common. Of course, while I waited I did some shopping for some new bird toys, different food and maybe a new birdie bed for my conure. I found a wonderful and varied selection of toys for all types of bird sizes. . .from canary to large Macaws and every size in between, they had toys and a broad selection of food and other accessories! By the time I was done, my bird had a new bed, more toys and some new food to try! I am so happy I found this shop!! Whatever size or type of bird you have, I recommend you check out this place! In April when my beloved my beloved African Grey passed I began searching for another. After looking for 6 weeks in home state of Michigan. None were available and wouldn't be until fall. I then began looking in neighboring states and found In A Pickle Parrot Shop. A week after four Greys became available of which I put a deposit on one. A month later I was on my way to pick her. Her price was extremely reasonable as are the prices on all their other parrots. Squeak is a joy and the eight hour round trip was time well spent. If I'm ever in the market for another parrot I'll be going to IAPPS and you should too. read more

I had a vet appointment around 11:20 am, but stopped closed this store to buy a harness to my bird. I noticed that the door was open before 11;00 am and decided to enter to the store. A Lady open her mouth and told to an employee that why she left the door open, and then she look at me and said that the cash register will be availble after 11 AM. She was rude with her employyes and with me. I felt uncomfortable. read more

The staff is amazing and knowledgeable. I've got three birds, all from here. The owner Paul is compassionate and knows SO much about parrots. He's awesome! The rest of the staff are talkative, friendly, and every time I go in the place I get a smile. The "house parrots" (not for sale) are super awesome too. Jimmy and Willow are my favorites. A lot of people complain about the price of the birds but they need to be higher so that people know what they're getting into when they're buying a parrot. They're a lot of work and most people think they're just a fun thing. Even the little ones are a lot of work. So the pricing is high to keep people from impulse buying. It's also quite competitive with other breeders. Pet stores are always going to be cheaper because they breed en mass and don't care about the quality of the animal. It actually protects the birds and I really am okay with paying more because of that. Most people don't understand the work that goes into keeping a parrot. All of the birds are hand raised and they have a little nursery in the back that you can look through glass and see all the babies. I practically lived in the shop when I was waiting on one of my birds to wean and I have never seen staff be as helpful and friendly as they are. I had to wait an extra month to take home one of my babies because she wasn't weaning properly and they didn't want to send her home without making sure she was on solid food 100%. I was okay with waiting because they cared about my bird. They wanted to make sure she was healthy before they gave her to me. It's all about the birds and the shop and it shows! This place is the best! They only carry the best food and treats, and have the largest selection of toys anywhere! I had an African Grey at the time I found the store and was so impressed by the quality of care for their babies, we ended up with an umbrella cockatoo from them! We're in the process of getting a hyacinth macaw from them as well. The owners Jeanie and Paul are so super nice and very willing to help their customers. I walk in and am always greeted by my first name. They always ask about my birds and fawn over them when I bring them in for a grooming. I can't recommend this bird store highly enough. The best part is the viewing window into the baby room. You can walk up and watch the babies that are weaning right from there! They don't sell babies until they're weaned (which is great) and anyone who buys a baby can visit and get to know their baby during the weaning. I can't tell you how many times I've gone in there to find an owner on the floor bonding with their weaning baby! It's really wonderful to see! Edit: June 2013 Well, we didn't end up getting a hyacinth because of legislation that had passed last year. Jeanie and Paul really tried for us though!! We ended up with a beautiful greenwing macaw baby that we are thrilled with! I visited him all through his weaning process and really got to bond with him before he came home. He turned out to be an amazing little (big) guy! Super sweet and an amazing mimicker/talker for only being a year. He's not a biter, instead he pushes a hand away with his claws when he doesn't want to be touched. He has great manners! He was also vetted by Dr. Lindstrom from Animal Clinic Northview throughout his weaning. All Pickle babies are vetted through Dr. L and I take all my FIDS to him as well. He's a wonderful vet, one of the best in the area in my opinion!! We also purchased a cockatiel and parakeet from Pickle and they're just the friendliest little birds! More evidence in how well they raise their birdies. Many parakeets are shy but Doc is great! He loves perching on my shoulder! OH! And Pickle moved down a couple storefronts and made their store WAY bigger! Tons more toys and an even bigger selection of cages and food! Can't recommend this place enough! read more

DON'T TRUST THESE PEOPLE! THEY ARE CROOKS! If I could give zero stars than I would. They were the only bird shop within driving distance that had the specific Amazon that I wanted. I told them that I lived 3 1/2 hours away and that I was going to come and pick up the bird. They must've figured that I was desperate so they raised the price of the bird $500 more than they had originally said. Over the phone they told me they would give me a hatch certificate and told me the bird's hatch date. When we got there, they told us a different hatch date and claimed to have mis-placed the hatch certificate. They pretended to dig through some files then told me that they could not find her paperwork and that they would mail it to me. Two weeks later I called them back to check on the status of the paperwork and certificate, now that they had my money, they were VERY RUDE! They still never mailed me anything so I paid over $2000 for a bird and got no hatch certificate or any paperwork at all! I would NOT RECOMMEND that anyone do business with these crooks! read more

I purchased a Solomon Island Eclectus from this shop 6 months ago. I fell in love with the breed after seeing a pair at a bird show (the breeder did not have any babies available however). I did some research and came across this shop and was thrilled to find that they had exactly what I was looking for, hand-weaned, and at a grand price (compared to what I had found otherwise). I was extremely taken back when I arrived at the store and was (not) greeted by the store owner who rather, seemed annoyed that I was there. Nonetheless, I was on a mission. Sure enough, I fell in love with the parrot that I had seen online and took it home two days later after placing a deposit. I spent roughly two thousand dollars, between the bird, its cage, food, toys, and supplements. The owner of the store, an elderly woman with gray hair and glasses, was extremely reserved, very unwilling to share any information, got snippy with me at one point when I asked if I could hold the bird for the first time, demanding to know if I had sanitized my hands and needed my "credentials" on bird handling experience. I purchased my bird simply because the bird and I bonded so well that I felt like it was just meant to be, but I was extraordinarily taken back by the sheer rudeness and brazen lack of personality coming from the woman who owned the shop. Six months later I figured that perhaps I had caught this woman on a bad day and gave her business another visit. I am big on supporting local business owners, especially in a day of large chain store operations with poor customer service. I scheduled an appointment with this shop, to have our parrots wings clipped and purchase more feed. The woman treated me the same way that she did the first time that I patronized her shop. Two younger men took my bird into a back room and I then inquired if my children could hold a bird that they had been looking at. She told them "not until your bird is done with its wing trimming" (um, okay). I tried to talk to her about proper diet for my parrot and what to expect with molting. She was again very limited with the knowledge that she shared and did not crack a smile at any point, or show any signs of pleasantries until we cashed out. She actually responded to me at one point with "well you can go online and Google it...". I browsed the store for items such as more food and toys and found them to be at least 20% higher than Foster & Smith, and even the Pet Supplies Plus up the street.This shop charges $28 for wing, beak, and nail trimming. Pet Supplies Plus charges $20. I would gladly pay more to support a local business, if the owner of the business didnt come across as being on permenant PMS. I asked the woman if she remembered us from when we purchased our sweet baby from her 6 months ago and her response was "We sell so many of that kind of bird that it's difficult to remember anyone". This woman apparently doesnt understand that the product(s) that she sells are a "want" item versus a "need" item. In a shaky economy she will not survive with an ice cold, abrasive, and frankly rude demeanor towards visitors and customers in her store. I will absolutely never spend another dime in that woman's etablishment, I won't even consider it. I was also told to never go to bird shows because they are crawling with diseases and sick birds. This woman doesnt know that 6 years ago I purchased a very healthy baby Quaker parrot and all of his accessories from a bird show, that I attend them whenever I am able, to purchase more toys and feed. I do this because bird shows have hand raised birds, and everything that the bird could need, for arguably the best price. I do not reccomend this shop, to anyone. While I have not personally met Jeani and Paul, I have had a business relationship with In a pickle for 2 years. They have always been professional and courteous and ALWAYS have the best interests of the birds at heart. They will not sell your typical CRAP foods/accessories just to make a sale and their supplies are high end. They will help you with your birds/questions whether you purchased your birds from them or not. The integrity of a business and their owners should be reviewed per it's business conduct per personal experience and not on idle gossip of someone that appears to be disgruntled. I purchase supplies from In a Pickle on a regular basis with no issues and I can also tell you they are right on top of food recall situations which is extremely important. Couldn't be more impressed with an establishment. I was in dire straights, ready to give upon my endeavor to find the right African Grey for me. When our paths crossed I kept waiting for the bottom to fall out. Disappointed in the bird quality. My family used to visit the store on a regular basis as we love parrots and are always open to welcoming new members to our family. Over the course of the two year span we would come to the store we ended up purchasing three parrots: a parrotlet, rose breasted cockatoo, and an umbrella cockatoo. We took our seemingly healthy babies home and we're very fond of them. After about two years, the rose breasted suddenly grew very sick so she was rushed to the hospital for us to find out her liver condition was very poor, and she passed away within days. About six months later, we found our sweet little parrotlet dead in the bottom of his cage. Then about a year later, our umbrella was rushed to the vet showing the same symptoms as our other cockatoo. He also perished within days of this occurring. The vet explained that because they were all raised in the same nursery and the syringes Paul used to feed his babies were being shared that they all contracted the same disease. This was very disappointing as he runs a great business and sells many parrots that seem to be healthy. We also purchased three parrots from Pet Supplies Plus - two sun conures and a Moluccan cockatoo- during the same time frame and today all three of those birds are still perfectly healthy. Very sad considering Paul is a breeder and one would assume his parrots would be in better health condition than those purchased out of a large chain pet store. Would not wish this upon anyone!! Extremely heartbreaking and do not want this to happen to anyone else. Please don't purchase any babies from here! read more

We traveled almost an hour to this shop. We are a "family" looking for a "family" bird. We brought our two kids ages 4 and 6 with us. When we walked in we were NOT greeted by the owner of the store. The only people that spoke to us were the poor high school kids working there. I say poor kids because I could not imagine what they go through on a daily basis. The female owner was VERY RUDE and unfriendly. She spoke down to my husband on more than two occasions where it WAS NOT warranted. She was starring my husband down as he was holding the birds. The young boy told him it was okay for him to pick the birds up and she AGAIN spoke down to my husband about not being aloud to pick up the birds and there were signs everywhere saying so! The worker told him he could! She is embarrassing. Don't shop here especially if you have a family! She clearly does not like children or adults. My husband wanted a certain bird there but I put my foot down and said absolutely not. I would rather eat my own vomit than give this lady any money. We went somewhere else that was kind and polite. Somewhere that didn't mind that we brought our kids and purchased a beautiful baby Green Cheek Conure. Very happy to give someone else our business that deserves it. read more

I'm not the kind of person to leave reviews, but I had to go re-download this app for this one. Some back story here, I've spent the past year or so researching and saving to buy a parrot, so today I finally decided is the day to do so. I left work early, drove almost an hour to this place, with $3000 dollars ready to drop on a bird, a cage and all the fixins. All I really needed was someone to answer a few questions to find out which bird would be the best fit for me and what toys and such to get, which I figured I could get at parrot store, but BOY I was wrong. I walk in and I immediately feel how uncomfortable the atmosphere was in there. No greeting whatsoever, just stares from the employees for a second before they went back to their tasking. I figured if I walked around for a bit someone was bound to talk to me considering I was the only customer in the store, but once again, I was wrong. I suppose I could have approached them but why would I? They all seemed so unfriendly. The only acknowledgement of my existence from the employees in the 20 grueling minutes I spent in this hellscape was the aggressive glares from the woman working from across the store. I felt like I was intruding the entire time. I am just shocked by how truly terrible their customer service is. So in conclusion, don't go here. Don't work a customer service job if you don't have the social capability to even say hello to another person, or, god forbid, ask a customer if they need any assistance. One star is still too generous. I guess I'll just have to find someone else to give my money to! read more

I have been remiss in writing this review and wanted to share our experience. We have boarded our Cockatoo, Cuddles, here for several years now. He always gets excellent care from Paul and his staff. In fact, we credit Paul for saving his life a couple of years ago when we boarded Cuddles to go to Florida. A member of his staff was caring for the birds after hours and noticed that Cuddles did not look right. They called Paul who immediately went in to check on him. Cuddles was very sick, it was a weekend and after hours. Paul called us right away and said he wanted to take him to his house and put him in his incubator to keep him warm. Paul called us several times to keep us apprised of his condition. When our Vet opened, Paul took him in for us. Cuddles pulled out of it, but he is alive today because of Paul's care. Paul and his staff truly care about the birds. It is clearly not just a business for them. read more

In a Pickle Parrot Shop is the best. Please don't believe this woman Denise, she's a very angry person. They do health testing on their birds, I myself have gotten 12 babies from them & never once had any health issues. Even birds that people want rehomed are taken care of & checked out before they will recommend them to a customer.They will not sell a bird to a person without disclosing all the facts about its health & previous conditions. I have gotten 2 rehomed birds from them as well, so before Denise tells anymore lies she needs to get her facts straight. I have even called Paul, one of the owners, for assistance on how to remove a blood feather from one of my parrots. I was scared but he walked me through it & thank God he did because my bird could have bled out. I would never buy a bird from anyone else....that goes for cages, food etc. These people are very caring people who love their birds & they will bend over backwards to make sure you're happy. BTW, Jeani is not rude, she's very concerned when people come in & they're not handling the birds correctly or sticking their fingers in cages. If it was my shop I would say something to these people too, but I will say it again, Jeani is not rude, she's just concerned for the birds safety as well as the customers' safety. Ive been reading thies reviews and I have to say anyone who can walk into this shop and say anything bad has a problem. They work harder then any pet store ive been in to make sure their birds are taken care of and everything is clean..we got our Blue n Gold from them . We visited her n formed our bond coming in staying for hours at a time to be with our baby.. not once did they have a problem with it.. our baby is now 10 months old and any time I have a question ive called n they have been great..they will not sell a bird to anyone they feel will not take care of it properly..I love the shop n the people who work there and own it... read more

My boyfriend and I were super excited to check out In a Pickle and took an hour drive to check this place out. Parrots are definitely a huge passion for us. I have to say, the store had a decent set up. The animals looked healthy and happy, and we had so many toys, food, and treats to pick from for our babies. But, Jeani at the front desk ruined the experience for us and we won't be coming back. When we first got to the store, she inquired about our birds and we told her what we have and that we were in the process of adopting a parrotlet and wanted to add more parrots eventually and that's why we were there to look around and shop. She acted as though it was the biggest inconvenience to her that we were shopping and browsing in her store and had a very condescending attitude towards us. I did not feel an ounce of empathy/compassion/passion from her about the animals. My boyfriend and I have very well behaved and friendly animals because we spend tons of time bonding, socializing, and handling them. She offered no helpful information to us and acted like we were imbeciles when we inquired about cages and other things. We walked over to the birds and looked at all of them before I asked one of the younger workers if we were allowed to handle one of the birds and she told us yes, but that we have to ask Jeani or her husband. We decided we wanted to hold a quaker parrot before we bought our bird food and toys. The tank had a sign on it that literally said "Ask for assistance before holding". I went up to Jeani as she was just sitting at the desk not busy and said "Can we hold a quaker parrot?" As a woman myself who has worked in customer service for years, her response shocked me, and for many reasons. She said "You have to ask the other workers, but this is NOT a petting zoo. You can't just come in here and expect to hold all of our birds! Couples always bring their children in to do that and it's not a petting zoo!! They're all babies and you can't hold them." I was so taken aback that I just bought what I had and we left. I wouldn't have even bought the toys and food, but I knew my parrots would love what I picked out and their happiness is more important than giving that woman a piece of my mind and causing a scene. First of all, we were told by the younger workers and the signs that we could hold a parrot as long as it hadn't already been bought by someone else. Second, I only asked to hold one specific bird that was already with an opened tank, not all of them. For all this woman knew, we were considering adopting the parrot that we asked to hold. I could MAYBE understand her response if we just came in and automatically expected to hold birds or if we had kids with us who were running around like crazy wanting to pet all the birdies, but it was just him and I quietly shopping for our own animals. We were simply interested in the quaker parrot. That is TERRIBLE business. Your store could be the most beautiful store with the healthiest birds and the best prices, but if you don't treat your customers with RESPECT, KINDNESS, and PATIENCE, eventually your reputation is going to catch up to you and your business will fail. Customers are the ones keeping your business alive and flourished, and while some customers might be difficult, I can say with the utmost confidence that my boyfriend and I were not. If you don't feel comfortable with a customer handling one of the parrots they are interested in, there is a much more respectful and reasonable way to handle the manner. This woman should not be working at that store. I was sorely disappointed in our experience. She had such a dark cloud hanging over her head and seemed like such a miserable person. I almost pity her because there was not an ounce of light or passion in her eyes. I have been going to In A Pickle or a year. I grew up with Parrots and was looking to have some now that my own children were old enough. The store is clean, bright and full of anything and everything you need! The staff is very approachable and helpful! I have spent hours looking for the right bird. In January we put a deposit on a Blue and Gold Macaw. My family and I would visit her every weekend (and that included my two boys). I never felt in the way or anything more then welcomed! The birds are friendly, happy and healthy! Mid February we brought our baby home! I couldn't be more pleased! Jeani, Paul and all the staff are like family! They great you with a smile, ask about your birds and are always there to offer advice. In A Pickle is my first stop for anything bird related! This past May I bought another bird from them. I was in this store multiple times and was ignored. I physically had to seek someone out to get an answer.The lady that sits at the desk never moves and acts as if it takes effort to say hello. Her attitude suggests that she would be better off with a job in a funeral home. The owner acts like he is gods gift to the bird world. Even if he decides to grace you with his presence he acts like you are wasting his time. I set out to buy an eclectus from them but aside from his pricing is beyond outrageous. In order for his cost to go down he should start to breed the birds himself. As of now, this shop is nothing more than a "middle man" for a real breeder. Furthermore, I don't need to be treated like I am an inconvenience (business must be that good) Today, I got upset and said something to the woman at the desk. She told me that I am nasty and to never come back again. These people need a seminar on customer service and business etiquette. read more
