Since the storyline revolves around a traffic accident, I was expecting something dark and Arthur Miller-like, but I was very much mistaken. "Next Fall" turned out to be a smartly written, humorous show with interesting characters, events, and dialogue. The conversations flow quickly with wit and lightness. A hilarious scene was when Luke, a gay man not yet out to his parents, was rushing to hide his purple Teletubby plush toy in an effort to gay-proof his apartment for his dad's visit. The play is endearing, and I highly recommend it to anyone for a nice theater experience. Ladies, for once, the restroom line is in our favor. With so many gay couples seeing the show, there is hardly a wait for the ladies' room during intermission. Student rush tickets are subject to availability (basically, not guaranteed for every show), could be partial view, and are sold two hours prior to the show. This revival of Ossie Davis' comedy of the same name is a wonderful, energetic show that audiences of all demographics will enjoy. Despite the fact that the original show was hailed and experienced by celebrities including Martin Luther King, Jr. Malcolm X and Eleanor Roosevelt, the current cast manages to tell this story of the 1950's south in a way that still resonates in today's world. This comedy set on a southern plantation is full of energy, jokes and the cast comes out swinging from the opening. The whole cast is amazing. However, Kara Young's performance is an unexpected gem that only gets better over the course of the show. Her timing and portrayal of Lutiebelle is phenomenal. While playing a character that was initially played by legendary actress Ruby Dee is a daunting task, Young's performance will surely have her nominated for awards. There is no dead spot with this cast and Odom is phenomenal, but her performance lifts the show in a way that is remarkable to witness. Billy Eugene Jones holds his own as Gitow Judson and provides comedic relief as the show's storyline explores the internal struggle of a favored hard working cotton picker. The entire cast effortlessly combines to make Purlie Victorious a sensational comedy! The storyline follows the original script pretty well with some comedic and timely adaptations. Purlie Victorious Judson (Leslie Odom, Jr.), a young preacher with a colorful back story, goes home to reclaim his inheritance and his church and finds out that life is what happens when you make plans. He attempts to convince Ol' Cap'n Cotchipee (Jay O. Sanders), a white plantation owner, that Lutiebell (Kara Young), a junior choir girl from a distant locale, is really his deceased Cousin Bee, the rightful heir to funds needed to reclaim his church. He enlists family members Missy Judson (Heather Alicia Simms) and Gitlow Judson (Billy Eugene Jones) in a plot to obtain what they feel they are rightfully owed. The plot twists bring comedy, the Sheriff (Bill Timoney) and his Deputy (Kara Young). Cap'n Cotchipee's son Charlie Cotchipee (Noah Robbins) shows the importance of Allies and becoming your own man when the things you have to do are not popular. The influence of family employee Idella Landy (Vanessa Bell Calloway) changes Charlie in ways that will shock the other characters and the audience as they realize Purlie may not have been as Victorious as his name or representations would have suggested. I think this play ought to be required viewing for high school students. Provocative, important topics presented with no palpable resolution. Humor provided some relief from the gravitas of the themes...but left me questioning whether I should really be laughing at these things. It was a play first adapted from Yiddish stories in 1919. In 1964, the Broadway Musical was born and then in 1971, the movie. Can you imagine Broadway actors learning lines and songs in a language that they don't know. I guess it would be like an opera. This is not my first time at the Yiddish Theatre. Last year I saw The Golden Bride. In fact, I saw it twice. It is a 1923 Yiddish Operetta with music by Joseph Rumshinsky (who I happen to be related to). It was a wonderful comedy. All plays are spoken and sung in Yiddish but there are subtitles in Russian and English. If you have a chance to go to the Folksbiene Yiddish Theatre in the Museum of Jewish Heritage, don't pass it up. Also, don't miss the Museum or the Lox Cafe.

I was singing in my seat the entire time. The story line is great, real, and raw. I would not recommend bringing children or young teens here as there is talk of rape, drug use and sex. The actors and actresses had an amazing flow, and worked well together. It was as if they have been working together for years. Such chemistry that came alive on stage. My favorite was "Jo." She has such a powerful voice, it gave me chills. Her performance of "You Outta Know" was AMAZING, and during the performance I saw, she received a standing ovation from everyone in the theater.
