I flew in and out of CID during my most recent visit to Iowa. This trip involved seeing my 97…read moreyear-old Dad in Ames, a side trip to Des Moines, and then over to Iowa City for my semiannual University of Iowa Chemical Engineering Alumni Board meeting. Compared to flying in and out of DSM, I found the amount of required driving to be pretty even. CID is an impressive small-medium airport, with modern features and nice natural light. I counted 13-14 gates, which seemed more than enough to handle existing air traffic and future expansion. I didn't notice any Southwest movement, but I did see American, Delta, United, Allegient, and Frontier business. Who's left? JetBlue? Sun Country? Alaska? I also appreciated the easy walking distance and navigation between Check-In, Security, Gates, Baggage Claim, and the Rental Car Parking Lot. This is the Airport that DSM is probably modelling as they work through their own expansion and modernization plans. TIP: Check out the gift shop for the Iowa Hawkeye Tchotchkes, with a few Caitlin Clark items thrown in. CID is definitely Back in Black.

There are only a few flights a day here, so this won't be a place you'll have a lot of flexibility in case something comes up causing you to switch, I wouldn't chance using this limited airport for a important trip that you heavily planned. I would drive to a bigger airport if you have a time sensitive trip, otherwise this airport can connect you to Chicago when needed.

I always had a great time chatting with the workers and instructors; it was more like hanging out with friends or family than walking into a business. The prices were about the best in the area. The only place that comes close to their prices is Green Castle, and the gas it would cost me to drive there and back pushes them just a bit higher than Marion.

She made sure everyone had their flights rescheduled, rentals cars for those that chose to get one, and food for the rest of the people that waited out for the fixed plane to come in. After having two trips canceled due to weather, I was finally able to book a flight home. Unfortunately, that flight was delayed by United due to mechanical issues with the plane. After 2.5 hour mechanical delay, we were finally able to board. Sadly, no one with United informed me before I boarded that the delay would mean I would miss every connecting flight out of Chicago O'Hare for the next 13 hours. That meant spending the night in the United terminal in O'Hare without food, a bed, or a ride. No worries though because United came through and made everything right. Wrong, United took no responsibility, offered only a food voucher (which was unusable at 1am in an empty and abandoned terminal) and refused to refund or compensate in any way. A three hour scheduled flight to my Midwest destination turned into an expensive, miserable 16-hour ordeal with zero accountability on United's part. Please avoid at all costs.
