Really easy airport!…read more Seamless check in and nice staff! Bathrooms are clean, chairs are very cozy and they even have an outdoor patio with a fireplace by gate 1 & 2! Never seen something like this at an airport. Not many food options but the door has a restaurant, the Java House coffee shop (which has THE BEST CHAI) and a little snack shop. You can usually get through TSA within 8 minutes or less, I have TSA precheck and get through within 3 minutes!

Compared to flying in and out of DSM, I found the amount of required driving to be pretty even. CID is an impressive small-medium airport, with modern features and nice natural light. I counted 13-14 gates, which seemed more than enough to handle existing air traffic and future expansion. I didn't notice any Southwest movement, but I did see American, Delta, United, Allegient, and Frontier business. Who's left? JetBlue? Sun Country? Alaska? I also appreciated the easy walking distance and navigation between Check-In, Security, Gates, Baggage Claim, and the Rental Car Parking Lot. This is the Airport that DSM is probably modelling as they work through their own expansion and modernization plans. TIP: Check out the gift shop for the Iowa Hawkeye Tchotchkes, with a few Caitlin Clark items thrown in. CID is definitely Back in Black.

If you're looking to learn how to fly or just want to take some rides in smaller airplanes, you can't go wrong with this airport. You can rent aircraft here, attend events, learn to fly, store your aircraft, and more. If you're curious about small aircraft, they also offer rides as well as very affordable Intro rides to give you the flying experience. (I'd say every person who has any interest in aviation should totally do an Intro ride with them - no exclusions.) The guy in charge of this airport (Jonathan) obviously cares about the airport. It doesn't seem to be just a "financial" thing with him. He really has a love for aviation, and he wants to grow the airport and other aviation lovers, and it shows. He's a fantastic teacher and extremely friendly. In fact, all of the employees were very friendly and nice. It's honestly one of the nicest small airports that I've ever been to. For pilots: the interior is really clean and comfortable. They have seating. The bathrooms are clean as well. You're less than 5 minutes away from the city of Independence AND this airport offers a FREE courtesy car. (Just call ahead). If you want to eat somewhere in town, I highly recommend Bill's in Independence. It's totally worth the flight. They have aircraft available for rental as well. Very reasonable rates - and the rates for instruction time are very reasonable as well. The aircraft are in great shape, and among pilots I've talked to, their planes are known for being well taken care-of. Unlike other airports, you can also learn acrobatic flying here as well - yay! This airport is pretty active with events as well. They offer free learning seminars, and they also have cookouts during the summer. I'm not sure if they have any particular fly-ins, but they have a really nice website that seems to be regularly updated (which again, rare with airports), so you can check out that information. The only downside is that it's kinda in the middle of nowhere when driving. You can go from the highway and go to the airport, but you'll be going through a bit of gravel. Alternatively, you can go through Independence's downtown all the way past McDonalds, and take a left. The signs WILL get you from the highway to the airport within 5 minutes if you're driving in. There are also signs if you go through the downtown area. Airports tend to need to be outside of travel areas anyway. Super duper impressed with this place. I'll go out of my way to fly and get training here instead of somewhere else.
