For our tenth wedding anniversary, it was time for a ring upgrade. Coming from California, where we had been loyal customers to a single jeweller for years, it was time to find someone new in our new forever home. It started with some simple repairs, sort of a test. I gave them a broken necklace and an heirloom bracelet in need of repair. They were quick, communicative, and did quality work, so we moved forward with my custom rings. The process of designing my dream set was better than I hoped for! I made an appointment with Linda, the daughter of the family business, and omg I ADORE her! Every design detail and curveball I threw her way she met with a "yes, and!" Euroshank? Excellent choice. Mixed metals in 14k instead of the more expensive 18k? We love durability! Lab diamond and moissanite? We're not snobs, bring on the double-refractive sparkle! It all started with choosing my center stone. Linda guided me through their supplier's inventory in a super personal process and gave me plenty of time to choose "the one". Then, I said goodbye to my current 5-year anniversary band so the stones could be integrated. Once everything was measured, it was inputted in their system for a design render. They got the engagement ring spot-on on the first try, completely understanding my vision! We went through maybe 5 different versions of bands to perfectly complement it, tweaking to my description until it was perfect. Then, they let me try the wax model and see my diamond, which was a surprisingly emotional experience. Then, with my written approval, it was time to build it. There was a tiny hiccup in sourcing the marquise-shaped moissanite stones, so they offered lab diamonds at no additional cost. But I was happy to wait the short two weeks to have them custom cut. (They were so sweet to avoid inconveniencing me and were on TOP of the communication this whole time! Linda was happy to text quick updates, which was my preference over email.) Less than 3 months after my initial appointment, my dream rings were on my finger. I cannot stop staring at them, they are so exquisite! Anthony, Linda's brother, facilitated the handoff, and he is a delightful young man with the hands of a craftsman. He removed the remaining stone from my old ring with tremendous care, which I took home for a future project. Plus he gave me very fair credit on my bill for the gold in the old setting (I didn't want it). I told them, and I meant it, that they have a customer for life. Linda told me to come by for free cleaning and inspections any time, and I will certainly take them up on that and sing their praises to anyone who asks. Took my 2.7 ct platinum engagement ring here May 8th 2015 after searching for the best ring sizing for platinum in Vancouver. I read the reviews that were all 100% positive and that quite a few people have had great results on their ring sizing. The people here are very nice and friendly but as far as their skills in re sizing platinum rings - the job they did on my ring was completely unacceptable. We waited about 2 1/2-3 hours for them to size my ring down 1/2 a size. It went from size 4 to size 3.5 When we picked up the ring - I put it on and the lady said "it's perfect right?!" And I was thinking..no..not quite. I could see a faint line from where it was cut and the area where it was cut was significantly thinner like there had been way too much filed off. I knew it wasn't right but at the same time I thought maybe that's just how it is sometimes. I was disappointed. After speaking to the reputable Jeweler in Toronto that made my custom ring. I told him about the sizing job Independent Goldsmith had done and showed him photos and he was shocked and furious. He said I had been scammed and that they had overcharged us, "forgotten" a few steps, used a torch not a laser(which is a must for platinum), didn't show us the ring under a magnifier after the job so that we'd be able to see the laser engraving on the main stone(it's rare but jewellers do swap diamonds, mostly round and Princess cut diamonds), that the band should look perfect as if it were never resized and there should not be a visible line or thinness of the band. Now, I had realized how my beautiful ring had been so badly butchered and I was realllly upset. Honestly I didn't even want to wear my ring anymore and was thinking of getting the whole band redone to remedy this mess. After a few days I decided I'd just live with these cosmetic issues on the bottom of the band until I could find a better Jeweler. About 3ish weeks after I had it sized it felt like my finger was shrinking because my ring was spinning around my finger all the time. I looked underneath and it was completely split open. The part that they cut and tried to fuse back together had come undone. I called Independent Goldsmith back and spoke with the Jeweler and he said "that doesn't happen to me very often" and I asked if he would be able to fix it and use a laser and fix the unevenness in the band. He said yes. I asked if I would be charged and he sounded hesitant but he did say he wouldn't charge me. I decided not to go back there since they couldn't do it properly the first time and found a different Jeweler in downtown Vancouver and went the next day. The difference in knowledge and professionalism was night and day. The new Jeweler saw my ring and said that it was an amateur job. They showed me the ring under a microscope and showed how Independent Goldsmith used white gold instead of platinum(bigger profit), we could see the clear colour change. They were confused as to why Independent Goldsmith cut my band more to the side and not in the middle. They showed me a badly chipped diamond in the halo and said that it's likely Independent Goldsmith chipped the diamond because it was beside the band and were probably not careful when hammering. I started wearing my ring April 13 2015. I had my ring resized with Independent Goldsmith May 8 2015 and the new Jeweller noticed the chipped diamond yesterday June 5 2015. It's not like I'd been wearing the ring for months or even a year. Even though it's a small diamond...it's still my engagement ring which is special and a VS diamond. If I go to someone that's supposed to specialize in creating, fixing/repairing jewelry I'd expect it to come back better - not worse. The new jeweller said you should never be able to see the line of where it was cut and there should never be unevenness and it should look perfect, I was overcharged and that I should go back and ask for my money and the platinum that was cut out. And they mentioned they've fixed a number of resizing jobs done by Independent Goldsmith. In the end they fixed the break and there is no line of where it was once cut - they tried their best to fix the unevenness in the band and you can now barely tell the difference in width, they polished the ring for me and it all only cost me $150 as opposed to $180 at Independent Goldsmith. I decided not to go back and get my $180 - why? I'd rather leave an accurate review of what happened to me and their skills/quality of work in re sizing platinum rings and what I had to go through instead of getting the $ back so that people will be able to make a more informed decision instead of seeing all the 100% positive reviews like I did and go there. I looked all over Vancouver and Calgary for a skilled goldsmith to resize my Cartier love men's ring in platinum. Because of the screw pattern on the ring it can be a tricky job and most places had recommended cutting a chunk out, which would result in an uneven pattern. Price wasn't a concern for me and I was simply searching for the best person to do the best job with my wedding band. Little did I know the best person to do the job was located only a few blocks from my house! Tony suggested sizing the ring with pressure. A method I had discussed with other places where they had told me it was too tricky to attempt. Tony said he has had much experience doing this in the past and expressed great confidence. The end result was perfect! It looks flawless and everything was intact! Looks showroom new... But a half size smaller! Even all of the lettering on the back remained perfect. My fiancé and I got engaged just before Christmas and his parents handed him a lovely family heirloom ring. The centre stone was his great grandmother's and sparkles like the stars. When his parents got engaged, they redesigned the ring with a matching set of wedding bands. The ring was handed down to Jeff and he proposed with this ring. Its truly lovely, however, was a but too snug for me, even in the winter. We knew we'd have to get it resized. Our engagement ring actually came with matching men's and women's wedding bands. However, we decided to get new wedding bands as the men's band was an odd shape. We purchased a very modern diamond channel wedding band for myself and thought that in a few years, we would redesign the ting to match it. We (or I should say Jeff) did some extensive research prior to deciding to go with Independent Goldsmith. After reading the reviews, we decided to visit Tony. He met with us as we showed him the ring and brought the old matching wedding bands, along with my new wedding band, just in case. We told him of our initial ask to resize the ring but also wondered if they did do custom re-designs. He looked at the ring and said that we could reuse the gold from the rings and take out the smaller stones (6 in total from the original engagement ring and wedding bands) to have a channel set design to match my new wedding band. We set out a very classic design and we shared that we wanted to keep it very simple and classic. We didn't want the setting too high and the clamps of the centre diamond to be too large. He assured us that he knows our vision. All in all he only charged the labour fee, which was quite affordable! He had given us a three week timeline at which we shared that we would have an engagement photos in two weeks. He said it wasn't a problem! We left the shop quite pleased and couldn't wait. A week goes by and finally we heard from Tony. He had sent us a rendering of the ring. We noticed that the setting was quite high and expressed our concern. He immediately called back and said not to worry about that as the rendering over compensating his final design. We came in on the Sunday to pick up our ring and was just blown away. Tony did such an amazing job and the ring matched my wedding band to a 'T'! I couldn't stop staring at it (a month later and I still get side tracked at work). The setting really accentuated the centre diamond and it sparkles even more. We are so pleased with the efforts and work of Tony's and we're so pleased. This shop has the best customer service that I think I've ever experienced. I don't usually worry that much about how I'm treated by staff who are in CS roles, because I know how exhausting, stressful and dull the work can be. However, the people who work at this shop are so outstandingly kind and helpful that it's worth mentioning. I came here to get a very fine gold chain repaired and to get my watch battery replaced. I ended up needing to get the movement in my watch cleaned after there were still issues with the second hand getting stuck after the battery replacement. The woman working the counter was very clear in advising me and gave me a sense of options and cost before ever compelling me to commit to the work I would get done. We discussed the replacement of the crystal on the watch face and she recommended that I see how the other repairs went first, to ensure that the watch could be made to function properly first. It's simple stuff, but I really felt that I was being given respectful advice. I also watched the same woman interact with an elderly lady who came in looking for a particular address, which turned out to be in the building, but required her to go on a bit of an adventure to find it. The engagement ring process is a funny thing: You save up thousands of dollars to buy something you know nothing about, you hope the girl likes it and says "yes", but most importantly, you pray she doesn't lose the giant ring you bought since you are terrible at eyeballing finger sizes. When I explained to her that she proooobably shouldn't have left her multi-thousand dollar custom-made ring in the hands of a complete stranger without verifying the serial number before and after the process, I could see the look of realization come over her face. Though it took them some time to find the inscription, the diamond was verified, they were very patient with her, made sure she was satisfied with the resizing, gave her a great price and had everything done within a couple of hours. I was anxious about getting my ring resized after reading several horror stories and decided on Independent Goldsmith based on Brian S.'s review as well as the fact that Tony was willing to resize my ring same day, while I waited. Independent Goldsmiths was previously named Elite Goldsmiths, but the previous owner moved and Tony, who had worked with the previous owner, took over. The entire process took about 45 minutes, where Tony checked the prongs on my ring to make sure the stone wasn't loose, sized my finger, and then got to work sizing it down one full size and replating it with rhodium. He charged me $45+tax, which was very, very reasonable. I'll definitely be returning if I need any servicing done on my jewelry. read more

This is an addition to an earlier review I did. Took in a necklace to just get a larger ring installed for the clasp to grab onto. The work was swift. I would just suggest that if you go in, it's preferable to deal with the older gentleman or the younger guy (who is probably his son) On this second occasion, I was serviced by the older woman who was just all business. When I patronize a small family run shop (which I always like to support), I expect to be treated like my choice is appreciated and to have a friendly greeting. She did repeatedly (3 times) ask me if I wanted to buy anything and I said no, I just wanted to get the necklace fixed. Then she asked if I needed a new ring ("Just on sale from today!"....riiiggghhhtt...), when I said No, it was "...bracelet?" then "...something for the husband?" I was getting annoyed at this persistence, especially since none of it was delivered in a warm, friendly manner. I purchased a custom made tennis bracelet online from another jeweler for my girlfriend's birthday and even after measuring her wrist it came a little bigger than she wanted. Independent Goldsmith was able to remove the extra links with absolutely no sign that it had been modified and they provided the extra bits in a bag in case she wants to use them for ear rings or something else. I bought myself this beautiful, fun, dangly necklace for $30 and broke it the second time I wore it! I assume it's gold plated but wasn't too sure if I would get disapproving looks taking my "cheap" Jewelry to a nice jewelry store in hopes of repair. I was having a hard time finding the right matching wedding band for my rose gold/morganite engagement ring. In the end I figured it would be best to just get it custom made. I found Tony through Yelp and after reading all the great reviews I decided to visit his store for a consultation. I showed Tony a picture of a ring I liked and he was able to create a unique rendition that was a perfect fit for my e-ring. Prior to placing a deposit with him, I had actually consulted 2 other jewelers in downtown (who also had great reviews on Yelp), but Tony's friendliness and unpretentiousness were what really won me over in the end. Not to mention, his prices are very reasonable for the value and excellent craftsmanship you get. Having validated parking at City Square also made the in-progress visits less of a hassle. Tony made a beautiful engagement ring for me and my fiancé. He proposed with a simple ring so we could design it together. I brought some drawings and photos from the internet and Tony created a lovely design for us. He uses a 3D CGI program on the computer so he can send pictures of the ring before it's made and even printed a 3D plastic version so I could try it on and adjust the design before the ring was made. I've had two rings re-sized here, one a family heirloom diamond ring and a casual gemstone ring. They've done great work with a quick turnaround time and I trust them with very expensive and less expensive rings. My only and major dislike have been the ladies at the front counter who you need to discuss what you need done. Both times, they would immediately inspect the ring with their magnifying glass and point out every flaw in an attempt to sell you on more work needed. Without even asking me where I got the ring or what significance it had, the lady immediately told me the ring was "cheap" and that the stones weren't nice. I didn't ask for her opinion nor did I say I wanted to change any stones. I just wanted the rings resized, simple as that. I thought it was unnecessary to say those things, especially if those rings have significance (both do as they have been passed down from loved ones who are no longer here). This place is awesome! I had a custom ring set (2 rings) resized, and as a result, the shapes also had to be modified to ensure the set fit together. I dropped my ring off this morning, and when I picked it up this afternoon, I was ecstatic! The quality and craftsmanship of the finished product is absolutely extraordinary!!! I flew in to the city from up north to have this custom work done, and not only did they do an amazing job, but they did the work in just a couple of hours. At home, I was told that my rings would have to be shipped out and that the work would take about 3-4 weeks to complete (plus shipping time). As a result, I did some research to find an actual goldsmith (one that doesn't ship jewelry away to do the work), and travelled to the city to have the work done, and am so happy I found this place.
