for 3 people, we ordered butter chicken and vindaloo (chicken option), both on a medium-hot spice level, along with two garlic naans starting off with the garlic naan, i thought it was pretty decent it wasn't hard, but certainly could've been softer. it did have a good amount of oil on it, but i only got a little bit of the garlic flavor 2 garlic naan orders came out to four half-naan pieces, which was alright but not great the rice was also fine - nothing special both curries had essentially zero spice to them at all. the butter chicken might've had negative spice, and i found the faintest hint of some on the vindaloo. in terms of overall flavor, i think the vindaloo had a few more spices and tasted slightly more authentic, but out of the two i preferred the butter chicken's taste as it was a bit more pleasing. thankfully both curries weren't super oily i did like the chicken in both curries - it was cooked well and retained some juiciness. the vindaloo especially actually had a good amount of chicken in pretty large pieces. both curries had a pretty decent protein/gravy ratio due to the lack of spiciness and 'real' flavor, i wouldn't come here if you're looking for authentic indian food, but for a facsimile to display for non-indians, it's not the worst imitation i've seen read more

I didn't know what to expect with Indian food in Blacksburg but actually had a pretty ok experience here! I came after game day and it was surprisingly quiet. I got the chicken biryani and shared some garlic and regular naan with the table. It wasn't the best I've ever had, but it was pretty good! The naan was pretty good too. My own personal main complaint would be that the servers weren't the most proactive with refilling water- they weren't very available and we had to ask. Wow we are not Indian food experts but we ordered like one tonight. Found this place my accident and it was a great accident. Ok. The cheese tandoori appetizer was tasty. Sweet. Cheese and delicious. The naan was perfect. The rice extremely tasty. My wife ordered the tasty treat. All three chicken portions were unique in flavor and tasted great. My chicken dish was again a different t but incredibly flavorful dish. If I lived here I would eat here often. The service was great and very informative. First time here and it was by mistake I was suppose to go to the other restaurant 5miles from there. Decided why not give it a try even though I rarely eat at restaurants with less than 4 star ratings. The ambience is nice a bit too bright for my liking for a restaurant and ordering was fast and easy. HOWEVER once I got my food( vegetable biryani)home and got ready to eat it was clear as day the rice was old it was NOT freshly made today!! I'm so livid ! The rice isn't cooked correctly and that's due to putting water in it to make it appear fresh to serve for another day when reheating it. As a cook myself I can spot the tricks ! Dining on 1/2/24 We ordered the Aloo Bangan with Mango Chutney, Plain Naan, and Vegetable Samosas. The food was exceptional. Definitely the best Indian I've had in the US. The consistency, spices and texture of the Samosa filling were perfect. The pastry exterior was crumbly and amazing. The Naan was fluffy, perfectly cooked and flavorful. Here's the breakdown : Location - great location near campus, walking distance to so much ! I have walked from the stadium before , and many other points of interest are super close Parking - parking is fine, located attached to some other dine in spots and businesses so parking isn't a problem at all. fyi some parking spots are on a slope . so if you have a stroller or wheel chair just be mindful of the spots you choose. Menu - great classic menu, and the option to increase or decrease spice level to test, items cooked fresh per order . buffet has been available in the past and was not today which may be due to Covid . The bar is always well stocked and lovely. Staff/service- amazing, always ideal . The staff is literally above and beyond excellent Price- mid price point, very fair for the quality and presentation/plating . My most recent order was vegetable korma and naan ( the naan was so fresh it was divine) my fellow diners both ordered chicken tikka masala and were very pleased. Casual atmosphere, lighting was perfect same with sound levels, not a super noisy place which is great for a business lunch and I have also done some work like responding to emails and taking a zoom meeting for my job while dining and it was quite pleasant . child friendly and can accommodate several size groups I will hands down recommend this location to any and all, always pleased with my experience here. read more

Hello, my name is Porush, and I reside in the Christiansburg area. I recently went here with my wife, Pooja, and I have lots to say regarding the food and service. Firstly I would like to start off by saying I had high expectations, given the price of the dishes on the menu. We realized a stain on the white cloth they provided us when we were at the table. Noticing this, we alerted the waitress, who told us there were no problems and that the napkin was still usable. After a slight quarrel, she picked up a napkin from the other table and gave it to us. As per the restaurant's atmosphere, it was empty and silent, with no music or retro Indian movies playing. When we got out Chicken 65 we were disappointed in the taste, as the citrus flavor overpowered it. The Chicken itself was cooked thoroughly but was inconsistent in texture. I would never in my life eat something like this again, especially given the high price. After this, I ordered Chicken Tikka, and Pooja ordered Chicken Briyani. After the horrid appetizer, it was a pleasant surprise that the main course wasn't awful. The chicken was cooked excellently, but it lacked taste. We ordered both of these dishes with the highest spice level, and to our disappointment, it was more creamy and mild than spicy. The main dish wasn't horrible, but again when taking into consideration the price, I would not recommend this to anyone. The price of these three dishes ended up being approximately 60 dollars, which again is way too much, especially for the quality of food they provide. Personally would never eat here again. My family and I went in for lunch buffet today. What a disappointment ! It was around 1 in the afternoon and not many customers, that should rise a red flag for me. I went ahead with the buffet, all food were dried out, there were at least 10 plus items at the buffet table (butter chicken, chicken tandoori, and other vegetarian dishes, salad, fruits, sauces). only decent item that was not dried out are the naan bread and butter chicken. Here is my take on this place. I was in town and looking for a lunch spot. I love Indian and especially Indian buffet's, where I can taste a bunch of different dishes. Unfortunately they do not have the lunch buffet anymore. But the do have a very expensive, for lunch, menu. The dishes were from $16.95 to around $32. I order one of my favorite dishes, Chana Masala, it was mediocre at best. The place was pretty clean but kinda worn out. There was only one other table of three there and three servers. Yet I had to wait for like 4 minutes after I put my menu down to order. I think if they offered a "lunch" menu they could do more business. read more

The service also needs work, servers sometimes wait randomly and don't take your order or sometimes forget to bring your food entirely. I made the mistake of going after 2 pm on a weekday. Apparently the restaurant is not open after 3:00 in preparation for the dinner service, but this was not obvious from the website, the door, or the host. The host did not speak English well, and did not communicate well. Coupled with a dismissive, rude attitude, this put me off for the overall experience. Only the buffet was available at this time, and it was obviously close to being shut down, with most items depleted. I had been looking forward to naan, but there were only dried out cut triangles available. The dishes themselves were typical Indian fare, and might have been moderate to good when they were more fresh. After about 5 minutes at my table with me food, the host unexpectedly asked me to leave, saying they were closing. I said I had not known that, and wanted to take my food - small portions, btw - with me. At first he said no, but I stated that they did not make it clear that they were closing, and I would have chosen their take-out buffet had I known, as would not pay for food I had not been given the chance to eat. He finally relented. The restaurant itself was neat and clean, with a nice atmosphere. White table cloths were set for the dinner service, and the decor was decent. I would still like to give this place a chance for a dinner, where I could order what I want, freshly cooked, especially since this is the only Indian Restaurant anywhere near where I live in rural Southwest Virginia. read more

When I'm in Northern Virginia my sister and I would normally get Indian food at least twice a month. Indian food is always so well seasoned and flavorful. One day I was craving Indian food and used my handy yelp app to find an Indian restaurant near me. To my surprise there was only 1 Indian place in Blacksburg. I saw they had a lunch buffet and had to try it out. Going in the lady was friendly and directed me to my table. The nice part was since I was getting the lunch buffet there was no need to wait and I could immediately get food. They had a large selection so I tried everything! They probably had about 10 options on their hot bar and many more on their cold bar. Overall, not including the basmati rice I only liked 3 of the items from their hot bar. The other options didn't suit my taste. My favorite items were the chicken palak curry, tandoori chicken and their naan. The chicken palak curry was very flavorful and had a nice balance of curry flavor and chicken. The tandoori chicken while slightly small in size, but was seasoned and cooked well. Lastly the naan was nice and fluffy. Overall, even though I only liked 3 of the items at their lunch buffet I would still come back because those three items were good. I suggest if you are craving Indian food to visit their lunch buffet since there are a lot of options, and you will probably find something you like. read more

Our family loves India Garden. It was the first India Restaurant in Blacksburg and we were very excited when it opened almost 20 years ago. My favorite dish is the Chicken Korma, second is the Lamb Pasanda. We had our wedding catered by India Garden and there were no leftovers. My husbands favorite dish is the Lamb Biryani. I highly recommend the vegetable pakora and the garlic naan as sides. It is significantly cheaper to go to the lunch buffet at India Garden than it is to order off the dinner menu, so go for lunch. Most recently (as we have moved away) we ordered take out over the holiday break. It was expensive for take out, but still delicious. read more

Tonight was my first time eating here. The restaurant is very quiet, clean and more upscale than I was expecting. We were greeted with a smile and seated immediately. I had never had Indian food before, so I asked our waiter to explain what some of the foods were and how to pronounce them. He was very kind and happy to help. Our food came out quickly and was INCREDIBLE. The entire staff was very friendly and kept our table clean of empty plates and water glasses full. There was also live music toward the end of our meal and it was also lovely. Soft acoustic music, not too loud to hear my dinner-mate speaking. If you are in the Blacksburg, VA area and are looking for some delicious Indian cuisine, the India Garden Restaurant is the place to be. The décor wasn't anything extraordinary, but it had a nice calming atmosphere to it. The wait staff were consistent in being hospitable and frequently checking up on us and refilling our drinks. For dinner, my wife ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and I ordered the Lamb Tikka Masala. We both agreed that hers was good, but mine was outstanding. The lamb had the charred flavor desired of any meat cooked in a tandoor oven and the spices in the tomato-cream sauce were perfect. This is a dish we will both be ordering again when we return. The Garlic Naan was sensational as well and is excellent when dipped in the Tikka Masala gravy. I do not think there is much more I can say except to go to India Garden Restaurant and order the Lamb Tikka Masala if you are a lover of lamb dishes like me. read more

I come here pretty often. Second-fave dining in town (after the teeny Ethiopian and before Zeppoli's) and a place that everyone seems happy to go to - even though, according to friend Pappu, it's reasonably official Indian, everyone can find several things to like here. I guess you could say that India Garden got the balance between accessible-to-American-tastes and yummy-to-Indian-food-lovers just about right. This time, my friends Pappu, Geoff, Anne, Lorie, James, Darren and I came for the lunch buffet. The variety was excellent, and even though 3/4 of the day's main dishes had tomatoes in them (can't eat them - DARN), I found plenty of yummy stuff to eat, including the veggie pakora (fritters, not at all hot) and the veggie korma (slightly sweet stew in a light-colored gravy, moderately hot). A sweet carrot curry was roundly enjoyed by all. There was an amazing-smelling dish with a passel of fenugreek in it that James loved and I've had before elsewhere and loved but it had TOMATOES in it (DARN!). Spicing is variable - some days, hot is hot and other days, hot isn't, so be a little cautious if you're not a spicy-hot fan. The naan is always competent, if not amazing. Table service is performed by real and actual ethnic Indian folks; some may not do English so well, a few come off kind of brusque, but all are helpful and nice. It's clean and attractive, if a little on the big-room-generic side, inside. The value is only fairly good; a little expensive compared to other Indian places of this quality elsewhere. But since it's one of the best eateries in town, they can get away with it. They do take-away for the lunch buffet by the pound and have a less-expensive smaller-portion ("student special") menu. I would give this a 3.5 stars. Bumpin' it up to 4 just cuz I'm nice like that annnnnd you have no other Indian options in the 'burg. The food actually gets a 4 star from me. I'm not an expert on Indian food, although I do eat an insane amount of it. Love the tandoori chicken (my FAV indian dish so big points there), the butter chicken is decent, and I love their pakora as well. They do a pretty decent job of keeping lunch fresh there which I am super appreciative of. The reason I give the place a 3.5 stars is cuz there's a server with a height complex who works there. Maybe he hates the sight of my jovial behind (who knows) but he's not the friendliest of friendlies and I hate interacting with him (and he's there ALL the time). On the flipside, there's a tall guy there who's like the world's friendliest giant but unfortunately he's not there too often. Go figure. The other reason for the 3.5 stars is the price. I highly recommend the lamb palak and tiki masala (both musts if you haven't had Indian food before) as well as the eggplant bhartha and vindallu. Mango lassi is also delish! First time eating here after living in Blacksburg for nearly two years. I grew up eating Indian Food at least once a week, and it's honestly my favorite cuisine. I was excited to try this place but was limited to ordering off of the appetizer menu because of the price of the menu items. Yet, it was still over $23. The Paneer Pakora was incredibly disappointing. The fact that I had to do takeout might have played a role, but I was expecting so much more flavor. The dipping sauces were not very good at all. Definitely could have used some Amchoor. The Manchurian chicken however? WOW. It was fantastic. Super glad I got that as well. Super flavorful and yummy. Probably will be back here for more manchurian chicken, but I'm not quite sure about anything else given the price and the experience with the paneer pakora. read more

This place is the worst. I'm a huge fan of Indian food and this was LITERALLY THE WORST. A friend and I split the Chicken Mahkani, Chicken Biryani and Naan - 3 staple Indian entrees. The Chicken Mahkani had chicken off the bone from the drumstick...with the ligament and tendon in it. It was lukewarm and repulsive. The Chicken Biryani didn't even have traditional long grain Indian rice and they had frozen peas and carrots in it clearly from the frozen section of Kroger. Rather than thin and soft naan, what I received was a single piece of naan that was thick and dense. It had clearly been reheated and was disgusting. DO NOT EAT HERE. On top of all of this, the service was awful. I had to ask the waiter to take OUR order after waiting extensively and remind him that we were still waiting for our food after he kept forgetting to bring it out. These things are true. Still, I have found India Garden Restaurant to be a fantastic lunch-time escape to get away from the world for a bit and enjoy some delicious Amer-Indian buffet food. I love it and anyone who enjoys Indian will find familiar flavors while also being able to convince those who aren't quite as brave to try something new because it's (as a friend of mine said) "not too weird." They have a moderately priced ($9, i think) lunch buffet. The selection is somewhat diverse but not very exciting. It includes a lot of staples like tandoori chicken and chicken masala and also some vegetarian fare. They've managed to make Indian food bland and uninteresting, which is hard to do. Dinner-I've found that the food is better at dinner than on the buffet, but expensive considering the quality. Better than lunch, but still nothing to write home about. If you want good Indian food in the NRV, I'd suggest Taaza in Roanoke. It's excellent! read more

I don't really like Indian food but found India Garden's buffet pretty good! I think they definitely 'americanize' it A LOT, which is probably why I love India Garden SO much. The selection isn't too grand, but they have everything you need-- I love their butter chicken and their chili chicken (or whatever it's called.) Their nan is delicious too. They don't have any dessert really, minus some fruit, but overall it's acceptable. The only thing I would really hate is the price. Most things in Blacksburg are relatively cheap but India Garden definitely is PRICEY. oh well. Just go for lunch. :) I would definitely recommend this place (but only for lunch). It's so good and flavorful...but not like typical Indian food, which most people can't really stomach...AND you don't leave the restaurant stinking. :) read more

My boyfriend and I went for our anniversary dinner and we both loved it! I was very hesitant to try India Garden since Blacksburg is not really known for its ethnic cuisine, and the bf had tried the lunch buffet which he said was "meh" - but there was a $10 off coupon and I was really craving Butter Chicken. We walked in at 6:30pm on Saturday (St. Patty's Day, actually), and the place was about half-filled. We were seated at a booth right away. There was a duo playing Irish music for the occasion. I appreciated the fact that it was relatively quiet. The atmosphere was.. um... nice? (I'm not good with words) It's basically a huge room with booths along the side, a large, sumptuous mahogany bar on the other side, and longer tables in the middle area. I think it would be a good place for a large group/family outing. We ordered the Pashware naan as our appetizer, I got the Butter chicken, he got the Rashmi (sp?) Kabob, and the garlic naan. The appetizer took a little bit to come out, which I think was the only real downside to the evening. The Pashware naan is naan stuffed with nuts and cherries, served with yogurt sauce. It reminded me of a quesadilla. Anyway, it was very delicious; not overbearing in flavor, but mildly sweet. I didn't really see the need for the yogurt thing though. The food was served family style with a large plate of rice in the middle. The portions were plenty, and especially with the appetizer, we were stuffed without even finishing them. Oh, and the rice was really good. I usually don't comment on the rice because, well, it's just rice, but this was fragrant and well-cooked. Awesome! They were both chicken dishes, and they were great! The chicken was so moist and tender. I want to know how they get the chicken so tender and juicy even with broiling. We both got ours medium-hot spiciness and liked it; feel the heat and also taste the food :9 The garlic naan was a bit heavy, but still very tasty. Of course the 5 stars don't mean that everything was perfect, but it would be very very difficult to find a restaurant that does everything perfect. I give 5 stars in that the food was delicious, atmosphere was great, and the bf and I can't wait to go back!
