    Bhindi Masala

A centrally located and longstanding restaurant which brings some needed variety to the scene. They had an impressive menu, offering not only some standard vegetarian dishes but the ability to get almost any of their entrees with either paneer or vegetables. The apple and potato chaat I got was more of a modern Indian vibe, while my bhindi masala was classic. I asked for a high spice level, and it burned, but not so much as to overshadow the sweetness of some fruity undertones and the crispness of the onions and peppers that came with it. The only thing I had against the dish was the indedible okra stems that were included; if anything, this is probably authentic. A bread with creamed spinach made a helpful dip, and it was cooked with some nicely charred bubbling on one side. They had a handy pay by card machine that they brought to the table at the end. The most significant downside is that they did not have any tea on their menu (maybe they do offer it and it just isn't listed; I did not ask). It was a large multiroom space and it's been doing good business whenever I walk by. I can see why they're doing well.

Located on Campbell Ave in downtown Roanoke, Nawab Indian Cuisine is one of the most elegant restaurants in the area and it has a loyal following by many repeat customers as well as new ones. So considering all this, I definitely had to go visit and try it out. When I arrived at the Host's station of the restaurant, I received a warm welcome and was taken to a wonderfully located table next to the front window and given a copy of the menu. Soon after, my server came by and took my drink order: a Mango Lassi, my favorite Indian drink that is made with my favorite fruit, the Mango. To eat I ordered the Gobhi Masala as appetizer, and the Garlic Naan to accompany my main entry of the Baingan Bahar, although it came very close to the Bhindi Marsala which I was very close to ordering. The appetizer was amazing: crispy and with a wonderful tasting sauce that make Indian Cuisine so tasty and savory. The Garlic Naan was good but I have had it in other Indian restaurants that has been more softer and fresher right out of the oven with lots of moist garlic on top. The Bhindi Marsala which I ordered mild was a bit too mild but of nice consistency. For dessert I ordered the Gulab Jamun. It was kind of a round donut hole with a sugar based syrup on top. Very sweet and delicious. My server was very friendly and hospitable like none in any other Indian restaurant that I have ever been and came by at the appropriate time to check on me and see if I needed anything and to see that everything was fine. Another person which I wasn't sure if he was the Host or the Manager also came by a few times as well. As I was experiencing a wonderful dining experience, many other customers came in and were seated. You can tell they were more experienced than me ordering and eating Indian food than me but we all seem to enjoy it amazingly the same. I defdefinitely recommend this restaurant for Fine Indian Cuisine and it also gets my compliments for such outstanding customer service and attention to detail.

Friendly staff. It was very clean and the food was delicious. Parking can be tricky but there's a lot across the street that's $8 for up to 2 hours. I got the tamarind and mango curry and he got the tikka masala. Also got gobi Manchurian and all were very delicious. The naan was also very good. Will be back.

The only spot that was open and staffed enough to seat and feed us at around 9pm on a Sunday night in downtown Roanoke! We seriously walked around for like an hour and went into two places where they were understaffed. We were happy to find this spot and had excellent food and service in a beautiful, empty dining room. Nearby bars were busy and full but this spot had some takeout pickups while we were here and two other tables came in right before close. Staff were attentive and very polite and friendly and the food was quick, fresh, and delicious. We chose the fried cauliflower and the chaat (tomato, cucumbers and spice in oil as a salad) and then went with a chicken and veggie skewer and a veggie korma with basmati rice. I also ordered the mango lassi (yogurt and mango) drink and it was phenomenal. A great meal, would highly recommend.

Great fried cauliflower appetizer with a sweet/sour sauce.

Brian and the team at NAWAB were exceptional!! Great food recommendations and the service was first rate! Highly recommend you check them out! Every dish was on point!

Stopped by for lunch and the portions were great for the price! Very flavorful food that came out fast! Some of the best Indian food I've had, definitely recommend if you're in the area!

Got some yummy take-out from this downtown Roanoke Indian restaurant. I tend to always do the buffet as I have a hard time deciding what to only order as an entrée. As it was dinner time, we decided to go with some classic dishes that we know we love. This was plenty of food, glad my husband stopped me from ordering more like I wanted too. Their staff was very nice on phone and equally appreciative at pick up. Food was nicely packed in mostly reusable containers and labeled. We got their Samosas (Homemade Pastry, Spiced Potatoes ,Peas ,Tamrind Chutney) as an appetizer. It included two large Samosas that held up well as a fried item for take-out. They had good flavor; I would have liked a little more kick, but it was tasty overall. We love naan and got very excited about the idea of Garlic Naan! The naan was well cooked and garlic flavor absolutely come through. The naan is an amazing catalyst to soak up the sauce of yummy Indian food. We got two entrees to share which both came with white rice. The first was the Saag (Creamed Style Spinach, Onions, Fenugreek, Garlic) with Paneer, which is an Indian cottage cheese. It was very hearty and flavorful. I thought the Saag to Paneer ratio was pretty good as well. Second was the Tikka Masala (Creamed Tomato-Fenugreek Sauce) with Chicken. The spiced curry sauce was creamy and buttery as desired. I did feel there should have been more chicken, as it was definitely mostly sauce. Overall, a satisfying and plentiful meal that did leave a bit of entrees leftovers to enjoy the next day.

A local recommended this restaurant to us as one of her favorites in Roanoke. Since we're big fans of Indian food we made a bee-line for it and weren't disappointed! My goat curry was meaty, succulent and perfectly spiced, my husband's Angaar lamb had generous chunks of tender meat in a delicious sauce. The naan was smokey and crisp on the bottom straight from the tandoor. Yum. Our server Hement couldn't have been more polite and helpful. Overall a delightful experience!!

Coming from cleveland where we actually had great Indian food, this place is a no-no for its food. Although their hospitality was incredible, which is why they'll get three stars, the food is not something I would come back here for ever again. We are happy to see that they are Indian restaurants around here however the dishes that we ordered were not up to standard which was a huge disappointment. I'm not sure if we will be back here again. The curry was too run down and the pricing for the amount of food they provided was just ridiculous.

Excellent appetizers here. I had 2 and some Naan because I wasn't too hungry. Both were delicious.

They did put out a single table for me to eat there, but it has nothing to offer in the way of ambience. Weather may also be a factor, and when I arrived at the post opening time they were still setting up. The reason I have a high opinion of the place is not any of those things, but that it offers the distinctive home-cooked taste of a cuisine that is not otherwise available in the region to my knowledge. It is vegetarian South Indian and most of the options revolve around lentils and spices. I sampled a preparation I hadn't had before of ildi, a steamed rice and lentil cake, with some mouthwatering spicy powder. My spicy dosa, which I made it clear I wanted really spicy, was indeed fiery, but also possessed the delightful crispness and mix of sour and savory flavors distinctive to this cuisine. I also note that sometimes the salt in sambar overwhelms me but I didn't have a particularly tough time here; the flavors of the spices were enough without the ridiculous oversalting that some restaurants do. It is a taste that I would be happy to come back for in the near term and I would try virtually everything they offer.

A notable reason to do that would be that they offer dosas on Saturdays, but not to go (a thin crepe tends not to travel well). I got takeout, and despite ordering on their website they did not seem to be on top of that order when I arrived. It didn't matter to me, and I would suggest that seekers of food that has that home-cooked taste would be well advised not to be overly time-sensitive. I was offered a handful of pakodas while I waited to ensure that I had something fresh to eat despite taking most of my food to go. Attention was also paid to my dietary needs, as they asked me if adding a dairy-containing raita on the side to my otherwise vegan order was okay. Their menu is not huge, the portion size is not huge for the money, but the flavor was huge. From the curry leaves sauteed onto the little side of potatoes they gave me to the rich spice mix of dal to the flaky indulgence of the paratha on the side, the experience was dynamic. Their appetizers come in bulk, but I'll have no problem finding a use for the extra onion pakodas that I vacuum sealed. I probably tried half of the vegetarian things on their menu, but I left wondering when I'd find myself back this way again so I can try the other half.

The naan was soft and buttery, and the chutney was delicious--it was also sweet enough that ordering dessert became unnecessary. The restaurant was decorated with beautifully embroidered decorations depicting Indian scenery. There were also statues as well (see photos below). The one thing that could raise this review from 4 to 5 stars is that the service was rather ordinary. Not bad, just ordinary. I highly recommend this spot to lovers of Indian cuisine!
