Ordered from India Garden last night and the food was really hit and miss, and frankly, mostly miss. The best dish was the chicken makhani. The sauce was tasty and the chicken, although oddly cut into blocks, was adequate. The plain naan was also good with a nice texture. On the other hand, the Matar paneer, which is one of my favorite Indian dishes, was oddly sweet... like, sugary sweet. The paneer was also rubbery. I've never had it this way and don't ever want it this way again. We tossed it out. The Chana masala was flavorful but so, so oily. Based in the amount of oil that those poor little chickpeas were floating in, I wouldn't order it again. We are in Rochester about once a year and have enjoyed our meals from this restaurant in the past. Unfortunately, our time with India Garden has come to an end. read more

This is Hands down the best Indian Food in Rochester !! I've been here countless time and yet to have a bad experience. The food is always hot, fresh, sometimes too spicy but always great . The vegetable samosas are awesome. The Lamb Vindaloo is my goto dish . Its spicy but not overwhelming. The potato's are always perfect. The lamb is tender but still meaty . The Chicken curry is another goto dish . Mush more basic and traditional. It's lightly spicy but also sweet . I also throughly enjoy the tandoori chicken . Always great flavors and very tender. It's severed with lemon, tomatoes and lettuce garnish . The dishes are served with rice with the opinion getting more upon request . I highly recommend it for let overs . Wanted to give India Garden a try since their lunch buffet special is a pretty good deal ($11.99 per person). I'm thinking any place will be ok since my Indian-food needs are met at Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Tandoori, and naan. The chicken tikka masala was pretty good- rich and creamy. It's steaming hot when served. Their combination of rice, chicken and yellow raisins was a pleasant surprise. The sweetness of the raisins with the savoriness of the rice was refreshing. But it was apparent that some of the other things were sitting out for a while. Most notably the samosas and the deep fried sweet potatoes. They were warm but really stale. The chicken tandoori had a funny after smell (not sure if it's because it's a bit older or not). Naan could have been more fresh too but since it's made in huge batches for the patrons and sits out for a while, it was a bit staler. For the buffet (if I were to go again), I'd just get the chicken tikka masala and rice. -Ala Carte: Chicken Tikka Masala & Garlic Naan For 14 bucks, I was definitely expecting a bigger portion of Chicken Tikka Masala but it was rather small. The portion of rice though was enormous- enough for two really hungry patrons. If they switched containers for the tikka masala and rice, the price would make more sense. India Garden used to be the only game in town, but it is still a great place to come for lunch. Family owned an operated. You can always expect great service with a smile. Even though it is a buffet, they will refill your drinks regularly and check to make sure you are enjoying your meal. A small restaurant, but extremely clean and well maintained. Our two favorite things they serve are: 1) Hot Wings. Not sure what to really call them, but they have these tiny little wings spiced with red Indian flavoring. Served only during their weekend buffet. We eat them by the plateful. 2) Tandoor Chicken. Our favorite in Rochester. Well spiced and cooked perfectly. First I notice they say halal meat on there menu .. but I am sure they get there meat from restaurant Depot ... anyways that's not Zabiha halal ... that we all muslims required to eat .... Good, fresh food. The service is friendly and prompt. Clean and simple interior. Today's buffet included chicken tikka masala, a saag paneer, beef curry, vegetable curry, samosas, tandoori chicken, chicken wings, Bombay potatoes, two kinds of rice, fresh naan and a variety of fresh fruit and hot sauces. The meat is soft and seems to be good quality (some places I've eaten at seem to mask poor quality meat with rich, yummy sauces. Not the case here - it was all good). The naan was fresh but rather crisp (I'm a fan of naan so soft you could use it as a pillow during the inevitable post-buffet food coma, but that's just an personal preference). They refilled it every ten minutes or so, so it was easy to get piping hot, obviously fresh naan with your lunch. In the thirty minutes I was here, several people came out of the kitchen to refill the buffet dishes at least five times - so I felt confident that the food was being topped up with freshly cooked, hot food. It was busy with a wide range of guests. The fresh fruit was a really nice touch. I've eaten a lot of Indian food in a lot of cities, states, and countries around the world. This is certainly an enjoyable lunch with a lot of variety. It isn't very spicy so if you are looking for something to remove several layers of tastebuds from your tongue, you may want to look somewhere else. It's aromatic but better suited for middle-American tastebuds vs being spicy or hot. Somewhere I would come back to when I'm in town next, and happily give the full four stars. It was OK but I've certainly have had better Indian buffets. The previous posts stating no spice are right on. Mind you the lovely bride thought it was spicy but she thinks mint chocolate ice cream is spicy. OK I'm exaggerating but it was one of the more blander Indian restaurants I've been to. Despite not being spicy the chicken korma and chicken tandoori were flavorful. I was disappointed they did not have butter chicken or chicken masala but that is a me thing. They had both beef and chicken curry but both were more veggie than meat and if you know me veggies are not considered food in my world. Naan was average at best. There was no desert dishes specifically gulab jamun. If they had the gulab jamun it would of helped the over al rating. The ambience was more basic decor than 'ambience', service was tad better than average for a buffet. The going out the door on Indian Garden is if I and the bride are ever in Rochester again. I'll try one of the other very few Indian places just to see if there is possibly something better read more

Also, ate Indian at some industry shindig in Monterey once. I do not recall my opinion of this food. OPEN BAR. Had the wife order for me here, as she'd had Indian all over. I was blown away at how wonderfully great this food was and how well the server did to hang with me on my inability to understand the menu. One of my favorite restaurants in Rochester after only my first time there. I feel badly that I can't remember the names of the dishes I tried, but I got some kind of curry/cream shrimp dish, person I was with got some kind of rice/chicken dish (no sauce, just a spiced chicken/rice). Both were excellent - full of complex flavors and very filling. You get a lot of food for the money. Also got the garlic naan, definitely recommend it. This is a great place to come for the lunch buffet. My granddaughter loves this places (so much for the "mac n cheese store"). At her request we feasted on chicken marsala, rice, nan (so good hot), and some watermelon. I also loved the potato things. Kind of like a wonton but bigger and stuffed with potatoes.
