When we first saw the restaurant building my wife and I were not impressed, BUT we remembered that most "hole-in-the-wall", family-owned restaurants look something like this one. Soon after we walked in we were directed to our table, then shortly afterward realized that it was a buffet. As soon as we realized this, we stood up got into line and started serving ourselves. There was a nice selection of food: two types of rice, one potato dish,vegetable curry, beef curry and a couple chicken dishes and some naan bread and more delicious food that I don't know the name of but enjoyed thoroughly. My only complaint is that the attention to detail of the cleanliness of the plates, silverware and cups was not perfect. But almost no restaurant does this perfectly. Decent Indian food, but due to lack of good options in the area, is sort of the go to place on Rochester. Their food can be better but lunch buffet is pretty good. We are locals and this is our favorite restaurant in town. For $9-11 you can get an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet daily that has a few selections in meat / veggie entrees, appetizers, salads, dessert, naan etc. The tandori chicken here is the best I've ever had (and I've eaten Indian cuisine all over the country and in Europe - it's amazingly flavorful and well cooked). I think it's hard to please many Americans with Indian food (people complain it's too spicy or not spicy enough so often and that is personal taste - here in the midwest people usually don't spice foods and if you make it 'authentic' you lose a huge customer base) - but this place has very flavorful, fresh, good tasting sauces and food, especially for the price! read more

This is the worst indian food I have ever had. The chicken tikka masala has a ton of ginger... I have never had a single chicken tikka masala with any ginger flavor before, let alone the main flavor being ginger. The rice is one sticky blob, completely overdone. I accidentally came here instead of royal indian and I am so terribly sorry that I did. I would also mention there a menacing looking guy that was hanging out here that I am assuming was friends with the owner or a worker. I felt very uncomfortable with the way he stared at me( the entire time I was there) and I was glad I had gotten my food to go 10/10 go to royal indian instead. read more

My wife went there while i was out of town and told me "Meh," but I don't trust her taste sometimes, so I tried it for lunch on my own, and LOVED it. I wouldn't give it five stars in New York, Chicago, or LA. In Rochester, MN it's Five. Fucking. Stars. Delish. I love coming here. Have had dine-in which had excellent services. Very clean, elegant feel in the dining area. Just had take out which was just as good. The Shrimp Korma is my favorite. Tried the Chicken Marsala it was good, but I probably won't order again. Overall, always enjoyable. read more

The building is a bit dated and in need of some TLC, but don't let that scare you off. The food is delicious and the service is attentive. So far, I've had the Chana Masala, Beinghan Bartha, Saag Paneer, and Lamb Biryani, and they've all been excellent. I can't eat wheat, but when a fellow diner orders naan, it looks wonderful. Even my not-so-adventurous, meat-and-potatoes boyfriend asks me to go here fairly often. Each time we have gone, the server has made sure to send us home with enough rice for our leftovers, which is a nice gesture. This is one of my favorite Indian places (actually, it's tied for first), either in Rochester, Minneapolis, or the South (San Francisco) Bay area near San Jose (where I lived for a few years). I've been eating here since the late 90's, both for the lunch buffet and the dinner menu. My only complaint (which doesn't warrant removing a star) is that the iced tea is a little "odd" tasting -- but unless you're really bent on having iced tea, I've got nothing bad to say. read more

As my British friend would say, "a proper curry." I've not been to India but this was possibly the best Indian food I've ever had. We quite literally smelled it from the road and had to turn around to try it. I am still patting myself on the back for that decision. Tikka masala is my jam and they did not disappoint. The chicken was tender (I think maybe the tandoori chicken is used in the dish?) and the sauce perfectly flavored. There are very few Indian restaurants in this town / city. This is one of them. We visited this restaurant. Buffet was below average. However for the lunch time this is the only Indian restaurant remains open, rest of the two opens for dinner in weekdays, that's a positive point of the restaurant, hence one star more only because there may not be good potential for the Indian food business, and this family keeps their restaurant open for the lunch. read more

My S.O. is from northern India, and we've tried our fair share of Indian restaurants back home in NY. India Garden is BETTER than most restaurants we've been to. The samosas are a must try. We also tried the pakora appetizer, which was good, but not as good as the samosa. We shared the chicken vindaloo and garlic naan for the main course. The chicken vindaloo is a stand-out if you like spicy food. I might even go as far as saying it is the best I have had. The meat is high quality, and I don't think there was any sauce left in the pot after we soaked it all up with the delicious naan. I can't wait to go back for more! read more

The only Indian I tried so far in Rochester. I've been here about 3 times so far. I must say it's really delicious. A couple of things: service is very very slow, be prepared to be very patient. And the food isn't spicy. I like a numb mouth by the end of my Indian meal, and this didn't even have a sting to me. Nevertheless, the food is tasty and I will be back. This is by far the best restaurant in Rochester. Granted, that is not saying much given the low quality of other restaurants, but India Garden would do well in a much larger city. It's comparable to Gandhi Mahal in Minneapolis. The food is always fresh, hot, and tasty. The owner, a friendly, interesting person, formerly owned a popular Indian restaurant in London that catered to high government officials and other grand pouhbahs. I come here often for the buffet lunches and brunches and must always guard against eating too much. I have been to India so I know what authentic Indian tastes like. I have been to many an Indian restaurant across the country and this is actually the WORST most UNAUTHENTIC Indian food I've ever had in the States. I ordered the chicken biryani to satisfy my craving and it was just awful. I was starving but I chose hunger over eating that sloppy mess. The rice was soggy, the chicken tasted stale, and the taste was not at all like actual biryani (like they used pre-packaged boxed masala spices that have expired or should be used for a fish curry and not biryani). I thought maybe I caught them on a bad day so I tried this place one more time.....& the chicken korma was TERRIBLE. Most unauthentic, stale tasting thing I've ever eaten. For Rochester this is the best Indian restaurant in town. Don't be fooled by its outside appearance, the place is clean and their food is really good. I like their chicken korahi the most. Their naan bread is also excellent. Service is average and it is very well priced. Rochester doesn't have very good ethnic restaurants, nor a lot of them, so I'm usually pretty suspicious when in town. Living in both NYC and Chicago currently, I eat a lot of Indian food since both cities have more than their fair share of them. I had the lunch buffet and was surprised that it was pretty good actually. Of course it's a buffet, so it's not THE best, but as far as having my fair share of buffets in the biggest Indian centers of the US, this is not terribly far behind them. While it isn't the same breadth of lunch buffet I'm used to in the Twin Cities (i.e. Bombay Bistro), it was a quaint if dated interior and the limited selections were not so limited as long as you don't play the compare game.
