The food was great. Older place and it's pretty much a one man show during the week. Me and my family enjoyed the grub.

It's really a shame that I've lived in Lubbock for this long having never heard of India Palace. It was just by chance I walked in for lunch today; they are next door to where I had just picked up some boots from Flint Boot & Hat they had repaired, it was noon, and I like Indian food. So, I walked in and was immediately and enthusiastically greeted and served water at my table of choice--because I was the only one there for Tuesday lunch. Which is a travesty! I ordered the Kashmiri Raita and the Murg Korma. Ok, time-out, let's address the elephant in the room: the "ambiance". This place has a very unique one. It is clean, and that is most important. But it's kind of dark and dingy. The furniture is mismatched and badly dated. The heavy drapes block out what little light comes in from the north-facing windows. And then what I came to learn was the former lunch buffet room is in a sunken area, dimly lit, the empty buffet just there like some relic from another time five years ago. I love it. No pretense. That's an ambiance all its own. I came here hoping to eat good food at a reasonable price and I left having eaten really, really good food at a reasonable price with great service. Not for the color scheme. I'd never had Raita before and I liked it a lot. It was actually a really good compliment to the just right for me medium spicy Korma. The chicken was tender, the rice was great, and the sauce was so good I scraped the dish to get the last out because I didn't order any naan. By that time one new diner had been seated. The meal with tax was $15.xx, I paid $20 with tip. I wish I had known about this place in better times, when there would have been a buffet, but I'm going to try to run the buffet the manual way and try everything on the menu. This place deserves more patrons. The food I had was very, very good. In an urban setting people would be lined up for this: authentic Indian food. Go support this place. Go support 34th Street businesses in general. They're the real deal hometown businesses. read more

I came to Lubbock to visit cousins, and my last meal in Texas was India palace. I ordered the chicken biryani, it has the right amount of spice and the portions are big. I also ordered samosas it was great, it includes the mint chutney which complimented really well. The service is fast and they are very knowledgeable about the menu if you had any questions. This is a really nice Indian Restaurant. The food was really good and tasty, and the service was great as well, for being operated by one person (the owner) mainly. This restaurant is dirty. I wanted to wash my hands after just touching the menu. The upholstered furniture is awful: dirty and creaky. Glad to know it's true about the one man show, that's what we surmised. We waited for one mango lassi that didn't come and finally bolted. Paul makes some darn good food with really gracious service. The Bahaar-E-Subz is my favorite dish on the menu, and I am not a vegetarian. The naan is a bit heavier and chewier than I would prefer; however, everything else is fantastic. Easily the best Indian in town. He will actually spice it up on you if you order it, so go easy if you aren't used to a kick. read more

Lubbock doesn't have many choices for Indian food, but India Palace is my favorite out of all of them. The lunch buffet is pretty good and each item is distinct, which I love because variety is important in a buffet. The rice and naan aren't fresh which is a slight problem, but if you ask nicely, the owner will bring you a plate of fresh naan. The owner also happens to be the waiter and the chef, so the service can be a bit slow at times, but I feel like the food is good enough to make up for the mediocre service. The dinner options are pretty good as well. I like all of the appetizers as well as all of the chicken curries. The beef and seafood curries are ok but the chicken ones are by far the best. The vegetarian curries are also pretty good, second only to chicken. The water here tastes better than regular tap water for some reason but that might just be my imagination. The mango lassi is a good drink to get if you don't like water. As much as I enjoy the food here, I do not recommend getting the Tandoor items. The chicken skewers are very dry and I did not like it very much. Overall, this is a pretty good place that I recommend trying. If you dine in, make sure that you have a lot of time because depending on how much business he has, the service might be slow. Good friends that I met at Tech invited my sister and me out to eat to what he mentioned was a "really good" Indian restaurant. From the exterior, I could tell those aesthetics wasn't everything - so I knew the start that they mainly focused on the quality of their food. Neither was the interior and I almost felt as if I had just walked into one of my great-aunt's place. We sat at a round table so we could talk amongst ourselves. One thing that I was really craving was a vegetable samosa and I wanted it, so I ordered what I usually wouldn't order which was an appetizer. The service was slow - slow as molasses. I literally took an hour for our food to arrive at our table. At first, I wondered why. All four of us took turns to use the restroom since there was only one unisex toilet available. When the food finally arrived, it was: delicious, flavorful, and reminded me of an Indian restaurant back in Houston. We all munched shared food and were so happy to finally fill our bellies. This is a great, authentic restaurant! It's not fancy and could be a little cleaner but.....sometimes you just have to make that jump. There were no servers other than the proprietor. Disappointed Ordered delivery and they sent me 3 styrofoam cups. 1. rice 2. Veg korma 3. Cucumber salad no forks, spoons or bowls. I ordered online and requested specifically for utensils and bowls. What a gem! I did not know this place existed and I wish I knew about it sooner! The gentleman who served us, Paul, was the kindest man I have ever met in my life. This place is on 34th street next to small woods. I know it doesn't look like much from the outside or when you come inside but the food has been nothing short of spectacular. This is a mom and pop kind of restaurant. Everything we tried was cooked with love. Everything was seasoned to perfection. Paul told us they have been here for 14 years and I see why! I am so glad I found this place since it's only a 3 minute ride from work. The prices are completely affordable and the portions are perfect. They are not oversized but just perfect. We went to the Indiana palace last night. The LAMB was tough as a boot. When and if we go again WILL NOT order the lamb!

The outside of this restaurant in this little shopping center is not indicative of the glory found within. The lunch buffet is outstanding and the Indian is delicious and maybe the best I've had.. period. I've travelled the world. Mr. Ball is a one man show and has been making these dishes for me for over 30 years. I've been here a few times over the years. I'm not completely sold on the place, but it definitely hits the Indian Curry/Naan spot in an emergency situation. One of the main reasons I don't come here more often, is that anytime I take anyone here (an ex-gf, ex-roommate (great cook/foodie), best friend, wife), they are always unimpressed/grossed out by something and never want to go back. It is pretty 'hole in the wall,' but I mean, its run by a sole proprietor who literally works every day of the week. I can't imagine that he's making bucket loads of cash everyday with which he can renovate the place from top to bottom or move to a 'nicer' location. I say that because every time I go there, it's usually pretty empty, especially during the evenings. During lunch when the buffet is served, it tends to be a bit busier. As for the decor, I definitely think it wouldn't hurt to have a little revamp; but again, he either doesn't have the extra money, has the money but doesn't care/ or doesn't see anything wrong with the decor. It's pretty tacky. I'm a guy and not like, into interior decorating or anything, but dingy, aqua blue walls with one of those shiny, gold Indian garbs as the main thing to catch your eye- - - even I can tell that's not the hippest motif around. Another atmospheric issue with the place is kind of an awkward silence that dwells, lingers, and permeates the place. It kinda makes you sad inside. I don't want to be sad. The food. Most importantly, the food. I think the naan is really good. I haven't exactly traveled the world and had all the naan out there, but this is pretty good for sure. It's been so long since I've been there, before tonight, that I won't try to retroactively speak to anything about the entrees, except that anytime I get a chicken curry, the cut of chicken is really weird. There's all this gristle or connective cartilage and somehow individual chucks seem to have both white and dark meat. I have no clue. I've cooked many-a whole chicken, and cannot conceive of what part of the chicken this is coming from. And tonight, it didn't taste very fresh. Gristly, freezer tasting chicken-bad. Everything else about the curry was really good. Intense flavor, good texture and consistency. Price - another reason I don't go too often. If you're gonna charge me $12 for a little tin dish of curry, it better have damn decent, recognizable chunks of chicken. Add $1.50 for naan and that's pretty high priced dinner for Lubbock. I expect to be fed accordingly. But maybe chicken isn't the thing to get there, I don't know. Knowing the chicken quality, I'm hesitant to to try the beef or lamb... or the shrimp or fish for that matter. But I'm not a vegetarian and have a bit of a psychological hang up with eating a meatless meal. I can and do eat vegetarian meals, but not too often. In summation, the price-to-quality ratio isn't good enough to keep me coming back. As with any small, ethnic food, local business, I wish it well. But I can't justify regular/continued patronage, sadly. The atmosphere is pretty 'off' on top of that, which to me isn't really important, but a heads up to those of you for whom it is (I wouldn't take a high-maintenance date here). I think the lunch buffet is better value, with better selection - if you don't mind going back to the office smellin' like curry. read more

The service is fine - it's a small operation so there's not busboys and waiters falling over themselves to help you. You'll be disappointed if you expect an army of people clapping hands and singing idiotic birthday songs. It's the owner and maybe a nice helper. The restaurant hasn't been updated in a while and looks old. Don't make the mistake another reviewer has made and confuse age with cleanliness. I've looked at the kitchen and it's clean. Best food I have had in Lubbock, hands down. I am actually upset that I am moving away from Lubbock soon and have just discovered this place. First, let's discuss the decor.....WHO CARES. I don't know why some reviews are hung up on the fact that the decor is outdated. Next, our service was not slow at all. It was actually relatively fast. The food was SO good. I love Indian cuisine, and this has been some of the best Indian food I have ever had in my life. I had the chicken curry, and the chicken was so tender you could cut it with a spoon.
