My husband and I absolutely love this place. The food is wonderful -- it's freshly made when you order and all the dishes we've had have tremendous flavor. You can specify if you'd like mild or spicy, just remember to tell him. The service is slow, although the owner is the only one who covers lunch. The owner is so kind and gracious, if you're wanting something different, he's always willing to accommodate. I knew i was in trouble when i walked in the restaurant and there was not the usual aroma of an indian restaurant. This is by far the worst Indian food i have ever had, I am not indian but i have traveled to cities with large Indian populations such as Vancouver BC, LA, and Houston TX. So i have a pretty good idea what the food should taste like. Without sounding downright hateful, this must be what Indian prison food tastes like: it was watery, under seasoned, and made with the cheapest of ingredients. It had no spice which is the hallmark of indian food. and when i asked for chutney to try to spice up the food so it would be somewhat fit to eat, the establishment said: we don't have any but how about a chopped jalapeno pepper? I give this place a 3 and a half. Overall I would recommend this place but there are a few things I need to note that keep it from being a four or higher. The owner was very friendly and there was a great sense of care and attention to the food. The chicken cudai and the keema naan were strong. The mango lassi was fanatastic. It was best I've ever had from an Indian resturant and was very well rounded. There was certainly the sense that things were made fresh instead of reheated. Unfortunately, the murgh makani was a bit salty and every thing is served on short-grain rice instead of basmati, which is a pretty significant drawback. I don't put a lot of emphasis on decor but it really looked like the place is past its hay-day. I most certainly will go back and I think switching the rice and fixing some of the decor and lighting would make this a four and a half. read more

Went to this restaurant just now to dine as I'm a great fan of Indian food. The owner(I think) of the restaurant told us " you may seat wherever " and then he never showed up at our table but start talking to other people and customer. After 5 minutes another guy comes to our table, serves 2 glasses of water and takes off without greeting and taking our drinks order. We waited for another 10 minutes and none of the servers care to stop by. Talking about hygiene, our table was kind of filthy and the person who dropped the menu, cleaned our table with the menu itself. I never saw someone do that. It was like he slapped the menu to brush the bread crums off the table but the table remained sticky. We then stood up and took off as we were very hungry. Excellent Indian food at very fair prices. Pal is one of the most genuinely kind and grateful restaurant owners I have ever known. He makes this great place even better. He is very attentive, will make anything you want, just the way you want it, and you can tell that he really loves making people happy. Delicious, authentic Indian food is hard to find in Lubbock, and we are lucky to have Pal and his gift for cooking here. This is my first 5 star review on yelp. Good food, OK atmosphere, very pleasant people. So why only 3 stars? Because while we were eating, several (that's more than 2) roaches were roaming around under the tables. One of the employees came out with a fly swatter and attacked those that were visible, but soon, more appeared, many more. I love Indian food, but this wasn't what I was used to, the spices were not what I was expecting and the lentil soup was cold. Maybe it was a different part of India or the chef has a unique twist. Wasn't quite my cup of tea, though. What I LOVED was the veggie samosa and the sauces that went with it! So hot and delicious! This is where you want to go if you want authentic Indian food. The service isn't the best, but over the past year it seems to be getting a little better. If you go I do recommend not expecting it to come quickly and not having many other plans soon after. The guy who owns it is really nice and isn't bothered that you can't pronounce the items on the menu. They also give you the entree and rice, but give you a plate to put it on so its good for sharing. My favorite thing has to be their amazing tomato soup. Last, if you have a chip on your card he has to add it to the total and you can't just write it on your reciept, but you should be tipping well anyway. I wanted to start my review with a disclaimer that Lubbock has only three Indian restaurants and this review is purely based on that comparison. Cons: 1. Lousy and dull ambience. Looks like was not upgraded in 20 years. 2. Service is slow, I mean VERY SLOW(the main reason is the restaurant is an one man show. He is the owner/cook/waiter) 3. Lunch buffet is NOT the best. I would suggest not to try buffet but try the ala-carte menu. 4. Not many items in the menu. Now to the pros: 1. This is the BEST, NEAR authentic food in Lubbock. Period. 2. Naans are the best !!! Its fresh and not frozen( unlike the other Indian restaurants in Lubbock). Try onion kulcha and butter naan. 3. Many Indian restaurants use same base for most of the curries. You won't see/taste a much difference between them. But here each item has distinguish color, texture and taste. At times curries could be a bit watery, but still tastes excellent !!! 4. Their samosa and sauce are very good. I believe those are NOT freshly made daily but still tastes real good. 5. I used to eat non veg and this is my fav list: butter chicken and Murg Mirchi Masala, Murg tikka. I don't eat beef and so I don't know how that is here. 6. I stopped eating Meat 4 years ago and started trying their veg menu. OMG!!! Better than non veg . I can safely bet the best Indian veg items in Lubbock . I love their Malai Kofta. The other veg hits are Chana Masala, navrattan Korma. 7. When it comes to lassi, his Mango lassi would get 10/10. Here is my recommendation for anyone who wants to try AUTHENTIC Indian food in Lubbock. I bet you won't be disappointed. First I want to start by saying that the owner/server/chef here is one of the most polite people I've ever met. A very pleasant man to be around. However, I think that his politeness is influencing a lot of people's reviews when commenting on the quality of the food. This place is kind of a hole in the wall. The interior is very drab and looks like it used to be an office building of some sort, but I find a strange sort of "dive diner" appeal to it. The owner once again is very polite, albeit a bit slow, but I forgave the slow pace of, well, everything since he was/is the only person working there. However, I cannot forgive the quality of the food. Every dish that I saw was in some sort of sauce was EXTREMELY watery and very very salty. When I put three items on my plate it all just sort of ran together like three different colors of dye and made a mess. The buffet ran out of naan, so I went back to my table and quietly waited for about 10 minutes then went back up to check. Still no naan. I started eating my food and about the time I was finished the owner came to my table with a plate and gave me some fresh naan. The gesture was appreciated, but the meal was already kind of ruined at this point as I was almost finished and everything was the consistency of chicken noodle soup and I had no bread to go with it. Because the lunch buffet is more in my price range than the dinner menu, I had been eating at India Palace for a few years before I ever even tried the dinner menu. I never thought I could try something that blew me away even more than Pal's excellent lunch buffet, but his dinner menu is somehow even better! Regardless of whether you eat the lunch buffet or order something for dinner, it doesn't really matter what you eat -- you will be satisfied! Lastly, I want to talk about Pal for a minute. If you eat at the lunch buffet, Pal is the only person you will see. He is one of the nicest people I have ever met, hands down! He is polite, helpful, kind, and hardworking. This place just honestly seems like it used to be great, but hadn't had any real upkeeping or change in maybe 10 or more years. The inside didn't feel clean and the service was not friendly. The food didn't really taste like Indian food. The buffet didn't have very many choices. I went for lunch with my husband and it was a busy hour and we were the only ones. That is never good for a buffet. That means the food had been sitting for awhile and we didn't have any chance of getting new food either. India Palace has a great buffet that I have been going to for about 10 years now. The food is always consistent and usually the same items are on the menu. The food and hospitality are great! I have only ordered off the menu on two occasions and the beef masala is fantastic. The chicken, lentils, meatballs and naan on the buffet are very good! Worst restaurant experience in Lubbock so far. Ordered Bhuna Gost (beef gravy). The amount of beef was half of what you will usually get in another restaurant. The place has a foul smell, dark interior and dead empty. I went there during busy lunch hour and only 3 other people were eating in a corner, thats it! Potato stuffed bread was an average experience, but, ground beef (kima) stuffed bread literally stinks. Will never recommend to anyone. Just when I almost gave up on finding the perfect Indian restaurant, I discovered this hidden gem and felt like I was eating with Vishnu himself! This place looks like it came straight from India (which isn't too flattering I know), but the food was incredible. The most impressive aspect of the food is that the meat is cooked perfectly, which is rare among Indian restaurants. I don't care about the huge mob of local Indians who probably won't give ANY Indian restaurant their approval unless it has 3 Michelin stars. I've waited for over a year to try this place not wanting to be disappointed. My wife and I came for dinner and were pleasantly surprised! It's the best Indian food I've had in Lubbock. The Saag Paneer was amazing and the naan was excellent too. We also had a cucumber salad that was good as well as their version of chicken tikka masala. All the flavors were familiar yet unique.
