Best Indian in Northampton, hands down! At first I was leery because the pictures of chicken masala did not look like the creamy consistency of past chicken masala I'm used to seeing at other restaurants. But after eating here I realized the consistency of their chicken masala is because it is freshly made! It's the best chicken masala and lightest sauce I've ever had. India Palace had the best experience on offer that I've had at a restaurant since the pandemic started - and one of the best from outside of it, as well. The waiter was attentive, polite, and patient; my partner hadn't had Indian food before, and he was able to suggest a range of dishes in a variety of heats for her. The food was superb; incredibly filling, rich, and full-flavored. The ambience at the location itself was spectacular, and had us wishing our family liked Indian food better so we could bring them there. The waiter is also the first waiter I've seen masked in a long time. I felt safe, which was incredible. I'm so glad a friend recommended we try curbside pickup from India Palace. For whatever reason, I had long been a fan of another Indian restaurant in town, but have felt like the prices have gone up and the quantities of food have gone down. Not so at India Palace, where we had our first of many great meals the other night, via curbside pickup! I called and both ordered and paid over the phone (please add a tip when you do so! They didn't ask, but it's just nice, especially in these pandemic times); pickup was easy at the restaurant; all I had to do was call and they brought it out to me. The food was excellent; I would have liked it hotter, admittedly, and I don't know if I would say my mind was completely blown, but it was solidly flavorful, the portions were great, and the naan was the best part. We got both peshwari and methi naan and they were both awesome! Nicely charred a bit, with lovely texture and again, bountiful! We ordered two stand-bys just as a test: chana masala and chicken tikka masala. The chana masala was the one of the two we enjoyed more, with a nice rich sauce. The chicken was cooked perfectly, nothing stringy or fatty about it. Our impression is they might use less cream than some places, but that's fine, it was all delicious. Last, I really liked how things were labeled in the bag; see the attached photo. Maybe it's not necessary, but especially when trying new things and new places, that just struck me as useful. Last night, we decided to try India Pavillion. Up to then, it was the only Indian restaurant in town we had not been to. We won't be going back. While the atmosphere was lovely and the server charming, the food was mediocre at best. The tandoori chicken we ordered was cooked properly and seasoned well, but the problem was that the chicken itself had clearly seen better days. It tasted old and smelled a bit funky. When we mentioned it to the waiter, he went back to talk to the chef and came back with a message that the chicken was cooked to order. That was never the question. The cooking wasn't the problem. The problem was what was cooked. This was no spring chicken. It was long past its prime. Not only that, the mulligatawny soup was bland. The veggie thali platter was boring. With India House and Bombay Royale in town, there is no need to return to the Palace. Its a shame. Its also a lesson learned. Yuck. read more

We were having a rough night, we had tried two other Indian restaurants in town but everything had ridiculously long waits, so we came here hoping to satisfy our cravings. We were quickly seated in a decent sized restaurant that was rather low key in its atmosphere and design. We were greeted, offered beverages, and then we ordered our food. We started with the appetizer sampler, we had one vegetarian in our group and I was pleasantly surprised that they automatically separated the appetizers with meat in them from those without, without us even asking. The appetizers weren't bad overall, I think all of the fried battered was greatly under seasoned, and the stuffing for the samosa was also incredibly under seasoned, but it is really hard to mess them up (a card stuffed inside another carb and deep fried...), so not many complaints there. Our entrees then came out, two of us ordered our food as spicy as possible, while the other ordered mild. The two spicy dishes were rather mild-moderate in their heat level which was rather disappointing. However, what was more disappointing was the flavor. In general, all of the dishes were incredibly under seasoned and rather bland. I was rather disappointed. While the food was not bad per se, my craving for the complex flavors associated with Indian food was definitely not satisfied with my experiences at this restaurant. The staff during our entire experience were very friendly, helpful, and prompt. Even as the restaurant began to become more and more busy as the night when our, the service didn't ever suffer. Overall, I'd come back here if it was the only option in the area, but it isn't, so I'd try elsewhere first. read more

We came to NoHo for a day date and stumbled upon this little restaurant. I am always craving Indian, so I was delighted when my fiancé said he was down. The place could use a little more lighting and the smell was a little off. I know that Indian restaurants have a certain scent... But this was different, kind of like a funk. Either way, we ordered our lunch. We ordered two glasses of red wine, which was filled to the rim, literally, it was a balancing act for the waiter to not spill it. Totally impressed. We had the chicken pakora for our appetizer as well as the vegetable fritter. The pakora was tough, it was like eating a piece of styrofoam. The flavor was almost the same too. The fritter was absolutely delicious, which was surprising . It came with the lamb curry we planned on splitting. The lamb curry was okay, not spectacular. The deep fried nan was really good, but anything fried is normally good, that's probably why the fritters were so yummy. We also had minced lamb nan, which was also great. The waiter was really good about filling our glasses, which I really liked. The decor was nice. We paid $31.90 total for our meal, it was a great deal. I'm not familiar with Indian food so my daughter and I decided to be adventurous. This proved to be a bad idea in the long run. It seems like this restaurant is staffed only by the family of the owners of the restaurant. Despite having the owner as our waiter, he was not very polite nor helpful with regard to the food on the menu, the ingredients used or even simply assisting us with clarifying entrées specifically. He would simply repeat what the entrée was, as if repeating or perhaps speaking to us LOUDER might help...my daughter's meal was served with several sauces (multicolored and without explanation), at no point were we asked if we were satisfied, if we needed anything else, etc. I gave them two stars simply because my Chicken Something was actually quite tasty but their prices are a bit high for what you get, both in quality and quantity. The food was good but not remarkable. NOTE: I accidentally left my VERY special sweater there - with an heirloom pin from my grandmother - and called them immediately to ask if they could please put it aside for me, to which they agreed. I was unable to return the following day but made it back a few days later. THEY HAD LEFT MY SWEATER ON A RACK BY THE FRONT DOOR AND IT WAS STOLEN. They had nothing to say to me for this utterly asinine behavior and furthermore, initially attempted to blame ME, saying it was MY fault for not returning sooner to collect it! The owner's wife went to the kitchen, returning with an older man who was either her father or father-in-law; it seemed like she got him to validate my blame. To the contrary, he said both of them had behaved shamefully since they knew when a customer calls about a missing item, it gets put behind the counter, not left where it can be accessed by anyone. I had to file a police report but I'm fairly certain I'm never going to see my sweater again, as a result of their foolishness. *DISCLAIMER: their stupidity may have tainted my review, but only slightly. I actually stopped by a local Thai restaurant hoping to have lunch but opted out as I saw customers in front of me ignored and waiting to be seated, way to disorganized for me I thought. I walked across the street to one of the nicest dining surprises I was to have in a while, I was greeted promptly seated and given a menu and water. Because it was a holiday they were not serving a buffet, I ordered Muligatawney Soup, a Thali Plate, Saag Paneer, Poori and Paratha, I was asked about the spice level and chose medium which was perfect. The soup was excellent, I have not had as good a soup in a very long time. The Poori was out oof this world delicious hot and crispy right from the hot oil and the Paratha was equally as good nice and buttery.The Thali plate comprised Kaali Dal, Chana Marsala, Aloo Gajar Matar, Raita, Basmati Rice, Papadum and Gulab Jamun for dessert. Everything was delighful on the Thali plate especially the Papadum none better in my view, the rice was fragrant the subtleties of spices and flavors of each dish was outstanding. The Saag Paneer was without question the most memorable I have had, I've not had better anywhere, simply divine! The Chutneys that accompanied the meal, onion, tamarind and cilantro mint were outstanding as well, the onion was off the chart one of the best as was the the cilantro mint. To finish the meal and to place a capstone on a wonderful dining experience was the Gulab Jamum, it had a much denser texture than usual, thus a more concentrated flavor than I have had before, excellent in every way. My partner and I just moved here from Boston and were craving Indian food so we gave this place a try. The website calls it "the area's only Indian restaurant," which made us a bit cautious, but it ended up being some of the best we've ever had. We ordered pick-up during the Covid lockdown and the food was ready within 15 minutes. Here's what we ordered and our take on it: - Saag paneer. We got it hot and it was definitely super spicy but delicious. A little too intense for me but my partner loved it! The cheese and spinach seemed very fresh. - Chicken tikka masala. We also got this hot and it was indeed spicy but also creamy with a lovely, interesting texture. This was my favorite. - Samosas. They were very fried but honestly one of the best I've ever had. The chutneys that came with them were excellent, too. - Two mango lassis. SO GOOD. They were thick, creamy, and not watered down with ice. (A lot of places do that and we were glad they didn't.) Delicious and useful for spicy food. The entrees also both came with saffron rice, and you can really taste the saffron, which was awesome. Overall, this place is amazing and we will definitely be getting take out from here again! read more

India Palace is an odd duck. Generally regarded as "good, but not as good as India House", it is rarely busy. Normally I believe in the Wisdom of Crowds, but on this one, the crowd is wrong. Maybe IH has a better publicist? Here's the breakdown. The food at India Palace is every bit as good as IH. The prices are better. The service is fast and super friendly. The portions equal those at IH. The place is clean and quiet. There are only 2 things about India Palace that I can see go against it. 1) Due to its location, the parking is a little tougher. 2) The decor is not as fancy as IH. The Lunch menu is fantastic, I go there often. Lunch includes an entree, rice, and either veggie fritters or soup. The fritters rock. I usually go for some form of curry, and they have a good selection. A very good meal for a very reasonable price. Anyway, if you love Indian food, give India Palace a shot. Honestly the food was not that good. (Samosa's aside, they were good.) Mostly just edible. I got the veggie korma and my friend got the lamb. She said hers wasn't that good either. My Indian cheese resembled nothing more than grocery store shredded cheddar. And it wasn't really that much cheaper than India House. The service was fantastic, i will agree with that. Wow, this place is cheap. BUT it doesnt mean the food here. The staff here will fill your water after each sip ( I'm serious)! service is very nice and polite. The place was empty when bf and i walked in, of course we walked in like 15 mins after it had just opened for business. we were starving! while waiting for my sis and her bf to arrive, we ordered the samosas. yum! they came out piping hot -crispy and delic! the menu has something for everyone, where it be a vegetarian meal , chicken, or lamb. theres an entree for someone. i ordered the lamb curry. it was quite tasty , altho i wish my lamb was a bit more tender. it wasnt hard to chew but i've always had more tender lamb elsewhere. bf got his fave chicken tikka masala. the sauce is amazing! sis got the same thing. and her bf got the veggie curry which he says is soo filling! the naan is excellent and comes out hot and not too crispy. for our meal it came out to $40! what a bargain considering anywhere it would be 40 for just 2 ppl not to say 4 ppl! if i am ever in the area again. i am def going to dine here when I am craving for some Indian food loving. read more

When I first moved to Northampton, I was dying for some comfort food and Indian food is always my go to comfort food. For a while I kept eating at India House, the other Indian restaurant in town. But one day I decided to try out India Palace with a friend. It's seriously delicious. But first and foremost, the service is really great. They're always efficient, super nice, and very pleasant. They're not too pushy but they're always prompt to pour water and come take your order and follow-up after you've been served. But the food is really the star at this restaurant. I think too few people are willing to give it a chance because it's not as dolled up as India House but forget about the decor! The food is what counts here. I've had many different items from the menu but my favorite is the chicken tikka masala and the samosas...oh, and the mango lassi! The portions are really generous...much more so than those at India House. Every time I've gone to eat here, I've always had leftovers to carry over into the next day. The naan is also terrific, really warm and soft and goes well with any main dish. The daals are also incredible and very flavorful. And I'm definitely a huge fan of the kheer. I usually order 2 or 3 and take them home with me or to share with friends. (They make a great late night snack!) I highly recommend this restaurant to anybody. And for those who frequently go to India House, I really encourage you to try out India Palace. In my opinion, it's the better of the two, hands down. read more

There is only one way to simply describe this place. It's not very good, but if you want Indian lunch in Northampton you're pretty much screwed unless you're going to drive to Pintu's. Otherwise, for dinner hit India House on State Street. This place slings pretty crappy food and for years I wondered why until I learned why. Please, don't waste your money... wait till dinner time and go to India House.... .it's more expensive, certainly more crowded and maybe with a little more attitude, but their food is WORLDS better! My husband and I adore this restaurant - the food is always hot, flavorful, and a complete bargain. Chicken, beef, and lamb entrees (to name a few) will run you around $8-9 and are served with fluffy rice, as well as a starter of fritters or mulligatawny soup (I highly recommend the latter - SO delicious!) Order a side of naan and it'll come to $10, and will completely stuff you. My husband and I always split a couple of entrees, trying different things each time. It is more than enough food for 2 people, but we love it so much we tend to scarf it all up on the spot. You won't need dinner after eating lunch here! Lastly, the service is WONDERFUL. They are so polite. It could use a little renovating, but that is a small con against a mountain of pros. We come here nearly every time we're in Northampton (a few times a year) and will continue to do so in the future. read more

We started with the sampler platter of appetizers, and they were all delicious. We also ordered the garlic naan along with two dishes to share - the chicken tikka masala and the channa masala curry. They were both very good and the portions were generous. As previous reviewers have mentioned, the staff is very attentive with the refilling of the water - verging on being comical. You know how they say clothes (or shoes!) run small and you should order a size up? You should size up with India Palace and go a spice level higher. I'm a total wimp when it comes to heat but I found that the mild was too mild and the medium was just right. But they might've blanded out my food because I came with white people. Ugh. White people. Ruining everything. India Palace is sometimes eeriely quiet. A few times I've been the only person in there. And it's sometimes a little embarrassing taking friends because the whole restaurant can hear your conversation. The service is great, probably because the place is so quiet? The food comes out pretty quick. My bill came on a post-it, and I thought that was cute. It has the advantage of being open for lunch when India House is closed, and being a little cheaper, and never having to wait but it didn't really satisfy a craving for a thick, creamy curry. The rice was served a little cold. I had HUGE chunks of lamb in my lamb korma and would've preferred them to be more bite sized. This is probably a plus because I am always complaining about not enough meat in my stuff. I'd go again for lunch, but for dinner, I'd much rather pay the extra and go to India House. read more

Many in Northampton like to say that India House is the best Indian food in town, and often put down India Palace. While India House has a nicer location, it also has higher prices, and really is a different type of Indian food, with a different menu. India Palace is really a great meal. They have great lunch boxes during the day, and lots of great options at night, and the service is absolutely excellent, attentive, and polite The naan is great, definitely try the samosas as an appetizer. I have a new favorite Indian restaurant!!! We stopped in last night after a show at the Iron Horse. We had tried India House last time we were in town (for another show) and were disappointed. So we wanted to try another option. There are no Indian restaurants with 45 minutes of us so I get it when I can. We were very pleased with India Palace! We ordered samosa, naan, Saag Paneer ( my favorite) and chicken tikka masala (for husband). Everything was delicious!!!! Huge portions that I finished for lunch today. Wonderfully flavorful. Hands down the best Indian place in Noho, and the best around. I don't understand all the low reviews! Every year for my birthday I go to get Indian food here. The people are so incredibly nice and welcoming and are always around if you need help with anything, making sure you have enough water etc. I've never tasted anything here that I don't like, and I've been coming here for more than a few years regularly. Love. I love the Chicken Tikki Masala, the Coconut Chicken, the Fritters, the Mango Lassi, the Gulab Jamun, and I could go on. Also their Indian rice is the best I've ever had 100%. I stopped in for dinner here last Friday afternoon, by myself, and had a great meal. I ordered a glass of wine (filled to the brim), some garlic naan (very good), some samosas (excellent), and the standard Chicken Tikka Masala (also very good). When I ordered the Tikka Masala, he asked "mild, medium or hot". I took a chance and said "medium", then thought about changing my mind and saying mild...but decided to gamble. He must have seen the look on my face, because my food came out perfectly mild/medium.. so they actually read my mind. That's pretty impressive. There was more than plenty for two, so I took home the leftovers. I feel like a decent test of good restaurant food is, on the reheat, is is just as good as when I had it in the restaurant? I can tell you confidently my leftovers were excellent. I docked one star for the decor, which could use some updating, and the wine. I ordered a Chenin Blanc that ended up being rather sour and tasted old. I was the only person in the restaurant at the time, and I would have felt bad for making them open another bottle of wine just for my one glass. I decided not to bring it to their attention, though I assume had I done so, they would have replaced it no questions asked. Service was great, polite and prompt. Prices were good, my meal consisting of a glass of wine, samosas, naan and Chicken Tikka Masala came to $28 total (which is pretty decent). Definitely check this place out! I have eaten Indian food hundreds of times, and visit India on business. Meals served from Indian Palace are reheated frozen entrees they prepare once or twice a month. Food isn't fresh, isn't freshly cooked, and is way-way too greasy. Menu is entirely Northern Indian. Prices may be medium but the portions are large. I always go home with two or more servings still left of the Shahjahani Biryani. The pakoras are also good. The servers are polite and attentive to make sure you have a full water glass. The only complaints I have are the styrofoam to go boxes--Northampton is a town that strives to be less wasteful / more eco friendly on things like this, so hopefully India Palace will follow suit-- and their website's dinner menu, which boasts that India Palace is, "the area's only Indian restaurant", which is factually incorrect.
