Where do I even start? This was my eighth life-changing trip with Overseas Adventure Travel, and they absolutely knocked it out of the park again. I loved the variety of destinations - Spain, Algeria, Malta. The ship was gorgeous, the food was delicious, and the educational component? We recently completed the OAT "Mediterranean Navigation: Malta, Sicily, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco & Coastal Spain Small Ship Adventure." It was our third trip with the company, but it was our first cruise ever. As with our previous OAT trips, the tour leaders were excellent! And the touring that we did was quite good. The problem for us was the style of touring. On land based tours, we are used to having much more time (usually 2, sometimes 3 nights) in the place that we are visiting. We love to eat in the local restaurants, people watch in coffee shops and wine bars, wander the streets at leisure, and really get a feel for the locale we are exploring and the people who live there. Although the 80+ passengers aboard ship were divided into four groups and left the dock at 10 minute intervals, we usually ended up at the same destination with one or two of the other groups. So it tended to be a bit crowded. Being on the ship, we were never less that a half mile walk just to get out of the port area. Many days we had to be back on the ship before dinner time because we were leaving for the next destination. Now the ship itself (MV Corinthian) was comfortable and the crew spectacular. They were all friendly and efficient. The food was quite good (but, of course, was not being cooked in local restaurants.) So if you are of the "I only want to unpack once" variety of traveler, this type of tour may be ideal for you. For us, I think we'll stick with OAT's amazing land-based tours. read more

We just returned from our fifth OAT experience, this time The Pilgrimage into the Past, to Spain and Portugal, with a Pre-trip beginning in Carcassonne, France. While all of our trips have been led by delightful and knowledgeable leaders, our guide, João, was very, special, and we all felt particularly fortunate to have been guided through this amazing journey with him. Always prepared and well informed, he was also warm and truly caring, and went above and beyond to ensure we all came to understand and appreciate the history, culture and joy of the countries he clearly cherishes. I just returned from the two week Ecuador trip (Quito, Amazon and the Galapagos). I am so impressed with OAT and feel that any future group trips I will take, will be with them exclusively. I loved being taken care of with all the logistics, it made traveling to a foreign country so much easier. Our trip leaders, Sofy & Melina were amazing! They love their country and their knowledge and enthusiasm to share is astounding. They always had our safety and needs as top priority. And went above and beyond what I would have thought. The itinerary is well planned and exciting. We had a variety of exploring as well as education, along with some unexpected surprises. Our group got along very well (always a crap shoot) and we organically watched out for one another and became pals. The pre-trip to Cinque Terre was excellent. However, I think some aspects of the main trip could have been better. Two things that come to mind: when we arrived in Lecco, we were told that the two best things to do, in my opinion, were not possible unless we had arrived a day earlier. (The boat to Bellagio and the cable car) Instead, we hung around Lecco where there is not very much to do. We took a short boat ride (half hour) and walked around looking at the same redundant stores. Then, nothing until dinner. I consider the time we spent in Lecco wasted. Lake Como has so much potential! In Bessonone, we stayed in a hotel for THREE nights that wasn't air conditioned and didn't even have a ceiling fan. Europe was suffering through a heat wave that week, and temperatures were between 95 and 100 with high humidity. My sunscreen face stick, deodorant stick and a candy bar all melted from just being in the room. I was sweating from every pore and slept a total of five hours in three nights because it was so uncomfortable. I didn't want to go back to the room at all, so I walked around aimlessly until midnight. In the evening until 11pm, if I opened my window, I heard conversations from all the people who were sitting outside at the hotel restaurant. The tables and chairs were right below my window. I think that OAT should have a Plan B for those weeks with unbearable temperatures and not make us suffer. These were the most salient worst moments of the trip, but there were others. read more

This was, without question, the best trip I've ever taken--and I've traveled extensively over the years. My journey through Southeast Asia with OAT (Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam) went far beyond what I expected. It wasn't just about seeing famous landmarks--though visiting places like Angkor Wat was incredible--it was about truly experiencing the life, culture, and history of the people. What made this trip so special was how immersive it was. We didn't just pass through as tourists--we connected. From riding motorcycles through bustling streets on a food tour, to exploring the Mekong Delta by boat, to visiting local families in their homes, every moment felt authentic and meaningful. I came away with a much deeper understanding and appreciation of the people of Southeast Asia--their warmth, resilience, and way of life. I'll admit, before the trip I had some concerns--about the food, the weather, and the long distance--but those worries quickly disappeared. Everything was handled beautifully, and I felt comfortable and engaged the entire time. This trip was truly unforgettable. I would do it again in a heartbeat and highly recommend OAT to anyone looking for a travel experience that goes beyond sightseeing and into real cultural connection. read more

A lot is packed into 15 days of travel through Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana. It's both a cultural and safari experience. The accommodations were comfortable, the chef cooked meals were superb and the staff are just wonderful and knowledgeable. We just returned from our first OAT trip to Peru-Nazca lines and Amazon Rainforest. What a wonderful experience. It ran like clockwork thanks to our trip leader Jose. The amount of logistics was handled seamlessly. 5 different flights, multiple buses and several different types of boats. 5 different hotels/lodges. No way I could plan a trip like this. Our leader kept saying we're travelers not tourists. And we lived by that. Lots of learning and discovery, talked with locals on the street and in their homes. Learned so much more than just a typical vacation. Groups are typically 16 but we had 10. Was a great group to travel with. An extra special bonus is that Jose put together 3 videos of pics and videos of our trip. That is a priceless momento. We're looking forward to our next excursion with OAT. read more

My friends and I had a great time with our tour guide Guilio. Beside being energetic, enthusiastic, and funny, he was knowledgeable. He was always making sure of our safety and informing us of the places we visited. One of our friends needed to be treated for her knee pain, he arranged transportation and explained her condition to the nurses at the hospital so we didn't have to. We appreciated his thoughtfulness and sincerity. The tour itself might be better if we could stay one more night in Trento, such a nice place and only 2 nights there. Dinner options could have been better with more options or just let us be on our own. Overall we enjoyed the tour and most transportations and accommodations were good value. Thank you. read more

Machu Pichu and the Sacred Valley: Our guide was knowledgable, friendly, funny, easy to understand. food was very good, especially the guinea pig! There were a few stops where we would have liked to spend more time, but most of the time the time allotted was fine. Hotels were good. My first OAT tour, but it won't be my last, i hope. read more

Buyer beware! Working with OAT offices has been a nightmare. They are full of misinformation and don't take ownership. Timely communication is not their best forte. You end up getting overcharged and there is no accountability. The local guides being great may be the only saving grace. Stay is good, food is ok, and don't count on WiFi. Have never had any issues with other tour operators. Would definitely NOT recommend them even if I am paid to do so. read more

I recently returned from Tanzania with my first Overseas Adventure Travel trip. The guide - Godlove Mbise, and drivers Thomas and Jamal were great! They were with us the whole trip, they guided us, pointed out different animals (e.g. Lions, cheetas, leopards, etc.) and what they sounded like. The tree full of lions was priceless! We also experienced the local culture - a ceramic center where they make filters for water; an albino center; a Maasai village; we were invited to a family home, and more. This was a bucket list trip and OAT made it wonderful! I look forward to my next OAT tour. read more

My virgin trip with OAT was the Brazil, Chile, Patagonia excursion. Skillfully run by our overall leader, Marta as well as the numerous local guides we were a well-informed, on time-crew. We did have some long bus rides (unavoidable to get to some places, but gave us some much needed downtime on luxury buses albeit no Internet). Lodgings, activities, etc all on par. If one is more or less active then the excursion, one can ask the guide for alternatives that one can do solo. I was well-pleased to experience a part of the world I hadn't explored much. So much more European than I expected. read more

Oh my goodness - can't believe how excellent this trip was! I started with pre-trip in Rwanda, and it was amazing! It was so educational to learn about Rwanda's political environment and the problems between the Hutus and the Tutsis starting in 1959. I was amazed that it started so much earlier than I knew about, thinking 1994. The most amazing experiences for me were being up close and personal with a family of 17 gorillas (Diane Fossey's #4 group) and visiting a vast number (probably about 100) golden monkeys. The Mtn Gorilla View Lodge was amazing, and local dancers were excellent. Being so close to the gorillas is definitely one of my top 10 experiences ever. The main trip was also excellent - Kenya and Tanzania and viewing cheetahs, leopards, rhinos, so many hippos and lions, countless various gazelles and antelopes, many beautiful birds. We also were able to visit many villages (Masai and others), visit various tribes (tasting freshly roasted Karibou, YUM), and visit and play futbol in Kenya at the Lemong'o/Olmoti/Amboseli school visit. The teachers and students were amazingly intelligent and polite. I really enjoyed singing and dancing with the students and discussing our careers and seeing what they wished to do. One of our student leader, Joyce, was the star soloist for our song/dance. We also experienced impromptu roadside visits by a farmer's house, and he had a vision board (art work on his house) where he showed his vision (goats to start, then cow, then more cows and more land, bigger house, etc.). I was amazed by the positivity and ingenueity of many of the people we met. The countries we visited have also made huge strides in terms of educating all and stopping violence. This was an amazing experience. I especially enjoyed the home hosted visit with Mama Helena and the pre-visit to the market where we were challenged with buying some food for the lunch given instructions in Swahili (ours was easy - oranges) and smelling and identifying spices with our reward being to taste banana wine. The Baltic Sea cruise was very beautiful and educational. There are so many things to learn from seeing the places where there was such tragedy but the renewal of countries and spirit are obviously prevalent today. Most of these countries are almost pristine, The people take care of their countries with a pride that would be beneficial for the world to see and learn. Clio is a great ship and well run by very competent and caring crew. Will supply a few names who really stood out in this survey but the whole experience was wonderful. read more

I have just returned from my very first trip with Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT)- Discover Thailand: Bangkok to Chiang Rai 2025 (16 days). I had the most amazing time and incredible experiences through OAT's very well planned itinerary. Everyday of our trip went smoothly, with just the right pace that allowed us time to experience Thailand's beauty, history, culture, and all the delicious food she has to offer. My excellent experience with OAT began with the booking that was done over the phone with OAT representative by my travel companion. Booking process from the time I gave my credit card information to confirmation was lightening speed and there was no error with the spelling of my name. After receiving the final document, I called customer service because I had a concern with the luggage restriction. The representative was professional, helpful, and spoke with a friendly tone that really made me feel at ease with my questions. A few days prior to our departure, we received an email from our trip leader, Kitty, providing information relating to airport, hotel, and detailed instruction to fill out DTAC form . Kitty also arranged a time to call us individually to answer any questions we may have. During the trip, Kitty lead us through many destinations and activities and some hidden gems flawlessly. Kitty's knowledge, passion, experience, and professionalism are what truly made our trip extraordinary. As part of the itinerary, we visited a school - this is through Grand Circle Foundation - OAT's program to give back. I am grateful to learn and witness how Grand Circle Foundation positively impacts local communities with support for education, clean water, and community development . I have been an independent traveler but this very first OAT tour really exceeded my expectation. All the people on this tour are incredible nice we all got along very well. The Egypt & the Eternal Nile by Private, Classic River-Yacht adventure is a solid must-see adventure. I strongly recommend that you add the pre-trip to Jordan to see Petra and, if possible, sail from Aswan to Luxor. The history is mindblowing and the actual structures are more impressive than you can imagine from videos and photos. Aslo, O.A.T. provides opportunities to meet with local people and to get to learn much more than just a history tour. This is what sets Overseas Adventure Travel apart from other companies. I just returned from my first trip to Japan and it was amazing! Our tour leader was fantastic. I don't think my trip would have been as wonderful if we'd had a different tour leader. The country is phenomenal and I felt safe, which as a solo female traveler is very important to me. I also loved our pre-trip excursion as we get to see much more of Tokyo than on the main tour. This was my third OAT/Grand Circle trip and I really like the company. I had to change my trip from a Middle Eastern destination to Japan and there were zero hiccups when doing this. I will admit that I never use OAT's services for my flights. I take care of that myself so that I can get the flight I want. I love that OAT provides "early arrival" opportunities. I always like to fly in a day or two before the tour starts and being able to stay in the same hotel without having to change rooms is terrific. Additionally, I chose to have an OAT representative meet me at the airport and arrange for transportation to my hotel (the airport in Tokyo (Narita) is at least 90 minutes from the hotel). This was a godsend as I don't read Japanese and felt really nervous about getting to the hotel. It all worked like a charm! Note that I used this add'l service because I arranged my own flight. I believe a pickup at the airport is included if OAT arranges your flight. I've already got my next trip planned with OAT/Grand Circle! read more

I just returned from a 2-week trip through the fabled Silk Road cities of Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva, and Tashkent. Our guide was terrific! - friendly, organized, helpful, fun. OAT asked me to share my experience with YELP. The primary guide for our India trip was very difficult to understand. I have Indian friends, neighbors and colleagues- and no problem understanding them. I have traveled to over 40 countries and my expectations for this trip were modest. Two hotels were subpar, with dirty dishes at buffet and bathrooms that were moldy. 75% of travelers had significant gastrointestinal issues, requiring medical attention; one traveler was hospitalized with salmonella for 3 days after returning to the US. They claim travelers' surveys matter, however I have not any any response regarding my comments and concerns. I do, however, receive multiple requests for referrals. read more

I can't stop talking about these trips and praising OAT. I absolutely loved these adventures. The guide for my core trip to Morocco was Abdel. The OAT Egypt& Eternal Nile by Private River-Yacht trip was amazing! Five stars on everything--from hotels to food to my guide, both in the pre-trip to Jordan and for Egypt. I decided to do a Substack daily blog with photos about my adventures but the days were so filled, I am behind! I have loved Egypt since I was 8 years old, and I'm 76 now. Traveling as a single was not problem. OAT does everything for you--whisking you through airports, taking care of most tipping, and introducing you to families through the two home-hosted dinners with local families. I highly recommend this trip for everyone! The highlights for me were the Grand Egyptian Museum day, the pyramids and Sphinx, and a hot air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings. Climbing up to Khufu's burial chamber in the Great Pyramid was the ultimate bucket list experience! read more

OAT / Back Roads of Iberia was an incredible adventure, led by Noela, the most incredible trip leader. We stayed in beautiful Posadas and Paradores in Portugal and Spain. These are historic buildings, repurposed as boutique hotels, while still maintaining the character of their original use. While we moved around a lot, continuing from Lisbon to Madrid, it was so much fun to travel with our engaging group. We always had an adventure mid-way through the drive, including a cork factory, tile making, and a bull farm. In addition to the planned experiences, Noela always had additional optional adventures. I could not have asked for a better trip! read more

We had two wonderful weeks in Japan. My biggest question prior to the trip was wondering what to do with the free time that was built into the schedule. I was thrilled to find out that our guide, Hank, always had something nearby that he could not only recommend, but also lead us to, arrange tickets for, get us a meal afterwards and then efficiently back to our hotel. The choice of doing more things with the trip director, opting to rest, or to go off on our own greatly enhanced my experience. The variety of visiting 4 different cities, with side trips from most of them, made for a very full fortnight in a country where we did not feel knowledgeable enough to have appoached it ourselves. I would absolutely recommend this type of trip for a spirited introduction to unfamiliar parts of the world. read more

I didn't even know I wanted to go to Egypt -- and now I can't wait to find a way back. This trip was truly unforgettable. A huge shoutout to Mo, our tour guide (currently getting his PhD), who handled everything with total ease -- from managing luggage to making sure we were always in the right place at exactly the right time. His timing meant we experienced sites before or after the crowds, and I loved learning bits of Arabic from him along the way. The itinerary was packed but beautifully paced, including incredible moments like sharing a meal with a local family. Big thanks as well to the Nefertiti crew, especially Nasser, the bartender, who added so much warmth and personality. A once-in-a-lifetime trip -- and hopefully one I'll get to do again. read more

Just comeback from OAT Croatia and Montenegro . Our trip was fantastic and what really made it was our TEL (tour leader) Oriol. We were divided up into 2 groups on this 46 person adventure, so Oriol was with us the whole time with 21 of the guests. Croatia was beautiful even in the shoulder season and our guide were very knowledgable as was Oriol. Overseas Adventure Travel provided two back to back days @ Machu Picchu! Such a great plan! After coming so far, it is fabulous to experience Machu Picchu for more than one day! Also if the clouds had covered the mountain one day, U would have a second opportunity the next day. OAT also does a great job helping people acclimate to the altitude by housing you first in the Sacred Valley. OAT does an outstanding job connecting you with "the people" & teaching U about culture. This was the first trip with OAT for my wife and I, and it was pretty good. There were a number of interactions with local people (who, it turns out, each host hundreds of tours/year), which was the primary advantage over traveling independently. Food was a disappointment, as we'd expected a "Mediterranean Diet" with frequent seafood...instead we received fried food, pasta, and "antipasto" appetizers (generally cheese and small bites, not particularly appealing). There were some wasted days, such as a visit to a salt quarry, which missed the close-by opportunity to visit Greek/Roman temples. Overall, the tour was good but not great....somewhat of a disappointment compared with the same trip by my sisters a year previously. OAT may be trying to keep costs the same in light of last year's inflation, but if so, the trip has suffered for it. read more

I traveled to Patagonia in October 2025. 4 days before the trip I received an information e-mail that communicated we would have to handle our own luggage at some times. This was impossible for me as use a cane. Other tours inform travelers in their introduction to a tour that baggage would be handled by the traveler at times. If I had known ahead of time, I would not have signed up for the trip. I called the Oat office but they refused to help in any way. Based on optimistic note from the tour leader I decided to proceed with the tour.Once I arrived, the tour leader was not only unhelpful, he was cruel. My legs collapsed under the strain off managing my luggage and I left the tour. I had traveled on many OAT tours but had never dealt with an administrative problem. I have since learned that OAT has a reputation for being rigid and unkind if travel problems arise. read more

Pros: well organized, great TEL, good local guides, included meals with excellent food, great drivers, lots of free time, many included activities, excellent hotels CONS: 1.5 - 2 hour meals - i want to travel, not sit around eating with the group! - way too many included meals, included meals were just all together at a restaurant - we like to venture out and find small local places, prices for them to book airlines double what one can book on their own, way too much time with the entire group If you like having everything pretty much done for you at a top level and be with a group, this is an excellent company. read more
