Indiana Caverns has a large gift shop, with tons of seating as you wait for your tour to begin. It has excellent educational signage and posters, and a large fluffy orange cat named Mr Tooth. Our guide was great, very funny. I forget her name but she had dark hair in two long braids. The cavern is spectacular, the first time seeing actual live critters, in situ ice age bones, and of course the unique boat ride. 10/10 read more

It's been years...no decades...since I visited a cavern. In fact, it's safe to say that the last time I visited a cavern was probably when I was in Jr high school (that was a lot of years ago, in vague math terms). Looking for something to do on our four day Thanksgiving weekend, my wife suggested Indiana Caverns. We'd seen the signs along the highway and thought it'd be a fun little trip. Indiana Caverns is located off the beaten path along a road where you wouldn't expect to find the entrance to an underground geological attraction. Just a couple miles off the expressway, it's a scenic drive down a tree-lined road and then *BLAM*, all of a sudden, there it is. Parking is easy and the outdoor surrounding are well maintained with the visitor center on top of a hill. There's a nice view of the area from what I'm suddenly going to call Indiana Caverns Mountain. The visitor center/gift shop is sizable and has a warm, rustic charm to it. Once you pay for your tickets you can browse the gift shop and they have a lot of great merchandise. I collect shot glasses so, of course, I had to get one. They also have apparel, books, a lot of stone things, polished rocks, some kid-oriented educational toys/books, and just a great array of gifts/souvenirs/merchandise. I was impressed by the variety of selections. We waited about 30 minutes for our tour to start. You start by walking down a flight of stairs and watching a video (maybe 10 minutes long) about how the cavern was discovered and expanded, and a little history. After then it's down the tunnel to the cavern. Our tour guide was Emmy and she was excellent. Once inside the cavern it's a beautiful, mysterious experience. It's very humid and it's kind of surreal, knowing that you're underground and this exists, in all its underground glory, secluded from the world above. It is literally a trip back in time, disturbed only to make it safe for humans to take in all of its wonder and majesty. As we walked along Emmy would point out some of the features and historical facts and, yes, the bones of animals that made their way into the caverns. Also, salamanders and crawfish that live in this underground dwelling. The boat ride was a nice as we went several hundred yards farther into the cavern than we could on foot. It's eerily quiet in the caverns, aside from drops of water every now and again. Once we reached the end of the boat ride (there's more cavern past that point, this is just where the tour ends) Emmy stopped the boat. Then she asked us if we wanted her to turn the lights off. She gave us a 3-2-1 countdown and shut the lights off and it wasn't just dark, it was hella-dark. Complete, 100%, abject darkness...eerily dark...but SO freakin' cool. The end of the tour is actually the beginning of the trip back to the visitor's center, so we basically hit reverse and walked back the same path. Even on the way back Emmy stopped to point out interesting things. The entire tour lasted roughly an hour and was a great experience. All in all, our visit to Indiana Caverns was most excellent. Indiana Caverns is the place to be in Corydon. There are many caves to choose from in the area and this one is top notch. They have a large parking lot. Just off of the parking lot is a picnic shelter with a bunch of picnic tables under it. On the perimeter of the property, past the shelter you will see a pin with a bunch of little sheep that you can feed. They have an Interceptive trail outside that has placards explaining what is going on under the spot you are at in the cave below. There are a few activities to do here. In addition to the cave tour, they have the bat chaser zip line ride, gem mining, an escape room, and the Plunge, a free fall extreme ride. I visited the caverns on a weekday during the winter, so the only thing available for me to do was the cave tour and gem mining. They have an indoor and outdoor gem mining station. The outdoor one is much bigger than the indoor one. The outdoor station is a long trough and the indoor station is just a 55 gallon wooded barrel. You get a bag of gems hidden in some sand that you have to sift out. Thee are 3 types of bags to choose from that offer different types/colors of gems. It is a small bag. All the bags are small. I have mixed feeling about gem mining, but ultimately, I would probably pass on it next time. It costs way too much for what you get. Inside the building is mostly a gift shop where you can buy gems, shot glasses, magnets, toys, a play mining hard hat, drinks, paper weights, books and a whole lot more. The tour of the cave is awesome. It lasts between an hour and an hour and a half. There is a limit to the size of bag that you can carry down to the tour, so plan accordingly. The tour starts with a short video talking about the origin and history of the cave. They you have a walking portion of the cave, followed by a small boat portion. The walking portion is some work. There a lots of stairs, hills and low ceilings to navigate. You will see a few fossils during the walking portion and probably some bling shrimp. About halfway through the inbound portion of the walking leg of the tour, you will take a souvenir picture in the cave, which you can purchase at the gift shop. There was absolutely no pressure to buy. The boat portion is nice, but beware, there is a part during the boat section where they turn the lights off in the cave. They do ask, if everyone is ok with it, before they do it though. I really liked that part. It is pitch black. You can't even see your hand in front of you. Our tour guide was awesome, which reminds me, you may want to bring some cash to tip your guide if you liked them that much. She was very knowledgeable and friendly. She helped the slower members of the group catch up and did not rush us through the cave The tour ends and begins in the gift shop, where you are free to go or continue to shop on your way out. I really liked this place. It is about 2 hours from Indianapolis, but worth the drive. There is a lot to do here, especially in the summer. I highly recommend checking this place out. Such a fun, unique place to check out! You can pick and choose your attractions a la carte (cave tours, goat feeding, The Plunge, etc.) or you can purchase a bundle. Some tips: 1) Some attractions, like the Bat Chaser (zip line) and The Plunge are weight-based. Use the scale and sign the waiver BEFORE going up to pay. 2) If you do Cave Tour, pack a long-sleeved tee. It's about 55 degrees year-round. It was about 92 degrees outside when we went, but it was 55 in the caves. 3) Ben was an awesome Cave tour guide! Answered questions, made the tour informative and fun. Request a tour with him if you can! 4) Gift shop is fun. Be sure to budget for bringing home a souvenir or two. About a 45 minute drive from Louisville east end to Corydon, and not to far off the path once you exit 64. Large parking lot for a few attractions like their bungee rope, zip line, gemstone mining and escape rooms. We paid for our cave tour at the front desk and had 20 minutes to kill in the gift shop. Before moving to the cave you'll watch a small video, about 10-15 minutes. Indiana Caverns opened in 2013 and is privately owned. The cave begins will a decline, first a ramp then a spiral staircase. Small lights and a staircase will keep visitors on a path with a tour guide in front and someone else pulling up the rear. Your tour guide will point out various formations and tell the background of the cave. The highlight of the tour is the small boat ride. The ceiling of this section gets very low and it's your opportunity to sit in complete blackness. Enjoy the rest because the trek back up the staircases will make you winded, whew! Like any tour the guide will enhance the trip. Ours was nice and she pointed out any uniqueness of the caverns but I do wish there was more storytelling along the way about the explorers or recent work happening with the cave system. One gentleman asked some good questions but she wasn't able to navigate them. We enjoyed grabbing a bunch of junk food and drinks to sit outside after our tour before walking over to the gemstone mining. I highly recommend packing your own snacks and enjoying the available tables. The tour is about 90 minutes from start to finish. Make sure little ones pit stop at the restroom beforehand. Wear tennis shoes or another sturdy walking sandal. The staircase is slippery. You can take pictures and they will take a family photo you can purchase for $10. Very nice cave, we went on a rainy day and for security and our safety we waiting way past our tour time, as the young staff checked the water levels underground. In hindsight it seems scary, we were in good hands and thoroughly enjoyed the pre movie about the relatively new cave find in southern Indiana (SoIn). The boat ride was fun, they even turned the lights off out on the boat. YES, IT IS PITCH BLACK DARKNESS! Be careful when docking, fingers should be in the boat.... but he asked us to pull together the boats, hindsight that seemed dangerous with little finger assistance. Nice gift shop, chance to pan for gems and if season was better we could have flown around like bats, how dangerous could that be? Till next speleological day. read more

Went on a cave tour, which lasted about an hour and a half. First, you watch an educational film, which has references to the bible and hints at intelligent design theory. (FYI: these caves are mostly owned by private individuals instead of park systems.) It's kinda cool how deep down you go and you get to sit in a boat and travel back and forth on a small waterway. To make it more dramatic, they will turn off lights in the underground space. Pre-historic animal bones, the "face" formation, stalactites, and blind crawfish are seen on this tour. Most are pictured in the brochure. To experience it in-person, you will have to walk down steep cement walkways, then travail wet metal grated circular stairways, a couple narrow bridges, air that gets thinner as you descend 110 feet and railings which turn your hands orange. I knew this was not a cave known for its formations, and it had only been open for about a decade, but I hoped for more. The tour guide told us tales as we went down and then had nothing to say as we went back up. As someone who enjoys local geography and had some knowledge of the Binkley system, I was bored. This needs to be expanded more to be a value to the public. read more

After reading other reviews we were concerned by overt religious references and even though cheesy in parts and poorly acted in others the religious references we found the welcome video to be charming so it either may have been toned down or not as blatant as stated in other reviews. What you will find at Indiana Caverns is a a relatively virgin cave in that unlike caves that have had human tourism for decades or even centuries, indiana caverns is fresh, the facilities well maintained and LED lighting throughout. The combination of archaeology and caving felt unique which was further heightened by the boat which was novel and exciting my family. The amount of water in the cave is astounding and the overall experience was enjoyable and my wife and I will recommend. read more

And this one is very much like squire Boone and even mamouth cave tours with the exception of the boat tour through the cave. That was absolutely a unique and cool experience. My kids left saying how cool it would be to have a school field trip here. Really cool cave. We've been to several southern Indiana caves and this is the best one yet. It's pretty new. There are actual prehistoric cave bones in the cave! One is a bison. Where else would you get to see that in southern Indiana. Part of the tour is walking and then they give you a short boat ride. It's worth the admission price. read more

Firstly, the employees here are super friendly. We had several questions before we got our tix and the young lady at the counter was very kind and patient. Unfortunately, you cannot book a tour ahead of time because they only do them as needed and as they fill up, so you need to kind of time it just right, especially if you have several people in your party. We did enjoy looking at all the fun stuff in the gift shop as we waited. The tour itself is unique since you walk and also get a boat ride. I wish the prices weren't so steep though ($25 per person). We were able to see ice age bones and a crayfish, so that was cool. After the tour, we were just hanging around outside waiting for the rest of my family to pick us up (elderly mom not able to do the tour, very steep stairs) and one of the employees again was super nice and offered to take our group pic. The cat that lives there, Mr. Sabertooth, was also cute to see! read more

The reason for this review was the response from the manager responding to our tour nightmare. My family and I booked the cave tour and were all excited to tour the cave. They put our family with a large family of about 20 that spoke over the tour guide, had crying children, had one man jostle with my older child, and overall made our tour miserable. Keep in mind that I have young kids of my own. I told this to the manager on-site and she said "sorry, there is nothing I can do about that". I said, yes, you could have allowed the family of 20 to have their own tour, her reply was "we don't have the staffing for that". Didn't offer us another tour or any solution. That's just bad business, maybe they are just in it for the money and didn't care about the experience for our family. There were literally many options that an ethical business would have offered. You can tell from my hundreds of reviews that I'm generally not a complainer. Couldn't believe the cold and uncaring response from this business and they are not deserving of your money or mine. You're taking a risk that if for some reason the tour doesn't meet your expectations there will be no resolution. read more

Although we missed out on some of the experience, my favorite part(s) of the cavern were viewing bones of extinct animals and going on the short boat ride. Indiana Caverns is a no-brainer fun activity for everyone. If you can handle walking up and down stairs, then you're good to go. What is part of a network of caves in this part of Indiana with four options including Indiana Caverns, I opted for this one upon a recommendation. This is the only one with a boat tour in an underground river. Pretty cool, right? Directions: Simply take whatever Google Maps or other GPS systems may provide. This may mean going onto two lane road through the countryside, but you'll get there. Look for the big Indiana Cavern sign and brown/yellow rocks covering large lawns. Within 45 minutes from Louisville and ample parking, I was there. The fee is relatively nominal at about $20 for a tour and takes about an hour. Our guide made jokes along the way when pointing out 10,000 year old fossils from birds, but also gave us history as why it was so cool and what they have discovered in these caves. We found life here, in the form of little transparent crustaceans and tadpoles, which was amazing considering no plants were growing. It was truly a unique environment. I wish I could have done a yoga or meditation session down here because it was peaceful and calm down here. I found mental serenity until we got stuck on the boat for half an hour, and then I just laughed. What a trip-getting stuck in a cave! I hope to do more spelunking, and kayak down rivers that they have here in the future. No, I won't look to get stuck again. Rather, I'll look to have the fun that many are having exploring nature's cave systems. read more

We embarked on the Indiana Cave Trail this past weekend. This was our least favorite one out of Bluespring, Marengo, Indiana Caverns, and Squire Boone. The cavern itself is beautiful but the tours seemed very unorganized and we unfortunately had a guide who seemed to hate his job, rush everyone the entire time, and made some rude remarks to people with children and other women. This is not a place that you want to feel rushed, it is a safety issue. There are lots of stairs that are slick, places where you have to lower your head, and overhanging rocks that you need to avoid. At the end of our tour, another group was coming in, leaving both groups to have to try and pass each other on a narrow spiral staircase. Once again, beautiful caverns but I think our experience would've been better with a different guide and better timing of your departures. I also just wanted to add that I feel like the boat ride is unnecessary and just an effort to make your tour longer and seem like you are getting a good value on your tour ticket. read more

Our family had a lot of fun here! For a cold winter's day, there is nothing better than touring a cave. And this one has a boat tour!! We have visited a lot of caves, and seen several cave rivers, but this is the first time we have been on the river! If you book on-line, you save $2.00 per adult ticket. The tour is about 1 hour & 20 minutes. Our guide, Leah, was full of cave facts and interesting trivia. We saw ice age bones and animal skulls! All kinds of geologic formations. The visitors center is new and very nice. I found the prices reasonable and bought a stone turtle for my desk and a brass & turquoise bracelet with healing magnets in it! You get to exercise and see cool stuff and buy kitschy stuff for no reason. They have more adventures and outdoor trails and a sinkhole we need to check out next time. I recommend taking the tour mid day, during the week. No crowds to deal with and it allows for a more intimate experience and photo opts. The tour guide was great! Sweet, young fellow who sounded very knowledgable. I was however, disappointed when he informed us that he and others who work there have been known to eat the cave crayfish. This particular crayfish is actually protected.... It's a privately owned cave so I imagine different rules apply and I don't think he even knew they were a protected species once I pointed it out. It's one of the more enjoyable tours and guided cave experiences in the area. Fascinating to see they are in the constant process of unearthing prehistoric bones of mammals that roamed this region 40,000 years ago. A 35ft waterfall and clear streams running through the earth as you walk 120 ft below ground. A geologic wonder for Indiana. read more

We liked this place a lot but after going to Squire Boone, we changed our minds. If you only go to Indiana Caverns, you'll be happy. But if you go to Squire Boone, you'll be disappointed in IN Caverns. The differences are big. The guides are better at SB, the formations are more extensive at SB, the overall history is dramatically better at SB, the experience of the full "campus" is much better and historic at SB and SB is a dollar cheaper! read more

The cave tour was informative and fun. Our guide was named Katie and she explained all the formations and history of the cave in a comical manner which made the tour an overall great experience. What I am not a fan of is that they have a clash of contradictory statements and references in their learning materials and posters. They have posters outside and in the gift shop about God and creation but also talk about how the earth is millions of years old which totally goes against what the Bible teaches. Rather than trying to please everyone, stick to either creation or evolution so people don't get confused. read more

Our tour guide was phenomenal (I wish I could remember her name, she noted she was a geology student at a local university). She knew her stuff and was entertaining. The cave itself is cool--you get a great boat ride and see some cool fossils. Tour prices were incredibly fair. One note--it's privately owned (as opposed to say Mammoth Cave) and as such the owners are able to cater the tour to their own beliefs. The gift shop has several biblical-themed items and the video you must watch before going on the tour has a disclaimer that "the following views are based on the belief that the book of Genesis and Science are completely compatible". We worried we were about to see a video stating the world was only 5,000 years old and that Jesus rode dinosaurs ala the Noah's Ark amusement park. Not so--the video was filled with solid information that didn't try to deny the age of the planet or the formation of caves, etc. (though it glossed over details of evolution but that is okay). read more

In short I've experienced better at both Mammoth, Marengo and others. I didn't appreciate the guide trash talking the other caves in the area. I know this attraction is a business but the commercialization was too much for my liking. On top of that our guide made a number of mistakes naming features and creatures along the way. Many people, from Indianapolis, ask me about southern Indiana tourist attractions, as I live down here. I tell them that show caves are a major thing, and if they've never been to one, Indiana Caverns is the best place to start! First of all, Indiana Caverns is conveniently located, just minutes south of I-64, Corydon hotels and restaurants: very easy to get to. Corydon is a great place to stay as a basecamp for other caves, historical sites, you name it. Secondly, the facilities above the cave are modern and super nice, including a film about how caves are formed, which is unique and a great primer before you enter the cave itself. The lights come back on, and you're led to a cool tunnel that enters the cave. The kid sense of adventure will immediately hit you! Thirdly, it has features you'll experience in the other Indiana show caves, so you'll know if show caves are a thing for you! It has a tall spiral staircase that descends into the cave, like Squire Boone Caverns, just south of there. If you're ok with that kind of climbing or height, both caves will suit you! It has a grand gallery and lit formations, and if you love them, Marengo Cave will blow you away as one of the most decorated caves you've ever seen. Some of Indiana Caverns passages are briefly low, but not claustrophobically so, and that's common for about all the Indiana show caves. And finally: the boat ride. It's simply an amazing experience, both serene and quiet, and is a great prep for the larger Bluespring Caverns Park near Bedford, which is actually the longest underground boat tour in America. To sum it up: start your cave adventures at Indiana Caverns! If you like the experience, there's Squire Boone Caverns, Marengo Cave, Bluespring Caverns, and Wyandotte Caves. All of them also offer wild caving experiences, if you don't mind getting a little muddy to see amazing rooms and formations, deeper in the caves. read more
