Store atmosphere: Good... Quiet, clean, slightly cluttered feeling, a selection of Eastern and Western classical music playing softly in the background. Tea quality (bulk leaf): Below expectations... The leaves you buy here are all well packaged in air-tight, light-proof bags. The biggest mistake Indigo makes is to have far too many teas in stock. The owner mentioned once that they have over 300 varieties. This is a problem beacuse they don't seem to have a very fast turn-around. As a result all of the teas I've gotten have been terribly stale. Not fresh at all. I'd guess the average tea they have on the shelves has been there for about 2 years. Hot tea (prepared): Below expectations.... I've tried about 10-20 different teas now on seperate occasions. To make the tea they put the leaves in a paper tea-bag, put the bag in a coffee mug, and then pour 190F water over them from a standard Bunn water heater connected to tap water. They then give you an egg timer and send you to a table. There are several major problems with this method of tea preperation. Firstly, putting the tea in a bag, while convenient for on-the-go tea making, makes for sub-par tea. Especially for a shop that specializes in making and selling tea. Within the tight confines of the paper tea-bag, the tea can't expand and steep evenly into the water. This creates a flatter, less flavourful tea. Secondly, the water temperature is problematic. They have many delicate green and white teas to try, but the high temperature of the water makes these teas very astringent and virtually undrinkable. Green and white tea, are generally best steeped in 160F-180F depending on the variety of leaf and personal preference. Steeping at too hot of a temperature releases too many tannins in the leaf, which causes bitterness. I have found that the temperature of water they use is great for most oolongs, but too hot for green and whites, and too cold for herbal "tisanes", blacks, and pu-erhs. When I eventually asked if they could use slightly cooler water for the green tea I ordered, they just glared and added some ice cubes. The result was water that was varied and at about room temperature. No dice. Finally, the nit-picking: I wish they used filtered water. Tea is 98% water. Even the best teas can't taste good with poor quality water. Now Burnsville tap water is far from the worst water, but it has a pretty high fluoride level and some traces of iron that color the tea there in a way that isn't positive. I think their teas could benifit from using higher quality water. Service: Below expectations... I've been to the store about once a week for a few months now over my lunch break. I have a tea addiction. I don't know why, but the owner and his wife have always acted pretty coldly towards me. It's strange. I think I'm a fairly good customer. I frequent the shop regularly, order lots of different things, never complain, always smile, I even leave a tip every now and then. Despite this, I always feel a chill coming from the staff. Questions about the weather and their favorite teas are answered bluntly, as if it annoyed them that I dared ask. Even when the shop is dead (which is often), I'm never greeted when I enter the shop. Maybe it's because I only order hot tea and not any of their fancier bubble teas. Maybe it's because I'm such an unusual client (male, mid 20s). Regardless, I expect more. My rating for service here is average to below average. Chain coffee shops are much friendlier. Price: reasonable... -4 ozs of loose leaf tea will run you an average of $13, about half of what a place like Teavanna charges (although much staler than Teavanna) -a mug of hot tea will cost about $2.50-3, with one free refill of hot water -bubble teas and smoothies are in the $3-4 range Overall: A very disappointing shop. I wanted to love this place, but I couldn't. You walk in to the nice ambiance and the interesting Asian theme, only to find that making you a nice cup of tea is secondary to saving a few dollars. If you work in the area and have a lunch break (they open at 9am and close at 6pm), feel free to stop in for a decent bubble tea or fruit smoothie. If you want high quality loose leaf teas, look elsewhere. read more

This place reminds me of a non-chain Teavana. Big silver canisters line the walls filled with every sort of tea imaginable. Buy loose leaf tea or any sort of tea accessory in this charming little shop. You can also get a teapot-full of your tea choice and a baked item to enjoy in store. Either sit at the European style (table and chairs) section or kick off your shoes and curl up on a pillow and bamboo mat in the Asian style seating section. Of note, this place has more Boba (Bubble) tea than anywhere else I've found. You can choose the tea base and whether you want lychee jelly, coconut jelly or tapioca pearl "bubbles." The Masala Chai tea with tapioca pearls is amazing! Get your own, I ordered one to share with my husband and I wanted to snatch it out of his hand and run....it was so good! read more

My friends and neighbors brought me here after our group lunch. They were excited to have me try thier teas. I was to purchase loose leaf chamomile and they were out. So I asked if they could pack me up some. Thier attitude was tired and I felt like a bother. I proceeded to order a Chai tea latte cold. He told me they use powdered cream. I stated I was concerned I wouldn't like this as I am accustomed to almond milk or cream. Again, total lack of enthusiasm and poor customer service. My friends ordered tea and purchased porcelain coffee cups and bags of tea...spent some good monies here. I tasted the drink and hated it. I asked if I could please exchange for another drink as I am a new customer and really disliked the powder that was in the Chai tea latte. He was very rude and said "I told you what was in it, so no!" I said I wouldn't be coming back and that he lost a future customer. He said "fine". My friends were shocked as well and so now you lost 1 new customer and 3 regular customers who won't be coming back. And to think, we drove all the way from Chaska to drink your tea :( read more

Best tea shop ever! We are so fortunate to have this in our town. I turn all my friends on to this shop. The couple who own it are lovely. The staff is super helpful and speedy. Love the atmosphere. If you love masala chai, theirs is the best I have ever had. The loose tea is quite reasonable if you shop the internet. And at this shop, I know I can trust them to sell "real" organic choices. Stumbled upon this place on Yelp when trying to figure out a nice relaxing place to catch up with a friend. Saw they had a lot of great reviews and wanted to give it a try. Ordered a drink with boba and I think they were a little confused since most people who order boba here only get it with milk tea. My drink ended up just being straight black tea with boba instead of what I had originally ordered but didn't want to make a big fuss and I actually really enjoyed it! The only really disappointing thing about this place is that they have really mediocre pastry display case. I would have expected to find either fresh baked goods, or at least some authentic asian treats but everything in there looked like it came out of a box. read more

This is a wonderful teahouse and I enjoy every visit there. The ambiance is incredibly calming, and exactly what I want when sitting down to have a cup of tea. You can choose between standard tables, or a couple of unique, authentic, low to the ground tables over tatami mats. I was originally drawn to their delicious and wide selection of bubble teas, but have recently discovered their dizzying array of looseleaf teas thanks to tea classes offered by the very knowledgeable owners. This place deserves every star, and my only wish is that they had more locations around the Twin Cities so that more people would be able to discover this gem. read more

I agree with others that the store itself is nice and cozy. But I'm giving it 1 star because my husband and I both got sick (it's probably from the cream or milk they used) right after we had our milk tea drinks with pearls. This was the first thing we had today so it couldn't have been anything else. The Asian girl that was working at the front register was pretty rude to us. No smiles.. No hi.. No thank you. This was our first time visiting and would probably never going back. No wifi - and yes the owner responded in another post that they don't want ppl come to use wifi and take up all the seating on the busy weekend... That comment was just "wow!!" for me. So you basically you chose not to offer wifi because you don't want customers.. Hmmm good business plan! Your response itself gave me a good reason why I would never go back. It could have been a great visit which could turn into repeat visits, but with my first experience with them - I'll have to stick with the big chain coffee shops and Tii Cup. I would rather drive to Burnsville to Tii Cup and get better service and feel more welcome.. Oh and not getting food poisoning! I used to go to Indigo Tea Co. very frequently when I lived in MN. In fact, I wrote both my master's thesis and dissertation while enjoying countless cups of chai, royal milks, and a variety of other teas. During this time, they did not have wifi, but I also I think it's a good thing to unplug and connect with conversation and great tea. The atmosphere was quiet and contemplative, which I appreciated. I absolutely adore this place! I don't go as often as I would like, but there was a time I was going almost every week. As soon as I walk in, I feel immediately relaxed. I don't know if it's the aroma of tea or the way it is decorated. Their bobas are by far my favorite. They make them in small batches, so they are always fresh. If they tell you they have to make fresh bobas, I recommend you wait the 20 minutes it takes for them to make it. Sometimes I pretend I don't know what I want so my friends order first, and I have a better chance at the fresher bobas. Sorry not sorry! The owners (I believe their names are Neal and Annie, but don't quote me on that) would know my order when I walked in, large chai with bobas. Which surprised me, because I didn't go nearly as often as other people I know. However, it was a great feeling that they remembered me. Occasionally, when I am out and about, I see them. They wave and say hi. Now, I haven't been there in months, so I am not a hundred percent sure if it is me or my friend that they remember. He's known as the double honey guy. read more

This place is great! It's so rare to have a Tea shop that has great products and great premises. I loved sipping my pot in the store while sitting on the pillows and the short table. It's a wonderfully relaxing and recharging space. I really hope this place puts more locations across the metro. I love how welcoming it is to set up for an entire afternoon and not feel cramped or rushed. I only had one tea. It was good. Not the best tea I've ever had but good. I have been coming to Indigo Tea since 2006, and love it just as much now as I did then. Best bubble tea I have ever tried, and the atmosphere is wonderful. Chill vibe, a great place to come and read a book or write papers. Since 2006, I lived in Duluth for 4 years, and currently live in Washington DC. Each time I come home for a visit I ensure to visit Indigo Tea, even if I am only home for 24 hours. It has always been a highlight of my trips home. I also stock up on the loose leaf teas that they sell. Their variety is great, and I have yet to be disappointed with any purchase I have made there. The owners are very nice, and very helpful. AND they have finally started accepting credit cards, which was my only real qualm with the place. Highly, highly recommend this place for anyone even slightly interested in tea. read more

My family lives 2.5 hours from here, but every time we get to the Twin Cities (maybe four-five times a year) we stop in to enjoy a wonderful tea experience and to stock up on loose tea and supplies until our next trip. I love fruit teas and green teas, and this shop has an excellent supply. There's also a range of tea pots and infusers. Most recently we purchased a wonderful 40-ounce Curve tea pot and a cordless water heater and three large bags of tea. (Why didn't we buy more? Dunno.) We'll be making another trip for holiday gifts. (Oh, by the way, try an oatmeal-fudge bar but share it with two or three people.) I have friends in the Twin Cities who visit it several times a month for the atmosphere -- quiet, gentle music, conducive to good conversations and restoration of the soul. read more

I stumbled across Indigo Tea by accident. I didn't know I had a tea shop so close to my neighborhood. I stopped in to browse the teas and was pleasantly surprised when I discovered the seating area. I like to get out and enjoy some tea and a snack while I write, but I've had a difficult time finding something quieter than the numerous coffee houses around town. I finally found my spot. The atmosphere is perfect for me. The seating area is separated from the ordering area by the shelves of tea accessories, which is perfect for helping minimize any noise from that area. I like the long padded bench seat along the wall with the pillows. It's cozy and comfortable, my laptop battery usually gives out before I want to leave. I haven't tried the "Asian" seating section because of my bad knees, but it looks enticing. I've tried numerous black teas and have never been disappointed. The Earl Grey is superb and was my "go to" choice for a while. One day I spent some time in the sample area looking for something new and discovered the Golden Monkey Black, which has become my favorite. I would recommend the Irish Breakfast for those like me that kicked the coffee habit but still like a strong flavored kick in the morning. I've also purchased the Cranberry Black as a gift for a relative and I know she was very happy with it. I've always had great and courteous service, a comfortable and clean seating area with excellent ambience, and quality tea with a great selection. We have frequented this shop several times a week for nearly two years with a mentally handicaped older man. This has been his favorite activity. He has always been quiet and happy to be there, greeting the owner with a cheery hello, which was not reciprocated. Last week we were told by the owner to not come to the shop again. Favorite tea shop I've ever been to. No Starbucks, tea garden, or caribou coffee could ever compare to the tea at indigo. I have been to cafe's and tea shops all over and no place has a better chai tea. The most popular thing there is the iced chai, the iced green tea matcha latte, and their coffee cake which is to die for. The owners are very sweet and always kind and their prices are very reasonable. Their loose leaf tea is amazing and very cheap (about $6 for a 4oz) and tastes just as amazing as teavanna which is very very expensive. This place has no wifi, only because they want the environment to be very calm and relax and zen and to keep out outside distractions. They also have many tea products and cute mugs that you can buy for very reasonable prices! I was disappointed with the service I got. the shop was pretty dead when I walked in and I had some questions about choosing a tea. I was basically told to go sniff around in the jars and figure it out. If it had been busy I would have done just that, however with literally no one waiting to be serviced and only a few customers already enjoying their tea I was put off. This place is one cool find! I came here for the first time last summer when I wanted to try bubble tea for the first time. It looks like they have lowered their prices since I have been there which is nice. It is a nice place right along the way to Shakopee. The owner is very nice and like to hit up and nice conversation. Next time I come, I'm just going to get some more ice in my bubble tea because it was a little too warm. They have a lot of options and are very homemade. Nothing seems to be straight out of a package, it all seems to be homemade. read more
