I always pass the store and never came in as I thought it was just a flower shop that sold some plants. I stopped by UPS to drop off a package and decided to go inside. I was actually looking for a watering can as Amazon was out of stock on the one I wanted for about 10 days. Well they had one for 1/2 the price and it was in stock so I grabbed it. Overall nice selection for a small store, prices were competitive and the staff was friendly. It is very small so it was difficult for everyone o be socially distant although all customers and staff had masks on. They have a good selection of indoor and outdoor plants, gardening supplies, plant food, potting soil, etc. The employees were accommodating and friendly. I would recommend stopping by as it's more convenient than Home Depot or Lowe's. The staff is much more knowledgeable than the big box stores as well. read more

I stopped by the store to see what they got. I had heard about them from a FB plant group so I said, "let's check them out!" The plants were very well taken care of. They were under grow lights and beautifully labeled. I saw some philodendron pink princesses there which is the current "it" plant. The plants not under grow lights were in the backyard, lots of tomato plants and plants that yield fruit. I ended up buying some small plastic pots (2 inches in diameter) which I haven't seen anywhere else. Their terracotta pot selection was also good considering they're a small store in Bay Ridge. I also liked their seed selection, I found some seeds for cat grass which I haven't seen in other stores. I enjoyed my visit and the staff were friendly and communicative. I'll visit again in the future! I had seen some propagation tubes with suction cups for the window in the display area. The staff that work there really care about their plants and you can tell as you purchase plants and they ask you if you know how to take care of it. If you dont, they then spend the time to explain how to take care of that specific plant, they also have a newsletter they give you, all while others are waiting in line to pay. When you first come in there are a bunch of succulents along the line, but there are seasonal things they have out. She and her staff never fail to give each plant and its owner the individualized attention they need. No matter how many times you visit I can assure you, you'll always walk out knowing something you didn't when you walked in. When you visit you're sure to catch Helena randomly quizzing her staff on plant related topics, always making sure they are as capable as she is. I called yesterday morning concerned about a plant I'd purchased last summer. It was flourishing until about two weeks ago when it began to wilt. When I spoke with Helena, she told me the store would be closing at 5. Working more than 30 minutes away I would never make it before she closed. So,I asked if she'd mind looking at a picture and offering some advice instead. Once Helena received the picture of my poor wilted plant she agreed to stay open until 5:30 to evaluate her in person! Can you imagine Home Depot or Lowe's EVER extendingto wait 30 additional minutes after closing time just to help little ole you?! Yea, me either! My mom passed away on May 1st and I was given about 9 plants from her wake. My mom loved planting and had an amazing green thumb. Me on the other hand, my thumbs are far from green. One of the best garden shop I've been too yet. I've been to more than several garden shops in Manhattan and South Brooklyn, this one is by far the cleanest and most organized. They had just about all the necessities for indoor and outdoor plants. My plant had gnats from a new bag of soil. I needed replace the soil. This shop had their own mixed potting soil. It was rich and inexpensive soil with worm castings. So far, my plant is gnat free and thriving. The owner was really helpful and knowledgeable. He was kind and offered his help. Stopped by to buy perlite because I thought that's what my monstera and pothos cutting needed to grow (I'm a new plant mom) and Helena's staff recommended I speak to her before buying anything. It went from having 3 trunks to 1 strong one and one that needed major work, there was major root damage that was caused by over watering. I love nature and enjoy plants, but never had the inclination and certainly not the knack, to garden. Then one day a Roma tomato plant from Indoor-Outdoor Gardner found its way to a container on my porch, and Helena's passion and encouragement infected my heart and cured my 'anything but green-thumbs'.... The tomatoes ripened (read: I didn't kill the plant and it actually produced fruit!!) and transformed into the most delicious sauce I'd ever made or eaten. The next season, peppers, eggplant and herbs joined the tomatoes; followed by containers replaced by raised beds; then more vegetables and flowers were added; and last season I even grew some of the plants and herbs from seed under grow lights and Helena's sage advice! It has been a joy-filled, most delicious journey. My mom and I began a Mother's Day tradition a few years ago, of giving each other the gift of beauty and sustenance - plants! She loves flowers and I love herbs and vegetables. We come to Indoor-Outdoor Gardner in early spring and have the most wonderful time each selecting what we most want to grow. Took a drive to Bayridge with this particular plant shop at the top of my list to visit because of the positive reviews. I was so excited! Unfortunately and bizarrely, it was like buying a plant in the Twilight Zone. The person in front of me and many other customers, had multiple items. The owner and the customer went over and over and over the number of items, in slow motion. They couldn't agree if there were 15 or 17 items. Then, they sent one of the employees to find other items to add...in slow motion. Helen, the owner and this customer were obviously friends or family. They could care less that people were waiting in line. Such a bummer when you take a road trip to a particular place based on internet reviews and it's such a disappointment. I've been to this little plant shop twice and let me start by saying each experience was worse than the last. The male employees there are nice but today I had the pleasure of dealing with two older women. The older blonde one was rude and condescending when talking to me. I was ignored twice before I had any acknowledgment. I asked a simple question only for her to respond with a rude, "no." Then it was time to pay, that was the fun part. I asked either lady if they can help me at the register, the blonde one says she's not doing the register but then proceeded to go to the register and open the till, which in that time, she could've rang me up already. I'm not sure if my race played a part but I will state that I also walked in around 5:30, they close at 6. Maybe they were in a rush to close but I was not a window shopper. I understood they were trying to close and tried to pick up everything as quickly as possibly. New update, after reading previous reviews, I believe my race did play a part in how I was treated. I cannot express my love for this shop enough! Helena not only is able to find the solution to any plant problem, but teaches you how to do it yourself! I came in the other day with a ZZ plant I had owned for about 2 years (bought from a big box store). It suddenly started turning yellow and looked like it was dying. Turns out that it was root rot, because I hadn't changed it from it's nursery soil which was nearly all peat moss which holds water too much for this plant. We removed it from the pot, removed the dead stalks and rotten roots, and replanted it in good draining soil and a better pot. So far it's looking much better! I drove my decades-old ficus tree, with its hairless roots and dropping leaves, to Indoor Outdoor Gardener last April. Helena agreed to take it in, and last week when I went to pick it up, I could hardly believe it was the same tree. The leaves were shiny and green and new growth was evident all over the canopy. Helena is a fairy godmother to plants and animals alike, she takes in strays, abused plants and other unfortunates, and nurtures them back to health. She also will teach you to be a better caretaker.
