Great food. Great service. Romantic spot. Cute patio. A little expensive but it's nice for a special occasion.

Resto Gare Bistro is a cool restaurant in St. Boniface, the French Quarter of Winnipeg. I remember…read moreit being called La Vieille Gare. It has since changed its name, but is owned by the same folks. It's simply spruced up inside and has a more bistro feel. This eatery is still located at an old train station, in an actual train car. The French food that I have had here is amazing. I had escargot for the first time in my life from this eatery. They were in butter and garlic, and were tender. I grossed by friend out by eating the entire appetizer. I don't get why snails gross people out. Then again, I'm Chinese and he isn't. But, wait! It gets better. I had frog legs here for the first time, too. There is nothing like butter to make food taste even better. It is true that frog legs taste like chicken. There's a naturally subtle, sweet taste to frog. The butter was delightful with it. Okay, I didn't come to this eatery to eat butter. I've had the tortière, which was so comforting and yummy. It had pork and small potatoes in it. I have also had the boeuf à la bourguignon. It was in a red wine sauce with mushrooms, onions, and whipped potatoes. So good! The beef just melted in my mouth with every bite. I have yet to have dessert here. One of these days, I will! I miss this place. I look forward to returning and checking out the menu. (145)

I ordered the beef dip medium rare and it was absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked and packed with flavor. I also had the soup of the day along with their bread and vinaigrette, which were both fantastic and a great start to the meal. Dessert was amazing as well and the perfect way to finish the evening. Overall, great food and outstanding service. I'll definitely be coming back soon!

This place is cute full of comfy unpretentious European mom and pop owned diner restaurant vibes…read more It's a small place with pretty good quality food. The first time I stopped here I tried the not that expensive Borscht Soup. It tasted more like beets the vegetables more than anything else and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It was very filling. The crab meat salad came with lots of fruit pieces on the side which was interesting. The mashed crab meat concoction in the middle was cold like potato salad or coleslaw salad and it was pretty good. I loved the small pieces of crab meat and potatoes! They were tasty. The lemon soufflé was just okay but hard to stop eating. You can't just take one spoon bite, you gotta eat all of that soft fluffy cream because it's delicious and easy to digest. My friend liked his Pecan chocolate pie and he said the chicken soup was okay but I noticed that it didn't have a whole lot of chicken pieces and noodles in it. Service was polite and happy to answer questions. I found the waitress helpful.

I found the battering of the schnitzel to be a tad too doughy for my likely, but it was easy to remove one side of batter and enjoy a slightly lighter meal. It's a cool spot and it was filled with regulars which gives it a homey vibe. They'll accommodate big groups but it's not really the spot for massive group meals. The dining room has a max cap of 48 and tables are set for 4.

Staff was very friendly and helpful, and the place was rather lively even on a Friday afternoon…read more In terms of the food we shared an order of poutine and their blackened chicken fettuccine. Poutine was decent - not the best I've had in town but not the worst. The portion was very small, and I was surprised to see it priced almost as much as an entree on the bill - they don't have it on the menu a la carte but you can upgrade a side of fries to poutine for $4. Since the pasta dish didn't normally come with fries I asked if they could just do a side of poutine and they said yes (and then charged $14 for it). It wasn't worth it. The blackened chicken fettuccine was disappointing. Our host highly recommended it, and it's a dish I generally enjoy enough I even make it at home. The blackening rub they use had almost no spice, which to me defeats part of the point of "blackened" chicken - the taste was more on the herby side. The noodles themselves were bland and the sauce was almost non-existent - sadly underseasoned. I chopped the chicken up into tiny bits and mixed it all together so that they flavors from the chicken could add at least some excitement to the pasta, but while it helped it didn't quite save the dish. Overall the experience was fairly mediocre. Maybe I should have gotten a burger, but I went with the host's recommendation instead for a dish I normally quite enjoy and came away disappointed. The price of the side of poutine is on me - I didn't ask ahead of time. But it came out to be nearly double what I'd expected for half as much as I'd thought it would be.

The staff were friendly, professional and dressed sharply. The service was outstanding. The menu had so many great options that it was a tough choice. I ordered the French Dip with Parmesan garlic fries, which others at my table loved. Another at our table really liked their blackened chicken Alfredo. I also loved my Prosecco Sangria drink. Definitely will try again if we visit downtown Winnipeg.
