    Beef empanada we shared. Delicious!

Friendly welcome by Giuli as soon as we walked in. Appreciated that she explained some of the things on the menu (like creole sarsa which is citrusy pickled onions). Ordered a strawberry slushie, beef empanada, juicy beef sandwich and the pork belly sandwich. Beef empanada didn't need powdered sugar since it was perfect as is but apparently in Perú, they put a glaze. My husband and I each tried a bite of each other's sandwiches but decided we liked better the ones that we'd chosen for ourselves. Pork belly was amazing and bread was so crusty fresh. Sweet potato fries and strawberry slushie were wonderful too. Giuli offered my husband a bowl of seafood soup that the chef was trying out and he enjoyed it - he said it was the perfect amount of spice for him. Bathroom was clean and just as we were leaving, a family of four with two little girls had just settled in. Very family-friendly, ready with IKEA high chairs. I don't know that I would be coming back that regularly since it's kind of out of the way for us, but I think this was just about as authentic a Peruvian experience as I could ask for in British Columbia!

My first experience having Peruvian food, and definitely not my last! A friend of mine invited me here for dinner and introduced me to her culture and tried out some popular Peruvian dishes: Lomo Saltado, Causa Tasting Sampler, and Fish Ceviche When I tell you I was speechless, I really was! I could not believe how different this food was from my expectations. It was sooo delicious- the combination of flavours were new to me for the causa and the saltado dish. All were so savory and making me want more! I was so full by the end of dinner but I wanted to order more lol. The ambiance is also very Cosy but elegant. They sometimes have live performances on site which from what I've seen online looked amazing! Drinks: there is a signature drink that they recommend, which consists of a juice made from the cobs of blue corn. It reminded me so much of mulled wine but without the alcohol, with a sweetness that was perfectly balanced. I highly recommend coming here and giving the food a try. It is probably best to go in a large group to be able to try other dishes. One thing to note is that the prices are a little higher than I expected, but given the quality of the food, it makes sense. But just an important FYI

The menu's fusion approach is ambitious, but in my experience it can be hit or miss depending on what you order. What I find difficult to overlook is that the restaurant is owned by Solterra, whose nearby property at 900 Hornby St is paramountly different from Ancora. 900 Hornby has become the subject of significant neighbourhood concern. Many residents, the mayor, the chief of police, business owners and representatives from the travel and tourism industries have all voiced frustration over the impact they believe Solterra's upcoming safe drug injection site will have on the surrounding area. Open drug use, public disorder, crime, and a decline in the sense of safety for those living and working nearby has increased exponentially with the SRO Murray Hotel and will only get worse with the opening of the injection site next-door. It's unfortunate to see two properties owned by the same company serving such dramatically different realities only a few blocks apart. While Ancora offers a refined waterfront experience, the situation around 900 Hornby continues to be a source of crime, violence, open drug use and general mayhem.

Everyone speaks Spanish whether you call or go in person, there is only employee names Leslie though who does speak fluent English. The store sort of reminds me of the little snack stores in all inclusive resorts, with a dessert fridge and trays of pastries. Everything made fresh and decently priced. We recently ordered the 8" tres leche cake for $65, and it is massive! I know it's soaked in three milks, but it was so heavy... it's finished with whipped cream and fruit, and you can choose either coconut or chocolate for the outside. We chose coconut for a less sweet option -!: it was delicious, super moist and tasty. It's a very rich cake though with all the whipped cream, so you can't eat too large a slice. There were plenty of leftovers, so we pre sliced them and freezer them. They defrost in the fridge overnight and taste so good again the next day. Will definitely be back for the tres leche, and ordering more pastries!
