I'm calling them for everything that I need from here on out. Skylur came recommended to me by an electrician I trust. I had just finished paying another contractor 50% of the job when he flat-out disappeared on me and left me with a half-demo'd hall and bath (yep, tale as old as time). Skylur was extremely sympathetic to my situation and came over immediately! He looked at the current gutted bathroom and provided a quote within a couple of days. The quote was extremely fair for such a large amount of detailed work. His quote was less than ABC who wanted more money for far less work (ABC was just going to do patch jobs...but Skylur removed and replaced all drywall so it was perfectly seamless and brand new!) Skylur is patient, professional, and knows exactly what he's talking about and how to best solve a problem. He answers every single call or text right away. The communication is outstanding; fast, clear and always "yes, can do!" which is huge for me. He doesn't push back or say "well...that'll cost more." He just happily gets it done for the price he quoted and sticks by his word. For this project, I needed pocket door installation, major drywall repair, new baseboards, new trim, prime/painting, vanity installation, electric work. It was a very detailed and technical job (and I am admittedly pretty OCD when it comes to my house projects). Skylur made some smart suggestions that would not only get the job done, but look 1000% times better--aka: brand new. Our old hallway and bathroom were dark, crusty (bad caulk jobs over the years) with layers and layers of terrible texture and paint. Look at the photos and you'll see what a difference Sky-Lan made. Our new hallway and bath are bright, clean and about as perfect as I could ask for. Our kids finally have a bathroom that's bright and fun. There was a team of two who worked every day from 8:30am until past 6pm until the job was done. They protected the floor, covered all the walls and worked quickly and quietly. Every evening, Skylur would personally come over to inspect the work and make a plan for the next day. If I had any questions or concerns, Skylur was there to address them. We would walk through the progress for the day and I could just point to things I was thinking about. His answer to every question was "Yep, we can do that" or "Yes, we'll get that taken care of." Every night, the team swept, cleaned up all tools and materials, and removed the old plastic from the walls. Then the next day, they set up new plastic and got right to work, minimizing dust. Drywall/demo can be messy, but they were the neatest, most respectful crew I've seen yet. I even had a few huge ceiling cracks with some water damage in a nearby living room. While they had the materials, Skylur's team fixed those cracks and painted the repaired part of the ceiling and wall at no extra charge. And not once did Skylur say that something would cost extra to do it right. He just did it the right way to begin with. There was never any nickel and diming. Even after I paid in full, Skylur came back over to touch up a few things and install the pocketdoor hardware that I ordered. He also helped plumb the sink for the new vanity when I couldn't quite get it myself. Learn from me: don't hire the "guy with a truck" to save some money (that guy will take the money and run). And don't hire the big ABC guys off the internet who just want to charge the most money for the least work. Hire Sky-Lan for the personal service and attention to every detail on your job. His crew is talented and put a lot of time and effort into the job. The craftsmanship is top-notch. And as we all know, no job is perfect. So if there's something you see that you want done just a little differently, his team will do it with no questions asked. Skylur does not charge you until you say the job is done. No other contractor does that. He's truly one of the greats, and I'm glad I found him. Just wish I knew about him 15 years ago! Skylur and Sky-Lan are my new go-to contractors. After touring my home and discussing the project I had in mind he had a detailed multi-page proposal for me. The first bed I received from a contractor was literally an email that went something like, Kitchen: 15k, Bathroom: 10k, Garage: 15k...Not very assuring. Shawn and his team were assuring from the get go. Communication with everyone on the team from his right-hand man, Oscar, and design wiz, Sara, to the plumber and electrician were streamlined by use of an app called Slack they use. This was so useful when you are working on a mult-month job and always have a ton of little questions or concerns. I could easily just shoot it out into the app and anyone on his team could respond. I loved that. And these guys are top-notch. Oscar did some amazing things in here. When we found an unexpected load-bearing beam, he expertly engineered a huge beam across the near-length of the kitchen that allowed us to fully open up the area...without hiring an engineer (my decision). That thing was solid. Then he took my dated fireplace and lathered it in multiple layers of concrete and mortar to make what is now a piece of modern art. Sara and Shawn both have an eye for design. When I sent a photo of one of my bathrooms to a friend she told me it looked with the W. In a few areas of the house they kind of nudged me to let them have some artistic leave and I am so glad they did. My master bath is now a study in what you should do for any small bathroom space and my laundry room has added about 100+ square feet to the home and functions as a mud room. All of the contractors he works with are exceptional as well. I will always use David O from Make it Drain plumbing and Irvin with Retiz Electric. I worked with Shawn on the design and he was always openminded about what I wanted to do and willing to provide suggestions or recommendations. His team of subcontractors did quality work and were respectful of me and my home. I had lots of people in and out of my house and had full trust in them. Most importantly, Shawn is an excellent communicator. He is always a text or phone call away, and would make time in his busy schedule to drop by the house and meet with me as needed. I have heard horror stories from my friends of contractors who disappear in the middle of a project or fail to respond to requests for updates or questions. I had none of these problems with Shawn. My renovation turned into a much bigger project in terms of the amount of changes that were made, but it never felt hopeless or endless, and the end result made it all worth it. They damaged our beautiful new hardwood flooring by…read moreputting burn marks all over it from welding, damaged our new stairs as well with countless burns scattered throughout. So many things were done without thought, see list below. 1. Countless black burn marks all over our light colored real hard wood flooring and stairs from welding, not properly covering the area. 2. Delays with shipment then began installing the wrong railing. 3. Completely sloppy work, paint bleeds all over floors from baseboard painting, had to point this and many other imperfections out. 4. Sealed in giant ugly putty splotches all over the stairs and had to re-sand and start stain over delaying the job even further. 5. No quality control throughout project. 6. Terrible communication, I never knew when or if someone was showing up. 7. Top wood on railing was never properly sanded even after I pointed out the jagged edges. Too lightly sealed and very rough in some areas, smooth in others. 8. Left a huge trash bag overflowing and piles of material in front of our house for weeks. 9. Daily dust all over furniture and fabric couch, again did bother not cover or seal off area until towards the end I asked them to please cover the couch. After such negligence, I no longer trusted them to "fix" my burned flooring (not flooring they installed) and asked for reimbursement to hire someone else to repair. The manager refused saying that's not how they do business. Tell me this, is all that is listed above how you do business? Maybe you should have made an exception considering how poorly my home was managed and also damaged. Of course I do not trust you or your crew to camouflage your damage no matter how "simple" you say it is. SEE PICS for yourself of things I had to tell them to fix as well as the burn marks that are currently there.

Matterhorn came recommended from my wife's boss, and that put them over the edge as far as hiring them. They demoed our old kitchen, removed soffits and outfitted the kitchen for new cabinets. They demoed our old tile floor and installed the new vinyl plank flooring. Then after our cabinets and counters were installed, they assisted us with our appliance outfitting. As with any home renovation project, there are snags and problems along the way, and they worked through them with ease. I've heard so many horror stories of people having nightmare experiences with contractors during home renovation projects, but I can safely say you won't with Matterhorn. The quaint white building on 6th street, showcasing yearly "Austin Best Builder" signs with owner and employees who wear black tee shirts that say "Humility & Curiosity & Diligence & Confidence" is simply not at all what we experienced. We recently settled a six-figure lawsuit against Melde Construction, (new owner) Bernie Calcote, its former COO Nic Bell, its former Project Manager Jesse Marsh and several subcontractors. Mr. Calcote and Mr. Bell were never deposed under oath after much legal maneuvering and boxes of evidence and hours of witness testimony are not easily accessed publicly. Therefore, we feel an obligation to warn other potential clients about key facts before possibly hiring Melde construction or any of the people involved. Melde: 1) did not keep the project notebook required by the contract that would facilitate us to see invoices for labor & materials 2) used incorrect building materials 3) did not follow architectural plans 4) charged us for work they never ultimately performed 5) made errors that could have caused catastrophic fire and/or carbon monoxide poisoning 6) repeatedly lied by omission about water intrusions in the house while family lived elsewhere If this was simply a situation of a construction project that took too long and went over budget, or if Melde had taken responsibility, we would not be voicing our concerns publicly. Melde blamed the homeowners and refused to be accountable for its actions. Homeowners are still trying to solve Melde's errors, among the most egregious issues: -concealed water damage to original hardwood floors after failing to protect home during at least two storms (fall 2022) -installed incorrect furnace in attic that would have caused fire if activated -charged for an electrical service upgrade that did not occur -installed brick type we did not order, had workman chisel to look weathered instead of ordering weathered brick -placed new HVAC condensers without discussing placement -painted over damage to the ceiling in the garage (garage was not within project scope) -installed doors & handles on the addition that don't match existing doors & handles which are directly adjacent to addition -charged DOUBLE original quote for metal handrails then did not paint with direct to metal acrylic enamel -did not honor warranty for windows, left project with multiple hardware, latches and weather strips missing Before entering into contract with Melde Construction (Bernie Calcote bought business from Leon Melde in July 2016), feel free to contact us for more explanation and details.
