Jake and Bobbie are meticulous, with great attention to detail and precision. They communicate better than any contractor you'll ever work with, and the quality is the best you'll find. Jake is experienced and skilled in nearly all aspects of construction work. Only thing I had to do was use a licensed electrician to reconfigure the electrical loads and install several new and dedicated circuits in the kitchen area when the area was gutted. Jake even goes an extra mile to do some things out of scope because he is that kind of guy, but if you push him out of scope, then you should reward him appropriately. He is anxious to please and works as if it is his own house. He installed an RO I had ordered in the middle of the kitchen-install and he wasn't going to charge, and he reworked some doors and did some extras here and there to give 100% quality and happiness. He's the only contractor I've ever given a bonus to at the end of the job; he was that good, 100% on time, and superb quality and a very fair price.

Communication: One of the first things you'll notice with Eli and his team is the tremendous amount of communication. He'll talk you through everything, provide recommendations as necessary, and answer any questions. On top of that, Eli sent us multiple updates every day that we were out of the house to keep us aware of what was happening. Pictures, video, text explanations, and he was always available for a call. It really put my mind at ease that the house was well taken care of in our absence. He ran the outside taps when it froze, kept the house at the temperature we requested, and cleaned up everything after. He also made us aware of little things like how the paint color we picked for baseboards didn't match the existing trim. With everything he did, made sure that we would be happy with the finished product. Quality: The workmanship is outstanding. The tile is cut and laid beautifully, with no hollow sounds when walking. My father used to lay tile back in his day, so trust me when I say it was well inspected after! Our walls have rounded corners, so it was very nice of Alter Construction to cut and round the baseboards instead of leaving them sharp. It looks very clean now. Attention to Detail: What really makes the work stand out is the team's attention to detail. They replaced a section of baseboards that wasn't in the work area to make them match because they were visible from the living room. They were kind enough to reinstall our baby gates at a higher position because the new baseboards were taller than the old ones. They even patched a hole in the carpet of one of our bedrooms with the scraps they pulled up from the living room. This wasn't something that we had asked them to do, they just took the initiative to really make everything nice for us when we came home. Despite my best efforts to make sure we were on the same page in regards to what I wanted done and making sure it was on the invoice it did not stop the invoices for extra work coming out saying it was out of scope. I agreed with the first change order regarding a bench but when more change orders and invoices started showing up with no heads up is when I started asking questions. And even when I said that I told them to give me a heads up on out of scope work, I still got new invoices for out of scope work. $1200 for extra hours for sloping the shower pan, $200 for extra trash removal, $600 for extra plumbing work. TLDR: Lowest Bid, Still great work, but expect them to nickel and dime you until it is done.

After touring my home and discussing the project I had in mind he had a detailed multi-page proposal for me. The first bed I received from a contractor was literally an email that went something like, Kitchen: 15k, Bathroom: 10k, Garage: 15k...Not very assuring. Shawn and his team were assuring from the get go. Communication with everyone on the team from his right-hand man, Oscar, and design wiz, Sara, to the plumber and electrician were streamlined by use of an app called Slack they use. This was so useful when you are working on a mult-month job and always have a ton of little questions or concerns. I could easily just shoot it out into the app and anyone on his team could respond. I loved that. And these guys are top-notch. Oscar did some amazing things in here. When we found an unexpected load-bearing beam, he expertly engineered a huge beam across the near-length of the kitchen that allowed us to fully open up the area...without hiring an engineer (my decision). That thing was solid. Then he took my dated fireplace and lathered it in multiple layers of concrete and mortar to make what is now a piece of modern art. Sara and Shawn both have an eye for design. When I sent a photo of one of my bathrooms to a friend she told me it looked with the W. In a few areas of the house they kind of nudged me to let them have some artistic leave and I am so glad they did. My master bath is now a study in what you should do for any small bathroom space and my laundry room has added about 100+ square feet to the home and functions as a mud room. All of the contractors he works with are exceptional as well. I will always use David O from Make it Drain plumbing and Irvin with Retiz Electric. Both of these guys are masters of their trades and very friendly and reliable too. Overall, I could not recommend Shawn and his team more. It was an honor to work with these guys. I worked with Shawn on the design and he was always openminded about what I wanted to do and willing to provide suggestions or recommendations. His team of subcontractors did quality work and were respectful of me and my home. I had lots of people in and out of my house and had full trust in them. Most importantly, Shawn is an excellent communicator. He is always a text or phone call away, and would make time in his busy schedule to drop by the house and meet with me as needed. I have heard horror stories from my friends of contractors who disappear in the middle of a project or fail to respond to requests for updates or questions. I had none of these problems with Shawn. My renovation turned into a much bigger project in terms of the amount of changes that were made, but it never felt hopeless or endless, and the end result made it all worth it. Talk about Blue Suede and professionally trained sales persons! I found them quite entertaining actually, but not what we were looking for. My son had recently had some remodeling done and had high praise for the company he used. I knew the work was professional and quality, so I gave Jose Santos at J & M Remodeling LLC., a call. He came out and met with my wife and I and we hit it off immediately. I have done business with quite a number of contractors in my 70 years and I was impressed with his demeanor, his friendliness and his knowledge about what we wanted done and his welcome advice along the way. Jose gave us a fair bid (far less than the TV guys), took precise measurements and drew up a plan that we all agreed to. He finished the work a week ahead of schedule and the end result was more than I expected. He was involved daily and his crew were perfectionists. In short, they did a fantastic…read morejob, were honest, upfront, left things clean, and were there from start to finish without any notable delays. I have recommended Marks Builders to many of my family and friends, and they've all had great things to say too.  Read on if you want the whole story! I had a leak in a wall between two bathrooms, above the kitchen.  Just to set the scene, my wife was pregnant and we had a baby due 3 weeks after the start of the construction.  My kitchen had a dropped ceiling and was original to the 1970s house.  Dustin worked with State Farm (my insurance carrier) to bring the adjuster's repair estimate up to a par. He and his team worked with us to order cabinets early (we were getting custom cabinets so they had a long lead time), then they gutted the kitchen and bathroom, raising the ceiling to 8' (reworking the HVAC, plumbing, and electrical lines in the process).  They pulled up all of the tile in the downstairs while we were out of the house (and in the hospital having the baby).  We asked for a few days at home without construction when we came home, to which they agreed. They worked hard to make sure that the house was ready for cabinets when they would be delivered. The cabinets were delivered without issue and installed the same week, with the trim taking longer than any other single step because they wanted it to look just right - and it paid off! The finishing touches make all the difference! The granite crew came in and did their thing. Like all of Dustin's sub-contractors, they were on time, professional, and courteous. They did their work well, quickly, and cleanly. We opted for granite counters and granite backsplashes, with different edge finishes in different places, corners, etc. to work around. They did it all well. Our kitchen looks fantastic, even a year and a half later. Through the whole 2-month process, Dustin's crew was on-site 4-6 days/week, except when we asked for the break. We made a lot of changes midway through, and Dustin didn't nickel and dime on the little things (moving an outlet, changing from a 2 gang to a 4 gang plug, etc). He was happy to work with my attention to detail (which can frustrate most people I know) and he did it with a smile - his attention to detail was similar. His crew was always fun to have around, and I never once worried about them being in the home, whether I was there or not. They worked hard to make sure we felt safe with them in the house at the start of Covid. All said, I strongly recommend Marks Builders. They're honest, smart, hard-working, and fun people who care about the work they produce and their customers' experience.
