Prairieton....small township, population maybe 1300...maybe, 12 minutes from the south side of Terre Haute. Discovered on a Facebook post indicating a "pop-up from 10am-2pm" on the Sunday we showed up, the Red Room Cakery is actually wholesale and not normally open to the public. Lots of cake displays and brag books about, cakes are clearly this guys jam, in addition to the baked goods he sells thru restaurants in a 50 miles radius of his Prairieton ovens. And by "this guy," I am referring to Chef J who is here this day with his side kick employee Olivia. And don't underestimate Olivia and her shy demeanor, as a current student of Purdue's hospitality program and an award winning cake baker from a 4-H event not so long ago, she knows her way around a baked good. I always say "behind every good man is a better woman" and that be Olivia in this case. Chef J could not be more of a sweeter teddy bear type personality if he tried. Kind of a bit unexpected considering that this spot is not normally open to the public, which really means "I have enough business and I would rather not deal with the public." But on this day and in this moment of this pop-up that I show up with my aging folks from Terre Haute, we were treated with real midwestern hospitality...the kind that I have forgotten about living on the west coast and in giant urban cities around the planet. I tend to drill down hard to get to the meat of a business or a person, so after grilling this overgrown teddy bear a bit, Chef J is explaining to me his military career (thank you for your service!) and how he got into cooking before he is inviting me around the back to see the action of the kitchen. The smell of hot sugar and yeast coming from an oven, painting a glaze of a gooey cinnamon concoction on top of the twists baked just so, the perfect amount of flaky crust and mildly doughy center to make this twist Mid-westernly delish. We are consuming one right on the spot before we depart. Some lava cakes for good measure, we walk out with some items to enjoy at home and happy to have made the acquaintance of Chef J and Olivia. And those lava cakes.... Keep in the frig vs the counter and then pop in the microwave for about 30-40 seconds....incredible! Really delicious. The actual establishment is again not normally open, so I am appreciating this unicorn moment. There is no hot coffee option, music chiming in or even many places to sit. Nothing about this spot says "hang out/linger." Rumor has it that Chef J tried pizza for awhile and it just did not catch on. What I clearly know and the greater Praireton area does not....bakers make the best pizzas because the dough is always exceptional. But anyway.... I consider the Red Room Cakery and our unique moment to visit and buy some baked goods moment a big win and really enjoyed taking the trip over from Terre Haute. Chef J is celebrating 10 years of being in business this summer. I am on the look out during all visits now moving forward when in Terre Haute to see if the baked goods served at an eatery come from the Red Room Cakery. Because there they are a little bit delicious and a little bit Midwestern, which makes the perfect baked good in my eyes.

Two scoops of ice cream with a cupcake. Another member of our party got a muffin they enjoyed, then our last memeber got a single cupcake and drink. The owner gave us a brownie on the house too. Ended up eating inside and watching a little bit of a cooking show that was on. Along with chatting with the owner. All in all if you want a great environment and treat this is the place to go. I didn't want to give my name for the order so she made the name up. She was very rude about it very unprofessional. If you don't want to give your name, you shouldn't have to give your name. Sidenote, the doughnut was very good. The maple pecan is one for breakfast in the morning. The dining room is very clean little on the small side and many dirty tables. You can tell that they are really struggling here.

My daughter and I both got the Chicken Gyro (that's not its full name, but that's what I remember). That was our plan B bc they were out of corned beef. It was awesome and so huge that we had to use a fork and knife to eat it. The Parmesan fries with curry was also very good. We got there during an off time. There were 6 ppl dining when we came in. It took probably 10-15 minutes before we got to order. We were there for 30 minutes before we got our drinks. I had to go out to the car to get the drinks we had in there bc we got thirsty. I also don't think they change table cloths between customers. Once the other people left, tables were cleared but crumbs remained. When I came back from the car, there was an insect crawling on our table. I won't say the R word, but I'm pretty sure it was a baby R. I pointed it out & worker squished it in her fingers and tried to save face by saying it was a spider (definitely wasn't a spider) or an aphid (most definitely not an aphid). I hate giving bad reviews, especially to small businesses, and they probably don't deserve the 3 stars, but the food was delicious when we finally got it ... just tried not thinking about the critter. Not having a restroom wasn't great either. We do prefer to wash our hands before we eat, as one should. We went out to our car to use our hand sanitizer. After other customers left, I also started to play my own music at the table. They obviously had kids in the back and had a children's show fairly loud, which was just kind of annoying. High top tables with sturdy high chairs (my aging parents are happy to see and sit in these). Puzzles, magazines and room to work or simply chat, as my parents and I are doing this day. Being just a coffee drinker, their coffee at 1pm this day was fresh, hot and decent (not decent like Cafe DuMond in the French Quarter of NOLA or anything, but this is Terre Haute and I find this afternoon joe offering respectable). It had lavender, bourbon, maybe vanilla, and it had lavender dust. My only critique would be maybe let the cute sharpie quotes on the lids dry before giving them to customers. My date didn't realize the sharpie was wet which resulted in it getting on his nose. I had to stare at that green mark for our 40 minute conversation before I could get the courage to tell him that he had sharpie on his nose. I got a great laugh out of it. I'm not sure that he did though.

The experience and the quality is the same regardless if you are in TH, LA or NYC. You are paying for quality, consistency, cuteness factor and variety of options. A Nothing Bundt Cake says something about the giver and the receiver. "This person deserves something elevated" and "I want to give this person something easy and also elevated." They are a bit of a WOW moment that can be so welcomed and unexpected when celebrating. I am familiar with Nothing Bundt Cakes out west. I pre-ordered three flavors of Bundtinis for my parents to try at this new Terre Haute location when I was in town in January. Red Velvet, Carrot and Chocolate Chocolate Chip. Enjoyed over several days and an absolute homer. They also sell small gift items for whatever event you might be celebrating....cake candles, napkins, greeting cards, thank you teach mugs (seasonal stuff). Kudos to the franchise owner who made the investment in Terre Haute to bring Nothing Bundt Cakes to this area. A win for sure.

There used to be several varieties, but now there are none to be found and no place for it on the shelves.. And the nonalcoholic section is all mixers some that actually contain alcohol!! And the section of nonalcoholic spirits and wines have been reduced by half! Is not being an alcoholic to woke now or what???
