I couldn't be happier with my experience at the San Francisco School of Massage (SFSM). After…read moreresearching several programs, I ultimately chose SFSM because of their flexible class schedules, reasonable tuition, and strong emphasis on practical, hands-on education that prepares you to work in a wide range of settings--from sports and spa environments to pain management clinics. Despite commuting from San Jose, the school's location near BART made it surprisingly convenient. The commute was well worth it for the quality of the program. I had the pleasure of learning from a diverse group of experienced, knowledgeable, and genuinely interesting instructors. Each brought something unique to the classroom and helped deepen my understanding of the body, massage techniques, and even myself. The administrative and clinic staff were consistently friendly, supportive, and accommodating throughout the entire journey. I also really appreciated the diversity of my classmates--we came from different age groups, ethnicities, and educational backgrounds, and the shared learning experience was truly enriching. The blend of homework (especially the anatomy coloring book!), in-class lectures, and extensive hands-on practice gave me the confidence and skills I needed to successfully launch a second career as a Certified Massage Therapist. I'm so grateful I chose SFSM--it was the perfect place to begin this new chapter. Highly recommended!

Even tho talking to charming Gary probably already may have convinced you. 100000000% yes, even if you do not end up being a therapist, the awareness of your body and of other people will change the course of your life towards happier and healthier living, you learn the tools how to be healthy and fit. Enrolling with SFSM was one of the best decisions of my life. I am truly a better person after finishing the school, I am so much healthier, my posture is better, and I gave the power of healing touch to my friends and family, the world around me is a better place. I found the instructors to be highly skilled and professional therapists themselves, the lessons were always highly interactive and I received SOOOO much useful and necessary knowledge, it's for sure a bang for the buck you pay because you will come out a therapist who is ready to go and heal people. Not a single instructor left me unsatisfied, I experienced each person to be on top of their game, each teacher had something very unique to share, so my set skills is a blend of their knowledge. The school also has been my healing sanctuary throughout the difficult times, I would come to the class and feel instantly better, more grounded and at peace. If you care about the energy realm, I also can reassure you that they teach that. I got more attuned with the energetic world and energies of around me through this program. And do not even get me started on the admins. They are pure angels, always making sure you stay on top of your responsibilities, they are basically babysitting you and holding your hand while you go through the program. SFSM I LOVE AND MISS YOU SO MUCH! THE BEST SCHOOL ON EARTH!

The positives were that the instructions were very clear, environment was lighthearted and fun, and a lot of the materials were already provided for us. We genuinely enjoyed our experience taking the beginner class and would definitely recommend this for couples as we've already used some of the techniques we've learned. Our 2 hours flew by and we left both refreshed and enlightened as massage beginners. The chosen location for this particular pop up in Palo Alto also had plenty of parking. I can't really speak to the SF pop up location and its parking situation. A couple downsides were that the space was a little chilly. I would have liked if there was some heating especially since a cooler environment typically means colder hands for massaging. Also, this is probably a tall people problem, but the mat was too short for me as a 6-footer. Overall, this class is quite generous, even offering a 10 minute late window. I do see some negative reviews posted recently, but I believe those customers were late beyond the 10 minute window. Meagan even offered this late couple to attend the later afternoon class but they chose not to take it. Meagan is quite communicative via email and she genuinely tries her best to ensure everyone has a good experience.

We also got threatening emails from them saying they would contact our workplace if we didn't take down the review. Yelp and Groupon should do something about this issue.

My massage with Robyn was incredibly disappointing--lazy technique, zero attention to detail, and…read moreto make it worse, Robyn was loudly slurping from a straw throughout the session. It happened repeatedly (at least 10 times), completely ruining any chance of relaxation. I stopped coming for a while after that, and when I finally returned, I was told I had two massages that had "expired." That alone felt questionable...but what happened next was worse. The staff told me the owner would contact me before moving forward. That never happened. Instead, they went ahead and charged me $180 without any communication or approval. This place feels disorganized at best and dishonest at worst. Poor service, poor communication, and questionable business practices. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else.

I've had multiple experiences here with…read moredifferent therapists where there's been a lot of personal oversharing while I'm literally on the table just trying to relax. I've seen six therapists total, and three of them shared some very intimate details about their personal lives during the session. A friend of mine who also comes here said she's had similar experiences. I think they should have a standard check-in at the start of each session--asking if the client prefers quiet, music, or conversation. It's an expensive place, and there should be a basic conversation about comfort level upfront. The tipping situation is also confusing. The massages already cost about 30-40% more than other places in the area because they're marketed as more of a medical-style massage--which I agree, they often are--and it feels like that should be built into the price. I've had two other massage practices in Oakland and SF email clients recently saying that, now that Certified Massage Therapists are legally recognized as healthcare providers in California, they no longer accept tips. One even said they believe a no-tipping policy helps support massage therapy being treated as part of healthcare. This place feels like the opposite. You can end up paying around $240 after tip, and sometimes the session doesn't even feel like a full 60 minutes because of delays getting started. It shouldn't feel rushed at that price point. Tipping should be initiated by the client at checkout if they choose--NOT prompted and pressured by front desk staff asking what tip you'd like to leave. THIS IS NOT AN OK PRACTICE HOW THEY DO IT. And not typical of other places throughout California. Jason, as the manager, really should take a closer look at the tipping policy and culture here even if it currently benefits him.
