James was the only inspector to fully respond to my initial inquiry. Seriously, I emailed about five inspectors asking roughly five questions and all the other guys skipped over half my questions. James was the only one to answer all my questions AND he responded the same day. 2. PRICING. On top of that, James beat out the other inspectors on cost. I was suspicious, assuming this meant some corners would be cut, but James did it all and then some! He went on the roof to perform a full inspection, got into the attic and lower crawlspace, checked all appliances and fixtures - things other inspectors were missing. 3. THOROUGHNESS. I consider myself a handy guy and have an engineering background so as a challenge to myself I swept through the house first to find problems. I needed my 80 year old basement garage floor epoxied. I had a bunch of companies provide quotes…read more Some actually provided quotes without even coming out and inspecting my garage. I didn't trust these quotes at all since I knew my old garage floor was not in great shape. Obed showed great knowledge with epoxying floors. He pointed out a bunch of cracks and pits that would need to be opened up and filled. My garage also had something strange where someone had extended the footing with additional concrete. This caused extra concrete ledges around my entire footing. Obed said he could address all of it. I also needed trim installed and he said he could do that as well. Even with the trim install, his quote came out competitive with the other quotes. Obed did an amazing job with the garage floor epoxy and the trim work. I was very impressed with the end result. I know he went above and beyond to take additional time to fix issues so that the end result would be good. For example, we agreed to have one small part of the extra concrete ground down so the floor would be flat. As they were prepping the other extra concrete for epoxy, the concrete actually started cracking and falling off. Without charging me extra, they also removed this extra concrete so the end result was an entirely flat floor without any additional concrete ledges. After grinding the floor, Obed realized that it would best to level the floor. Again, without an additional charge, he leveled the floor. He also filled in a bunch of concrete holes and voids on the concrete step by the door leading into the house. When installing the trim, they took the time to specially contour the bottom of the trim to match the many dips in my old garage floor. While leveling did help with the dips, my garage floor just had some extreme dips. In the end, I was beyond happy with the end result. I originally hired him to epoxy my floor, but he ended up fixing so many different things and made the entire garage better because of it.

His knowledge of everything about masonry was on point and generous. My quest to cap my chimneys started this past spring when an adult Swift bird got into the gas fire box because the flue had fully opened up during a recent wind storm. Fortunately the pilot light for the gas log set was not lit and we were able to let the bird into the house, capture it into a garbage bag and release it unharmed outside. A few weeks later we were startled to hear the chirping of baby swifts in the same chimney when mom or dad dove down the chimney to bring them food at the tiny nest they built just above the flue opening. We had to endure the loud chirping ~ every 7 minutes for two months as the chicks grew and finally flew away. Darrel did a great job finding the right caps of different sizes, chipping some cement away from the one chimney liner to expose enough of the liner to attach the cap and even painted the chimney crown with some grey Flex Seal I had on hand to seal it until we replace it and the other two crowns when we sell our 35 year old home in the next year or two. Darrel did not want to charge me for the extra paint step but I compensated him anyway because he is an honest, knowledgeable businessman working to build his new business. The project was to prep a fireplace for installation of wood burning insert stove and involved grinding out of external face cracked mortar between bricks causing internal fireplace leakage. Darell comped pickup and delivery of the fireplace insert and installation from the total cost of the project. As he was performing the job he recognized that the upper condition of the mortar was in a better state, and did not need repairs, so he refrained from fixing what wasn't broken and lowered the cost of the job. Later on when called about some follow up questions he was very accommodating and provided plenty of his time to consult on operation and maintenance of an insert fireplace. The SHORT: Stay away from this guy, Unprofessional, Rude, Unfinished work, Billed over twice the labor that it actually took, Poor communication. I dont see how he can sustain any kind of business with how he treated us. I feel nobody should go through this and would encourage anyone reading this to choose a different handyman/contractor. The LONG: I reached out to him for a quote to replace some exterior window trim, 30sqft of linoleum, and swap out two exhuast fan motors. Pretty simple. He provided a quote which was for 16 hours, my wife had told him to do worst case scenario and the estimate was hourly so we thought nothing of it. He shows up almost an hour after he said he would on the first day (he said 9am, got there 10am), we discuss work he'll be doing briefly, he mentioned the floor in the bathroom would take less time and save some money if it ends up him just putting it over the existing floor, great. He had left for what i assume was lunch and to pick up some supplies? 2 hours later he returned, and performed a couple more hours of work for a total of about 4 hours at our home on day one. He returns the next day, works for about an hour then goes for another "lunch"/supply run? about an hour and half later he returns, and finishes up the window trim outside which he only had to replace 3 pieces. He was onsite at our home for a total of 3 hours on day 2 and said he was finished. He was only at our house a total of 7 hours, if you include his "lunch/supply" trips that would be a total of around 10 hours, which is overly generous since its a contractors job to know what materials they need and have them when they come onsite, unforseen stuff comes up sure, but to have none of what was needed before the job? He didnt have to replace any MDF in the bathroom as he laid the flooring over the existing. Also i've never paid someone hourly to eat lunch offsite.... I was at work but my wife was home, he demanded the total that was on the estimate of $1343.52 from my wife and she was shocked and mentioned he didnt do 16 hours of work, he says some rude things and tells her there is a big disconnect if she thinks all he did was 7 hours of work.....so being home by herself and being intimidated by a man demanding to be paid before he left, she felt the best route would be pay him so he would leave our home. NOT happy with how that played out. I call him up right after my wife explains what happened, i was shocked as well since he quoted us 16 hours and we had conversations about the bathroom cutting down on labor...so it was understood we only pay for the work he does, why would we pay 16 hours of labor if he was only onsite at our home 7 hours? Also the estimate included materials he didnt need or buy (MDF subfloor). He claimed he doesnt charge hourly but per day since we are in Anacortes and he is in Coupeville, so he charges for drive time and the full day no matter what. REALLY!? This is news to me and was never mentioned NOR did his estimate reflect or state that, it clearly shows QTY. 16 for labor, why would anyone assume he charges an entire day regardless? I told him i was not happy and didnt feel we should be charged the full amount on the original ESTIMATE....After about an hour of talking in circles i was exhausted and trying to be professional and civil, he said he needed to think about it and would get back to me.... I go outside to check his "handy" work....part of the trim didnt get caulked and none of it was painted....I had left paint for him as he asked before I went back to work from lunch. I message him and send him pictures, he claimed there wasnt enough time to paint since the caulking had to dry, he acknowledged the caulking was missed and should have been done...after more back and forth and rude comments by him, i was so done with everything i told him to refund me what he thought was fair and leave it at that, i told him i feel like we got ripped off, he didnt communicate well nor did his billing reflect the actual work he did, he agreed to refund $200.....Fast forward....it took him almost a month to send the check. He included a note saying "find another handyman" and "you get what you pay for"....and on the check he wrote "unrealistic expectations" in the "For" area. WOW, what a piece of work, can you get any less professional or childish? So all in all, we paid him $1143.52 to replace 3 pieces of window trim, glue down 30sqft of linoleum, and swap out 2 exchaust fan motors, which took him 7 hours of actual labor. Not only that, but he didnt caulk the window trim on one side, and didnt paint it. So I had to do that myself.

Our original agreement was to complete a sidewalk and the patio and the retaining walls. I later added modifying my deck. I did engage my attorney yesterday to see what next steps are to get Brandon to perform. Brandon called my phone twice recently and didn't leave a message about what he was calling about. Then he scolded me about not returning his calls. I informed him if you do not leave a message. I think you butt dialed me. I'm not going to waste my time returning a call when I have no idea if you intended to call or what you were calling about. I do know that he likes to fish and hunt and will drop what he's doing to go do that. I did give him a number of opportunities to make good and not breach our contract before engaging my attorney. I did include a few photos for reference, but they're a number of other items still needing to be completed. Not happy!
